      2015 Cardinals Franchise

we are heading into August with a 2.5 game lead on the Cubs and a 4.5 game lead on the Reds. The Pirates and Brewers are still just participating.

While I didn't make any trades at the deadline (couldn't decide what, if anything should be done), it was extremely busy.

*Cubs added Will Venable from Padres
      * Dodgers added Yoenis Cespedes from A's
      * Indians added Brian McCann from Yanks

And right now I can't remember the others..LOL

I think with the depth I have in the minors, if I can get to the 40-man roster call up with the lead, that we have enough fire power to stay in first, or at least the playoff hunt. I didn't want to sell out our future to win today, which is what it would've taken to make some of the deals I thought about.

      I simply love this game.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

We are currently 0 for August as we have now lost 5 straight. I just got swept by the Rockies in Denver, and lost the first of 3 to the Diamondbacks.

Our current slump has allowed the Cubs to now pull within a 1/2 game of the lead and the Reds to get within 2 1/2 games.

Our bats are KILLING us at the moment as we can get guys on base, but we simply cannot drive home runs.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Tampa Bay Rays 2014 All Star Break Franchise Update

I am currently sitting at 55-42 at the All Star break. 2nd place in the AL East and 6.0 games back of the 1st place Red Sox. We are also currently holding the first spot in the Wild Card race as well. I also play every game with no simming.

It has been a really fun year so far and a battle to try and overtake the Red Sox. Ben Zobrist is the team MVP without a doubt. Evan Longoria and Wil Myers continue to struggle with Longoria still not even batting .200. An early season trade with the Dodgers for Andre Ethier has helped this lineup tremendously. A June trade with the Atlanta Braves for Evan Gattis has really helped the catching situation which was our major weakness in the early part of the season. Ryan Hanigan was traded back to the Reds for Brayan Pena which ultimately did not end up working out. Pena was shipped to the Braves along with Hak-Ju Lee for Gattis.

Chris Archer and David Price have been the Rays best starters without question.

          Chris Archer: 11-1, 2.58 ERA, 124K

          David Price: 11-6, 2.64 ERA, 125K

The team has been injury free for the most part. We did just lose Jeremy Hellickson for a few weeks after he suffered a head concussion on a ball smoked back at his head. With the All Star break and off days scheduled in July, we don't need a 5th starter until the first week of August. If Hellickson isn't ready by then, then Jake Odorizzi will be called up to start. He is having a decent year in AAA with a 9-8 record and an ERA of 3.41.

Yunel Escobar has really heated up over the last 2 weeks hitting .375 with 2 home runs and 10 RBI in his last 10 games.

David Price, Chris Archer, Grant Balfour, Ben Zobrist, and Evan Gattis are all representing the Rays in the 2014 All Star Game.

Can't wait to play out the rest of this season and see what happens. I'm chasing those Red Sox for the division, but am glad the Wild Card is there to fall back on. We have a 3 game series with the Red Sox at the end of July that should really be good.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

Marlins End of May 2015 Update

Well, the Marlins were probably due for some regression, and boy did they ever regress in May. The team faltered to a 10-17 record in the month.

The team went from being decently in first to now third place in the NL East, though just 2 1/2 games out. However, the team is now clinging to stay over .500. Again.

            NL East StandingsNats: 32-24
            Braves: 30-26, 2 GB
            Marlins: 29-26, 2.5 GB
            Mets: 27-28, 4.5 GB
            Phillies: 20-36, 12 GB

The "new offense" has looked a lot like the old one in May. Poor Andrew Heaney has been the worst victim, sitting at just 5-4 with a 2.38 ERA, best in the rotation.

Adam Lind has disappeared in May, hitting not a single home run in the month and watching his average fall to .268. Chris Taylor also slowed down in May, dropping into the .260s in batting average and down to .327 in OBP - just not good enough for a lead off hitter.

Yelich and Stanton remain the major constants, as usual, with Yelich rocking a slash line of .319/.385/.536 while Stanton has 15 HR and a .589 SLG to go with his .308 batting average. The strikeouts haven't really come down a lot, still at over 20% rate, but with that production, no one will care.

Whatever happened to Hechavarria in 2014, the opposite has occurred in 2015, though he's been pushed out of playing time by Moran at 3B, so it may not be a particularly fair comparison. Still, Hech is under .200 right now in 94 AB.

