40 -- 1-9 (0-6) 43 -- 3-7 (2-4) TOP: Tulane QB Ryan Griffin takes a shotgun snap, rolls out to the right and heaves a desperation pass to WR Devin Figaro. BOTTOM: Figaro grabs the pass out of the air and breaks two tackles on the way to a game-winning 73-yard touchdown to put Tulane ahead 43-40 with just :05 remaining to go in the game. GRIFFIN'S 73-YARD TD PASS TO FIGARO WITH :05 REMAINING GIVES TULANE AN ELECTRIC 43-40 WIN OVER RICE Teams combine for 21 points in the game's final :40 & over 1,000 yards of total offense in wild shootout | QB Griffin has career day going 29 of 42 for 504 yards and 4 touchdowns | Tulane to host UCF next week in 2010 home finale New Orleans -- The Tulane Green Wave won a topsy-turvy game, defeating the Rice Owls 43-40 Saturday in their homecoming game. Green Wave QB Ryan Griffin's thrilling 73-yard touchdown hookup with fellow sophomore WR Devin Figaro provided Tulane with the game-winning points. Both Griffin and Figaro played the game of their lives; Griffin going 29 of 42 for a career-high 504 yards and 4 touchdowns...Figaro catching 7 receptions for 203 yards and 2 touchdowns, all career highs. In a game that featured a whopping 21 points in the game's final 40 seconds and 7 lead changes overall, Tulane scored what was originally believed to be the game-winning touchdown when Griffin found CB Ryan Travis wide open for a 19-yard touchdown with 0:40 remaining. The Green Wave were low on receivers in the latter part of the game after several injuries ravaged the group throughout the contest and with senior WR Casey Robottom lost for the year two games ago due to a back injury. A former high school wide receiver, Travis filled in and made a big play. The lead was short-lived however as on Rice's very next play from scrimmage, Owls QB Nick Fanuzzi found WR Taylor Dupree for a 79-yard touchdown with 0:22 remaining. Fanuzzi finished the day with 428 passing yards and 5 touchdowns. In the end though, it was not enough as he and Dupree were merely setting the stage for Griffin and Figaro's heroics. "This was an exciting contest from start to finish and I am still trying to catch my breath," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy. "We would have liked to have seen some better defense played out there but at this stage we are what we are. This was an important victory for us as a program because it keeps us out of the cellar and being a last place team in our conference. "We're excited to get the win no matter how it comes these days but with that said, we're going to put a strong emphasis in the off-season on preventing the big plays, especially in crunch time." Tulane (3-7, 2-4) will host the UCF Golden Knights (8-2, 5-1) next week in the team's home finale. A New Wave On the Horizon | The Future of Tulane Football Can Tulane Achieve the Excellence They Have Lacked for So Long? cheese2121 | Guest Columnist from A Slice Off the Old Block After a 3-7 start, a lot of people would think that there would not be a whole lot positive to say about the 2010 Tulane football season. And, in this case, a lot of people would be wrong. When examining a team, my motto has always been start at the head and work your way down. The head in Tulane is first year coach D.Geezy. D.Geezy hasn’t had a chance to show the Tulane faithful much this year other than heartbreaking losses and a pass defense that leaves much to be desired. But heartbreaking losses are more than Tulane football is use to. As fans we are quick to forget that we use to be a team that would get blown out weekly by 30, sometimes even 40 points. We often fall into the trap of blaming the new guy for the old guy’s mistakes. Coming into the season D.Geezy was looking at a team that was nothing short of dreadful on paper, yet week in and week out, they are a team that is competitive to the very end. Need proof? Of the team’s seven losses on the season, five have been by seven points or less. No longer does Tulane face the embarrassment of playing the other team’s second stringers during the second half. All of this, we have to thank to D.Geezy. Does this mean our newfound head coach is completely blameless? Of course not. I have always gone with the four-year rule though. Four years before I start calling out a coach. I want to see what D.Geezy can do with his players in his system, which leads me into my next point. Recruiting. Tulane hosted a four star running back the other day. Even though the recruit, Harrison Williams, went on to sign with rival LSU, the mere fact that he took the visit speaks volumes of the type of attitude D.Geezy has installed around campus. It may also be noted that a program that typically brings in two and one star caliber players already has four three star caliber players committed. These players obviously have faith in D.Geezy and as long as our new coach can instill that kind of faith in the players, I owe it to him to have that same faith. One coach, I do have a problem with though, is defensive coordinator, Steve Stanard. It is flat out unacceptable to be losing games where your offensive is scoring 40+ points. The Tulane offense is ranked 21st in the league while the defense ranks 117th. Coach D.Geezy has to step in and do something. Even though, he inherited his coordinators from the previous regime, they are still a part of his staff now. It is the job of the head coach to step in where there is a problem. As much as I do not want to blame him in the first four years, he must take responsibility for his coordinators. Period. There is a lot of work to be done and the days of Tulane playing for conference championships and bowl games are still far off but they have begun to approach. Coach D.Geezy must make every offseason count. He does not have the luxury of a bad recruiting class. A great program cannot exist without great men at the top and Tulane may have found theirs. Now it is time to put the pieces in place, recruit the talent, change the schemes, and prepare for greatness. It is time to be better than we thought possible, to not settle for mediocrity, to make every down count. It is only by refusing to be average that we attain excellence. A wave is on the horizon; Tulane football is on its way to something special."

