Re: Every Team. One Champion

Preliminary Game 5

1988 Washington Redskins (7-9) vs 1969 Philadelphia Eagles (4-9-1)

Williams Helps Skins Hold On

Precise and accurate, Doug Williams went to his primary weapons when he had to and helped pull out a tight game against the 69 Eagles. Art Monk and Kelvin Bryant each caught touchdown passes, the Bryant pass opened up a 24-7 lead for the home team. Norm Snead of the Eagles showed some real skill to bring his team back with the long ball and Snead ended with 291 yards while Harold Jackson ended with 124 in the air and one score. The Eagles cut the lead to three in the fourth on a Tom Woodeshick run but Williams and the Skins kept possession of the ball and milked out the clock in what was a good tight football game. Its the second franchise win the Skins have in this tournament.

Preliminary Game 6

1961 Green Bay Packers (11-3) vs 1995 Denver Broncos (8-8)
A Green Bay Massacre

The greatest coach of all time is Vince Lombardi, and after his absolute demolition of Mike Shanahan and the 1995 Broncos, who can doubt him? The 61 Packers defense forced 8, yes 8, turnovers and played the Broncos off the field. Jim Taylor scored four touchdowns and Paul Hornung another two in what soon became an embarrassing display. If anyone is wondering if old school football can play with a more modern opponent look to this game for a statement and an answer. This Green Bay team is an open real contender for this tournament. Boyd Dowler had 104 yards and Bart Star threw for 225 with two scores, of course the Packers did not turn the football over once all game.

Preliminary Game 7

1970 Baltimore Colts (11-2-1) vs 2018 New York Jets (4-12)

Darnold And Jets; Upset Legend

The 1970 Colts may not have been known as the strongest Super Bowl champion, but no one in their right mind could have predicted what a 4 win Jets team with a rookie quarterback did at Memorial Stadium. After playing a tough three quarters where the Colts lead the score 21-20, Sam Dranold drove the football 91 yards down the field culminating in an 11 yards score to Tyrelle Pryor. The rookie shown calm and skill to make the big drive happen. Johnny Unitas was as good as expected throwing for three scores and 359 yards, even in his advanced age Unitas was superb. Still his efforts would come up short as the Colts vaunted defense especially look vulnerable in this one. Eddie Hinton had 14 receptions for 182 yards in the loss, but the upset we saw here is evidence that we can expect anything to happen on any given game day in this tournament; the first Super Bowl champions to fall are the Colts.

Preliminary Game 8

2016 Seattle Seahawks (10-5-1) vs 2018 Houston Texans (11-5)

Seahawks Survive Texans Test

A battle between two of the most athletic quarterbacks of any era played out at Century Link Field, but in the end it was the defenses that decided the game. The hosts, bolstered by their fans, went up 10-0 in the first quarter with Alex Collins scoring the first touchdown. From there however the Texans defense played very well and in the end held the home team to 25 yards total on the ground. The Seattle defense was just as stout, Deshaun Watson had a hard time getting free and heading into the final period Houston was down by 10; they punted 10 times in the game. Still Watson found Demaryus Thomas for a short score with 2 minutes to play and cut the lead to three. Russell Wilson and the Seahwaks were able to convert a couple first downs and preserve the win in a tough, aggressive game. The modern game can be just as brutal as the old one.

Preliminary Game 9

1975 Kansas City Chiefs (5-9) vs 2005 Oakland Raiders (4-12)

Rivals Tangle At Arrowhead

Anytime the Raiders and the Chiefs meet in any era the game is sure to be fierce and tight. This battle between two losing sides was no different in fact a seven yard run by Lamont Jordan in the 4th quarter tied the game at 17 with 7:14 to play. Withe the ball and the tie, Kerry Collins threw a crucial interception that lead to a Jeff Kinney touchdown and the Chiefs would add a late kick to pull away. Barry Pearson had 143 receiving yards for KC and scored twice on Mike Livingston passes. The Raiders ran the ball well and LaMont Jordan ended with 131 on the ground and a score. The Raiders had more first downs and more total offense but mistakes turn game around, and the Raiders did it to themselves in this loss. Mike Livingston proved the superior of Kerry Collins.

Preliminary Game 10

1966 San Diego Chargers (7-6-1) vs 1997 Arizona Cardinals (4-12)

AFL Charges IN

Carrying the flag for the old AFL, the 1966 Chargers made a statement by shutting out the 1997 Cardinals on their home field 38-0. Cardinals quarterback Jake Plummer was intercepted 4 times and Arizona also lost a fumble and had a punt blocked. The Chargers ran off 17 points in the first quarter and their defense intimidated and outplayed the Arizona front line. Paul Lowe ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns proving again how good the Chargers were in the trenches. Joh Hadl two for three touchdowns, all three coming in the first half before San Diego played more conservative. The AFL was an expolsive league that encouraged offense and risk taking, all the risks paid off tonight for the winning side.

Preliminary Game 11

2016 Atlanta Falcons (11-5) at 1997 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-6)

Falcons Defense Whips Bucks

Trent Dilfer was sacked six times and Devonta Freeman ran for 130 yards in a 27-16 victory for the Falcons. Freeman broke off a 73 tard touchdown run on only his second carry of the game but Tampa hung tough for the first half in the dome scoring on a Mike Alstott dive into the endzone and secured a 10-10 tie at the break. The Falcons defense upped their game and Vic Beasley ahd three sacks in the second half while Matt Ryan threw a 71 yard touchdown to Julio Jones as the home team began to pull away. Jones ended with 111 yards and Tampa could never get back into it. Dilfer should get a medal of honor for the beating he took in this one.
