Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)
Jets Gameday Preview: Week 13 We're into the home stretch of the season now, and the Colts come in to wrap up the Jets' long home stand in what is a very important Monday Night game. Okay. We're into December, so the end of the season is in sight. Does that mean playoffs, or does that mean going home unhappy? We know how much B-Marsh wants it, having never played a single postseason snap. The Jets, as a team, are in pretty good shape. They have some work to do, sitting a full game behind Tennessee for the last Wild Card spot. At this point, the division is probably out of reach. After last week's win, the Patriots hold a 3 game lead with 5 to play, a lead that they almost certainly will not blow. So, the Jets are locked in a wild card race. After holding Tom Brady under 200 passing yards last week, the Jets now own the league's #1 overall defense. On the flip side, it would be nice to see some consistent offensive production from somebody other than Gronk and Gurley, but the Jets are finding ways to win, which is very important, considering that 2 of the Jets' 5 remaining games are against division leaders (NE and SF), and this game tonight is against a 5-6 Colts team that might be struggling, but still knows how to score points, and still finds themselves in the playoff race as well. Take nothing for granted this evening. Andrew Luck has been doing it all for the Colts this season. As expected, they are a pass first team, and the crew of T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, and tight end Dwayne Allen are his pass catching clique. This past spring, the seasoned vet Frank Gore was brought in to balance the Indy offense, but he has taken the back seat to Charles Sims III, who has been a breakout talent this season after bouncing around a little bit, starting with Tampa and ending with free agency. He has provided a huge spark in the run game, but the life of this team still depends on the arms of the man with the flip phone. The Colts defense, however, is average at best. They've been the Achilles heel of this team all year, so maybe, just maybe, the Jets can get a little bit of offense tonight. Looking at the bodies of this defense, you'll see Kendall Langford, Chris Canty, and Zach Kerr up front, the former two being experienced veterans going through tough times this year, and the latter starting to show his true potential in his third year in the league. Moving back a level now, we'll find Erik Walden, tackle machine D'Qwell Jackson, and vets Trent Cole and Robert Mathis. These four represent the best this defense has to offer, whether it be in coverage, rushing the passer, or stopping the run. They've proven themselves in the NFL for years upon years to be fantastic athletes, and wonderful men. You could argue that they do a better job in pass coverage than the secondary, which features Vontae Davis, Patrick Robinson, Louis Delmas, and Mike Adams. No matter how you view it, this just might be the most important game for the Jets this season, trying to snap a two game home losing streak, and what we'd like to think is the most entertaining Monday Night Football game this season. At least Gruden thinks so.

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)
Gameday Recap: Jets 58, Colts 44 Offensive explosion led by Geno's 6 TDs, 400 yards Gronk celebrates his long TD in the second, just one of the many explosive plays the Jets' offense had on the day, but it did come with a price: Gronk left shortly after this play with a ruptured disk, and is out for the rest of the regular season. Ordinarily, I would be very upset over what was probably a very humiliating loss. The pass coverage was abysmal. Other than Revis, the Jet's secondary appeared flat-footed, perhaps a result of the incredibly physical and emotional game last week. Andrew Luck picked apart the Jets, but the reason that I'm satisfied with the result of this game is because the Colts' defense played even worse. The only thing they had going for them was Zach Kerr, who recovered two fumbles, one for a touchdown, and the blocked extra point after the third New York touchdown. With all of that in mind, the game couldn’t have started much worse for the Jets. The Colts took the ball right down the field on the game’s opening drive, with Luck and Charles Sims making the Jets look foolish. If it weren’t for a Jets’ goal line stand, something they’re quickly becoming known for, the Colts would have taken an early 7-0 lead. But, since the Jets got that stop at the goal line, the Colts were stuck with a chip shot field goal from the ageless wonder Adam Vinatieri. But it gets better. The 2nd play for the Jets offense was a screen to Gurley, which he very quickly fumbled, recovered by the aforementioned Zach Kerr, and returned to the onset of field goal range. Thankfully, the Jets’ defense returned the favor. Leonard Williams sacked and stripped Luck, while Jordan Jenkins scooped and scored, quickly making it 7-3 Jets, and setting the tone for the onslaught of