Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)
Gameday Recap: Jets 29, Panthers 21 Mariota's fantastic performance helps Jets overcome injuries Marcus Mariota had his best game as a Jet, when they needed him the most. With Gronk and Gurley down for the count, the Jets QB stepped up big time. Here, he sneaks a pass by the leaping Shaq Thompson, leading Mike Williams perfectly, who took it the rest of the way to the house. Should we expect Mariota to play this well every week? Yes. Will he play this well every week? No. So, when he has these good games, we have to take them. Don’t be fooled by that stat line and the one interception you’ll find in it. That was a one handed interception by Luke Kuechly, pulling the ball away from 3rd string tight end Kellen Davis. If anybody else besides Davis and Kuechly were involved in that play, that wouldn’t have happened. The other thing he did well? Manage the game. The Jets had almost no production from Matt Forte in the running game until the fourth quarter, so it was all on Mariota. The Panthers brought a lot of pressure, and Mariota was forced to make quick decisions, which ordinarily cause turnovers. But today, he found holes in coverage, and the Jets receivers stepped up, specifically Mike Williams and Jace Amaro. The Panthers didn’t quit, and made it close, but Mariota was too dominant in this game for the Panthers to come back and win. Leonard Williams emphatically ended the game’s first drive with a huge sack of Cam Newton, causing a three and out. The Jets took the ball down the field quickly, but the drive stalled inside the five because of the Jets’ inability to run the football, something they’ve been so accustomed to this season. They had it at the 1 for 4th and goal, and came out to go for it, trying to start the game off an aggressive tone. Mariota tried to draw the Panthers’ front line offside, which in hind sight, wouldn’t have done much. Instead, Jets guard Brian Winters jumped, and Nick Folk had to come on for a chip shot field goal. Cam Newton and the Carolina offense quickly silenced the crowd when he broke a couple tackles, even taking a Heisman pose before crossing the goal line on his 39 yard touchdown scamper, topped off by a bunch of dabs and a cotton eyed Joe dance. The Jets rebounded quickly, highlighted by that pass we were talking about from Mariota to Williams, just sneaking it past Shaq Thompson. The score by the Jets’ rookie made it 10-7, and gave the Jets the lead they wouldn’t give up again. The Jets even had one more chance before the half to get some points, but that incredible interception by Kuechly derailed that train, so it was 10-7 at the half, with both defenses playing well. Cam Newton throws out a stiff arm to Marcus Williams that missed, but it didn't matter, because he scored anyway, thanks to Corey Brown (10) coming into block Williams. Instead, Newton looks like he's throwing up a Heisman pose, which is okay, since he won the award while in college at Auburn. Luke Kuechly has one hand tied up with Kellen Davis, but still gets his free hand up by Davis's face to make a play on the ball, and ends up securing it, with those big strong mitts of his. It wasn't a bad pass by Mariota, just one helluva play by the captain of the Panthers' defense. To start the second half, Mariota kept relying on his arm, and the duo of Williams and Amaro, with a dash of Forte, Devin Smith, and Kellen Davis mixed in. It was Amaro who caught the perfect lob from Super Mario, beat Shaq Thompson, and jogged into the end zone to make it 17-7. But, a quick mental breakdown from Rontez Miles, who’s having a solid season, led to a Carolina touchdown. Cam Newton threw a high strike to Devin Funchess who had to leave his feet. Miles and Darqueze Dennard were looking at each other deciding who was going to hit him, allowing Funchess to gather himself and almost walk the rest of the 54 yards to the end zone. Another drive the stalled in the red zone because of the inconsistent running game, so Nick Folk came on and continued his almost historic season, knocking in another field goal to make it 20-14. He would add one more later on to make it 19/20 in terms of field goals made and attempted in the 2017 season. Only up by one score, the Jets needed a stop, and they got one after Erin Henderson knocked Greg Olsen out of game with a monster hit, and a sack by rookie Elijah Lee, filling in for Jordan Jenkins, essentially bringing the 3rd quarter to an end. Jace Amaro concentrates to catch this perfectly placed pass from Mariota, and then worries about running upfield, unlike some other people on the Jets (yeah, Devin Smith, I'm talking about you and all of your drops). The Panthers got back into it after Devin Funchess went up to get this bulled of a pass from Cam Newton, then ran it the rest of the way to the end zone, cutting