Re: Restoring The Star: A Dallas Cowboys Franchise
"Dallas 2020: Depends on Dak?" "The Cowboys Opened Training Camp For The 2020 Season Last Friday" Another year and another football season is upon us. As always, the Dallas Cowboys find themselves as one of the most talked about teams in the league during these early stages of the long football calendar. The storylines revolving around the team are quite numerous but the main one has to center around the development of Dak Prescott. The fourth round product of Mississippi State seemed like a revolution in his rookie season, taking over for the oft injured in the last few years of his career Tony Romo and hasn't looked back since. However, many will claim that rookie season was Prescott's peak; that he's plateaued since then. Despite many statistics to back up his worth, the questions still remain on just how talented Dak truly is and how far he can take the Cowboys as QB1 of America's Team. With the Jones family making the ultimate decision to firmly entrench Prescott as the face of the franchise by paying him $30 million dollars per year with his shiny new contract this Offseason, the pressure on Prescott is more dense and weighty than ever. Of course, Prescott has never doubted himself, saying in an opening day statement that "[the new contract] doesn't mean much now - doesn't change having to come to the field or the film room ever day and putting in the work that needs to be done. I love the responsibility that comes with being the QB in Dallas, wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world." Other major storylines coming into the 2020 season include: New Face, New Fire: It was unsurprising that Jason Garrett was shown the door once and for all after an 8-8 campaign a year ago. However it was surprising that Kris Richard was ultimately given the reigns as the next Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys, especially given how un-spectacular his defensive unit played in spurts last year. However, the fire Richard has for pushing his team to the next level is evident in spades only three days into Training Camp. It's not an unusual sequence to witness Richard racing players up and down the sidelines or fighting with Defensive Backs to make a catch in the middle of the field. The Fall of the Great Wall of Dallas?: Once seen as undoubtedly the best Offensive Line in football, Dallas' O-Line appeared to be a shell of its former self at points in 2019. Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, La'el Collins and Travis Frederick all missed multiple games last year. Dallas made a point to re-stock the O-Line in the NFL Draft in the form of rookies Darrin Paulo and John Simpson. If the O-Line wilts yet again, could we be on the precipice of some new fixtures attempting to protect Dak and open lanes for Zeke? Putting The D in Big D?: In 2018 Dallas' defense looked poised to take the next step to becoming an elite unit. Lead by the Hot Boyz on the Defensive Line, the remarkable play of young LB duo Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch and a sturdy secondary, the sky was the limit for the Dallas defense. Turns out the sky was only a mirage in 2019 as the defense was gashed repeatedly in the rushing game, the Linebackers looked young and lost and the secondary showed cracks that turned into full blown ruptures at times. Will Richard be able to put the defense back on track or will Dallas' defense once again pale in comparison to the Offensive side of the ball? Kicking The Tires: Brett Maher's time in Dallas was as hot and cold as a malfunctioning faucet. A tremendous leg, Maher made multiple 60+ yard Field Goals while in Dallas. However, once closer to the uprights Maher struggled, costing Dallas a few victories by missing 'makeable' Field Goals. Holding an open kick try out during the Offseason, Dallas is hopeful it will have find an answer at Kicker in the form of 25 year old rookie Cole Tracey from LSU. Tracey went Undrafted in 2019 and was not signed into the NFL before being signed to the re-ignited XFL league. Tracey impressed Dallas enough to win the opportunity. Coming out of college many pro scouts questioned Tracey's ability to kick any substantially long Field Goals as his kicking arc is undeniably low; he also struggles with Kick Off duties. That said once in range Tracey is unquestionably a more accurate kicker than Maher was.