points that would follow. Williams wraps up Luck, knocking the ball loose, with Jordan Jenkins (48) ready to pounce. Jenkins makes his move, scooping it up… And finally, Jenkins eludes a last minute surge by Sims to hit pay dirt. But, the Colts weren’t just going to roll over. They took up the remaining 7 minutes of the 1st quarter taking their time, and chipping away at that Jets defense, until Luck finally found T.Y. Hilton from 3 yards out on the first play of the 2nd, making it 10-7 Indy. So, the Jets only ran two plays in the first quarter, and one of them was a fumble by the same guy who cost the Jets a victory last week. It was all good, though. Gurley redeemed himself by breaking off a 67 yard run on the first play after the kickoff, putting the Jets in the red zone. The only small hiccup after that was the 5 plays it took the Jets to score from inside the 5, including the 1 yard dash on 4th down by Gurley that finally got them in. But the Colts still wouldn’t go away. Charles Sims broke free on the edge, taking it 25 yards to the house, all of three minutes later, and it was Indy in the lead once again, 17-14. That’s when the Jets went off and didn’t look back. It started with Geno finding Gronk only somewhat wide open on a crossing route. He immediately took off, or was it just the Colts’ DBs slowing down, and 53 yards later, did a Gronk Spike. The PAT was blocked, so it was still a field goal game. The Jets finally got a stop, and the Colts had to punt into the wind from deep in their own territory, so the Jets started out in pretty good shape. Geno, sensing a pretty big opportunity, got it right back to Gronk on two straight plays, the second being another long catch and run, this time of 39 yards, and the Colts could sense that this game was quickly getting out of hand, which is why, on the ensuing drive, Luck threw it up to T.Y. in the end zone, in one on one coverage with Marcus Gilchrist. I think Gilchrist won that battle, coming down with the pick. The Jets had 80 yards, one minute, and two timeouts to work with, and were certainly feeling it. Guess who Geno went after? Why, Gronk, of course! He found his superstar over the middle (after a couple of plays) to get the Jets in field goal range, but that wasn’t good enough, even when Gronk wouldn’t get up. The air came out of the MetLife Stadium crowd, as this looked pretty serious. Gronk was holding his back, which has been his weakness over the last couple of years with the Patriots. He eventually got up, but his playing time in 2016 was done, at least in the regular season. With what turned out to be a ruptured disk, he’ll be out until at least the Divisional Round of the playoffs, if the Jets happen to get there. Nice pick, Gilchrist. Luck really overthrew that one, didn't he? Geno didn’t want to have that bring the whole team down, so to keep morale up, he called the same play, and threw it right to Jace Amaro, Gronk’s replacement, who took it down inside the 10 to around the 5. Devin Smith got the job done from there, hauling in a bullet from Geno in heavy traffic, stretching the Jets’ halftime lead to 34-17. The third quarter turned into the Devin Smith show. It is important to know that the Jets still maintained a balanced offense, running it with Gurley on 1st down, then having Geno Smith hook up with Devin Smith on a play action bootleg for a 74 yard touchdown, making it 41-17. The Colts took some of the momentum away, embarking on a 4 minute drive ending with a long 55 yard field goal by Vinatieri. No worries, because both Smiths, Geno and Devin, weren’t done. 47 seconds, and one Devin Smith 68 yard catch, later, the Jets were back to making the Colts look like a high school team. It was 48-20 with just under 7 minutes left in the third, so Todd Bowles wanted to break 60 badly, almost too badly. He lost track of his defense, but it didn’t matter much in the end, since Donte Moncrief absolutely Mossed Calvin Pryor, in order to pull in a 26 yard touchdown from Luck, making it 48-27, which would hold until the end of the quarter. I forget which long Devin Smith TD this is, but both of them looked just like this, with Smith roaming free down the sideline, without a single Colt in sight. Woah.... That was an impressive catch by Donte Moncrief, getting WAY above Calvin Pryor to bring it in. The Jets proceeded to embark on their longest drive of the day, culminating with Amaro’s 5 yard TD that gave Geno his sixth TD pass on the day, all without throwing a single INT. The teams traded field goals after that, so it was 58-30 at the two minute warning. The Colts were driving once again, and Luck made it a little more interesting by finding Hilton for another TD, this one from just a yard out. After Zach Kerr bull rushed, getting to Geno before he could even hand it off to Gurley to run the clock out, Geno fumbled, since the ball was already transitioning from Smith to Gurley, and Kerr picked it up and ran it back 17 yards to pad the stats, and make it look like the Colts were competitive in this game, even though they weren’t.