On the mound, the Marlins are still strong - for the most part. Ramos looks like he's back on his game with a 1.17 ERA while Leone is sporting a 1.64 ERA. Henderson Alvarez is staying solid with a 2.68 and Jose Fernandez is at 2.80, which might be "bad" by his standards.

Brian Flynn, however, has not done the job at #5 and will be replaced starting June 1st. Nate Eovaldi might get another look, though the Marlins have more than a few arms to consider.

            Player Development News

SP Andrew Heaney might not be getting run support, but scouts are loving what he's doing. Already an "A" prospect, scouts have mentioned that he looks even more impressive this season. In terms of upside, one scout said that Heaney is "just slightly below Jose Fernandez and in two or three years, Haeney will be every bit as good as Jose."

SP Justin Nicolino is trying to get back on the radar as he tries to wrest the spotlight away from harder-throwing pitchers Anthony DeSclafani and Adam Conley. Those two plus Nicolino have tracked largely side-by-side until this point. Scouts pushed Nicolino up to "A" prospect status after a 7-3, 2.71 ERA showing for the Zephyrs so far. While the cautionary tale of Angel Sanchez is still fresh in the organization's mind, Nicolino might be getting his first shot at the majors sooner than later.

Not to be outdone, SP Tyler Kolek also had more praise heaped upon him. After going 4-1 with a 3.36 ERA for the Suns, scouts are more convinced than ever that big things await the big 19-year-old power pitcher. The Marlins, however, remain concerned about that .416 BABIP allowed. Still, Kolek might be forcing the hands of the top brass for a shot at the AAA level.

Plucky SS Chris Taylor got some love from baseball pundits despite an up-and-down start to the season. Perhaps what he showed in April has folks thinking the second year player is on the verge of breaking out. He is still a "B" prospect for now, though.

Injury and poor performance has put a ding on the luster of LF Matt Baldwin. He's still a "B" rated prospect, but the news was a bit somber on him after a .211/.276/.300 showing. So far, those concerns about his bat control and approach at the plate have proven true.

If the Marlins weren't making catcher prospects a priority target in the upcoming Amateur Draft, this downgrade of Rob Brantley would make them do so. Brantley, like Baldwin, has the double whammy of injury and ineptitude working against him.

Overall, these developments continue to make the Marlins farm grow stronger, especially on the mound.

"It's ridiculous how good this team's rotation could be if everything works out. I mean, Fernandez, Haeney, Boeve, Kolek, and either Feliz or Nicolino - that's just unfair, and that's not getting into the second tier, which isn't exactly bad, " one scout spoke.

Of course, if the Marlins stay in contention and the offense stays MIA through June and July, one has to wonder if some of those pitchers don't get offered up for a big bat.

            Marlins Draft Targets

            Prime Objective: Catcher
The team needs to fix the catching prospect situation. The major league catching situation, bad as it is, represents the best the team has there. Tommy Cruz is the only notable prospect there and he might not even have the conditioning to play the position at all without frequent rest days. Not good enough.

Secondary Targets: First Base, Second Base
The Marlins have little at these positions as well with no one at the majors locking them down. Granted, Hechavarria could go to 2B and Didi Gregorius is still around, though injured, neither player can really be expected to contribute on offense and Solano is more than fine on defense. The Marlins need an impact prospect to push the existing candidates along...or out of the way.

At first base, it's even worse. There's Lind and..............(crickets). Oh, Viciedo...though he has no business holding a bat against a RHP. Both he and Montero are pure platoon players...and both versus LHP platoon players. Freddie Aquino has potential, but he is raw and not doing a thing for the Suns and is hurt. Then there's David Cooper (who?), Ryan Rieger (who??), Ramon Santos (who?!). Yeah.

And in the "you can never have too much pitching department" the Marlins would likely grab a pitcher if one was the best player they think they could grab. As if the Marlins need more young pitching.

"They say you can't have too many young pitchers to groom. I think the Marlins might be close enough, " an analyst spoke, "Seriously, what are they going to do with any more young pitchers?"

              Road to 28 Update:

I have had a busy past couple of weeks with school being out and work and homely (if that's even a word) duties taking charge. In anticipation of a longer hiatus than I anticipated, I have simulated the regular season and advanced into the playoffs.

