Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally back, and on Spring Break this week. Been rather busy lately, hoping to catch up and close out 2016 this week!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eligible!

Newsome, UConn survive Cincy in shootout, improve to 6-1

Before I start, I have a backstory with this game. I played the game on Easter Sunday, but it took me 3 tries. The first time, Josh Marriner racked up 100 rushing yards in only 3 minutes. But, the game froze immediately after my second score. OK. Try #2, we get up 14-0 again, and....

Another freeze. With Cincy trolling me, we enter attempt #3. Slightly miffed, because Cincy was obviously trying to cheat me out of a win at this point, but we still go on. Into the recap.

Often in 2016 I've terribly criticized the UConn offense, blaming them for the Navy loss, and some other really crappy play in other games in the first half of the season.

While they do deserve a bit of blame in this one, we need to praise the brilliant work of Mr. 'Keel Newsome.

The pint-sized utility return man continues to be the hottest man on the UConn Huskies, adding 2 more return TD's to his 2 heroic runs last week and continuing to be the light of the Husky O.

Plus, it's safe to say that without Newsome, UConn wouldn't have won.

UConn went down 10-0 before Newsome's first return TD with 1:54 in the first quarter. With the momentum swinging toward UConn, Mike Stokes picked off Gunner Kiel's next pass (the first of the Cincy drive) and brought it back to the Cincinnati 2.

Josh Marriner deposited the rock in the end zone a play later, and capped a 14-0 run. In 14 seconds. Impressive....

Cincy shredded UConn's D most of the first half, as Kiel drove right back down the field and pushed the Bearcats into the end zone to take the lead at the start of the second, hitting Nate Cole for the 8 yard score.

Trading punches the rest of the half, UConn got a big 45 yard catch from Thomas Lucas and were able to get Ron Johnson into the end zone to make the game 21-17. Fortunately, Cincy's Andrew Meyer missed a 57 yarder at the horn, and at the half we remained 21-17 UConn.

Ah, but the magic of 'Keel did in the Bearcats once again. Newsome brought back his second kick return of the day, 4th in 2 weeks, to put the Huskies up 28-17 and suck any momentum Cincy may have had.

However, they never went away, so props to them for that.

Kiel racked up a 21 yard run and hit Lance Mosley for 17, before finding Jeremy Graves in blown coverage for a 22 yard TD score, 28-24.

Cincinnati appeared to have the upper hand after a Kevin Roberts 7 yard TD, when Mike Tyson snagged a Bryant Shirreffs pass at the Cincy 7 at the start of the 4th.

Once again, Kiel marched his troops downfield, but without tailback E.J. Junior, who went down hurt on that drive. Getting the very next carry after Junior's exit, Ira Miller bounced a carry to the left, but was met by Junior Joseph and lost the ball.

Jordan Floyd recovered for UConn, and set up a drive that lasted approximately 3 plays. Marriner ran in the 2nd of his 3 TD's on a beautiful 24 yard dash to stretch the lead to 42-31 with 5:40 remaining.

Cincy got within 3 on another Roberts TD run, but Marriner iced it with his 3rd TD of the day, and locked up a 49-46 win after a recovered onside following the last Cincy score.

Though Marriner did have 3 scores, he only amassed 80 yards, much unlike the first two tries (The Hate is Real!!). Shirreffs quietly threw an efficient 11-15 for 225 yards.

Kiel was a yard short of a 100-100 day, tossing 336 yards and running for 99 more.

With apologies owed to the offense, we now sit at 6-1 and are bowl-eligible for Bob Diaco's 3rd straight year. Still in the thick of an AAC East race, we head back to the almighty Rent next week to face Houston.

See ya there.

Thanks. Little closer than I would have liked, but I'll take it. Houston should be a good one. Still looking really forward to the UCF and USF games in just a few weeks also.[/center]

BG beat Florida? Po1soNNN will like that.

That AAC East division is looking like a power hitter. And Rice isn't having the season I expected at all. Surprising.

If he comes back around, he'll love it!

As for the AAC East, I expected us and UCF to run away, I never would have thought USF would be where they are (and will continue to be). Willie Taggart has done a great job there.

Rice had a strong start to the year obviously, but I can't believe how far you guys have fallen since losing to Army back in Week 4 or 5, whatever it was. Not sure what really happened, no big injuries, just poor play. Hopefully you can put it together and qualify for a bowl.

