COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOP STORIES
The Georgia Bulldogs stand atop the college football world after a victory over South Carolina
BULLDOGS CLAIM TOP SPOT IN POLLS AFTER BIG WIN The Georgia Bulldogs have surged to the #1 spot in the Coaches Poll following a hard-fought win over South Carolina, then ranked eighth nationally. Virtually the entire game was closely contested, with the halftime score being 20–17 Georgia. The two teams tied in the second half to allow Georgia to come away with the win, their second against a Top Ten opponent in as many weeks. After the victory, a fired-up Mark Richt told reporters in his post-game press conference that, “We haven’t even really started.” The Bulldogs are heading into a bye week. They come back to host the North Texas Mean Green, which will serve as a warm-up for when LSU comes to town the week after. If the Bulldogs can outlast the Tigers between the hedges, there does not seem to be an opponent later in the season who they will not have an advantage in talent over, meaning this can be a special season for Richt and his squad.
SEC TITANS BATTLE IN COLLEGE STATION
The reigning back-to-back national champions, the 2 Alabama Crimson, travel to College Station this Saturday to face the
5 Texas A&M Aggies and the 12th Man in what should be a colossal Top Five matchup with huge ramifications for both the SEC title race and the postseason. Thus far this season, the Aggies have soundly defeated two weak opponents, while the Tide put up a mediocre performance against Virginia Tech, skating by 27–21. In the wake of a dominant duo of performances by Georgia, Alabama dropped to the #2 spot in the Coaches Poll, but they could reclaim the top spot with a win over the Aggies. It will be a classic matchup between offensive and defensive masterminds in Kevin Sumlin and Nick Saban, respectively. Last season, Sumlin handed Saban his only defeat on his way to a second consecutive national championship, and fourth overall. This year, as Saban goes for the trifecta, Sumlin and the Aggies again stand in his way, ready to overtake Alabama as the SEC’s elite team.
WOLVERINES OUTLAST IRISH IN OVERTIME
Coming off an average season last year, Brady Hoke and the Michigan Wolverines have been under pressure to prove that they are still one of the blue blood programs of college football. In their first game of the season, they did just that by pulling off a victory against another college football giant, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Contrary to the Wolverines, the Irish had a spectacular season last year, going 12–0 before ending the season on a sour note, getting thrashed by Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game. Notre Dame started this game strong, going up 17–7 by the half. By the end of the third quarter, the Irish led 24–10. However, two touchdowns – one of them with barely a minute left in the game – by the Wolverines tied it, and the game headed into overtime. After both teams exchanged field goals, the Irish kicked again, while Michigan was able to get the ball into the end zone. It was a thrilling finish to an instant classic. Undoubtedly, Michigan moves on with tremendous momentum, while the Irish must win out in order to have a chance at a repeat appearance in the national title game.
SEC, BIG 12 MATCHUP AS OLE MISS TAKES ON TEXAS
The 23 Ole Miss Rebels travel to Austin this Saturday to play the
12 Texas Longhorns in what represents a fascinating matchup of coaches. Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze, in his second year, is already seen as something of a wunderkind in Oxford. He took the team from 2–10 the year before he arrived to 7–6 with a bowl win in his first season. Now, fans are excited to see what is next, and Freeze and the Rebels have delivered some good signs so far. Meanwhile, Texas head coach Mack Brown, in his 16th year coaching the Longhorns, is increasingly seen as being past his prime. While the Longhorns played for the 2009 national championship, they have not come close to making the big stage since. Both coaches and teams have a lot on the line in this one beyond pride. A strong out-of-conference resume is a key differentiator in the BCS poll, and for both of these teams to have a chance at either the title game or the Sugar Bowl, a win here would go a long way.
