Re: Washington Huskies (NCAA 14)

#20 Washington vs. Illinois
Soldier Field
Chicago, IL
September 14, 2013

Huskies conquer rainy Chicagoland
Fuimaono's punt block triggers a second half blowout for Washington against the Illini

CHICAGO - To be more accurate, the Washington Huskies had found their footing late in the first half against Illinois. The Huskies scored two rapid-fire touchdowns in the final moments of the second quarter, staking them to a 28-14 lead at the break.

But it was linebacker Princeton Fuimaono's explosion off the right side of the line untouched to block the Justin DuVernois punt on the opening possession of the second half that opened the floodgates. The Huskies wasted no time, going to the endzone on the ensuing play from scrimmage to go up 35-14. From there it was a beatdown, as the Huskies drove Illinois into the mud, 59-14, in front of a "neutral" crowd at rain-soaked Soldier Field in Chicago.

"We're used to the rain," Coach Brian Kudron said after the game. "You can't come play for Washington if you're not accustomed to playing in the rain. We're from Seattle, for god's sake."

There were moments in the first half when the Huskies slowed sloppiness in the conditions on both sides of the ball, but overall it was a dominant showing by the nation's 20th-ranked team. Keith Price started hot and finished hot for a monster game: 389 yards passing and three touchdowns, supplemented by 42 yards and another score on the ground. Bishop Sankey only carried the ball 17 times, but racked up 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns on those touches. Price distributed the ball beautifully to his receivers. Kasen Williams and Jaydon Mickens both went over 100 yards receiving, and Williams matched his career high with 10 catches. The 148 yards receiving was a new career best, and just the second 100-yard receiving game of his career.

"I thought we were very explosive, offensively," Kudron said. "Keith threw one interception, but that was just an absolutely tremendous play by the defender, it wasn't a bad read or even a bad throw by Keith. The one thing we still need to fix is our pass protection. We've given up seven sacks in two games, and that's not good enough. We're run blocking fine, but we can't keep exposing our quarterback to some of the hits he's taking."

On the flip side, Washington's pass rush was unstoppable all day, as the Huskies racked up 10 sacks from nine different players.

"This was an A+ effort from our pass rushers," Kudron said. "It wasn't just our linemen, either. We got three sacks from defensive backs today. Two from linebackers. I thought (defensive coordinator) Justin (Wilcox) called a great game. We showed a number of different fronts, brought blitzes from everywhere, kept them guessing, and I thought really disrupted their protection schemes. You don't want to give up 300 yards passing (323 to be exact), but I don't think we can really complain too much considering the pressure we got today."

The Huskies have what amounts to a scrimmage next week against FCS West before opening Pac-12 play. Kudron has been vocal in his opposition to playing FCS opponents, but arrived too late in the game to change the schedule.

Huskies wash out Wildcats
Offense catches fire in the rain as Washington starts Pac-12 play with a bang

SEATTLE - In the first two games of the season, against Boise State and Illinois, there was always a flashpoint where the Huskies made a big play and blew the game open. Against Boise, it was Andrew Hudson's sack-strip-recovery touchdown late in the third quarter that extended Washington's 15-13 lead to 22-13 and set the stage for the 43-13 blowout. Against the Illini, it was Princeton Fuimaono's blocked punt early in the third quarter that opened the floodgates during UW's 45-point run in their 59-14 win.

The same held true in the Pac-12 opener Saturday against Arizona. Seconds after Keith Price's touchdown pass to Austin Seferian-Jenkins put the Huskies up 21-7 with 30 seconds left in the second quarter, defensive end/tackle Evan Hudson slapped the ball out of Arizona quarterback BJ Denker's hands, forcing a critical turnover. Price connected with ASJ for a highlight-reel touchdown catch along the sideline in the endzone, putting the Huskies up 28-7 and setting the stage for a rout, as Washington rolled to a 56-21 win in rainy Seattle.

The Huskies quickly discovered how soft Arizona's defense was, particularly in the secondary, and thus chose to pass to set up the run instead of vice versa. Keith Price was dazzling, completing 28 of 38 passes for 434 yards and five touchdowns, with no turnovers. The 434 yards was the second highest of his career and 4th all-time in single-game Washington history. The main beneficiary of Price's precision was Kasen Williams, who caught a career-high 14 passes (tied for 2nd most in Washington history) for a monstrous 257 yards, which tied in the nose Dave Williams' 257 yards against UCLA in 1965. Jaydon Mickens, Kevin Smith, and ASJ all had great success as well. The passing game was so prolific, Bishop Sankey's 139-yard, 3-TD performance on the ground feels overlooked.

"We found a groove very early on today and stayed in it," Coach Brian Kudron said of his offense, which produced eight plays of 20+ yards on the day. "I said before the season that we had an embarrassment of riches at the skill positions, and it all depended on Keith Price's ability to take care of the ball and make plays. Well, four games in, he leads the country in passing yards and as 12 touchdowns to one interception. It's amazing, we put up 634 yards and 56 points, and we still had a turnover that should've been a touchdown for us (Bishop Sankey lost a fumble while diving toward the endzone early in the second quarter).

"With all that said, and with all due respect to Arizona...we understand that next week the challenge will be at a different level. Next week is the defensive standard against which our offense will be measured."

The challenge Kudron speaks of is the fearsome Stanford defense, which will host Washington in Palo Alto next Saturday. The Cardinal will be especially motivated for revenge after last year's 17-13 loss to the Huskies in Seattle.