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)
Jets Gameday Preview: Week 14 The Jets are heading to California for the first time all season, and they hope to feel some California Love in the state of the art Levi's Stadium, home of last year's Super Bowl. Everyone in the NFL has 4 games left, or one quarter of their season. If you told me back in September that the San Francisco 49ers would be leading the NFC West, instead of everybody's Super Bowl pick, Arizona, Seattle, and a Rams team with a bunch of motivation after moving to LA, I would have laughed at you and then given you the name and address of the nearest mental institution. You see, way back in September, even before that, if you just looked at this roster, you would have noticed a distinct lack of talent, especially on the offensive side of the football. When you look the stats, this theory has held up. San Francisco possesses the NFL's absolute worst defense, in terms of total yards, and yards through the air. I guess that's what happens when your starting quarterback is Blaine Gabbert. There's no denying that he just doesn't have the skill set to be an NFL starting quarterback, and he's had trouble all year connecting with his average to mediocre receivers, which include Torrey Smith, Quinton Patton, and Bruce Ellington. The almost exclusive source of yards and scoring has been Carlos Hyde, who has got to be the team MVP after carrying them on his back to this point in the season. It still baffles me how this team is 7-5. We've already discussed how bad their offense is, so you would think that they must have a world class defense, right? Nope. The Niners defense is a Chip Kelly defense, meaning that it can't possibly be anything to write home about. Statwise, they come into this game in the bottom third of the league in every major defensive category. Furthermore, they've been horrendous at home, 2-4 thus far, albeit one of those wins coming against the 9-3 New Orleans Saints. So, for a Jets team that hasn't lost a road game since September (and hasn't even played a road game in over a month), playing with a top tier defense and an offense that dropped 58 on the Colts last Monday, this could potentially be the game that gets them in the position the want to be in going into their final playoff push. Even though they don't have Gronk, and won't have him until the Divisional Round if they get that far, their offense comes in feeling pretty good about themselves.

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)
Gameday Recap: Jets 43, 49ers 24 Jets pull away after strong second half You can just barely see Brandon Marshall running free, past Tramaine Brock, and you can just see the ball being released by Geno. In a driving rainstorm, Geno threw a dart to Marshall, who ran the rest of the way, but then dropped the two point play that would have tied the game at 17. The score of this game implies that the Jets enforced their will, putting up another big day on offense, and shutting San Francisco. But, that really wasn't the case. Yes, the offense was fantastic for the second time in six days, we can at least admit that. The reigning AFC Offensive Player of the Week led a balanced offensive attack, refusing to throw an interception for the second straight game, and not coughing the ball up for the first time in a game all year. He also got some protection, only getting sacked twice, another low on the season. The Jets defense played great, if you ignore the 4 big plays that led to points. But, we can't ignore those big plays, and the run defense certainly needs to improve if the Jets are going to make a serious playoff run here in the final three games of the season. San Francisco took the ball first and gave it to Carlos Hyde. In the cold water, he was their lifeline tonight. On the first drive, however, the Jets kept him in check, caused the drive to stall just past midfield, and allowed Bradley Pinion to shank a punt, giving the Jets decent field position, which only improved after Todd Gurley's first carry of the day went for 25 yards. Geno methodically led the Jets down the field, and on 3rd and goal from the 1, called an audible at the line, taking the ball out of Gurley's hands, instead running a play fake to find a wide open Tommy Bohanon in the flat, as he got clobbered by Arik Armstead. But, like he has all season long, Nick Folk missed a kick in the wind and driving rain, so it was 6-0, and that was when the Niners got their big plays. Carlos Hyde put them on the board, and in the lead, on the first 3rd down of the next