UNC WILMINGTON GEARS UP FOR INAUGURAL SEASON



WILMINGTON, NC -- The University of North Carolina at Wilmington's announcement that they will be adding a football team to their athletic program for the 2016/17 school year has many in Wilmington and around the country intrigued.

"It's a big step for the school as a whole," remarked head coach Ryan Hoy at the team’s first annual “Meet the Seahawks” press conference.

“Obviously this is going to be a bit of a process,” Hoy continued with a hoard of local reporters around him. “These guys have been practicing hard and can’t wait to represent not only this university, but the Wilmington area as a whole. We can’t expect to go out and win every game off the rip, but we’re planning on competing at a high level every week. I know the guys are excited for September 1st and want to show you guys what we can do. It’s a fun time right now.”

The Seahawks will compete as an independent team for the 2016/17 campaign before transitioning into C-USA for the 2017/18 season.

The Seahawks also signed a 4 year deal with UNC to play a game in Chapel Hill every season until 2019/20.

The Seahawks open up the 2016 season at home vs. an FCS team before heading the Chapel Hill for their second game of the year.

“I’m excited. Something special is going to happen in Wilmington.”

UNCW 2016 ROSTER ANNOUNCED



WILMINGTON, NC – Today the UNC Wilmington Seahawks provided us with our first look at the 2016 roster. The roster is headlined by JR HB Joshua Roberson, a name that will be household for Seahawk fans by years end.

“I’m just ready to finally get out there and compete,” Roberson told the media. “It’s been a long time coming.”

The Seahawks still have a variety of questions about their depth chart, including at the most important position – quarterback. All three quarterbacks on the roster are underclassmen so the decision could impact the program for years to come.

When asked about the quarterback situation, Hoy was very blunt:

“It could be anyone. Just like it could be anyone at any position. I’ve told these guys – they know the deal. This is our first year taking the field. The depth chart is going to be moving around a lot. We’re gonna get a feel for what kind of team we want to be. We’re going to find out identity. We’ll go one from there.”

The Seahawks open the season at home vs FCS East next week.

COACH HOY ANNOUNCES DEPTH CHART

WILMINGTON, NC - Just 24 hours ahead of UNCW's first ever football game, Coach Hoy released the depth chart to the media for the first time.

"I want to stress that this is an extremely fluid depth chart," Hoy said to STAR news. "Week in and week out, we're going to have to make a decision about who wants to play on this football team."

At the game's most important position, QB Shannon Rush gets the nod for Saturday.

There's a lot of unknown names on the depth chart for UNCW, but coach Hoy is confident that the team will be able to compete right away. The Seahawks open up the season in Fisher Stadium Saturday at 3PM. Tickets are on sale for as low as $10 and can be purchased from the UNCW website.

"We're planning on going out and winning some ball games -- that starts tomorrow. Davidson will be a good in state test. It's exciting, but this is only step one."

One of the more frustrating games I've played on NCAA 14. This is going to be an extremely long season. Shannon Rush couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, and when he did it was a drop 50% of the time. Really, really ugly offense.

Losing my start HB for the season is fantastic too.

Next week should be lots of fun.
