Re: Now or Never - Oregon Ducks (NCAA 14)

Insider News and Notes

Just how much of running back Royce Freeman will we see against FCS opponent?

EUGENE, ORE -- There's no denying the significance of this win for the Ducks. In a game that was thought to be a changing of the guard, the Ducks went out and handled business against a very good team in a difficult environment. I don't think next week will prove to be much of a challenge as the Ducks welcome UC Davis to Autzen. We'll have a breakdown of the Aggies later this week, but as of now, here are some news and notes.

1. Left Tackle Tyrell Crosby is out for the season - We feared this news might be coming, and sources have confirmed that this is indeed the case. While the Ducks do not release injury news, the team is expected to make this official in the coming days. Crosby, an NFL prospect, had not seen the field thus far this season as he was dealing with a foot injury that he sustained in practice. Unfortunately, the lingering injury became serious enough that surgery is now required to repair it. Crosby will undergo surgery sometime this week and he will not return this season. What will be interesting to see is if he decides to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft, or if he wants to play for the Ducks next season.

2. Special Teams notes - There was marked improvement in both the kick coverage and return this week. If you recall last week's report, this was a point of emphasis during practice. The Ducks limited Nebraska to an average of 28 yards a return while Nelson averaged 42 yards a return for the Ducks including a long of 52. However, the punt return game may have regressed. Nelson returned both of the punts that he saw for an average of 0.5 yards. The coaches are considering a change, maybe Darren Carrington II or Tony Brooks-James, simply because Nelson does not seem to be able to get up-field on returns or read his blocks properly.

3. The emergence of cornerback Arrion Springs - Cornerback Arrion Springs, as of now, is the best player on the Duck's defense, and he is finally playing up to his potential. Coaches have questioned Springs' effort since he came to Eugene as a 4-star recruit, but word around the program is that he has been excelling in practice and thus far, this has translated into Saturdays. Last week, he gave up only one catch to star receiver Jordan Westerkamp for only five yards. If he can stay motivated, he has a chance to be selected very highly in the upcoming NFL draft.

4. How long will we see the starters vs. UC Davis? - UC Davis could give the Ducks more of a challenge than they expect. I fully believe that. With that being said, both I and the coaches know that by the start of the fourth quarter, this game will likely be out of hand. So, just how long will we see the number one offense and defense in this one? I don't expect to see much of Royce Freeman. He may play the first quarter, but after that, expect a lot of reserves Tony Brooks-James, Kani Benoit, and Taj Griffin. Prukop will probably play the first half.

Defensively, I expect the majority of starters to be out of the game by halftime. The Ducks have always used these types of games as an opportunity to give younger players in-game experience, and that's what we'll see on Saturday. We should get at least another full quarter of true freshman Justin Herbert at quarterback and a lot of looks for young stars such as true freshman receiver Dillon Mitchell.

Re: Now or Never - Oregon Ducks (NCAA 14)

WEEK TWO RECAP - AROUND THE NCAA

In what turned out to be a week of contenders separating from the pack, there were dozens of fanbases that were left looking for answers after Saturday. While some near the top of the polls handled their business (such as Alabama who won 49-10 over Georgia State or Ohio State who easily handled San Diego State 43-24), others struggled to live up to the hype. Here is a recap of some of the most intruging week 2 storylines.

Michigan outlasts Notre Dame under the lights 27-20

Michigan tailback De'Veon Smith ran for 161 yards in Michigan's week two victory over Notre Dame.

In a game dominated by the Wolverine's run defense (Notre Dame rushed for a paltry 35 yards), Michigan emerged victorious. While Notre Dame quarterback and NFL draft prospect Deshone Kizer did their best to score against the rugged Wolverine defense (Kizer threw for 423 yards and 2 touchdowns on the evening), it proved to be too little too late.

Michigan mounted a 27-13 lead late in the fourth quarter under the strength of their powerful tailback De'Veon Smith. Smith rushed for over 160 yards in the evening and he helped pace the often erradic play of quarterback Wilton Speight who struggled to complete just half of his passes. All in all, the Wolverines were able to hold on in the matchup of top 10 powerhouses and they have asserted themselves as a team to beat in the playoff race.

