Re: The Life and Times of Brian Abernathy: A Coaching Life (NCAA 14')

Going to replay the Memphis game later tonight. I had won 41-13 and really slammed them. Hopefully I won't turn the ball over a million times and lose myself 41-13, lol

Post Game Press Conference

Big win to start the season coach. It really seemed after Joey Johnson returned the kickoff for a score that your team never looked back.

It was a big play for sure. We had just given up the fumble return to tie the game and they had some momentum, but Joey took that right away from them

The offense really seemed to click a lot better than last season. Does that have more to do with this year's squad, or Jason Habash versus Joe Gray?

They have two completely separate skill sets. Jason is a great pocket passer, but with Joe we are able to do a lot more of what we wanted to accomplish.

What are your expectations for the season after a win like this?

I think we're going to win a lot of football games. We have a talented team, and I think our defense is improved over last season.

You have a pretty light schedule too.

I wouldn't say that. There are a lot of great teams on our schedule, and we go to Boise State this year. It's not the PAC 12, but the Mountain West has some great teams.

Chris Dadson or Alvin Jelks?

Both. I like what Chris has been doing, and obviously Alvin is a Heisman winner.

Game Notes
Texas State comes in after a tough loss on the road at Auburn to open the season, while San Jose State rolled over Memphis in the Cowboy Kickoff classic. Head Coach Brian Abernathy will take on his first employer, and a lot of the kids he helped to recruit will be on the other sideline. The Bobcats have fallen off in the past three seasons, but are improved this year. They'll need to slow down Joe Gray and Chris Dadson if they'll hope to have a chance to stop the Spartans.

[b]How did it feel taking on your old program?

I had a lot of friends on that sideline, and I'm thankful for the opportunity they gave me to get my start, but it was just like any other team, and I was proud of the way we fought until the end.

This wasn't as smooth as last game, with 3 turnovers. Did a lot of that have to do with the rain, or just some bad decisions?

I think the rain had some to do with it, but there were some things I saw that we'll work on in practice. There are always things you take from a game to work on. Joe really settled down in the second half and made it happen.

Did you come close at any point in the first half to benching Joe?

That never crossed my mind. He had a poor half, but I knew if we made a few changes we'd set him up for success better in the second half, and that was what happened. He really got it together and made some big plays with his feet and his arm.

First road game next week at Iowa State. First time you'll be the underdog too. How does that make you feel?

We're going to fight. We look forward to being the under dog and going on the road. It should be a great game, they have a great team out there.

Game Notes
San Jose State plays their first major conference opponent when they travel to take on Iowa State. The Cyclones are a great defensive team, but lack the same ability on offense. It will come down to home many times Joe Gray turns the ball over. If they can contain the turnovers they should have a great chances on knocking off the Cyclones.

What is the latest word on Joe Gray? Is it as bad as it looked?

Unfortunately it is. Joe broke his collarbone and will probably miss the rest of the year. It's really tough when someone works that hard and has it taken away from him like that.

So the whole season relies on Logan Bell now?

Logan has worked hard since he enrolled. He doesn't have the experience of Joe, but he has a lot of talent and we'll work the offense around what he's comfortable with and go from there.

It seemed like he was pretty comfortable by the way he performed today.

We prep our kids to be ready, and he was ready to go. He came in and made the big plays we needed. It was as simple as that.

When your defense gave up some long touchdowns in the first quarter, what did you do to limit that moving forward. Iowa State kept scoring but they weren't scoring on three and four play drives.

They made a couple big plays, and we tackled pretty poorly early and we just told them to get back to basics. We don't want to win games like that, but we'll win however we have to.

Game Notes
With Joe Gray once again out for the season, true Freshman Logan Bell will guide the offense for the Spartans. Bell shined in relief for Gray last week in the victory against Iowa State, but the freshman will need to show some consistency if the San Jose State faithful will be able to believe in him. Temple rushes for 330 yards a game, and will need to continue that to keep the Spartans offense off the field.

Post Game Press Conference

Coach, you were stopped 3 times from the one. What would you have done differently?

We were moving the ball well on the ground. I wouldn't do anything differently. We're a running team and if a team stops us from getting 1 yard on three straight plays they deserve it.

We saw some freshman decision making issues with Logan Bell. What will you be working on with him this next week before your trip to Boise?

He's making the right decision most of the time, and that all comes with experience. He played a great game today. Hopefully we'll figure out a way to prepare him and the team to play on the clown surface they have up there.

Boise has had trouble scoring this year, are you worried about them?

They're a great program, of course we're worried about them. It's going to be a fight.
