Re: The Coaching Career Of Mark Hudspeth

Cajuns Survive Bobcat Scare

Sometimes a girl who looks like a slut isn’t one. Louisiana-Lafayette’s game with the visiting Texas St. Bobcats was also tighter than expected. Midway through the third quarter, the Ragin’ Cajuns were down by 8 and looking like they could be headed to their first home and Sun Belt loss of the 2014 season. But ULL rallied to score the game’s final 18 points to take a 38-28 victory. The Cajuns are now a game away from an historic 10th win, which would also clinch the 2014 Sun Belt championship prior to the season finale at ULM. In the winning effort, Terrance Broadway completed 35 of 47 passes for 390 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Texas St. tailback Robert Lowe scored from 2 yards out three plays after a 27 yard completion from Tyler Jones to Devandrick Dixon converted a 4th and 3 at the ULL 3 and giving the Bobcats a 7-3 lead. The Cajuns responded with Broadway’s 9 yard TD toss to James Butler, then after a defensive stop, went up 17-7 on Broadway’s 5 yard pass to Jamal Robinson. TSU’s hurry-up offense found the end zone 30 seconds before halftime, with Lowe scoring on a 5 yard run, but Broadway’s completions of 9 yards to Alonzo Harris and 43 to Devin Scott set up a 30 yard Hunter Stove field goal for a 20-14 ULL lead at the half.

The momentum seemed to shift with a pair of Texas St. touchdowns, including Lowe’s third, giving the Bobcats a 28-20 lead at the 8:45 mark of the third quarter, but as things turned out, TSU was already done scoring. Robinson laid out a defender on the way to the end zone for a 23 yard score, and Broadway’s 2 point pass to Larry Pettis knotted things up at 28. A 13 yard touchdown pass from Broadway to Scott Austin on the final play of the third sent the Cajuns into the 4th quarter with a 35-28 lead, which was far from comfortable. TSU’s first series of the fourth quarter was a three and out, after which the Cajuns drove to a 37 yard Stover boot and a more comfortable two-score margin. After another Texas St. punt, an 11 yard Harris run reached the Bobcat 1 and TSU’s last time out was called. Because the Bobcats used that time out, ULL head coach let Harris have a crack at the end zone. A yard was lost, then the Cajuns took the more sportsmanlike route of having Broadway take a knee twice before taking a delay of game penalty with the play clock running out at 2 seconds to go, after which Broadway took a shotgun snap and danced around for a couple of beats before kneeling to seal the win.

Game Notes
Senior Day arrives with the Cajuns having the chance to win a 10th game for the first time in program history. The Red Wolves have just moved into the top spot in ESPN's "Bottom 10", while ULL is now the top vote-getting unranked team. With the 10th win, the Sun Belt title and a move into the Top 25 as motivation, the Cajuns should have no trouble achieving victory.

Re: The Coaching Career Of Mark Hudspeth

Cajuns’ Historic 10th Win Doesn't Come Easy

With the Ragin’ Cajuns trailing at halftime and quarterback Terrance Broadway out with a concussion in the first possession of the second half, Louisiana-Lafayette’s game against the visiting Arkansas St. Red Wolves did not ever resemble a matchup of a team on the verge of a Top 25 ranking versus the “top” team in ESPN’s “Bottom 10“. But with the ULL defense turning in a second half shutout and Alonzo Harris carrying the load for the offense, the Cajuns eked out a 26-14 victory to reach 10 wins for the first time in school history, clinching their second consecutive Sun Belt championship. Harris finished the day with 110 yards on 22 carries and scored all three of ULL’s touchdowns.

The Red Wolves took the opening kickoff and drove to a 2 yard touchdown run by Terrance Hollingsworth. ULL went three and out, with Broadway starting out 0-for-2 before completing an 8 yard pass to Jamal Robinson. The Cajuns had the ball back three plays after the punt, however, with Corey Trim returning an interception to the ASU 40. The turnover was converted into a 48 yard Hunter Stover field goal, then Trim made it 2 picks in as many series. Trim’s second theft was also converted into a field goal, but his day ended with a concussion sustained on the return. Following ASU’s turnover on downs at the ULL 41, Harris' 5 yard run gave the Cajuns a 13-7 lead with 6:54 remaining in the half, but the Red Wolves quickly answered with a 3 yard run by Kendrick Daniels, who sustained a game-ending strained pectoral on the score. The Cajuns then reached a 4th and inches at the Arkansas St. 5, whereupon Broadway was stuffed on a sneak for a turnover on downs. After an ASU punt, a Broadway Hail Mary was intercepted with 4 ticks left in the half.

Broadway suffered his concussion came on the play that converted a 4th and 4 at the ASU 41. Backup Brooks Haack’s 10 yard completion to Robinson converted a third down and made it first and goal inside the 1, and Harris scored on the next play. On the try for 2, Haack scrambled and was sacked, leaving the Cajuns up by less than a touchdown at 19-14. In the fourth quarter, Arkansas St. reached a 4th and 7 at the ULL 11 and elected to go for it instead of taking an easy three points. The Red Wolves got 6 yards on a catch by Dijon Paschal, with Jake Molbert making the crucial stop for the turnover on downs. Jalen Nixon came in at QB for the Cajuns, and Harris’ 10 yard run capped the ensuing clock-grinding 95 yard drive. After a four-play turnover on downs, the Cajuns were able to run out the clock.

Got Trim? ULL does, and his 2 interceptions helped the Cajuns avoid a Senior Day upset.

Alonzo Harris’ 5 yard run gave the Cajuns their first lead of the day.

Jake Molbert stops Dijon Paschal for a turnover on downs at the ULL 5.

The Cajuns sealed the win with a 95 yard drive capped by Harris’ 10 yard run.
