A wise man did once say .. R-E-L-A-X... hopefully the Cowboys find that advice well!
I know the offensive is what has been lacking so far, but I feel like the defense is still the issue. In fact, I have more confidence in the offense than the defense. I'm trying to adjust the playbook, schemes, and formations on offense, because something just isn't clicking with what we have going on right now. I want this to get honed it, because right now, the team reminds me of UConn, since they're fresh in my mind from the game earlier today. They can score all day long, but they can't get a stop on D. We'll get there on offense, and then it will be enough to win games.

Re: We Dem Boyz: Bringing Big O Back to the Big D (M18)

Gameday Preview: Week 4

Okay, Big D, we're back home! That's just what the doctor ordered. Let's get back on track.

Hit the reset button, because we're back home. We just need to relax, and go play football. As long as we can punch the ball into the end zone, instead of settling for field goals or turning the ball over, we'll be just fine. We've had the opportunities, we just need to execute. But other than that, we're right where we want to be.

So, here come the Rammies, and somebody that Coach Freday knows too well. T-Gurls, or Todd Gurley II, comes into AT&T Stadium as the league's leading rusher through three weeks, looking to have beaten the horrific sophomore slump he experienced last year. The Rams, just like the Cowboys, are an obvious run first team, so the fact that Gurley has been able to run the ball so well implies that the offense is flowing, and the pressure has been taken off 2016 #1 overall pick Jared Goff. But, he can still beat you over the top if you let him, and the trade made for Sammy Watkins just before the start of the season gives him two speed threats, as Watkins joins Tavon Austin out wide. The Rams also boast another ex-Buffalo Bill in Robert Woods, and rookie Cooper Kupp from Eastern Washington, whom Sean McVay and his staff are so incredibly high on. Speaking of rookies that are valued greatly by their coaching staff, tight end Gerald Everett continues to impress this season, after Dennis Pitta suffered a broken hip during training camp. Yep, after a pathetic offense last year, the Rams are really stepping up their game.

For Los Angeles, defense has always been the name of the game, even during the darkest of days (the Sam Bradford era). Aaron Donald is done with his holdout, and ready to go back to being the rock of this unit, driving offensive linemen everywhere crazy. He is joined up front by Michael Brockers, Ethan Westbrooks, and Letroy Guion. The most stand out name you'll find at linebacker is Mark Barron, because of his new role as linebacker, being converted from safety over the offseason. But, the Rams went out and signed Connor Barwin, because in two years' time, who isn't going to want to come play in Los Angeles with the new stadium they have opening up? Anyway, Barwin and Barron join steady-hands Robert Quinn and Alec Ogletree to form a pretty solid linebacker group, perhaps the best the Cowboys have faced all month (because it's October 1, get it?). Bad puns aside, the Rams secondary contains the NFL leader in interceptions in the early going. That man is Kayvon Webster, the Cowboys are likely to give him a couple of chances to add to his total, the way they've been playing. But, it's not a one main unit. Trumaine Johnson and Nickell Robey-Coleman are the corners that want to swipe one away from Dak Prescott today. Additionally, former Florida State standout LaMarcus Joyner and Maurice Alexander will be patrolling left center and right center field. The Rams probably have one of the best special teams duos in the league, and we think it's worth mentioning. Kicker Greg Zuerlein, better known as Legatron, needs no introduction, and you can count on punter Johnny Hekker being a Pro Bowler every year.

Game Recap: Cowboys 33, Rams 5
Cowboys' offense wakes up in 4th quarter, defense sacks Goff 10 times

Sean Lee may very well be Superman. The Cowboys defensive captain opened this game up, and put it out of reach, by taking this Jared Goff pass all the way back to the house, and doing so emphatically.

How 'bout dem Cowboys????? Now that's more like it. That's the offense we've been waiting to see. But, it took three quarters for it to happen, and we only have the defense to thank for keeping us in the game, as they pitched a shutout after the first drive, shutting down Todd Gurley and sacking Jared Goff 10 times! (yes, 10). But, yet, through three quarters, the Cowboys hung on to a 9-3 lead, three Dan Bailey field goals providing the only scoring.

We already talked about the game's first drive, the only time all day the LA offense put points on the board. How did the Cowboys respond? Not well. A quick three and out, and punt, and Coach Freday thought we were heading down the same path that they've been on for much of the first three games. On a 2nd and long, however, Jared Goff got greedy and threw it deep. Byron Jones undercut the route perfectly, and Mr. UConn had a nice interception, adding a long return to the onset of field goal range. The Cowboys offense couldn't do anything, and after taking a sack on second down, but getting the yards back on third down, Dan Bailey came on and made a 56 yard field goal by the skin of his teeth, and it was 3-3 despite no offensive production from Dallas.