OU survives instant classic versus WVU 36-35

Oklahoma receiver Dede Westbrook catches the game winning touchdown pass with only 22 seconds left.

Trips to Morgantown are never easy. Oklahoma experienced this firsthand last week as they struggled mightily against Dana Holgorsen and the Mountaineers. Quarterback Skyler Howard performed admirably versus a soft Sooners pass defense as he tossed 3 scores and over 300 yards through the air.

Still, the sheer talent of Oklahoma, led by Heisman candidate Baker Mayfield, was enough for the Sooners to come out on top. Mayfield padded his numbers by passing for nearly 500 yards (494) and 3 scores. Receiver Dede Westbrook was on the receiving end of 8 of Mayfield's passes and he totaled 108 yards. The play of the game came in the fourth quarter with the Sooners trailing 35-29. With 22 seconds left, Mayfield found Westbrook in the endzone for the game winning touchdown in what turned out to be a one-point victory.

Mr. Heisman (Christian McCaffery) puts on a show versus San Jose State.

Stanford tailback Christian McCaffery accounted for over 250 yards of total offense and 5 touchdowns in Saturday's victory over San Jose State.

Stanford ended up in a closer-than-expected matchup against San Jose State this weekend, but nobody will be talking about the box score once they see what McCaffery's numbers turned out to be. The Colorado native did his best Herschel Walker impression as he rushed for 234 yards and 5 touchdowns! To add to his already impressive day, he added 5 catches for 35 yards. The guy is not human. There's no other way to put it. Just give him the Heisman already.

Tennessee throttles UW in game of the week 48-30

Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs pulled off his best Peyton Manning impression as he threw for over 500 yards and 3 touchdowns against a talented Washington secondary.

Many thought that this was the year that both Tennessee and Washington returned to their rightful place atop College Fotoball's Mount Rushmore. Tennessee may still get there, but it's clear that Washington still has a way to go. The Dawgs were outclassed as they traveled east to take on the Vols. Opening the game with a 31-3 lead, the result was never in question as Tennessee thoroughly dominated every aspect of the game. Washington quarterback Jake Browning did his best Jake Locker impression as he threw for over 400 yards, but it was the quarterback on the opposing team that really raised some eyebrows. (Even if he doesn't have any)

Tennesse star Joshua Dobbs had himself a game to remember. The senior passed for 533 yards and 3 touchdowns in the dominating victory and he firmly cemented himself in the Heisman race. Head coach Butch Jones called the performance "a treat to watch," which is probably understating it. Dobbs did have some help as three of his receivers, including tailback Jalen Hurd, had north of 100 receiving yards. Maybe this is the year that the Vol's offseason hype is finally warranted. We shall soon find out.

Re: Now or Never - Oregon Ducks (NCAA 14)

WEEK THREE PREVIEW: UC DAVIS

Not many people know about the Aggies of UC Davis. The Ducks hope to make sure that the Aggies remain in anonymity.

The Ducks are playing the Aggies this weekend. No, not Texas A&M. No, not New Mexico State. They are playing the University of California, Davis, better known as UC Davis. These Aggies get much less noteriety than their counterparts in New Mexico and College Station, and for good reason. UC Davis has struggled in the Big Sky conference these past few seasons and this year has been more of the same. Blowout losses to Eastern Washington and Southern Utah, two of the best teams in the conference, precede this week's matchup with the Ducks for the Aggies. To make matters worse, not even one UC Davis player was selected to the Preseason All-Big Sky team.

There is a very interesting storyline in this game, despite the fact that we're likely going to be seeing a blowout. Head Coach Ron Gould for the Aggies is an Oregon alum and he still remains in contact with the program. Maybe Helfrich will try and take it easy on the Oregonian...maybe not.

Offense

The Aggies offense is piloted by senior quarterback Ben Scott (6'3 203). Scott's 2015 season ended with an injury, but he has returned to win the starting job and has performed admirably thus far this season.

Scott is flanked by receiver Keelan Doss (6'3 206) who may very well be the team's best player. Doss has good size for the position and he has explosive capabilities. He has played well thus far this season and he is public enemy number one for the Ducks this weekend. If they take him and his talents lightly, they could be in for a surprising day.

