Minutemen Rally for First Win of the Season

After UMASS struggled out of the game against the South Alabama Jaguars, it looked like it was going to be another long game for Charly Molnar, Bo Vandy and their teams. The team went down 14-0 early on in the game, but new offensive coordinator Vandy was able to make adjustments that got the team back on track.

After a mistake prone first game, quarterback Mike Wegezyn managed to put together a rather solid performance, completing 14 of 27 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns. More importantly, he didn't throw any interceptions.

It was the UMASS running game that was at the heart of of the Minutemen's 31 point unanswered streak that saw them eventually win, 31-21. After Jordan Broadnax left his second straight game due to injury, backup running back Jamal Wilson came in and took over. Wilson ended up with a career high 30 carries for 176 yards and two touchdowns. His bruising running style was to tough for the Jaguars to stop.

While Phil Elmassian's defense was still porous at times, it managed to make enough stands to help UMASS to its first victory of the 2013 season. That win could be fairly important as the team's next two games come against pretty tough competition. Kansas State is next on the agenda, then Vanderbilt and then the Minutemen begin their second season in the MAC conference.