the Jets lead to 17-14. The Jets’ success through the air continued in the 4th quarter. Jace Amaro caught another lob, on the same play as before, and beat James Bradberry to sneak in the corner of the end zone, adding to the Jets lead, making it 26-14, after the two point attempt failed. But, with just about 9 minutes to play, the game seemed out of reach. It would have to take a lot from Cam Newton in order for the Panthers to make a game of it. But, then again, this is the team that has held the #1 seed in the NFC each of the last two years, and held it again this season until their loss last week. Superman Cam led his squad on a devilishly long drive, lasting 7 minutes, in which they looked like that team that played in the Super Bowl two seasons ago. Newton took the short completions that the Jets’ zone defense gave him, and after 13 plays, he found Corey Brown open in the corner of the end zone, cutting the Jets lead down to five, with just over two minutes left. Carolina had all three timeouts left, and the two minute warning, so they kicked it deep. The Jets didn’t see the harm in throwing the football in this scenario, since the clock was going to stop either way. Well, after Kony Ealy penetrated and brought Mariota down for a sack, the Jets found themselves in a pickle. Out of the two minute warning,he tried to make up the yardage by dishing out a screen pass to Forte, and then finding Devin Smith over the middle, but it was still way short. On 4th and 7 from their own 38, 100 seconds to play, the Panthers still with one timeout, the Jets went for it. That’s right, folks! Todd Bowles went for it, up 5 in his own territory. Talk about not having any faith in your defense! I don’t know why he didn’t, since the Jets defense has been among the league’s best all year. He called a post for Amaro over the middle, but immediately upon snapping the ball, Mariota looked to Forte running an out route. Before the Panthers knew what hit them, Forte was running wild down the visitor’s sideline. Kurt Coleman finally caught up to him, but not before Forte scampered well into Carolina territory. After a couple of running plays, the Jets brought in Nick Folk to add an exclamation point to the game. Well, here we sit at 8-3, on top of the league (except for Seattle and KC). How long can we keep this up? Gronk is still out for one more week, and Gurley is sidelined for 3 more weeks. Will getting Gronk back be enough? Will Mariota start turning the ball over again whenever he gets rattled? Will the Jets head into Foxboro next Monday night and collapse like they did last year? Will all of these injuries, and the tough schedule to end the season, derail the Jets’ momentum as they try to get to the postseason? Find out next week, as the Jets take on the new dynamic duo of Bill Belichick and Brad Kaaya.

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)
Jets Gameday Preview: Week 13 Oh boy... Gillette Stadium at night. Is there anything scarier in the NFL besides Roger Goodell himself? So, what exactly is at stake here? For starters, there's the division, but the Jets have a little more room to breathe in that department after the Patriots' shocking home loss to the Dolphins 8 days ago. Before that, the Beasts of the East, and reigning Super Bowl Champions, had won every single one of their games since the Jets put a 37-12 whoopin' on them in October at MetLife, five games in all. The win streak had put them back into the playoff picture after a 1-4 start in their first season without Tom Brady. But, as far as the Jets are concerned, they can be the ones stuck in the Wild Card spot, after years of a chokehold on this AFC East. What else is at stake? There's the obvious: the #1 seed, or at least a first round bye, both of which are very reasonable possibility for the Jets. They sit two games behind Kansas City, but in case you didn't know, the two teams are planning to butt heads just six days from now in East Rutherford. In that sense, the #1 seed is in reach. But, the thing that I'm most concerned about is the streak. Yes, that streak. Since Sam Freday joined Coach Bowles as the two main governing bodies of this team at the start of last season, the Jets have not allowed their rivals to score an offensive touchdown on them. Last season's meetings featured a 12-10 Pats win in East Rutherford, followed by a 26-21 on Christmas Eve in Foxboro, with 4 field goals and two touchdowns, scored on pick sixes thrown by Geno Smith. And, the 37-12 rout earlier this season saw 4 field goals made by the illustrious Stephen Gostkowski. Will this record stand tonight, in front of Gruden and Friends? It's not humanly possible for Marcus Mariota to play another game as well as the game he played last week. The atmosphere at Gillette is just too overpowering. Every visitor, no matter what your credentials, shakes