Re: Restoring The Star: A Dallas Cowboys Franchise
"Cowboys Lose Most Battles This Preseason, Survive The War" "Nick Fitzgerald Will Enter The 2020 Season As QB2" Only notching one win in the Preason of the 2020 season won't have many Cowboys fans excited for the team to take the field in Week 1. However, not suffering any major injuries and getting most starters tuned for the regular season should have them gleeful for the start of the Regular Season. The Cowboys only Preseason win came in the last as the back up Cowboys won the race against the Arizona Cardinals' backups in a shootout, 45-27. The fact that the Cowboys looked stagnant in their 'dress rehearsal' game against the Jets (Dallas headed into half time down 10-0 before most starters were pulled). Some of the major storylines to evolve throughout the Preseason included the following: Mississippi State QB Room: In a three man race sprint to decide the backup to Dak Prescott, fellow Mississippi State alum Nick Fitzgerald seems to have won the medal against Clayton Thorson and rookie D'Eriq King, though none of the parties looked stellar in any light. Fitzgerald finished with a 52% completion rating, 2 Touchdowns and 2 Interceptions while Thorson finished with a 49% completion rating, 0 Touchdowns and 3 Interceptions. D'Eriq King presented a lot of flash as an undrafted rookie with supreme athleticism but the game seemed to dwarf him and his athleticism was stymied versus NFL caliber talent. Jason Witten, All-Pro... Backup?: It's no shock the Cowboys treat their third Preseason game as a practice run for the regular season. If that's the case and reports out of practice are true, it appears as if All-Pro veteran TE Jason Witten is no longer the starting TE for the Dallas Cowboys. Instead it will be the versatile, athletic youngster Blake Jarwin who will be expected to re-ignite the TE flame - though Witten will obviously play a role in two TE sets. Future Of The Line: It's hard to judge players during the Preseason due to the sometimes lacking opposition. However, the young backups on Dallas' Offensive Line showed a ton of potential throughout the four exhibition games. Darrin Paulo started all four games for veteran Tyron Smith and more than held his own against starting DEs in every game. John Simpson looked like a wrecking ball at times at Guard. Even less flashy players Connor McGovern, G, and Brandon Knight, T, put together a bunch of solid game tape. There is definitely potential simmering within the group of back ups in the Great Wall of Dallas. Rotation At DE?: Though Dallas would love to have a second War Daddy at DE opposite DeMarcus Lawrence, it seems as if they'll have to settle for throwing more than one body at the position. Though not totally confirmed, the plan seems to be for rookie Joe Gaziano to play in base defensive sets against planned rushing plays while Dorance Armstrong will come in during more obvious passing downs. Armstrong has shown flashes before while the team is very high on Gaziano so it may be interesting to see if one player can excel enough to steal snaps from the other as the season wears on.

Re: Restoring The Star: A Dallas Cowboys Franchise
"Chiefs Retain No. 1 Spot In 2020 Power Rankings, Cowboys Lowest In Years" It should come as no shock that the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs take home the No. 1 in Week 1 of the NFL Power Rankings. The Chiefs return all their explosive offensive weaponry and stingy defense under tenured Head Coach Andy Reid. Runner up in the Super Bowl earns the Chicago Bears the No. 4 spot while the New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks round out the Top 5. Aaron Rodgers, some would say, is (unfairly) the sole reason the Green Bay Packers begin the season at No. 6 while more rounded whole teams such as the Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers are below them. Teams like the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans fill spots in the teen numbers and look good on paper but have a lot to prove during the regular season. The Dallas Cowboys come into the season at what has to be their lowest ranking in recent memory at 25 (third in their division on the list and behind teams such as the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals). Simply put the Cowboys have a lot of question marks on their roster and many in the media have criticized Jerry Jones for promoting Kris Richard when his defense failed to rise to the occasion in 2019; it also became publicly known this week that Jerry had negotiations with Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley that abruptly blew up when Jerry refused to give up his title as GM to someone else. Unsurprisingly the Dolphins land in the last spot in the rankings, despite a talent full of youth and potential; they haven't shown any of it yet.