As the Cowboys started to force the Rams to punt, a common theme, Coach Freday figured out what to do with his offense. At the start of the second quarter, the Cowboys found some success running run pass options (RPOs), with Dak moving out of the pocket before deciding whether to get rid of it and run. He saw a lot of success running the ball, much more than Zeke could find, at least until the second half, but we'll get to that. But what happened? The Rams finally brought a spy, and Dak was forced to throw. In fact, it was a series of two bad throws, right to defenders, on two consecutive drives that really showed why this offense has been stuck in the mud. But, it wasn't like the Rams were doing anything, so it remained 3-3, until the Cowboys finally got into the red zone inside the two minute warning. But, piss poor playcalling, and a third down sack led to another field goal to make it 6-3, which held until halftime.

To open up the second half, the Cowboys had one of their better looking drives of the season. It was sustained, taking up a lot of clock. Dak didn't force it in when he didn't have to, using his legs, and Zeke slowly got it going (with a couple setbacks mixed in). Upon reaching the red zone, Dak made a beautiful throw to Dez Bryant on the sideline, after looking off his first two desired targets. Dez caught it as his feet cross the goal line, but it didn't appear as if the ball ever crossed the goal line in bounds, so in the mind of Coach Freday, it wasn't worth challenging. Plus, Bossman upstairs would probably get mad at him anyway. Despite having 1st and goal at the 1, the Rams stuffed the run, and one pass, and the Cowboys frustratingly added on another field goal. 9-3 Dallas.

Skipping ahead a little bit now to the 4th quarter, the Cowboys found themselves in the red zone again, not in the mood to tolerate another field goal. After a 1st down run from Zeke got them in position, a first in its own right, Dak dropped back with five wide, instantly picked up the middle linebacker blitz, and knew that Brice Butler would come off his break wide open. He was so open, he had to wrap his hands around the ball after he caught it to make sure he didn't drop it. TOUCHDOWN COWBOYS!!!!!! FINALLY!!! Up 12 early in the 4th, Coach Freday told his offense to stay out there, because, well, the Rams could still comeback, even though the defense had been playing so well. What did Dak do? Run it in from two yards out to make it 17-3. Fitting.

That's when the Rams lost control of the ball game. After getting a couple first downs, Jared Goff heard footsteps, since you know, the Cowboys had so many friggin' sacks, and threw it to Tavon Austin in triple coverage. Sean Lee was there, and had an easy pick six. To steal a line from Antonio Brown, business was boomin', and it was now 24-3 Cowboys. The Rams embarked on one of those cheese drives, as Coach Freday likes to call them, where everything you've been doing all game on defense suddenly doesn't work anymore. The Rams got inside the red zone before Goff hit Byron Jones hit the end zone for his second reception of the day. Oh wait, Byron is on our team. Another pick for the Cowboys defense (they weren't done), and a touchback on this one, with just over 3 minutes to play.

After Jared Goff forced another pass into a very not wide open Tavon Austin, Rams head coach Sean McBae wondered if something was wrong with him. 2 picks for the UConn man!!! thesportsguru11 taught him well!

So, at this point, all the Cowboys had to do was run out the clock, but they wanted to enjoy this one, because it had been quite awhile. So, the next drive featured a steady diet of Zeke, with what was basically a no huddle in between. The problem was, Zeke was averaging 3 yards a carry, so Dak had to throw it every now and again. But then, all of a sudden, and virtually out of nowhere, Zeke did what he does best, bursting through a big hole, and outrunning everybody in sight. 52 yards later, the Cowboys had a garbage time touchdown, but the good kind, and not the one they got last week, on the wrong side of the blowout in Arizona. But then, almost as if it was karma, the Rams blocked the extra point attempt, and took it back to the house for a safety, making the score 30-5. Lesson learned.

There he goes! Zeke (21) zooms past Nickell Robey-Coleman (23) and Maurice Alexander (31), the last two men he had to beat to score with less than a minute left in a blowout.

The real GOAT, Michael Jordan (ok, not that one), comes in to block this extra point attempt that Isaiah Johnson would go on to scoop up to give his team a safety.

But, like I said earlier, the Cowboys weren't done interception Jared Goff. Just throwing it up now, he hit Anthony Brown, who returned it right into field goal range. Dan Bailey hit a 47 yarder, but after the Rams had a frustration foul, roughing the kicker, Bailey came back out and hit a 32 yarder as time expired, finally putting the Rams out of their misery, in what is sure to be the first 33-5 final score in the history of the league.