upon entering. Every playcaller is struck with anxiety every third down when that deafening fog horn is blared for all of New England to hear. RoundingThird loves the fog horn, but every time he hears it when playing as the visitor, his playcalling skills magically deteriorate, an effect that only does worse things to his players. Remember last year? Geno threw 7 interceptions. That's right, seven. And as it turns out, the Jets could have easily won that game. Interception #7 came at the goal line in the waning moments. A touchdown would have put the Jets up 27-26, with either the point after or two point conversion only serving to add insurance. What kept the Jets in that game? Defense. Defense is a must in order to win at Gillette. And this Jets defense is far better than last year's Jets defense. They've been #1 overall for much of the year, and after last week's game, they passed those pesky Chiefs for #1 in every major category except scoring. And, this week, we're back at full strength on defense. Jordan Jenkins returns from his injury, although rookie Elijah Lee had been playing great in his absence, recording his first career sack last week. It's the offense that remains depleted. Can we last one more week relying on the arm of Mariota? One more week until Gronk gets back. At least at that point, he can throw up near those big mitts, and hope to get by that way. But this week, for the second week in a row, it's up to him to make plays. He's not alone, though. There's still Mike Williams and Jace Amaro, who is sure to be a hot commodity in the free agent market this spring. What has turned around the Patriots' season? Brad Freakin' Kaaya. In college at Miami, he wasn't anything to write home about, but neither was Brady in college. That's how good at scouting and player development the Kraft family and Coach Belichick are. Remember when I edited players earlier in the season, swapping out all game-generated rookies for the real-life counterparts? Kaaya replaced Stuart McKinley, and as soon as he did, the Pats went from 1-4 and desperate to 6-4 and as intimidating as they were in the days of Brady. They formed a truly balanced attack, Kaaya making plays with his arm or his legs, Dion Lewis running the ball or taking screens for 30+ yards. But, a big reason why the Dolphins shocked the world last week? Lewis went down early with a torn ACL, joining fellow HB James White on IR, and leaving the Patriots with Paul Perkins as the bell cow for the remainder of the season. With Belichick's mantra of "Do Your Job," I don't think it will matter too much, but as always, it's worth noting. Kaaya's receiving core is at full strength, though. Martellus Bennett is his big meaty tight end, pulling in anything that moves, lining up along the fantastic trio of Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, and old friend Eric Decker. Rookie Zay Jones from East Carolina has also played a critical role during this rejuvenation phase of New England's season. The Patriots' defense hasn't played up to its usual standards this season, and the situation certainly isn't helped with the injuries in the secondary, to All-Pro safety Devin McCourty and corner Cyrus Jones. But, the front line is still one of the best in the league, as the Patriots are tied for the NFL lead in sacks. Leading that cause, of course, is Sheldon Richardson, although the guy that replaced him on the Jets (Leonard Williams) has had a fantastic season in his own right. Anyhow, Richardson is joined up there by Jabaal Sheard, Alan Branch, and the ever-intimidating Terrance Knighton, who is still seething with rage from being called fat in that Bridgestone commerical awhile back. Even the Patriots' linebackers are a solid group; it seems as though, just like the first meeting, the overwhelming weakness of this team is the secondary, the same area that has plagued them in years past. But, let's start with those LBs. In the fantasy world that we call this game, Jamie Collins is still going strong as a member of the Patriots, much to his delight, instead of finding himself on the Browns as he does every time he opens his eyes in the real world. Playing along side him is the hard-hitting rookie from Alabama, Reuben Foster, and flanking them are another Crimson Tide product Dont'a Hightower, and Anthony Hitchens, who forced a couple of turnovers in the first meeting this season. Finally, in that secondary, Logan Ryan and Malcolm Butler hold down the fort, while Patrick Chung calls the shots from what many call the "centerfield" position. Filling in for McCourty at the other safety spot is young journeyman Johnson Bademosi. We'll see how this one goes. For the Pats, it's #DoYourJob. For the Jets, it's #NextManUp, which also happens to be a common Belichick saying. So, instead we'll steal an Al Davis saying. #JustWinBabyWin.

