The University of Colorado has a very long tradition of football in Boulder, Colorado. Of late the University has had more woes then positives. Since 2006 the Buffaloes are a combined 20-51 and have reached 1 Bowl Game(Independence Bowl, 2007). Colorado is in need of a turn around and a quick one at that. The Pac-12, which they joined in 2011, is a very tough conference and will make a rebuild tough for Colorado.
This in-state rivalry between the two Colorado schools continues this year as the Buffalos and the Rams meet in the Sports Authority Field at Mile High. This rivalry will continue after this year until 2020. Both teams are on the lower half of their respected conferences. Colorado leads the series 61-21-2.
A fierce rivalry game is the opener for these two Colorado based schools. The Rocky Mountain Showdown is an annual game between Colorado and Colorado State. Colorado has dominated this series and looked to continue that dominance today.
Early in this one it seemed that this game would be one-sided from start to finish with the way that the Colorado defense started this one. Very strong pressure on the Colorado State QB would cause problems all day long but CSU would hang around. A very tight field position first half ended with a 10-10 score as both teams really weren't all that aggressive with their playcalling. Minus the one big TD pass by Colorado State of course.
The Rams were only able to keep this game close up until the 4th quarter came around. After ending the 3rd quarter with a late TD run by Nwoke the Rams seemed to be confident they could take this one as they started the 4th quarter with a 3 point lead. But Colorado had other plans. Christian Powell was having a great day on the ground and that continued in the 4th as he pretty much carried the Buffaloes towards their first victory of the season. Powell would only end with 1 touchdown on the day, but he also racked up 211 yards on the ground. Vincent Hobbs(TE) was able to haul in a short yardage reception for a quick touchdown to open the 4th and the Rams just did not have an answer after that. Colorado walked away from this one with a 31-20 win. In addition to Powell's rushing, the Buffaloes' defense was outstanding racking up 7 sacks on the day. Colorado welcomes BYU to Boulder next week.
