Re: Music City Blues: Tennessee Titans
May 1st, 2016 Brad Frederickson, Titans Insider Draft Recap With the 2016 NFL Draft in the books, head coach Chuck Pagano and general manager Jon Robinson held a short, 30-minute press conference at Nissan Stadium earlier this morning to discuss the three-day event, and to provide a preview of the draft class going forward. With nine picks in the draft, the Titans were able to address most of their needs and acquire talent for the coming years. On trading back one spot and taking Conor Jordan... General Manager Jon Robinson: "We were prepared to take Conor number-one until Cleveland contacted us, and said that Dallas wanted to move up to number-one and take (Michigan State quarterback) Chris Murray. Cleveland offered us a better package than Dallas did, and we took it. Cleveland took Murray at number-one, and we felt good about Conor at number-two. We were thrilled to get him either way, and we picked up some additional selections. It was a good move for both sides." Head coach Chuck Pagano: "Yeah, I'll echo Jon's thoughts...we met with Conor at the Senior Bowl and the Combine, and came away very impressed with his demeanor, his intelligence, and just his overall ability. It's not a 'sexy' pick, but he's really going to help solidify our offensive line, and we're looking forward to working with him going forward." On the philosophy of drafting need versus best overall... Robinson: "We always try to go for the best of both worlds and make every pick like that, but that's just not feasible as there's a lot of uncertainty and unpredictability...you don't know what the other thirty-one teams are going to do. For example, when we drafted Conor, he was at the top of our board and filled a great need for us; depth on the offensive line. Chuck might be a better person to answer this part, but he's a guy that we can see pushing for starter's minutes from day one." Pagano: "Many people might not think it makes much sense to draft a left tackle when you already have one, but Conor could play both sides of the line. He has that kind of ability and the flexibility to make it work. Does that mean he'll be there permanently? No, of course not, but that was a big selling point for him...the other tackle prospects that we saw, we saw as future guards. Conor is a guy that has the ability to stick at left tackle for years to come. He actually compares favorably to Joe Thomas." On the one position they regret not taking in the draft... Robinson: "Honestly, I think we drafted every position that we set out to get. Whether or not these picks work out is yet to be seen, but I think we did what we set out to do here. I think I can speak for Chuck when I say that we're pretty happy with how it turned out." On the one draftee that they felt was underrated by everyone... Robinson: "We were pretty happy when J.C. Green was there with our fifth-round pick. He's someone that we thought about trading back into the fourth round for, but there was little activity in that regard so we decided to sit tight. He played at a lower-level school, and I don't think had as much fanfare as most high-end prospects, but he's every bit as good as the top guys on the board." Pagano: "We really needed an infusion of youth and athleticism in our secondary, and we spent several lower-round picks on defensive backs with top-end speed. J.C. was one of those...he had the best or second-best 40-yard dash at the combine, which got our attention. After reviewing his film, it backed up that 40 time. He played really, really fast. His film was comparable to other top defensive backs on the board." On drafting heavy on pass-rushers... Pagano: "Look, in this division, you have Andrew Luck up in Indianapolis, who I used to coach. Blake Bortles is going to be a very, very good player in this league for a while in Jacksonville. I think Blaine Gabbert has a chance to redeem himself down in Houston. Defensively in today's NFL, with the big passing numbers, and the spread formations, you better have linebackers that can run and rush the passer. Make them make quick decisions. Quinterrius Randall is a huge, athletic guy whom many liken him to DeMarcus Ware. Not quite as tall, but the same kind of speed that he does. The other guys we picked, Duane Roach and Christian McClendon, are cut from the same cloth. Big, speedy guys that can get after the quarterback." Robinson: "Good pass rushers are always going to be in demand; always at a premium. They're kind of like good starting pitchers in baseball. If you're a small-market team like we are, you have to draft and develop them because they're fast becoming one of the top two or three positions in terms of compensation in football, behind quarterbacks and blindside protectors. You can't have too many of them on your team." On being active in the trade market during the draft... Robinson: "I came from an organization in New England that valued draft picks, and really utilized them well. At this stage in the process, it's about acquiring talent. Hopefully, this time next year, we'll have fewer holes to fill and can really go after that one piece that could get us into the playoffs, or get us deep into the playoffs. I think the trades that we made set us up well for next year's draft and beyond." |

Re: Music City Blues: Tennessee Titans
Nice job on the offseason. Looks like you've put a premium on building through the draft which is always a good way to go. I'll be interested to see how the coming season plays out. Also like the Grimm hire. He was one if my favs as a head coach for some older madden franchises I did.