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)
Gameday Recap: Jets 27, Patriots 24 (OT) Jets turn 21 point halftime deficit into the most incredible of wins Have a day Jace Amaro! The free agent to be broke Johnson Bademosi's diving attempt at a tackle at the midfield Gillette Stadium logo, and he was gone. This was his fourth touchdown, and the game's final play, as the score put the Jets ahead 27-24 halfway through the overtime period. Pardon my French, but holy ****. That game was something else. Down 21-0 at halftime the Jets mounted a comeback for the ages, hindered by a missed extra point by Nick Folk and a fumble at the Patriots’ 2 by Matt Forte. You could say that the Jets should have won this in overtime, because that fumble occurred when the Jets were just trying to center the ball for a Nick Folk field goal. But it didn’t matter, because Jace Amaro just took over, scoring all four of the Jets touchdowns, including the game winning 69 yarder. The Jets went from being outmatched, outplayed, sloppy, and lackadaisical in the first half, to determined, unstoppable, and unbreakable in the second half. Nobody’s ever seen Bill Belichick cry, but he’s never come closer than he did the moment Jace Amaro broke the plane in overtime, especially considering Stephen Gostkowski had drilled a field goal to start overtime. His ploy of signing rookie HB Matt Dayes right before the game, as a way to fool the Jets, rendering their game preparations useless, hadn’t paid off. The game started with a bang, and before the Jets knew it, their illustrious streak of not allowing the Patriots to score an offensive touchdown was over. The opening kickoff was returned quietly out to the 27 yard line by the very recently signed Matt Dayes, the rookie tailback from North Carolina State. Out came Brad Kaaya, and his first play was a simple drop back, with Eric Decker running a curl route. The young stud got absolutely nailed by the right side of the Jets defensive line, Mo Wilkerson and Jordan Jenkins, but he got it off to Decker. All of a sudden, Darqueze Dennard came out of nowhere trying to jump the play, but missed, leaving Decker free to run as long as he wanted. 73 yards later, the streak was over. Not only did the Patriots have their first offensive touchdown against the Jets in two years, they put the Jets in a very desperate place very early in the game, and that would be the key (at least until halftime). Eric Decker probably said something like "Gimme that" to Darqueze Dennard, trying to ball hawk, as he wrestled a completion from the hands of a turnover. On the back end of that same play, Decker finishes his little touchdown stroll. As you can see, Rontez Miles (45) is the closest Jet to him. Why did we ever trade Decker away? It seems to be working out well for both teams. Mariota did an amazing job of managing the game under the circumstances. With the crowd jacked up after that opening score, he slowly picked his way through the Pats’ weak secondary, completing his first five pass attempts to 4 different men, getting the Jets into the red zone with a certain indistinguishable poise. But, the Patriots pass rush, the best in the league, finally started to get to him. On a second down play inside the 10, Mariota gave up and was readying to just take the sack from Jabaal Sheard, but he couldn’t let himself get sacked without coughing up the football. Jamie Collins came from nearby, picked it up and ran. Coach Bowles thought he was gone, but Mike Williams made the hustle play and brought him down inside the Jets’ 30. But, the Jets started to get sloppy. After a quick outlet pass to Edelman got them inside the 10, Brad Kaaya drew Wilkerson offside on consecutive plays. After that, Matt Dayes had the easiest touchdown run of his career, a two yard scamper in which he was untouched. Just like that, it was 14-0. When the Jets got the ball back, the offensive line decided to fall asleep. Every time Mariota threw the ball, he either got sacked or hit hard. When he did get it off, it was dropped most times by guys like Devin Smith, Vincent Jackson, Matt Fort, even Jace Amaro got in on the fun. The Jets tried running it, but we remind you again that the Patriots have the best defensive line in football, so of course, they were all over it. Lachlan Edwards’ punt led to a decent return from the rookie Zay Jones. The Jets stuffed Kaaya’s offense on the first two plays, but he threw up a jump ball on third and long, and once again, it was Decker winning the battle against Dennard in the red zone. The first quarter ended with the Patriots on the brink of scoring again, and it was looking like it would be a long night for Jets fans. There's no question it was a fumble. The ball is clearly out before that knee and elbow hit the ground. It was just really aggravating, because it killed a great looking drive, and