Re: We Dem Boyz: Bringing Big O Back to the Big D (M18)

Gameday Preview: Week 5

After last week's resounding offensive performance, the Cowboys welcome their biggest challenge to date in 2017: The 4-0 Green Bay Packers

Well, Cheesehead Nation has had no need to R-E-L-A-X, Relax this season because Aaron Rodgers has gotten his Packers off to a 4-0 start, despite a number of key injuries on the offensive side of the football. Coming into the Big D today, he'll be without one of his favorite targets, Randall Cobb, as well as his starting running back, Ty Montgomery. What has Green Bay been doing right? Well, they are the NFL's top scoring offense, getting away with average to mediocre defense. Can the Cowboys #1 ranked defense slow them down, or are we in for a high scoring ballgame?

So, who will be on the field for the Packers offense today? Well, at running back will be rookie Jamaal Williams out of Brigham Young, but it is also worth noting that Green Bay is one of the few teams to still regularly require the use of their fullback, so look for Aaron Ripkowski to get some touches in both the passing game and running game. Meanwhile, Rodgers might not have Cobb, but he still has Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams, two guys he loves throwing to, as well as the budding relationship with his new tight end, Martellus Bennett. When this offense is clicking, which it has for the first quarter of this season, they're one of the best in the NFL. But, they are prone to breaking down, so we'll see how that fierce Cowboys defense comes after them.

The Packers haven't always been known for their defense, but so far in 2017, they're holding their own, at least when you consider their personnel, and the fact that they have a couple of noticeable weak spots. First, there's the cornerback position. Damarious Randall, Quinton Rollins, and Davon House will try to get the job done against a Cowboys team that doesn't necessarily rely on their wide outs, but rather their slot receivers, when they do actually throw the ball. Second, the linebackers are a weak point for the Packers, except for Clay Matthews, of course. Nick Perry and Jake Ryan have been struggling to make an impact in games. Obviously, they've gotten away with it, since the team is off to a 4-0 start, and going against this Cowboys offense that is still a work in progress, who knows what their role will be. Up front for Green Bay are Mike Daniels, Ricky Jean Francois, and rookie Montravius Adams from Auburn. Finally, in the secondary, playing centerfield along side those shaky corners are Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Morgan Burnett, two of the league's better safeties. Finally, it's worth noting that the Pack carry with them a rookie punter, Justin Vogel to go alongside their veteran and long time kicker, Mason Crosby.

Game Recap: Cowboys 31, Packers 7
Cowboys pull away in 4th after Packers turn the ball over, but Zeke lost for 2 months

Cole Beasley took this pass from Dak Prescott on third and long, then used his speed to take over, and went 52 yards for the score, which at that point, tied the game at 7.

Alright. I did not see that result coming. I REALLY didn't see that result coming after Zeke went down in the 1st quarter with what turned out to be a ruptured disk in his lower back. I REALLY REALLY didn't see that result when Dez Bryant sprained his ankle in the second quarter. Dez will be fine, Zeke will be miss somewhere around five games. But still, heading into the bye outscoring your opponents 64-12 in the two weeks before? Not too shabby. But, this game was definitely closer than the score indicates.

On the game's first play, DeMarcus Lawrence plowed through the left side of the Packers' offensive line and delivered a blind side sack on Aaron Rodgers, his league-leading 10th sack of the season. He finished with two more, giving him 12 on the season. His teammate, David Irving, is right on his tail, and the two have quite the lead over the rest of the pack in the NFL. But, let's get back to the game. The 1st quarter was a defensive battle. Both teams were figuring each other out. The Packers, on that first drive, had to punt right away. The Cowboys threw an interception, but it was about as good as a punt, because Dak rolled out of the pocket and still couldn't find anybody, so he chucked one up deep to Terrance Williams. The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie, but the Packers were moving behind the legs of Jamaal Williams, the biggest surprise of the afternoon, other than the final score.

The second quarter began with Green Bay finding themselves inside the Dallas 25, relying on the run to get them that far. 5 plays later, on a third and goal at the 2 after a sack on first down, then a long run by Williams on second, Rodgers had one of his trademark plays, scrambling around, dodging potential sacks, directing traffic for his receivers, before launching a missile into the chest of Davante Adams. Despite getting walloped right in the sternum and being flipped over, Adams held on to open the scoring, and it was 7-0 Green Bay. But, the Cowboys were quick to respond. After getting at least into striking distance of field goal range, Prescott took a sack, resulting in a third and long. At this point, Zeke has already gone down with his back injury, and for the first few drives after that, the Cowboys really didn't know what to do. Initially, Alfred Morris was getting stuffed, until the Cowboys could alter their run schemes to fit his style. So, they had to rely on Dak's arm for awhile, and he came through. On 3rd and 17 from their own 48, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan called play action, a risky move. But, upon getting to the line of scrimmage, Dak recognized the defensive formation, and knew that he'd have Cole Beasley wide open for a brief window amid the Packers' zone coverage. He guessed right, got it into Beasley, and Beasley just broke away from everybody, taking it 52 yards without being touched. That would become a theme on the afternoon. Cowboys players not being touched en route to scoring.