With that being said, it should be of no surprise that the Yankees won the AL East and secured home field advantage throughout the American League playoffs. I will be posting an update video soon as I will be going on vacation in early October and will have to figure out a schedule to roll out my playoff videos.

Although I know I may not get many followers, the few that do are much appreciated. So stay tuned and thank you all!

                  Marlins 2015 Amateur Draft Results

Overall, not the most impressive draft ever, but not a bad one either. Let's look at who the Marlins hooked out of this year's amateur talent pool.

                  Round 1: 1B Stan Brito, 18, ETA: 2021
                  Consensus Grades: Contact: 20/55, Power: 50/80, Speed: 30/40, Fielding: 40/50, Arm: 40/60, Overall: 30/80

Power, power, power. This kid wowed scouts with his 400-foot bombs in his HS playing time. That made him one of the "blue chip" prospects, and he fell to the Marlins at 17th overall. There are some key concerns about this kid, probably the reasons why he fell to the mid-1st round. Like many young power hitters, he tends to swing from his heels trying to jack one every time. That leads to long swings with holes and being fool a lot out of the zone. He tends to be much more comfortable facing lefties and will need to prove he's not just a pinch-hit or platoon option in the future. Back problems are also a concern for him, though working with professional trainers could help that situation. Defensively, he has decent reaction to the ball in play and moves and throws well enough to perhaps stick in the corner outfield or be a 1B with an above average, for the position, glove.

                  Round 2: C Lindsay Robertson, 18, ETA: 2016

                  Consensus Grades: Contact: 60/70, Power: 50/60, Speed: 40/50, Fielding: 50/60, Arm: 35/45, Overall: 50/60

The big draw for Lindsay is that he's such a refined player, especially for his age. There's thoughts that he could skip the minors entirely and start for the Marlins behind the plate next season and, at the least, should get a heavy does of action next Spring Training. His defense needs the most work, but with that said, he's got a very solid base to work from with good actions and mental concentration for the entire game. His arm is the primary concern as he's more a receiver than a gunslinger behind the plate. He's a switch hitter with some good pop and quick hands through the zone, and playing running back for his high school squad shows some of his toughness, athleticism and what will translate to decent speed for a catcher. Lindsay could end up as the best player out of the Marlins draft and figures to be a real win to grab him in the middle of the second round.

                  Round 3: 2B Rodney Gonzalez, 21, ETA: 2016
                  Consensus Grades: Contact: 50/65, Power: 50/60, Speed: 50/55, Fielding: 40/50, Arm: 30/40, Overall: 45/55

Rodney is another who might challenge for a starting spot next Spring Training. He doesn't blow you away and his upside is consider limited as he got where he is more on work ethic than raw athleticism. Still, he is a solid hitter with the makings of being a patient grinder at the plate that can run up pitch counts. This follows with his making the most out of coachable skills to make up for his limited physical capacity. Defense is where the lack of athleticism hurts most as his reactions are decent, but his feet and hands don't have that natural, smooth feel when watching him work with the leather. One thing he's dispelled is that his slender frame (just 164 lbs) would be unable to hold up over a season. He's never missed a game due to injury at the college level and coaches report he needed minimal rest. "A Cal Ripken-lite" one of his managers called him.

Round 4: SP Joe Smith, 21, ETA: 2021

                  Consensus Grades: Fastball: 50/60, Change-up: 40/50, Slider: 40/50, Command: 30/50, Overall: 25/50

The Marlins just can't help themselves. Even in the middle rounds, the Marlins have to take a starting pitcher. Joe has a pretty nondescript name and has nondescript stuff to go with it. It's not bad stuff, per se, just nothing you haven't seen before. His actual pitches are probably average major league quality, or will be with time, but his real problem is using those pitches effectively. He tends to make a lot of mistakes with his location, which is something he'll have to improve on if he is to have any chance. If he does, he could be an average pitcher (read: trade bait on this team), but nothing more in my eyes.

