Re: Houston Oilers: Part II
Game Recap In a game filled with more turnovers than either team can handle, San Fran was able to pull out an overtime victory over Houston in week 1. The game started out with Kaepernick driving the 49ers straight down the field for an opening drive touchdown. Houston turned the ball over immediately on 1 of what would be 6 Mike Glennon interceptions on the day. San Fran was able to capitalize, going up 14-0 quickly. After a Houston punt, San Fran put up 3 points after having a short field to work with. In the second quarter Houston finally got their first 1st down of the season, and was able to start moving the ball. Back to back touchdowns put them right back in the mix, going into halftime down 3. The 3rd quarter was quiet, and then the 4th quarter featured a back and forth battle, with Houston putting in another 2 touchdowns, while San Fran kicked 2 field goals and managed to sack Mike Glennon for a safety, making the score 28-28 to end regulation. To open overtime Houston was stopped before even reaching the 40 yard line and had to punt it away. San Francisco was able to finally move the ball on the ground, getting into field goal position for what would be the game winning kick. Houston played a lousy fundamental game by turning the ball over and committing several personal fouls, one of which gave the 49ers a 1st down in the redzone after making what should have been a 3rd down stop. The penalty led to a touchdown for San Fran. If Houston was able to cut out the turnovers, penalties, and even the safety in the 4th, they could have easily come away with a win against a far superior team, in a game in which they should not have even been in. You can tell San Francisco was rusty, because they could not capitalize on big opportunities throughout the day which kept the game closer than it should have been. Houstons defense had a short field to work with for most of the day, and they did what they could for the most part. After giving up a quick 17 points in the opening quarter, they let up nothin but 4 field goals for the remaining quarters. They kept Kaepernick in the pocket for the most part, and he had a hard time finding open recievers as the Houston defensive backfield played a solid game overall. Patrick Peterson came up with an interception in the last 1:30 to put Houston in position to tie the game at 28 overall as time expired. If not for the defense, it would have been a long day. Offensively you can see the growing pains. Mike Glennon made some pretty nice plays and was able to keep some drives going on nice throws, but he made too many errant throws that led to open receivers not being able to make a catch, or throwing interceptions. The running game had a rough time getting started all afternoon. Beanie wells and Leo Nieves could never find any holes worth running through, a credit to the stout 49ers defense. In the end though, Houston was able to throw up 28 points on what should probably the best defense they will play all season. Bruce Arians had this to say after the game, "First game of the season is no excuse. We dont practice all training camp to go out in week 1 and say 'almost.' I thought we did a lot of good things out there, but there were a also a lot of things that we need to continue to work on. The team did not give up and they were able to fight back into the game and get into overtime, so I am happy about that." Week 2 Preview Next week Houston will play their first game in brand new Oil Rig stadium. They will host the 1-0 Seattle Seahawks who are coming off of an impressive win over Pittsburg in week 1. Houston had a rough time stopping the duo of Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch last season, as well as being obliterated by Seattles top defense. If Houston can feed off of what should be an energetic atmosphere for Oiler fans who have long awaited this day, the game has the potential to be closer than the experts are predicting. Prediction: Seattle - 31 Houston - 17 |

Re: Houston Oilers: Part II
Game Recap What a game we watched here in Oil Rig Stadium's opening game. The score makes the game look a lot closer than it was in actuality. Houston came out firing on all cylinders early, they got a quick lead up on Seattle and never looked back. Russell Wilson could never jumpstart the Seattle offense, and by the time they scored their first touchdown on the day, the game had long been decided. Mike Glennon had a much better outing this week, as he kept the ball out of the opposing defenses hands all but 1 time today. Compared to last weeks 40+ passing attempts, Glennon only needed to throw the ball 28 times today due to the newfound running game the Oilers displayed today. Beanie Wells ripped off 107 yards and 2 touchdowns as he had the brunt of the carries with Leo Nieves out for 4 weeks nursing a strained groin that he got during practice this week. Michael Floyd once again put in a respectable performance playing out of the slot position, as he was Glennons favorite target for the second week in a row, and found the end zone for the first time this year. Glennons clock management, the protection that the offensive line gave him, and the running game all played outstanding today. On the defensive side of the ball, pass coverage was once again the name of the game. Houstons down lineman could never really get any great pressure on Wilson, but Wilson still had a hard time finding open receivers all day. Marshawn Lynch could not get it going today, and was shut down from the get go. The crowd was electric for Houston today and you could definately see it translate down onto the field. The sidelines were animated by the players all day, feeding off of the energy in the stadium. Towards the end of the game we saw a few scuffles break out between the two teams, as you could obviously tell the Seattle was frustrated. Houston shocked the NFL today, even shocking their own fan base. Lets hope they make a habit of this performance. HC Bruce Arians at the post game press conference: "No, no, we were not surprised at how we played today. We went into practice last week with a bitter taste in our mouths after losing in San Francisco, and we knew we needed to get to work to come out here and win one today. 0-2 is not a good start to the season, and 0-2 in the division is even worse. We came out here today, we played Oiler football the way we know how, and we were able to impose our will in all aspects of the game. Im proud of the team, coaches, and fans, but come Monday morning the high fives are over. It will be time to work agian." Game Ball: Beanie Wells Week 3 Preview St. Louis is 0-2 on the season, but dont be fooled. They played two great football teams in Dallas and the NYG. If Houston plays next week they did today, look for the Oilers to be 2-1. Prediction: Houston - 27 St. Louis - 14 |