Defense

Defensively, there are not many standouts to mention. In two games, they're giving up an average of 499.0 yards a game. However, one thing to note is just how aggressive and trigger-happy this defense is. They are known for their man-heavy scheme and jailbreak blitzes. It will be interesting to see if they tone down this strategy with such a potent offense opposite them or if they will crank up the heat in Autzen.

Prediction: 52-27 Ducks (-43)

I don't think the Ducks cover the spread, but I think they'll pull out the win. Don't be surprised if you see a little fatigue from the travel across time zones last week.

Re: Now or Never - Oregon Ducks (NCAA 14)

DUCKS FLY PAST THE AGGIES IN 51-17 WIN

It wasn't a perfect game, but the Ducks did what they had to do in a convincing win over UC Davis.

"Win the Day" is the motto that Chip Kelly used to re-brand the Oregon football program, and sometimes, winning the day is all that you can ask for. The Ducks did just that in a win against UC Davis this Saturday, but sometimes, winning the day is not enough. Especially when you're a national championship contender and perfection, or anything close to it, is desired.

"We didn't play our best game today, and it's clear that we have a lot to work on. Conference play is around the corner, and if we don't sure up some things, we'll be on the outside looking in come December," said coach Helfrich. From Helfrich's remarks, you'd think that the Ducks won on a last second field goal. Instead, the result was a convincing win over an overmatched opponent. While there are areas of concern for the 3-0 Ducks, the good news is that they successfully managed to go undefeated in non-conference play and the only thing that stands between them and the playoff is a rigorous PAC-12 slate.

On the their first three possessions, the Ducks' offense flexed their muscles as they accounted for three straight touchdowns.

The game started out strong for the Ducks. Right off the gate, Prukop led the Ducks down the field with an impressive array of dives, sweeps, and screen passes. The drive ended with a Prukop scramble into the end zone on third down. "I really liked how we ran the ball, but we got away from that as the game went on. We really need to stay committed to running the ball if we want to have a chance moving forward," said Helfrich.

The defense did their share as cornerback Ugo Amadi forced a fumble on the opening drive.

The defense then made their mark to start the game as well. On UC Davis' first drive, their quarterback scrambled past the first down line and right into the waiting arms of cornerback Ugo Amadi who forced a fumble. Safety Tyree Robinson recovered the fumble and the Ducks quickly turned the turnover into six points with another Prukop touchdown run; this time on a 22 yard run off of a read option. Another forced turnover, this time, an Arrion Springs interception, would once again complement the offense and the Ducks found themselves up 20-0. (The Ducks once again missed a two-point conversion.)

At this point, I'm sure Helfrich was most concerned about delegating playing time, but UC Davis had other ideas. On a day where Prukop played extremely well in stretches and bafflingly erradic in others, he made his first big mistake of the game as he waited a second to long to release a screen pass intended for receiver Darren Carrington II. A UC Davis cornerback stepped in front of the late throw and took it the distance. The score gave the Aggies life...life that was soon extinguished on the Ducks' first play of their next drive as Prukop went right back to Carrington II, this time on a play action pass, and he connected for a 73-yard touchdown. "The play really worked to perfection. The defenders bit pretty hard on the play-fake, and then Dakota hit Darren in stride. Onc ehe got in the open field, we knew nobody was catching him," said offensive coordinator Matt Lubick.

After Carrington's 73-yard touchdown reception, UC Davis knew that the game was over.

Although the Aggies continued to fight, it was at this point the game was over. Defensively, the Ducks had their share of struggles. They gave up 10 points (the other 7 points can be attributed to the pick six) and they let the Aggies stay on the field by converting numerous third down attempts. It wasn't a perfect day by any means, but they did force two turnovers and grab three sacks. All in all, they handled business and controlled the game for the most part.

Offensively, the Ducks never completely stuck to the running game as evidenced by the 41 attempted passes, but when they did run, they had tremendous success. Freeman only played sparingly during the game so as to preserve his legs. This led to the featuring of sophomore Tony Brooks-James who had a career game with over 100 yards and a touchdown. His efforts led the team in what turned out to be a very productive day on the ground. Through the air, Prukop made some big plays for both teams. He was generally accurate throughout the game, but a couple of bad decisions led to interceptions for the Aggies. Still, he accounted for five total touchdowns and at this point, he looks like he could be a difference maker down the stretch for the Ducks.