Re: Music City Blues: Tennessee Titans
August 29th, 2016 Brad Frederickson, Titans Insider AFC SOUTH PRIMER 1. HOUSTON TEXANS 2015 Record: 9-7 (AFC South Champion, Wild Card Round) Key Additions: QB Blaine Gabbert, RB Charcandrick West, C Patrick Lewis Synopsis: A lot of the pieces return from last year's 9-7 playoff team, including headliners J.J. Watt, Jadeveon Clowney, Arian Foster, DeAndre Hopkins, and Vince Wilfork. The only serious hole on the roster is at quarterback, where the position has endured a complete do-over from last year. In steps Gabbert, who parlayed his strong showing in San Francisco last year (86.2 rating, 2,031 yards, 63.2%, 10 TD, 7 INT) into a modest three-year, $11.7M deal to get the starting nod at quarterback for the Texans. Brian Hoyer (Cardinals), Brandon Weeden (Jaguars), and T.J. Yates (Colts) have all moved on to new teams, and they brought in Tom Savage and Dominique Davis as cheaper alternatives. Houston also added some depth at running back with Charcandrick West, and signed the best center available in free agency in Patrick Lewis to bolster the offensive line. Hopkins and Mohamed Sanu along with tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz give Gabbert some nice targets to throw to on the outside, and the defense is already by far the best in the division. If Houston can get similar production or better from Gabbert as he did last year in San Francisco, they shouldn't have much of a problem repeating as division champions and heading back to the playoffs. 2. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS 2015 Record: 5-11 (3rd, AFC South) Key Additions: RB Giovani Bernard, G Kelechi Osemele, T Mitchell Schwartz, DE Adrian Clayborn, CB Brandon Boykin, S Husain Abdullah, S Tre Boston, K Justin Tucker It wasn't business-as-usual for the Jaguars, as they were ultra-aggressive in free agency and the trade market. They upgraded the offensive line with Osemele and Schwartz, the pass rush with Clayborn, and Boykin and Abdullah were solid signings in the secondary. Tucker is also an underrated signing, as he has the leg to be a weapon beyond fifty yards consistently. They also jettisoned talented cornerback Dwayne Gratz to Cincinnati for Bernard; and traded strong safety Shawn Williams to San Francisco for free safety Tre Boston, who will fill in for Abdullah while he sits out the first month with a groin tear. Blake Bortles is entering his third season, and there's a sentiment around the organization that this was the target year to make some noise. The Jaguars still have some deficiencies on defense, as they have an aging linebacking corps and a young secondary, but they have the offensive pieces already in place at wide receiver and tight end to be very, very explosive on offense, and possibly overcome any defensive deficiency they might have. Whether all of this is good enough to supplant Houston is quite another matter, but this is certainly the most improved team in the league on paper, and on the hoof is a team that will be in the playoff hunt until season's end. 3. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS 2015 Record: 8-8 (2nd, AFC South) Key Additions: RB Joseph Randle, WR Mike Wallace, TE Jermichael Finley, DT Brandon Mebane It was a surprise when the Colts let Chuck Pagano walk (and right to a division rival, no less), but John Harbaugh is a Super Bowl-quality coach. They still have Andrew Luck, and they added some explosive talent offensively to go with T.Y. Hilton on the perimeter. They also drafted a talented pass-catching tight end Chris Blake out of Georgia in the first round this past spring; and he is similar to Finley at the same age. However, there are some downsides. The right side of the offensive line is still a question mark, and they did very little in the offseason to try and improve on the league's 26th-ranked defense from 2015. Mebane is a nice addition to the front seven, but doesn't add to a pass rush that was in the bottom-third of the league. There's also some consternation about Luck and his overall health heading into 2016, as it's likely going to have to be the he and the offense that carries the mail. With all of that said, It's hard to see them winning the division and overtaking Houston and possibly Jacksonville unless they improve their defense. With Harbaugh now coaching, the defense will likely be addressed next offseason, but will have to settle for high-scoring shootouts in the meantime. 4. TENNESSEE TITANS 2015 Record: 3-13 (4th, AFC South) Key Additions: G Donald Thomas, DE Quinton Coples, WR De'Anthony Thomas Despite having one of the better drafts this past spring, this team is still very much a work-in-progress. 2nd-overall pick Conor Jordan has the ability to have a Joe Thomas-like impact at one tackle, and third-rounder Lawrence Austin should play a lot from the jump at center. Getting Pagano as head coach was a massive coup (and the best offseason "acquisition") for first-time GM Jon Robinson, as he'll have a star quarterback pupil to work with like he did in Indianapolis. If they can keep Marcus Mariota upright and off the injury report, they can at least be league-average offensively as there is some talent (albeit aging) at tight end with Delanie Walker, and at receiver with Dorial Green-Beckham, Kendall Wright, and newcomer De'Anthony Thomas. Coples is a good signing at one defensive end if he can keep his head on straight, and they also pointedly addressed the pass rush in the draft with big, quick linebackers Quinterrius Randall, Christian McClendon, and Duane Roach. But if they don't get to the quarterback at a higher rate, they're going to have problems as the secondary is beginning to show some decline, and they're going to be counting on youngsters at both safety spots. The preseason bore that harsh reality out, as they had issues getting stops on third down against guys like A.J. McCarron and Landry Jones. It's tough to think it would be any better against the other quarterbacks presently in the division.
