Turning the Corner: a Dallas Cowboys Franchise (M22)

Hot seat. Lame duck. Coaching for his job. These are the phrases most often used to describe Mike McCarthys current status as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He’s certainly acknowledged the pressure in scattered interviews this off-season but it doesn’t seem to rattle him. Mike McCarthy was well aware of the expectations when he accepted this job. He’s vowed to be more hands-on with the offense this upcoming season and that makes sense given the offensive collapse late last year.

If there’s pressure on the head coach, then there’s also mounting pressure on QB Dak Prescott. He’s indeed one of the highest paid players in the league and outside of his fine statistics, he was disappointing in his first year of his sparkling new contract. Or uneven, if we want to be fair. He needs a consistent season of play to quiet his growing list of detractors. Needless to say, this is a big season for Prescott.

The temperature is rising for this era of the Dallas Cowboys. If they want to turn the corner, that process continues with the looming NFL Draft.

Mock Draft

On NFL.com’s last mock draft before night 1 of the draft, the panel projected the Cowboys to select LB Nakobe Dean out of Georgia.

How He Fits: If selected, Nakobe Dean and Micah Parsons would form perhaps the best linebacker duo in the league. Dean is a force on defense and might’ve been the best player on Georgias vaunted defense. Having a heat seeking missile like Dean would free up Parsons to do more pass rushing and free lancing. It’s been a long day time since Dallas has that collective amount of speed on defense. Nakobe Dean would be a heck of a pick.

We’ll see if the front office feels the same way on draft day.

Night One of the NFL Draft

Top 5 Draft Picks
1. Aidan Hutchinson - NYG
2. Evan Neal - Jax
3. Kenny Pickett - NYG
4. Charles Cross - NO
5. Kayvon Thibodeaux - SD

With the 24th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select:

Tyler Smith, Tackle, Tulsa

How He Fits: The Cowboys have a dire need at left guard and Tyler Smith is the favorite to fill that position. He does project favorably to tackle with his athleticism so there’s potential he could also be the left tackle of the future once Tyron steps down.

Ceedee Lamb excelling as WR1

The season is just two weeks old, but Ceedee Lamb is taking well to being Dak’s number one target. While the Cowboys dropped the season opener at Tennessee, #88 hauled in 9 receptions for 87 yards. He followed that up with 7 receptions for 109 yards plus a touchdown against the Texans.

If he keeps this up, the Cowboys will look smart for moving on from Amari Cooper.

Micah Parsons and Ezekiel Elliott injured in loss to Eagles

It wasn’t enough that the Eagles punched the Cowboys in the mouth in South Philly. The Cowboys also limped away with injuries to two of their key players. Ezekiel Elliott pulled his groin and will be out close to a month. Micah Parsons tore his labrum and will be out of action roughly the same amount of time.

Fortunately, the Cowboys are headed into the bye week to give the team a little time to get adjusted to not having Elliott and Parsons available.