Re: Houston Oilers: Part II
Game Recap Houston rolled into St. Louis riding a huge high after the beat down that they inflicted on Seattle last week. The excitement was short lived though, as they could not get the job done in St. Louis in week 3 action. Houston was beat in all aspects of this afternoons game, and they were only able to keep the score somewhat close after a Patrick Peterson punt return for a touchdown late in the 4th. The game was filled once again with multiple turnovers, as Mike Glennon threw for 4 interceptions and Houston lost another 2 fumbles on drives that were pushing close to St. Louis redzone. Early in the game, after Sam Bradford hooked up for a touchdown with Tavon Austin who torched Patrick Peterson on a fade route. It was the first sign of weakness all year by Peterson, but that was the story of the day. Bradford was knocked out early in the 2nd quarter and did not return, but backup Austin Davis, 2nd year man out of Southern Miss, was able to quickly fill the shoes and the Ram's offense did not miss a beat. They were able to methodically slice their way down the field on long sustained drives exploited Houston's defense for the first time all year. The only bright spot on the defense today was Mash Johnson, as he was able to record his first (2) career sacks. After the game, Bruce Arians had this to say, "We were caught with our pants down today. We came out of the gate sloppy, and the other team didn't. Its hard to beat a team in the NFL when they show up wanting to play, and you show no signs of wanting to win. Im disappointed with our performance as a team today. We will take what we learned about ourselves today and build on it." Game Ball: Patrick Peterson Week 3 Preview: San Francisco comes to town starting the season hot once again. They are off to a fast 3-0 start and dont look to be slowing down. Houston has been unpredictable in the first 3 games so far this season, but I don't think they will be able to find the same magic they found in week 1 that kept the game in San Francisco close. Prediction: San Francisco - 38 Houston - 10 |

Re: Houston Oilers: Part II
(No stats available for today's game) Game Recap Houston was able to pull to .500 today with their second win in as many tries in Oil Rig Stadium this year, against the division leading 49ers. Mike Glennon led an impressive offensive performance, finishing 21/31 for 327 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He seemed a lot more relaxed than last week, and was able to throw some pin point passes to his receivers. For the second game in a row, Rob Housler led the team in receptions with 5 catches for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns. He is quickly establishing himself as a sure handed safety blanket for Glennon, who so far has shown that he while playing shaky on the road, is very comfortable in the confines of his home stadium. San Francisco looked shaky from the start, and could never get anything going offensively. They looked confused out there when Houston's defense would give them certain disguised blitz packages, and for the second time this season the NFL's reigning AP MVP, Kaepernick, could not figure out the Houston defense. Houston was able to pull into 3rd place in the division with the win today. HC Bruce Arians had this to say, "It doesn't matter how we won, all that matters is we GOT the win. We don't want our season to teeter-totter back and forth with a win one week and a loss the next. This was a good win against an excellent team. We learned from last weeks mistakes, and we will continue to become an effective, confident football team." Game Ball: Mike Glennon Week 4 Preview Week 4 puts Houston up against the Eagles who are 1-3 this year. They've been able to put up 73 points in 4 games, but their defense has allowed 112 points on the year. Houston will be home in this one. Look for them to go 3-0 in Oil Rig Stadium. Prediction: Eagles - 17 Houston - 27 |

Re: Houston Oilers: Part II
Week 5 Houston Oiler Update
As we head into week 5, the Houston Oilers are sitting in 3rd place in the NFC West Division. Their 2 wins come against 2 of the top teams in the league, as well as top 2 in their own division. In both of these wins the team played rather brilliantly, showing signs of what could be a playoff contending team. In their two loses though, we witnessed a lot of sloppy play on the field from all 3 sides of the ball. Even with the win against San Francisco this week, there has been the start of a lot of chatter about starting QB Mike Glennon. He currently leads the league in interceptions with 13. Of course 10 of those came in the 2 loses, which are the big reasons why those 2 games turned out the way they did. His QBR so far is 70.1, and he's thrown for 1,241 yards and 8 touchdowns. Twitter accounts are buzzing about Glennon lately, calling him a temporary place holder, and saying he is not the quarterback of the future for Houston. My take in all of this, is you can go ahead and count this year as his rookie season. He got game of action last year in a week 17 matchup against a Seattle team who played their bench. This year the team added a bunch of new additions through free agency, as well as playing a high number of rookie draft picks. Beanie Wells, while rushing for two straight 100-yard games and is playing at a level we could have never asked for, is still not the permanent answer at running back. Glennon has taken charge of this team in the locker room which most fans do not get the privilege of seeing. Without him behind center, who else would we have right now? Ryan Lindley? We are 2-2 with this kid, and he has beaten 2 of the NFL's power house teams so far this year. I say give him time, let him develop and let him get comfortable with the system. We might not have the next Peyton Manning calling cadence here in Houston, but who else does? Besides Denver of course. In other team news, rookie Kicker Tanner Squierek has been released. According to team sources, punter Tomas Feliciano, who took most of the preseason kicks, will be acting as both punter and kicker for the time being. The team is not currently actively seeking another kicker to put on the roster. Injury Update: RB Leo Nieves is till nursing a pulled groin. Doctors are saying one more week of rest and Leo should be ready to go. RB Oristes Madison suffered a fractured forearm against San Francisco and looks like he will spend some extended time on the sidelines. Look for him to miss about 5 weeks. Lorenzo Alexander opted to get surgery this weekend his right achilles tear. That will kill all chances of him returning this year, as he has been placed on the IR. |
