Re: A Midwestern Legacy (NCAA 14) - Coaching Legacy

Rivals Northern Illinois and Toledo prepare to do battle

Unlike the Bronze Stalk, the rivalry between Northern Illinois and Toledo has no trophy though passions tend to run high between both programs when the two prepare to do battle. Toledo and Northern Illinois have historically been in competition for the MAC West throne which has naturally drawn the heightened passion and levels of play that rivalry games can bring about with so much on the line. The Huskies have struggled in this matchup, thanks in no small part due to a long history of poor play prior to the arrival of Joe Novak who helped energize the program.

While not listed as an official rivalry, the two teams have continued to bring a high level of play, even if one side hasn't been particularly good. Though there have been routs that showcased the fireworks that the MAC is known for including a 70-21 beatdown by the Rockets in 2007, or the Huskies 65-30 beating of the Rockets in 2010. When it comes to scoring, neither team lets off the accelerator and when it comes to scoring this year, this could be another high scoring affair.

The Rockets come into this one skidding at 3-7. Their season started with expectations of competing for the MAC West but will end with a whimper, after their most recent loss eliminated them from bowl contention they will look to push the Huskies to the brink in this one. At the helm is Eli Peters who has been one of the most disappointing developments of the season. After a strong 2018 campaign, Eli suffered injuries that set him back in 2019. With the senior at full health for this season he simply hasn't delivered. With just 7 touchdowns and 9 interceptions and just over 1300 yards passing he sits near the bottom of the MAC in passing and a far cry from Ross Bower's who is nearing 3000 on the season. In fact if it wasn't for Shakif Seymour who has over 1000 rushing yards on the season this offense would have struggled even more. Though touchdowns remain an issue for Seymour as well. His 7 touchdowns on the season have him sixth in the MAC. Though it's difficult when the entire offense is struggling.

While the struggles in key positions has been documented, despite talent in the skill positions on the offensive end has been their inability to generate blocking. They sit in the bottom half of the MAC with 27 sacks allowed heading into this contest. With difficulties keeping Eli Peters upright and despite his own abilities, struggling to keep holes open for Shakif Seymour has spelled doom for this offensive unit.

Their struggles can also be seen on the defensive end, sitting near the bottom of the MAC in yards allowed, sacks, and turnovers. Their defense which was supposed to be one of the best in the MAC has absolutely struggled and with both sides regressing their season quickly went into a tailspin. For the Huskies capitalizing with a win here can propel the Huskies to 6-5, making them bowl eligible and above .500 for the first time this season. It will be a good opportunity for their defense to make a statement.

The Huskies defense has been among the nation's worst, unsurprising given the amount of youth on the roster and freshman starters especially seen in the secondary. Eli Peters has torched the Huskies defense in the past and putting those past struggles behind them would be a big step forward for this young unit as they now eye the post season and work towards their future.

On the offensive end, the Huskies rushing attack has struggled. Erin Collins will need to build some momentum of his own. Ross Bowers should be efficient against the Rockets as they've also struggled through the air, but it'll be important to see if Erin Collins can rise to the occasion and deliver some big plays on the ground.

Re: A Midwestern Legacy (NCAA 14) - Coaching Legacy

Huskies rally behind offense for 34-27 victory

The Huskies came into this rivalry game riding high on the heels of their stunning upset of the Ball State Cardinals and claiming the bronze stalk trophy. Hitting the road to Toledo the Huskies seemingly ran directly into a brick wall as their offense was ineffective and the defense continued to look porous in the opening frame.

Eli Peters opened this rivalry game on a tear and between both him and halfback Shakif Seymour the first quarter looked as though the Rockets would be pulling spoiler for the Huskies hopes of bowl eligibility. The Rocket’s quarterback looked excellent in the first quarter. Completing almost a perfect 6-7 passes and 138 passing yards with his only touchdown pass of the afternoon. A short pass from Eli Peters to Isiah Winstead for a 7 yard touchdown and a 10-0 lead after an early Terrence Cluckey field goal. The lead only grew further after Ross Bowers tossed an interception in Huskies territory. The Rockets capping that drive off with a Micah Kelly pitch for a touchdown scamper.

The quarter break seemed to be exactly what the Huskies needed to reinvigorate their offense. Immediately Ross Bowers came out firing, connecting on a big completion to Tyrice Richie for 25 yards that jumpstarted the offense. Cole Tucker would put the Huskies on the board for the first time with a 13-yard reception from Bowers. The Huskies momentum seemed to slow as the Rockets began to drive on their next drive but shoring up the defense they would hold the Rockets out of the end zone to set them up for a field goal. Almost immediately the Huskies came out gunning yet again. Ross Bowers connecting with Jyran Mitchell for a touchdown to bring the Huskies within six to close out the half.

The score led into 27 unanswered points that broke the game wide open and silenced the Rockets fans that piled in hoping to see their team stun the Huskies. The momentum from the first quarter almost entirely gone, the Huskies were quick to jump out for another score. Ross Bowers connecting with Fabian McCray for a short score and the Huskies first lead, 21-20. Both defenses rising to the occasion for the remainder of the quarter, though the Huskies would get some momentum at the end of the third, pushing nearly to the goal line.

The first play of the fourth quarter was a short run up between guard and tackle for a 2 yard touchdown run, a score that helped create a more comfortable 8 point cushion for the Huskies. The Rockets looked as though they would respond but their next drive stalled out near midfield and they would be forced to punt it off to a hot Huskies offense which charged downfield again. Jevyon Ducker broke a run to the outside and outran the Rockets defense for a score to break this one open in the final 4 minutes of the game. John Richardson would miss the extra point, but the lead remained at 14.