turned the tide in favor of the 21-0 scoring run that would ensue. When Kaaya forced one up in the end zone on 3rd and goal, the Jets felt a little better about themselves. Dee Milliner stepped up to get credit with the interception, the only thing he really contributed all day. Anyway, it didn’t matter too much, because on the very next play, Mariota threw one off Devin Smith’s helmet (Smith’s fault, not Mariota’s), and after going straight up in the air, it was Johnson Bademosi, the backup safety filling in for the injured Devin McCourty, coming down with it. Two plays after that, Kaaya made up for his previous red zone woes by connecting with Danny Amendola for a touchdown a play after Amendola shifted out wide after Eric Decker left the game after getting his bell rung by Rontez Miles. 21-0 Patriots. The rest of the first half was hard to witness. The pass blocking broke down for the Jets constantly, Mariota could do almost nothing, Forte couldn’t do anything on the ground himself. A forced pass up into coverage resulted in a one handed interception by Malcolm Butler, then a couple of stalled drive led to failed 4th down conversions. The only good news? The Jets defense was starting to settle in, and play like the #1 defense that they are. They didn’t know it yet, but they wouldn’t allow another point until Gostkowski’s overtime field goal. The entire Jets offense limped into the locker room, where they were met with a bang by Coach Bowles’ yelling. Whatever he said, whatever colorful language he used, it worked. Let’s leave it at that. It can be said that this athletic interception by Malcolm Butler was the last major highlight of the day for the Patriots. It's very un-Patriot like to blow a 21-0 halftime lead, but that's exactly what happened. The Jets got the ball out of the break, and put together a nice looking drive, but once again, the drive stalled out in field goal range. Since a field goal wasn’t going to help anything, the Jets went for it again, but couldn’t get it. We were starting to sense a pattern. But, after watching how inspired the Jets defense was playing, considering they were down 21-0, Mariota gave his troops a pep talk. Finally, things turned around for the Jets offense. Blocks were being layed by all players, not just the linemen, and with two minutes to play in the penultimate quarter, the Jets were finally on the board, and they liked how it felt. With something to play for now, the defense got a quick stop, and the Jets went no huddle, getting down inside the 10 in about one minute. The only reason they stopped to take their time to call a play was when time ran out on the third quarter. Mariota began the fourth quarter by connecting with Amaro for touchdown number two, of four, for both men. However, in the excitement that ensued on the Jets bench, Nick Folk hurried, and let his extra point attempt float out to the right, leaving the score at 21-13. Coach Bowles went from jumping like a little kid to seething with rage, looking like he wanted to choke somebody (not Folk, because of how great he’s been this season). With all of the pressure on them now, the Patriots got their best drive of the second half going. They started to run the ball well with Dayes, who finished with over 100 yards. Kaaya used the run to set up play action, repeatedly going to it on third downs. On a short third down just on the brink of Gostkowski’s field goal range, Kaaya tried it again, but the Jets were all over it. They brought a blitz, and Jordan Jenkins pummeled the Patriots rookie QB right out of his bootleg. Bowles pumped his fists in excitement as the Jets got the ball back. Ryan Allen’s punt however, was a good one, going out of bounds at the 14 yard line. With 8:30 to play, the Jets weren’t taking any chances. For all they knew, it was a two possession game, because there was no guarantee that the two point attempt would be successful if they managed another touchdown. So, Mariota ran the no huddle again. A screen to Forte started it off, then a bullet over the middle to Mike Williams for a big gain across mid field. He had nothing on the next play, taking another sack from Sheard, who was one of the few Pats’ players to cause a pain for the entire game, and not just the first half. On that 2nd down and 16 from the 39, Mariota found Amaro (who else?), who made Logan Ryan miss, then turned up field, and beat a myriad of other Patriots in a foot race to the end zone, doing a somersault as he crossed the pylon. But, there was still work to do. Someone had to make a big play to tie the game, and it ended up being Kenbrell Thompkins. He didn’t have a catch up to that point, or even a target, and even though it wouldn’t be considered a catch, he made himself wide open by running across the field just two or three yards past the line of scrimmage. Mariota threw a strike, and this