Cheese's article is definitely money. Big props to him for the write-up and I look forward to his next one. He hit the nail on every point...This team is not as bad as its record.

#25 14 -- 9-2 (6-1) N/R 13 -- 3-8 (2-5) On 3rd and Goal, UCF QB Rob Calabrese finds WR Kamar Aiken underneath and the senior fights his way into the end zone to give the Golden Knights their go-ahead touchdown which made the score 14-13 with 6:22 remaining in the game. YET ANOTHER GUT-WRENCHING DEFEAT Tulane plays one of its best defensive games of the season but in the end falls to #25 UCF 14-13 | Green Wave unable to answer the call following UCF QB Calabrese's game-winning touchdown pass | Geezy's calculated decision to not go for two earlier possibly costs team shot at an upset | Wave will travel to face Marshall next week in season finale New Orleans -- The Tulane Green Wave, like so many other times this season, came close but in the end fell just short, this time to the 25th ranked UCF Golden Knights 14-13 Saturday at the Louisiana Superdome. UCF QB Rob Calabrese's 9-yard touchdown pass to WR Kamar Aiken with 6:22 remaining in the game provided the winning points for the Golden Knights. Tulane would get the ball back one more time in the contest and drove it all the way to the UCF 40-yard line. However RB Orleans Darkwa was stuffed for a three yard loss on a 4th and 1 Wildcat sweep play, resulting in a turnover on downs with 4:03 remaining in the game. UCF (9-2, 6-1) would get the ball back and go on a clock-eating drive. With :56 remaining and Tulane out of timeouts, the Golden Knights faced a 3rd and 2. The team was able to convert however as Calabrese took an option keeper around the right corner and was tackled near the first down marker by Tulane freshman SS Cameron DeJean. The officials ruled it a first down and UCF was then able to kneel on the ball to run out the clock. "We had the order in to our defense that if they get the first down to just let them score however it was so close that I think Cam believed he had a shot to make the stop and he nearly did," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy. A questionable decision by Geezy earlier in the game perhaps cost the Green Wave a chance at sending the game into overtime. After scoring a go-ahead touchdown to take a 12-7 lead in the third quarter, Geezy made the decision to go for the extra point rather than a two-point conversion to put his squad up 14-7. "I would make that same call 100 times out of 100," said Geezy. "I do not regret it one bit. This is just our philosophy but I do not believe in going for two that early in a tight ball game such as the one today. There are many things to consider in that situation. "Should we miss it, now two field goals beats us. Should we miss it, now us kicking a field goal late in the game only makes it an 8-point game instead of putting it away with a 9-point lead. There was too much football left to be played at that juncture and to me, with the way they were playing defense, I did not like our odds of converting." The game marks a whopping sixth time this season that Tulane has lost a game in which they led in the fourth quarter. All six games were decided by a touchdown or less. "Overall this was a well-played ball game in that we had no turnovers and played pretty well defensively, however we just did not make enough big plays," said Geezy. Tulane (3-8, 2-5) will travel to face Marshall (7-4, 5-2) next week in both team's regular season finale. Note: Tulane starting WR D.J. Banks missed the game due to a brusied shoulder he sustained in last week's game against Rice. Banks, who was ruled ""questionable"" coming into the game, tried to give it a go in pregame warm-ups but was determined unable to play. The Green Wave were already without their other starting wideout, WR Casey Robottom, who was lost for the year in their game against SMU several weeks ago. Young wideouts Wilson Van Hooser (rs-fr) and Devin Figaro (so) started the game in their place. TULANE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM From: D. Geezy, Head Football Coach To: Rick Dickson, Athletic Director Re: Commitments/Upcoming Visits Date: Monday, November 15, 2010 ________________________________________________ Rick - We did not sign any players this week however I just wanted to update you on our progress. The bad news is that two of our top targets, QB Curtis Byrd and ATH/QB Derrick Mitchell soft committed this week to Colorado and Houston, respectively. The good news is that I think we still have a good shot at both of them, especially in the case of