Sophomore running back Tony Brooks-James filled in for a resting Royce Freeman and put up a career-high 107 yards.

All in all, this was exactly what the Ducks needed. A drama-free victory over an FCS foe as they now look to travel to Los Angeles to take on USC. This game will be huge. The Ducks and Trojans are both teams that were unknown heading into the season, and that may still be the case. However, if the Ducks want to win the PAC-12, this is the type of game that they'll have to find a way to win. They'll be at a slight talent discrepancy, but that hasn't stopped them in the past. It should be a good one, and we'll have plenty of coverage on the matchup of PAC-12 heavyweights throughout the week.

Re: Now or Never - Oregon Ducks (NCAA 14)

Insider News and Notes

The Ducks got an easy victory this Saturday, but did it come at a cost?

EUGENE, ORE -- Not many good things can come from playing an FCS opponent as crazy as it sounds. In this era, if you don't blow out your opponent in these type of games, it's viewed as a disappointment despite the fact that many FCS teams are better than a lot of FBS teams. Also, there's the potential for injuries in what are usually blowout victories. The Ducks certainly did their part in winning soundly, but they may not have escaped the injury bug.

1. Injury notes - Two players left the game with injuries after the first quarter and neither one returned. The first was linebacker Troy Dye. Dye left the game with a hip injury and did not return, but I am told that the injury is not serious at all and had the game been more significant, he would have been able to return. He might be limited in practice on Monday, but expect him to be full strength come Saturday.

The other player who left the game in the first quarter was receiver Devon Allen. Allen caught a 10-yard screen pass and was dealt a pretty serious blow which left him face-down on the field for a few minutes. Thankfully, he walked off the field under his own power. However, we can confirm that he suffered a concussion on the play, and due to the NCAA's policy on player safety, he will not be cleared to practice or play until he has been without symptoms for three consecutive days. Long story short, it does not look likely that Allen will play this week against USC. The Ducks obviously want to ease Allen back into things, so expect him to at least miss this week.

2. NFL Draft Buzz - As far as Oregon's draft eligible players who are underclassmen, running back Royce Freeman is as close to a lock as there is to entering the draft following this season. This is not to say that Freeman is not a team player, on the contrary, he is one of the biggest leaders on the team despite being soft-spoken. However, he knows as well as everyone that a running back's shelf life is shorter than most other players and he needs to get to the NFL as soon as possible to capitalize on his growing stock. The coaches are in full support of his NFL journey and this will almost assuredly be his last season in Eugene.

Players that are on the fence, according to my sources, are receiver Darren Carrington II and cornerback Arrion Springs. Carrington II seems more likely to enter the draft as he had considered doing so last season, but he is not 100% certain as he wants to get into first round consideration. (As of now, many scouts have him as a day two prospect). Springs is an interesting case as he is gaining significant buzz in NFL circles, but this is his first real season of serious production. While he has intriguing physical traits, scouts want to see more consistency from him and it may affect whether he leaves this offseason or stays to better his stock.

Last, I'm told that left tackle Tyrell Crosby is leaning towards returning to Eugene. As you know, Crosby suffered a broken foot in fall camp and underwent surgery last week. He is out for this season, but it seems that his heart is in Eugene and he wants to have another chance to play for the Ducks before he goes pro.

3. Matt Lubick - Lubick, the offensive coordinator for the Ducks, is a rising name in the coaching industry right now. The former wide receivers coach is a young, creative mind who seems to be somewhat of a quarterback whisperer. Although he doesn't work directly with the quarterbacks in practice, he is very involved in meeting rooms with both coach Helfrich and quarterbacks coach David Yost. It may be premature, but there are plenty of teams that are considering Lubick as a legitimate head coaching candidate for next season. We'll see if this is just chatter or if it is legitimate when the time comes, but it would be interesting to see how the Ducks manage to handle the situation if they lose their second offensive coordinator in as many years to a head coaching job at another school.

