BIRMINGHAM -
While UAB was able to jump out to a 14-2 first quarter lead, it wasn't enough as the Tigers clawed and fought their way to a rivalry win. The Blazers took a 17-15 lead into the 4th quarter mainly thanks to the arm of
Freshman QB Tyler Johnston who finished with 296 yards and a score and showed some chemistry with
Junior WR Xavier Ubosi. Even in the 4th quarter the Blazers had a chance to seal the game by taking a 27-23 lead with only 1:15 left on the clock. With almost half the amount of time of a two minute drill left,
Senior QB Riley Ferguson a community college transfer from
Coffeyville Community College put on his finest Aaron Rodgers imitation. Ferguson was able to lead his team into the red zone in less than a minute which set up a four yard touchdown run by the Tigers quarterback. While Freshman Tyler Johnston was a bright-spot for the Blazers they lacked production in the run department from
Junior James Noble III, who finished with only 72 yards.
Senior Linebacker Shaq Jones held it down on defense finishing with 8 tackles and 2 sacks.
The Blazers suffer their first loss of the season on the road in Memphis to fall to
2-1. Things don't get much brighter next week as your
Green & Gold travel to
Tuscaloosa for a road game against the
#6 Alabama Crimson Tide (1-1).