drive, jogging untouched for 74 yards. A couple plays after Folk clanked a 43 yard field goal off the upright, Blaine Gabbert went untouched for 47 yards on a read option, also on 3rd down. Now it was 14-6, and Todd Bowles hadn't gotten a chance to blink since his team's initial scoring drive. I didn't know Gabbert was capable of making good decisions on the read option, or on any play. This particular good decision, and a lack of Jets tackling, led to a touchdown. The Jets got on the board again with under 3 minutes to play with a made field goal from Folk (for once), thinking they would get their chance in the second half, since they would be getting the ball first. But, Carlos Hyde got loose again, taking it into field goal range almost immediately, and giving the Niners over 200 rushing yards in the first half, a mark that hadn't been reached against the Jets since the week 2 blowout in Buffalo. Phil Dawson's chip shot made it 17-9 with 58 seconds left in the half, but the Jets wouldn't stay down for long. On the first play after the kickoff, B-Marsh beat Tramaine Brock off the line of scrimmage, and Geno threw a dart for a 74 yard catch and run, making it 17-15. Bowles decided to go for two, and got it to Marshall again, but he dropped it after taking a couple steps and a hit, almost enough to be a fumble rather than an incompletion, although it wouldn't have mattered too much. The Jets took the momentum into the locker room, and then ran with it. In Sam Freday's world, there is nothing better than an 8 minute TD drive to open up the game, or the second half. Leading the Jets down the field his way, Geno Smith looked like a very good NFL quarterback, and not the guy he had seemed like for most of the season, until last week. On third and goal from the six, instead of forcing it into Devin Smith on the slant, he took it himself right up the hole in the A gap, waltzing into the end zone, and putting the Jets back in front 22-17. The Jets defense rose the momentum of their offense and finally got a stop. The Jets opened the fourth quarter with another long drive, ending in another hookup between Geno and B-Marsh, an 11 yard pass on third down after a sack, in which Marshall got into the end zone by putting a nasty stiff arm on Eric Reid. With just about 7 minutes left in the game, the Jets had a two score lead, so things looked good. First, Geno finds a rift in the Niners coverage inside the 10, which is hard to do, unless you're really bad, like the Niners. I don't know how many times I can stress that I don't understand how this team is leading the NFC West. Then, on the next drive, Marshall's nasty stiff arm puts the game out of reach with 7 minutes left to play. After trading punts, the Niners took over at their own 5, looking to do something miraculous in the last three minutes. Blaine Gabbert, proving why he commands the league's worst offense, threw it away twice before throwing it to Quinton Patton, in one-on-one coverage with Revis. It was a jump ball, the kind of play Revis almost never screws up. He made the play once again, the game was brought to the two minute warning as soon as he hit the ground, at the San Francisco 35 yard line. The Jets were certainly trying to run the clock and put the game away, but when the red sea parts in front of Todd Gurley, how could you resist? The young stud took it to the house en route to totalling over 200 yards himself, surpassing the 200 yards San Fran put together as a team. Gabbert wasn't done, though. He hadn't really thrown the ball all day, but once the turnovers began, the floodgates opened. Marcus Gilchrist stepped in front of an out route, and brought it back 15 yards or so to around the 20. Once again, the Jets figured that if the 49ers couldn't be bothered to stop the run, then why not just take it to the house? They couldn't possibly mind that much, right? T-Gurls officially got over 200 yards while giving the Jets a 43-17 lead. Gabbert added a garbage time TD pass to Carlos Hyde that only happened because Revis literally froze in place, but that only matters if you were rooting for the Jets to hold SF to under 100 passing yard like I was, an accomplishment that would have been achieved if Revis didn't glitch out. Before he froze in time, Revis went up, told Quinton Patton he was a sorry receiver (a la Richard Sherman), then took the ball right out of his hands, ending the 49ers' hopes for a comeback. 8-5, with three games to go, yet we don't even control our own destiny. We're just sitting here hoping the Titans or Chargers lose at any given time.
