‣ Miami strikes out on a few key commits, close in on #2 WR in the country

It's not just Ws for Miami on the recruiting circuit. Although lately, it has felt like it.

#3 OT Kyle Collier released his top three and Miami failed to make the cut, essentially kicking Miami out of the race. Miami is also losing ground on #8 OT James McDonald and #1 OT Nigel Rivero, who currently have them outside of their top three.

Miami targets John Griffin (#1 FB), Derrick Parrish (#6 OLB) and Jeff Smith (#40 TE) all committed elsewhere over the weekend.

Miami is, however, closing on in five-star receiver J.B. O'Connor. The team expects to have the number two WR in the country committed by the end of next month.

‣ Nolan feels defense is still improving.

Safety Derek Nolan, who has emerged as the team's leader on defense the last two seasons, says that the defense is improving but that Saturday's performance isn't who they are, yet.

"I don't think we can just go out and shut down people," says Nolan, "We're not as bad as our first two performances and we're not as good as our last two, we're somewhere in the middle right now. I think we can get there but we're not there, yet."

Nolan has 25 tackles, five tackles for loss and an interception.

Miami continues impressive streak, shuts out Tar Heels amid 'blackout' in 38-0 win
For the second straight week, Miami's defense has outscored their opponent's offense.

That task isn't that hard to do when you complete an even more impressive feat: shutout your opponents in back-to-back weeks.

Miami's defense was flying around and making plays, scoring on safeties and pick sixes, in the team's 38-0 win over North Carolina on Saturday night.

North Carolina, who had all of it's fans wear black, got off to a good start when it got the ball all the way to the Miami five-yard line on the first drive of the game but Anthony Ratliff was intercepted by Evan Siegel on the one-yard line. Miami then went 97 yards on offense and chose to go for it on fourth down but failed to get the touchdown, turning the ball over.

Miami would score on the next play as Derek Nolan tackled Miami native Michael Haley in the backfield for a safety.

"We probably don't go for it if our defense isn't playing lights out," said Miami coach Mark Richt.

The Canes offense soon followed suit as D'Andre Sparks rushed for 110 yards on twelve carries and Jason White completed 20 of 25 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. He was, however, sacked six times.

"We need to protect him better," said offensive coordinator Tony Franklin.

Ratliff was sacked three times for North Carolina and threw three interceptions to Siegel, Nolan and a pick-six to linebacker Parker Kiniry. Mark Bailey, another Miami native on the North Carolina roster, was the lone bright spot with 94 rushing yards.

Scoring Summary
Quarter 1
0:54 (MIA) Team Safety

Wow, you pounded UNC. I remember when I was around more and you got D'Andre Sparks. Kid seems like a real stud. Keep those Canes rolling.

Sparks has been a.....spark for our offense and our program but he's yet to put together that insane season and part of that is our offense and the need to get all of our backs involved.

Thanks for the comment.