Eli Peters rallied the offense, a big pass play of 38 yards to Bryce Mitchell had the offense churning and star running back Shakif Seymour would finally crack the end zone for his first touchdown of the afternoon and one that brought this one back into striking distance for the Rockets, a 34-27 affair with 2 and a half minutes remaining. The Rockets needed a stop and they would be alive. The stop however wouldn’t come, Erin Collins had one of his better games of the season with a 105 yard rushing performance and would be able to churn out a pair of first downs to put the game on ice for the Huskies.

Northern Illinois improves to bowl eligibility with the victory, their record rising to a 6-5 total. The Toledo Rockets season remained in a tailspin, falling to 3-8 on the season. The Huskies also improved to 2-0 in rivalry games on the season and an impressive tally for freshman coach Tyler Stefanski. A bowl game isn’t guaranteed, the Huskies looking to solidify their resume with a match up looming to close the season against the 3-8 Western Michigan Broncos. A bowl game would be an excellent cap to his first season at the helm.

Re: A Midwestern Legacy (NCAA 14) - Coaching Legacy

Mistakes mar senior night as the Huskies fall to the Broncos 28-18

On a cold fall night in Dekalb, the Huskies senior day celebrations would be cut short as the Western Michigan Broncos escaped with a win to spoil their senior night and to also put their bowl aspirations into question. The Broncos had a standout performance from Kaleb Eleby who finished the day with a pristine 17/25 completion rate and a pair of touchdowns to go with that. He also added 58 yards on the ground in earning player of the game honors for the Broncos who improved to 4-8 on an otherwise dismal season for the squad from Kalamazoo.

The Huskies have had a recent history of starting slow and it was no different on Saturday against the Broncos. La'Darius Jefferson broke out a pair of big runs including a touchdown score to put the Broncos ahead early. The defenses settled in for a back and forth slugfest that ultimately would land in favor of the Broncos, especially thanks to the two turnovers from Ross Bowers interceptions to give them the advantage. Though the Huskies would seem to break through the Broncos defense and get their first points of the afternoon on a short field goal for John Richardson from 23 yards out to make it 7-3.

Kaleb Eleby would put the team on his back to break this one open in the second quarter leading back to back scoring drives. The first a longer drive that ended with the sophomore running the ball in on a read option to make it a 14-3 lead in favor of the Broncos. On the next drive, Ross Bowers would be intercepted by Harrison Taylor setting them up quick and Kaleb Eleby would connect with Jaylen Hall on a fly route for a 35 yard touchdown to quickly make this a 21-3 game a score that would hold into halftime.

Coming out of the half the Huskies offense showed some life, Erin Collins was able to help extend drives converting on strong running as the offensive line was able to get a good push. Capping off their first drive of the second half with a short four yard run by Jevyon Ducker and breathing some life into this Huskies squad that was facing an uphill battle. The defenses continued to slug it out, with the Huskies starting to finally push at the end of the third quarter, culminating in a short touchdown rush for Erin Collins from 3 yards out. A roll out pass to Tyrice Richie brought the Huskies within 3, 21-18.

The momentum wouldn't stay alive for the Huskies however, almost immediately the Broncos responded on their own after big time completions by Kaleb Elby moved the ball quickly downfield, he would connect with Janet Curtis for a 23 yard touchdown reception extended the lead to 10 points and putting this one out of reach for a Huskies offense that seemed to run out of steam in the final frame. The Broncos defense holding tight to close out the season finale in favor of the Broncos.

With the loss, the Huskies fall to 6-6 on the season. The loss also knocked them out of the MAC conference championship, by virtue of a Ball State victory that helped them finish with a better conference record than the Huskies. The regular season will end on a disappointing note, but the Huskies will look to bowl season and beyond.

Re: A Midwestern Legacy (NCAA 14) - Coaching Legacy

Huskies to miss postseason

As the bowl schedules came out and teams were invited to their bowls, the Huskies found themselves on the wrong side of the fence as their season will end at 6-6 after falling against the Western Michigan Broncos to end their regular season.

"It's a disappointing way to end our season. We put in the work, but so did many other teams and we didn't get a call for a thirteenth game. For our seniors this one will sting the most. We will take some time to work on the film and ready the team for next season. It's been a hell of a year. We were given next to no shot to be competitive. We fought tough against some talented teams and we were right in the mix for the MAC Championship until the final week. Our team is extremely young, they showed what they are capable of. I'm excited for this team to turn the corner." Coach Tyler Stefanski spoke once the news broke.

Despite the somber news that came out, there is a lot of hope for the future. A program that saw a sudden and abrupt rise, the fall had been just as quick. Next season could be a big one to returning them to the mid-major prominence they were able to enjoy in the early 2010's.

Re: A Midwestern Legacy (NCAA 14) - Coaching Legacy

NCAA End of Season Review

2020 NCAA National Champions

Miami Hurricanes (14-1)

The Hurricanes ran through the state of Iowa by beating both major colleges in Iowa and Iowa State en route to a national championship with head coach Manny Diaz putting a tremendous cap on a stunning season by overcoming the odds and rally past the Cyclones for the national championship in a 38-31 victory.

Transfer quarterback D'Eriq King helped propel the Hurricanes to these newfound heights including capping off their national title run with a huge 20-35 performance throwing for 305 yards and 4 touchdowns to overcome the Cyclones in the national championship earning player of the game honors after capping off his Heisman campaign, in front of a crowd dominated by Hurricane faithful.

The playoff had it's own fair share of controversy with Alabama getting a spot in the playoffs despite a very qualified SEC Champion Florida Gator squad not getting in. Adding to this, an unexpected performance from the state of Iowa to have two teams both seen as long shots in their own conferences much less in the national picture steamrolling their way to the top four.