Mitchell. At this stage, he is our #1 priority because I think he could be a good, mobile quarterback for our system. I really want this player and it would also be great to steal a player from our conference rival Houston. We will stress to him that with the Cougars, his career as a quarterback would be over but here, we're going to allow him to play the position he is currently playing at his high school. Something interesting about Mitchell and Byrd is that neither of them has a single scholarship offer on the table from anyone but us, despite their "soft committments." A couple of others besides Mitchell and Byrd have given soft commits as well unfortunately - ATH Kyle Ramirez and ATH Lawrence Washington both have us second though they have soft committed to Kansas St. and Colorado, respectively. These two may be more difficult to sway than Byrd and Mitchell. The good news - No player has hard committed to any school since our last update. More good news - The other big fish we have targeted, ATH Jonathan Lacey, seems to be poised to announce he will sign with us but I suspect he is waiting for Signing Day to make things official. Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Tulane Green Wave (Part I archi
32 -- 4-8 (3-5) 31 -- 7-5 (5-3) TOP: Tulane redshirt freshman PK Ryan Rome hits a 33-yard game-winning field goal as time expires, giving the Green Wave a 32-31 victory over Marshall. BOTTOM: Wave senior CB Phillip Davis' interception, the first of his career, came with just 1:06 remaining and helped set up Rome's winning field goal. FS Shakiel Smith (#4), came through clean on a designed run blitz that ended up hurrying Marshall QB Willy Korn's throw. KICKER RYAN ROME'S GAME-WINNING FIELD GOAL AS TIME EXPIRES GIVES TULANE A 32-31 VICTORY OVER MARSHALL IN SEASON FINALE Senior CB Davis comes up with first career interception to set up game-winner in his final game as a member of the Green Wave | After team fails two-point conversion to tie the game, Geezy puts faith in his defense and it pays off | Tulane finishes 2010 season with 4-8 record, surpassing last season's win total Huntington, WV -- The Tulane Green Wave pulled off a mild upset in their 2010 season finale, defeating the Marshall Thundering Herd 32-31 Saturday on the road. Green Wave PK Ryan Rome's 33-yard field goal as time expired gave the Wave its first ever win over Marshall in school history. The kick was set up a few plays before when CB Phillip Davis, playing in his final game at Tulane, came up with the first interception of his career with just 1:06 remaining in the game. The big play set Tulane up with a first down at the Marshall 30-yard line, allowing the team to run four plays to milk the clock and set up for their winning field goal. Prior to the interception, the Green Wave had cut their deficit to two following freshman back-up RB Orleans Darkwa's 12-yard touchdown run that made the score 31-29 with 1:31 remaining. However starting RB Albert Williams , who finished with a game-high 158 rushing yards, was stuffed on a power off-tackle play on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, leaving Tulane with a deficit and leaving head coach D. Geezy with a decision...Kick the onsides kick or kick it deep and put the game in the hands of a defense that has let the team down all year long. He decided to kick it and play defense, setting up Davis' interception on 2nd and 8. "I made the decision to play the odds," said Geezy. "The chances of recovering a non-surprise onsides kick at this level are about 13%. I felt that if we really buckled down and focused on defense, we could make a play and Davis did just that. "I was very surprised that they attempted to throw there. We came out in a run-stuffing defensive look and they decided to check out of it and throw the fade on Davis' side like they did earlier in the game. This time it cost them." Tulane finishes its first season under Geezy with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-5 Conference USA record. Both totals surpass the team's 2009 marks, when they finished 3-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play. Notes: Tulane played the majority of the game without starting sophomore QB Ryan Griffin, who left the game in the first quarter with a dislocated elbow injury. Redshirt junior QB Joe Kemp finished the game for Griffin and went 13 of 26 for 188 yards while throwing one touchdown and one interception. The team was already without both of its starting wide receivers, senior Casey Robottom and sophomore D.J. Banks, who sustained injuries earlier in the season.