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

A Mid-Summers Night Dream

Summers has defensive day for the ages in UConn rally

Not sure if this came up in the thread at the end of last season, but Jhavon Williams ended up repping UConn at CB on the All-AAC team. All along, I thought Jamar Summers was the better CB last year.

I think Jamar erased any doubt about that today.

With his school record 4 INT's off John O'Korn, the junior helped shut down Houston's offense completely in the second half. This sparked a 24-0 run that propelled UConn to the 24-21 victory at the Rent, moving them to 7-1 in 2016.

Houston started red-hot though, and for a while it seemed UConn's defensive struggles from last week were crossing over.

UConn went 3 and out immediately, and Houston was on the board not even 3 plays later after a Juan Day 42 yard TD scamper.

UConn (who ended the first quarter with 11 yards of total O), went 3 and out again, and UH, aided by a roughing the passer penalty courtesy of Quintin Harrell, got a 24 yard TD pass from O'Korn to Latrell Martin to go up 14-0.

The game calmed down at the start of the second, but Bobby Puyol missed a 19 yard field goal to end the offensive woes. He missed it. You kidding me?

Fast forward now, following Bryant Shirreffs' only mistake of the game --- an INT to Howard Wilson brought back to the UConn 37 --- O'Korn scrambled 26 yards, breaking a host of tackles along the way to set up the ball at the 11 for the Cougs. Day would once again pound the rock in the end zone to make it 21-0, a precarious spot if you are UConn, considering how bad the offense has looked at times this year.

But alas, we can always count on Tony Levine -- Houston's coach -- to mess it up.

But before that, we have a UConn scoring alert to get to you.

Tommy Myers got a 14 yard catch, and Thomas Lucas made the play of the drive, leaping to catch a 46 yard pass and place UConn right at the edge of the red zone. Damon Mitchell's catch placed the Huskies in the 2, and Ron Johnson (in place of Marriner, went down hurt early, will be back for UMass next week) punched in the 1 yard TD right before the half.

So with Houston basically dominating the first half, welcome to the Jamar Summers show.

Houston got the opening possession in the second half, but Summers wasn't having any of it and picked off O'Korn's first pass. Puyol's 32 yarder was actually good this time, and UConn trimmed the lead to 11.

Take two for Houston. Thankfully, it didn't end the same. After two big gains from Martin and Demarcus Ayers, they closed in again. But, for reasons I can't explain, Levine wanted to run an option 15 yards from the end zone. O'Korn tried to pitch to Day, and it failed badly, as Javon Hadley tipped it and Cole Ormsby fell on the pitch.

Fortunately for Houston, nothing came of the next drive, and got the ball back before the end of the quarter. Unfortunately, Summers forced another INT, and ultra-utility man Arkeel Newsome, not playing special teams today, put UConn on the doormat back 4.

Summers ended another promising Houston drive in the end zone at the start of the 4th, but UConn had to end up punting with 4 minutes to go.

Houston went 3 and out, luckily, on the next drive, and Newsome got the return out to the UConn 47. Noel Thomas followed up a 5 yard Johnson carry with a 15 yard reception. 4 runs later, Newsome was in the end zone again with a UConn lead and 2:02 on the clock. WOO!

Houston, as it turns out, would have 2 more possessions in them.

After advancing to the UConn 32, Summers completed his final act with his 4th INT of the game, also in the end zone, to end the first Houston threat. The final one would be snuffed out by Jhavon Williams and locked up UConn's 7th win of the year.

Credit Jamar, credit Diaco and Anthony Poindexter for clamping down on Houston's offense and not allowing them to score after the half. However, Houston really should have had this game. I don't know why Levine stopped running Day midway through, and I don't know why O'Korn forced throws Summers' way.

But hey, works for me. UMass next in the Commonwealth. See ya there.

Hey Fry, good to see ya!

Personally, I think this is better than my last few 'chise attempts, and I'm willing to bet those who have followed my last projects will say the same. I really am interested in this concept and team, I'm almost 3 seasons in, my graphics have improved and we have a cool coaching ladder side-story going with a few of my followers (I'll keep you posted on this later in the week so you can get a coach in the dynasty for next season).

Not to mention the support I've gotten from folks like Po1soNNN, whughes and kswgrad has been immense, and I can't thank them enough for that.

With that said, hope you enjoy!
