What a way to start the season! The Monarchs stormed into Carter-Finley Stadium looking for a fight and that is exactly what they found. Just when we thought NC State had stuck a dagger into the heart of the Monarchs, they came storming back in a flurry of bombs by T.Moss, and it was just enough to get the win.
ODU jumped on top early with a nice long opening drive capped off by a 7 yard run from Hunter. NC State answered back in the second quarter with a TD run of their own to tie it up at 7. That is when turnover bug struck the ODU offense. No matter what they tried, Moss could not keep the ball out of opposing backs hands for drive after drive. After the game was tied up at 7, NC State picked off a pass by Moss deep in ODU territory. The ODU defense responded though, with an interception of their own on the ensuing play. The following drive stalled and gave NC State a chance to go up 14 to 7, which they did. The rest of the first half was filled with stalled drives, missed opportunities and another interception by Moss. NC State held a comfortable 21 to 10 lead at the half. To start the 2nd half, NC State put up a quick 10 points to take a 31 to 10 lead and ODU looked all but doomed. They still could not get any phase of their offense up and running, and the defense was spending too much time on the field to be able to recover. Finally, ODU scored on a 1 yard run by Moss to end the quarter, cutting the lead down to 31-17. That is when the aerial assault took place. ODU dominated the 4th quarter, putting up 21 straight points to give them 28 unanswered as they stole the show and came away with the win. Moss was given protection, the receivers were getting separation, and they capped each drive off with a short TD run as they rotated running backs.
The stadium was partying pretty hard all game long until the 4th quarter rolled around, and you could feel the life being sucked out of both the home crowd and the NC State players. The onslaught of yards and points by ODU came out of seemingly nowhere, but a win is a win.
Player of the game: Todd moss
Even with his 4 early interceptions, Moss was able to stay calm down the stretch, and delivered when his team needed him most. They may have fallen into the hole that he dug, but he dug them right back out, onward to victory.
Coach Tanner had this to say about the offense, after the game:
Quote:
Their front 7 did an excellent job of getting pressure and collapsing the pocket early on, and we just could not get a handle on it. They guys did a great job of adjusting at halftime and we were able to start clicking later in the game. It was rough early, but we figured it out and it was good to get the win.
NC State drops to 0-2 on the year as ODU moves to 1-0. They have another bye next week, and will use the extra time to prepare for Eastern Michigan in week 4.