Round 5: RF Juan Veras, 18, ETA: 2016
                  Consensus Grades: Contact: 50/50, Power: 45/50, Speed: 60/65, Fielding: 20/35, Arm: 45/60, Overall: 40/45

Juan must have played mostly DH in high school because his fielding is atrocious right now. You expect prep players to have holes and warts in some parts of their game, but you do expect to see a base to work from. That doesn't seem to be here with Juan's defense. Slow to get his feet moving and bad routes and reaction to the ball spells trouble. Offensively, it's not all bad. He'll probably be a .260 hitter with a some power, and he has the speed to grab a triple here or there and his share of doubles. Probably will be some threat to steal a base as well. Hard to project him for any decent playing time with his poor defense, though. Probably a good pinch hitter who can do a bit of damage, and then is subbed out next half inning if at all possible.

Round 6: CF Phil Stubbs, 19, ETA: 2021
                  Consensus Grades: Contact: 20/40, Power: 60/70, Speed: 60/70, Fielding: 30/50, Arm: 45/55, Overall: 30/50

Stubbs is a really interesting looking kid, probably the most interesting in terms of wondering how his minor league career will go and how (and if) he'll develop as his current skill profile reads. Stubbs features good power to all fields and, when he lines up the ball, all of his batted ball types have good pace on them, making them more difficult to defend. The problem is that getting the bat on the ball part. He's a lot like Brito, the team's 1st round pick, in that regard. Long swing and doesn't want to cut down on it for any reason and tries to force the issue too much. Defensively, he needs a lot of work, but his speed should allow him to be passable or better as he can outrun some of his mistakes. His arm could maybe be plus, but even at a tick above average, it's good enough to not hold him back. If things work out, he could be a dark horse for the organization, a potential monster for extra base hits with his speed-power combination.

Round 7: RP Francisco Herrera, 21, ETA: Not Expected to Reach Majors
                  Consensus Grades: Curve: 40/60, Sinker: 30/60, Slider: 30/60, Command: 20/40, Overall: 20/30

Francisco simply has no idea where the ball is going. It moves sharply, but he has no concept of adjusting his initial aim point so that the ball ends up where the catcher wants it. He takes "effectively wild" to the extreme, and combine that with weak velocity, and it doesn't work. He doesn't have that controlled aggression that can intimidate hitters. His pitches can end up down the middle or in the middle of a guy's back. Francisco's off-speed is his biggest weapon along with his heavy sinker, which too often bounces to the plate. If batters are overly aggressive, Francisco will have them looking silly, but a lot of that is predicated on getting ahead in the first place. Alas, therein lies the rub for Francisco.

                  Overall Draft Grade: B
The Marlins' first three picks were logical and netted prospects with some possibilities to upside surprise or turn into solid-or-better major leaguers if their development simply stays on course. The pick up of Stubbs is also interesting, especially for a 6th round selection. While the selection of Joe Smith was simply unnecessary and Francisco Herrera is the epitome of a "Hail Mary" pick, the Marlins at least attempted to address the key issues in their farm, and that's always a positive.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

Decided to have some fun and start a new Braves (my favorite team) franchise with Hank Aaron imported from the player vault onto the team. I then simulated through July and I'm now planning on playing the rest of the schedule which will be about 55 games. And while I thought the Hank Aaron CAP from the roster vault I downloaded would have a great season, I didn't expect him to be this "great."

                    109 G, .358/.450/.888, 53 HR, 112 RBI, 31 2B, 3 3B

Again, that's in just 109 games. I've played 6 games and I've already hit three more homers and knocked in seven more runs with Aaron, so he's up to 56 HR and 119 RBI on the season in 115 games.

The Braves record is 74-41, we have a 12 game lead over the Nationals in the division, and a two game lead on the Dodgers for the best record in the NL and all of baseball.

Haha....breaking up the no-no is a great feeling.
                            I know what you mean.

Okay...after a long and tough season...the Mets grabbed the first Wild Card spot in the N.L. and faced the S.F. Giants(didn't see that one....they were way behind mid-season!) for the W.C. game. Posey was the N.L. hitting leader batting .352 for the season with 22 homers. S.F. also picked up Adam Lind and the lineup with them plus Sandoval, Pence and Morse was pretty formidable.
Wheeler handled them easily however shutting them out 2-0.
A first inning homer by David Wright was enough.

The A.L. Wild Card was Seattle vs. Oakland. Felix Hernandez went 8 innings for the win as Seattle made quick work of the A's with a 9-3 win.

Are most of these offline franchises? They running pretty smoothly?

Mine is an offline franchise with no issues.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