game was tied, with 6:42 to play. Jace Amaro was on his way to tying the game, but only because of the great block dished out by Mike Williams (89) on Logan Ryan. In the first half, nobody was doing any blocking whatsoever. This play represents the change in attitude between halves by the Jets offensive players. As Alan Branch (97) closed in on Mariota, Kenbrell Thompkins breaks wide open across the middle of the field. MarMar got it off in time, allowing Thompkins to make the game's most important catch, against his former team. Too bad it didn't go into the scorebooks. The Patriots put together a drive that strongly resembled their previous one, working methodically down the field, across midfield, before the Jets could eventually get a stop on third down. And they did it once again by correctly predicting the play action from Kaaya. They blitzed on another third and short, but Kaaya saw it coming, and made time to get it off to Martellus Bennett in the flat. But, Darron Lee made a game saving open field tackle, driving the big tight end back, an impressive feat in its own right. Ryan Allen’s punt was even better this time. Punting from the 36 because the Patriots were going into the wind, he pinned the Jets at their own 4. Forte got one of his best gains of the day, five yards, to give the Jets some breathing room, and then Mariota hit V-Jax on a check down, when he was trying to find Amaro. So, we had ourselves a third down, and we hadn’t hit the two minute warning yet, so the Jets needed to do something, or else the Patriots would have a great chance to win it. With those fog horns blaring, and the crowd on their feet, Mariota found Williams on the outside, and another big gain brought the ball out past the 35 towards the 40. After a tough completion by Amaro, and a huge run by Forte, the Jets were in field goal range for their reliable kicker, and Belichick was burning timeouts hoping to get the ball back with a reasonable amount of time on the clock. The Jets, however, wanted a touchdown. On third down, the Patriots out of timeouts, Forte ran it right through the A gap, exactly where the Patriots were expecting him to go, but he broke free, and got inside the five to the 4 yard line. Trying to punch it in, Mariota gave it to him again, but he was stuffed. The clock was running, and was now below thirty seconds, so the Jets decided to try to center the position of the ball for a potential field goal from Folk. They turned to Forte to do that, but as soon as he was hit by Sheldon Richardson, the ball popped out, and Jabaal Sheard, of all people, fell on it. The Patriots wisely ran out the clock, and we were going to overtime, the second time in three weeks that the Jets found themselves in an extra session. The Patriots won the toss and took the ball first. Dayes kept working and working, and finally got some running room. The Patriots got down inside the Jets 25, mostly behind the legs of the newly signed rookie Dayes, and this time, they finally got some points. Gostkowski made a 40 yard field goal look easy, and it was 24-21 New England, with about half of the overtime period already gone. For a brief moment, RoundingThird thought about how funny it would be if the game ended in a tie. The key word here is brief. He didn’t spend much time on that thought, and then went right back to trying to win the game. And all it took was two plays. Forte ran for 8 yards, then Mariota found Amaro on a play fake, who shook a couple of tacklers, then took off. Malcolm Butler caught up to him at the 1 yard line, but it was too late. Amaro crossed the plane, and this came was over. The comeback was completed, and that final pass to Amaro had put Mariota at 548 passing yards for the game, just 6 yards shy of Norman Van Brocklin’s NFL record for a single game. Wow. The magic behind this team is real. And, next week, we’re getting Gronk back. That’s right, we just got even deadlier on the offensive side. Malcolm Butler caught up to Jace Amaro, but it was too late. His momentum only pushed Amaro into the end zone, and the Jets walked off with their most improbable win since Super Bowl III.

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)
What. A. Game.
This game had everything. Big second half comeback, Marcus Mariota throwing for 548 yards, even Jace Amaro scoring 4 touchdowns lmao. Huge win as it comes to securing the AFC East. However, if the Jets play like they did in the first half against the Chiefs, there won't be a comeback and I can assure you of that lol.

But yeah, it worked our, didn't it? As you mentioned, I'll get clobbered by KC if this happens again. I think I'll get clobbered anyway, but whatever. They're scary good. Their defense is better than ours, and they're 11-1 despite not having Alex Smith since like week 6. They got a rookie QB carrying the load. Who is it? We'll find out.