Re: Restoring The Star: A Dallas Cowboys Franchise
"Cowboys Clutch In Cleveland" "LB Jaylon Smith Snatches The Game Sealing INT
There were questions about Dak Prescott. There were questions about the Defense. There were questions about new Head Coach Kris Richard. The Dallas Cowboys may not have shown all the answers but they did open the 2020 season with a tremendous win against the Cleveland Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium to move to 1-0 on the young season. It was a tough fought match up in Cleveland that had all the excitement, pomp and circumstance Week 1 in the National Football League usually has on display. The Browns received the Opening Kickoff and would gain some steam to start the game, with Baker Mayfield guiding his team into Dallas territory, overcoming an early 3rd & Long with a 14 yard gain to Odell Beckham Jr. However, rookie DE Joe Gaziano halted the Browns momentum with a sack on First Down that disrupted the opposition and led to the Browns punting their first possession away. Dallas took their opening possession on their own 12 yard line and slowly but surely worked down the field, eating up most of the rest of the first quarter. QB Dak Prescott found WRs Amari Cooper, Jalen Reagor and TE Blake Jarwin for gains of at least 10 yards during the drive while RB Ezekiel Elliott ran tough and rough over the Browns' stiff run defense, eventually capping the drive off with a two yard plunge into the Endzone to give Dallas the early 6-0 lead (rookie Kicker Cole Tracey missed the Extra Point). In Quarter 2, a 30 yard scamper by Browns RB Nick Chubb set Cleveland up in prime position in the redzone, which Mayfield took full advantage of by finding WR Henry Ruggs III open in the Endzone on a designed pick play to take the 1 point lead, 7-6. Dallas responded right back on its second possession of the game, marching down the field as Prescott had two scrambles and completions of 19 and 17 Yards, even overcoming a huge 13 yard sack by Sheldon Rankins for an eventual 13 Yard TD to Jarwin to re-take the lead 13-7. Throughout the rest of the second quarter, Dallas and Cleveland would trade the ball back and forth with both defenses standing up and disallowing either side to gain offensive traction going into Half Time. Browns DE Myles Garrett was a force the entire game but showed up big in Q2 with two sacks on one drive alone. After Half Time, the Cowboys looked to exert their will on the Browns as they received the second half Kick Off and they appeared to do so as they sliced and diced through the Browns' defense with RBs Tony Pollard and D'Onta Foreman giving Zeke an extended rest. However, the promising drive fizzled in the Red Zone after two sacks (one again by Garrett) led to a short Tracey field goal to move Dallas up three points, 16-7. Dallas would show off a little of it's own sack party starting in Q3 as DE DeMarcus Lawrence got into the action, taking down Mayfield on their first drive of the second half. The Dallas defense would stall the Browns and get the ball back for their Offense, which once again would stumble in the Red Zone when Prescott was sacked again by blitzing LB Genard Avery, closing out Q3 with another short Field Goal to net Dallas another three, 19-7. Though Dallas appeared firmly in control, the Browns started Quarter 4 with the ball and used that to their advantage, as Mayfield found Ruggs III and Njoku for five receptions combined, leading his team down the field at the behest of the home crowd. Cleveland showed they still had life with a 2 Yard Rushing Touchdown from back up RB Reggie Gilliam to move within one score of Dallas, 19-14. This time it was Cleveland's defense that showed up, holding Dallas to just one first down on their next drive, though Dallas P Chris Jones perfectly dropped the ball onto the Browns' own 5 yard line. It would prove to be of little challenge to the Browns as Beckham Jr. would explode against rookie CB Bryce Hall for an insane 95 yard Touchdown streak from Mayfield that tore the (non-existent) roof off FirstEnergy Stadium. The two-point conversion failed but the Browns still held a 20-19 lead and all the momentum in the game. With just over 6 minutes left in the game, it was up to Prescott, Zeke and Co. to respond and regain the lead. Respond they did with a tremendous drive that has to have the Jones Family happy they paid Prescott in the Offseason. Dak led the team on its final drive with calmness and an assured nature, finding WR Michael Gallup twice for 12 Yard receptions and Reagor once for a big 15 Yard conversion on 3rd and 5 on the CLE 33. Once inside the Red Zone it was all Zeke, Pollard and a brutish Offensive Line performance. With just under a minute and a half left in the game, Zeke crashed into the End Zone from 1 Yard out and Prescott zipped a laser to Cooper to maximize an 8 point score and lead 27-20. A last gasp was all the Browns had and it was suffocated when Mayfield forced a Slant Route to Beckham Jr. that was Intercepted by LB Jaylon Smith. Most of the Cowboys bench emptied onto the field (to the point where an excessive celebration penalty was enforced) and mobbed Smith as he swiped his way to the End Zone after the play was over.