Re: Now or Never - Oregon Ducks (NCAA 14)

WEEK THREE RECAP - AROUND THE NCAA

It was a relatively calm week for the major players in the college football landscape. The top 5 teams all remain undefeated, although Alabama was pushed to the brink against a pesky Texas A&M squad. We might be in the eye of the hurricane however, as next week there will be several high profile matchups including the much anticipated Tennessee-Florida game. Still, not every team was able to escape with a win this week. Here are the major storylines following Saturday's action.

Texas upsets Ole Miss 29-24

Running back D'onta Foreman paced the Longhorns' rushing attack with 129 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns.

Charlie Strong's Longhorns made a statement this weekend with a thrilling 29-24 victory over Ole Miss in Austin. The Longhorns have a talented roster, but just haven't been able to field a solid team over the past few years. However, this year's team looks motivated and aggressive. Led by a swarming defense which held the powerful Ole Miss offense to under 400 yards, the Longhorns look to be a player in the college football playoff landscape this season.

In addition to their nasty defense, the Longhorns got contributions from their young stars in tailback D'onta Foreman (129 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns) and freshman quarterback Shane Buchele (164 passing yards and 1 touchdown). The offense is under new leadership with former Baylor quarterback coach and Tulsa offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, and so far, his tutelage seems to be paying off.

Alabama fights off Texas A&M 31-24

Running back Bo Scarbrough saved the Tide's season as he scored with 10 seconds left in regulation.

In what proved to be the game of the week, the Crimson Tide survived a tricky road trip to College Station as they beat the Aggies 31-24 in walk-off fashion. The game featured a valiant effort from graduate transfer quarterback Trevor Knight as he tossed 325 yards and 3 touchdowns against a fierce Crimson Tide defense. However, Alabama shut down A&M's run game (92 yards on 27 carries), and this led to Knight having to carry far too heavy a load.

Alabama complemented another great effort by their defense by relying on their star offensive weapons. Tailback Bo Scarbrough rushed for over 120 yards and the game winning touchdown with only 10 seconds left. Meanwhile receiver Calvin Ridley had a game for the ages as he hauled in 6 catches for 106 yards. If that wasn't enough, he also added a punt return touchdown.

Lamar Jackson and Co. grounded in blowout loss to UK

Star quarterback Lamar Jackson was humbled in a shocking loss to Kentucky.

In a matchup between two basketball powerhouses, the Kentucky football team easily disposed of Louisville and their talented signal caller. Quarterback Lamar Jackson had entered the game as the leading passer in the country, but he left the game with an injury after throwing for less than 200 yards and 2 scores. The Cardinals could not get anything going against what is proving to be a very talented Kentucky defense. The Wildcats took two turnovers to the house and nearly outscored Louisville on their own.

Meanwhile, Kentucky relied on a solid, if unspectacular performance from their offense to complete the upset. Quarterback Drew Barker had a completion percentage of only 44% but he protected the football and threw two touchdowns. He was paced by running back Boom Boom Williams who continued his already productive season with 130 yards rushing and a touchdown. Kentucky is now a dark-horse contender for the SEC East crown after they have upset top 25 opponents (UNC in week 2 and Louisville in week 3) in consecutive weeks.

Kaaya and Watson have a quarterback duel for the ages

Quarterback Deshaun Watson adds to his legend with a dominating performance in a classic shootout.

In a game that saw a pick six and a kickoff returned for a touchdown, things got crazy in Death Valley as Watson and the Tigers pulled off a 59-45 shootout victory over the Hurricanes. Watson added to his Heisman candidacy with a prolific performance. He was 30-39 passing with 464 yards and 3 touchdowns. He aided his team in totaling over 600 yards of offense on the day in what turned out to be a thrilling victory.

Quarterback prospect Brad Kaaya did his best to match his counterpart as he connected on 31 of his 40 passes for 432 yards and 3 touchdowns. However, he threw two interceptions, one of which proved to be extremely costly as Adrian Baker returned it to the house. New Canes' head coach Mark Richt might not be too angry with his quarterback after this one, but he'll certainly have some choice words for his defense.
