Chicago, IL – Teddy Carter is sitting in his kitchen watching the morning news and notices a shocking report scrolling across the bottom of the screen… “Tennessee Titans have fired Ken Whisenhunt today as of 6:30am… No potential candidates have been released by the Tennessee Titans, but that a hire is imminent…”
“Hmm… that would be nice to be a head coach in the NFL, but Nashville and the Titans look like a job for a coaching expert like Saban, Urban, or one of those coordinators in the NFL…”
A few hours later, Teddy is sitting behind his desk looking at some scouting reports that his assistant coaches placed there the night before. “Why are we looking at this kid? It just doesn’t make sense… Ten years I’ve been here at the University of Chicago and I still can’t get scouting reports that match my player preference… Oh, what it would be like to get a job where my assistants actually knew what they were doing and weren’t just some smart Graduate Assistants.”
“Coach Carter, a Mr. Rusty Webster is on the phone… He said he is some sports team in Nashville and has some questions for you.”
“Send him to voicemail… I am already backtracked right now and need to get some stuff done today for once… … … … Wait! Minnie, who is on the phone?”
“He said his name is Rusty Webster and he said he has some questions for you about some sports position. You still want me to send him to voicemail?”
“Give me a second, please…” Rusty Webster… where have I heard that name from?... *Siri, look up Rusty Webster for me* *Siri: I don’t see Russy Weber in your contacts. Perhaps you meant one of these?...* Damn thing never works, I’ll just do it myself…
“Minnie!! Is Mr. Webster still on the phone???”
“Sorry Coach Carter, but he said he had to take another call, but said he would call back later.”
Damn… My one shot at a head coaching job in the NFL and I blew it… I gotta remember these damn GM’s names incase one comes a calling again… Yeah, right…
A few hours pass and there is no call from the Titans GM Rusty Webster, but Teddy sees another breaking news announcement scrolling across the bottom of his TV screen… “Rumors have swirled that the Titans will be signing former Alabama coach, Nick Saban, to be their new head coach… More details to come…”
I knew it… Some superstar coach is going to get that job and to think, he called me earlier and I blew a chance at even talking about getting that job. Damn…
*Ring ring ring…. Ring ring ring… Ring ring ring…*
“Yes, this is Teddy speaking… yes, sir… yes sir… really? Wow… Yes sir… okay I will keep my phone by me sir, thank you!... Minnie!!! They called me again! They called me again!!!”
*ESPN announcers: “The Tennessee Titans, the University of Alabama, and Nick Saban have all come out and said that any rumors stating that he would be coming to Nashville to coach are false… however, the Titans have announced their top 3 candidates: Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, and a rather unknown name… Teddy Carter? a head coach at the University of Chicago? Hmm… haven’t heard of that name, but the Titans sure know more than we do about who to hire...”*
“I got the job!!! I got the job!!! Sure, the other two coaches both declined because of the state of the franchise, but hey you can’t pick your cake and eat it too, or something like that.”
*ESPN: “In a shocking turn of events, the Tennessee Titans have hired Teddy Carter from the University of Chicago this afternoon, just hours after releasing head coach Ken Whisenhunt… more details on the way”*
*Mike Golic: “Have you even heard of this guy? What are the Titans thinking getting a Division III coach? With all due respect, since legend Bud Adams passed away in 2013, the Titans have only made terrible coaching decisions…”