Davante Adams opens the scoring this afternoon after taking a big hit from Jeff Heath.

The rest of the half got interesting. Green Bay got a couple first downs, but then had to punt, and the Cowboys wanted to get a score before the break, knowing they would get the ball first in the second half. They got across midfield but couldn't quite maintain the drive, so Chris Jones came on to punt. The Packers were content going into the locker room, playing it safe with just over two minutes left, and the Cowboys didn't try to stop them from running down the clock, wanting to play it safe themselves. The Cowboys got the ball back at their own 25 with 30 seconds left in the half. But, after an 8 yard run from Morris, and a big gain by Morris off a screen, the Cowboys needed 10 yards to get into Dan Bailey's field goal range. But, trying to find Witten downfield, Dak misfired a touch, and it was intercepted, giving the Packers the ball at midfield with 3 seconds left. We all know Rodgers is the Hail Mary King, but on this day, his attempt was picked off. It was a 7-7 tie at halftime.

The Cowboys defense was playing too well for this to be a tie game, so you could understand Coach Freday's frustration when Dak threw his last interception of the day inside the red zone on the first drive of the second hald. Like we said, the Cowboys were relying on Dak's arm a little more than normal, and every so often, he had been trying to force one into tight coverage, thinking that it was up to him to win the game. But, that stingy Dallas defense held, and another Packers punt, give the Cowboys the ball at their own 23. The first down play call was about as basic as you can get: A dive right up the middle. But, right as Dak handed the ball off to Alfred Morris, it was as if we were watching the Red Sea part in front of our eyes. Morris had a HUGE hole, and outran everybody, going 73 yards without being touched, giving the Cowboys a 14-7 advantage.

Look at that hole that opened up for Alfred Morris. The Packers were in press coverage, and blitzing, so with no safety help, all Morris had to do was get the ball and run.

The Packers embarked on one of those pesky drives that I can't stand. Struggling to slow down Jamaal Williams before this drive, the Cowboys found a way to, but only on 1st and 2nd down. They couldn't break though and get to Rodgers, either, so the Packers slowly picked their way downfield until they were in field goal range looking for a touchdown. On 3rd and long, not able to run the ball this time, being a passing situation, Rodgers threw a strike right off the right hand of Martellus Bennett, and straight into the air. Jeff Heath picked it off on the tip drill, bringing the 3rd quarter to a close.

Jeff Heath reaches out to grab the interception, as you can see the frustration of Martellus Bennett (80), knowing he should have caught that to tie up the game.

The problem with the Jeff Heath interception was that he brought it out of the end zone, thinking he had room to run. He was brought down at the 3 yard line, so that didn't go over well with Coach Freday. But, it didn't matter, because the Cowboys launched a 15 play, 97 yard drive from that very spot, lasting almost 8 minutes and virtually putting the game on ice. The defining moment came in the red zone, on a third and 7 from the 8 yard line. Prescott was forced to scramble out of the pocket, then run, and he ran in to Clay Matthews 3 yards short of the first down, but he scratched and clawed his way through the tackle, then dove head first to get the first down. Alfred Morris continued the high octane effort by diving into the end zone on the next play, making it 21-7 Dallas with 4:28 to play. That's when the wheels fell off for the Packers.

Desperately trying to come back, Rodgers led his troops quickly to the midfield area, before taking back-to-back sacks from the tag team of Lawrence and Irving. On third down, hurried once again, he threw it up for grabs, into the hands of Arthur Brown. By time he was tackled, the Cowboys were in field goal range. I don't care how much you lead by in the NFL, if you are given free points, you take them. The Packers burned their last three timeouts as the Cowboys came inches short of a first down that would have iced it. Dan Bailey came out for a field goal, because that would've made it a three score game, as opposed to only a two score game if the Cowboys had gone for it and been stopped. He drained it, and it was 24-7. Just trying to pad the stats now, with just over a minute left, Rodgers hit Geronimo Allison in the flat, but the hit from Anthony Hitchens was a huge one, and young Allison coughed up the ball right away. Byron Jones was right there, and scooped it up, taking it to the 4 before Rodgers made a touchdown saving tackle. Once again, if given free points in the NFL, you take them. Morris took it in untouched for his third score of the day, and this ball game was now over, despite being a really close game.

So, the bye week is next, which should allow Dez Bryant to get back to 100%. Zeke, meanwhile, will miss some time, so it was very encouraging to see Alfred Morris step in so nicely. We're over .500 for the first time, and the offense is finally starting to click. Can we keep it going?
