Its why I was able to destroy my way up the leagues every year in this save. Those teams don't try and get players above their level/rep. So me getting players every year two and three levels above us just destroyed every team we played. But also why my finances are so messed up.
In general, yes, it really depends on how deep you go though, The mod that I'm using for the German divisions has been working quite well in terms of doing things that make sense, as well as maintaining a semblance of difficulty. My issue is with England, where the VNS/VNN/VNL typically have players in the 30-70 range so there's not much to go below. Going to Level 11 from Level 6 means the difference in ability stretches 5 levels down, from 50 to 0, and the other way goes from 70 to 200. There's just far less options out there.

On that note, in my editing of dbs, I found the solution to players/teams and I'll be implementing it in my new USA one shortly, and that's matching initial reputations.

EDIT:

this looks so nice and tidy. I wish it would never change

Wait, how do you do scouting yourself? There's a way to spot besides assigning your scouts to players to get reports on them?

So, are you guys saying it's best to just roll with the standard database? I think I might start today a save with a team in the Vanarama South or North (no clue how to choose who!), and then just load up all the leagues from the UK and roll with that. Thoughts?

I think it's best to do it how you think you'll enjoy it the most. Ultimately I found the additional levels(at least anything beyond 9) to not be as challenging as I normally like, I didn't have to do much in the way of preparation, it was just play the match and go up. However if there is a team you'd like to bring up, then it makes perfect sense to go through that arduous task. The biggest challenge, the lower you go, is always the finances.

Speaking of finances, aside from our "payable once 1860 reach the top division loan" we're out of debt! Which means....

Good deal. Think I'm going to roll with a team from the National League, and load up just the UK leagues too.

Doesn't seem to be much point in adding other leagues until I get a bit more relevant.

I've taken a liking to Orient for some reason. May wind up rolling with them.

Trials. Have them come in on a trial so you can get the full picture. Because lower level scouts are **** and never give you a full picture of the player. That way you can see their full potential, weaknesses etc based on you and your assistants opinion. I go player searching for non contract players and offer them them all trials.

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

I started an unemployed save over the weekend and ended up at Clyde in the 4th tier in Scotland. My god what a wasteland... How they've convinced David Goodwillie to play there IRL is beyond me.

But anyway, scouting is absolutely dire at the lower levels if you have attribute masking on. I don't even know if I can continue like this. My 2-man scouting staff is doing their best, but you don't really get much info at all.

Which I guess is pretty realistic to be honest. I'm not even paying one of the guys, lol.
