Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

So there I was sitting at home, minding my own business listening to the wife complain about me playing The Show 17 again…Then I noticed a phone call coming from my phone with 510 area code. Oh course I answered it cause I didn’t know anyone with that area code. I then heard the man with a play, Billy Bean, stun by the offer that he gave me. He offered a 9 million 3 year offer to help him rebuild the Oakland A’s.
Of course, I didn’t know what to say, I was just an ordinary guy with no skills as GM. I told him that I would accept his offer. Let the rebuild of this great franchise begin.

    January 16:
Just before spring training I had to think of the team, the scouts, and the coaches, where to begin. First the Roster, we need to make a big splash. Need to bring that guys in through trade that will fit around the core players, but where to start. I got it, we need a centerfielder and leadoff hitter that can play in the outfield of Oakland Coliseum. I called Kansas City and got wheeling and dealing with them and brought in Lorenzo Cain, I know that he is going to be a FA at the end of the year, but if we do good I think we could resign him.
Next, we need a #1 starting pitcher, I looked across the bay and knowing the Giants minor leagues have no one there and they are loaded at starting pitching. That’s right I got the big guy, Jeff Samardzija. He was a perfect fit in our budget and I believed he was number one plus we have team control on him for a couple of season and Hunter Strickland.
After that day I need a break and have dinner with the Wife, she pick a nice restaurant downtown.

    January 17:
Well back at it again, where else do we need help at. I called in some of the scouts to get there opinion on the roster, of course they just through a bunch of jargen at me trying to intimidate the rookie GM. Finally, have enough, I said Bullpen. There was silence in the room. “Listen we when games through pitching and defense. We where 4th in the MLB in home runs and that got you nowhere. Let’s go back to the tried and true. Pitching and defense.”

Made a few more calls to various teams to get a feel on what they wanted and during those calls the Dodgers called me. Offered me Yasmani Grandal, I couldn’t say no. Switch hitting Catcher with power. We can work with him. Let’s do it.

Few hours later, I secured more bullpen help with the Marilins since Derek Jeter was doing a fire sale down there in Maimi. Thank you. Welcome back Brad Ziegler and welcome Kyle Barraclough and a small deal for Jake McGee, of the Rockies.

Now on to Arizona for Spring Training……..

    March 31:

Sorry for not writing, but spring training was fun and busy. Seem like every news caster want to talk to the new GM and want to bash the trades that I made, but that is life in pro sports. I can tell you that we walked out of spring training with no injuries and our roster all set up. I trust Bob Melvin a lot, but something about him just strikes me off, anyway he was really helpful on setting the roster. I told him that the biggest thing right now for us is that we carry 13 pitchers, our hitters are still to young to bring up and they need more time. He agreed to try it and see what happens.

    Starting Pitchers

    1. Jeff Samardzija
    2. Sean Manaea
    3. Kendall Graveman
    4. Chris Bassitt
    5. Jharel Cotton

    Relief Pitchers

    1. LRP Raul Alcantara
    2. MRP Brad Ziegler
    3. MRP Daniel Coulombe
    4. MRP Ryan Dull
    5. MRP Hunter Strickland
    6. SU Jake McGee
    7. SU Kyle Barraclough
    8. CP Blake Treinen

    Starting Lineup
    1. CF Lorenzo Cain
    2. RF Matt Joyce
    3. 2B Jed Lowrie
    4. DH Kris Davis
    5. 1B Matt Olson
    6. 3B Matt Chapman
    7. C Yasmani Grandal
    8. SS Marcus Semien
    9. LF Dustin Fowler

    Bench
    1. 3B/RF/LF Renato Nunez
    2. RF/2B/SS/3B Chad Pinder
    3. C Dustin Garneau

I think the team looks good, we have speed and power. Pitching could be better, but if Bassitt has a bounce back year and Cotton turns to the ace that we know he could be. Our starters will be the best in the league. The bullpen is solid if make it to the 6th inning or 7th inning with a lead game is over.

Well wish me luck, cause tomorrow starts a new year and we got the Angles for a four-game series. I know they are tough with Trout and Pujols.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

The month of June has come to a close with us on a 4 game winning streak. We still sit 4 1/2 games behind the Pirates, but we are currently the top wildcard team.

Now the focus shifts to what to do in the next 4 weeks in terms of roster moves to better our team, if anything. Again, about the only thing I'm longing for is a power hitter off the bench that could change the course of a game with one swing of the bat. Other than that, our pitching staff is solid and our new everyday lineup is producing. Giving Holliday a few days off per week is working well as he's currently in the middle of 7 game hitting streak. Tommy Pham is hitting over .400 since coming back and Jon Jay has been solid all year. Reuben Tejada was our starting SS for part of the year, but has been replaced by DeJong due to DeJong giving our lineup more balance. However, Tejada is hitting over .300 and plays quite a bit when Holliday is on one of his 3 rest days for the week.

What I need to find is another IF who can both field and hit. Jacob Wilson is currently up with the big club, but he's not a great hitter and his lack of arm strength means he is forced to play on the right side of the diamond. Aledmys Diaz who I pegged last offseason as being our everyday SS this year, is currently in Memphis as we try to get his bat going. Thus far its working as he's hitting .375 over 10 games or so. I'm thinking we'll bring him back and put Wilson back down in Memphis.

As for who we would trade, I'm really not sure. Just like real life, our outfield is crowded with talent, but I'm not one to give up top level prospects to win today. But in this case with Bader, Mercado, Hurst, Plummer, Casilla, Fabregas, Ray, and Martini(though injured) being on the cusp of playing at the big league level, we may be forced to make a move. We'll see how things shake out and who's available on the market that could make our team better and ready for a big 2nd half run to get us into October and to the World Series.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

We lost the series finale against the Braves thus ending our 4 game winning streak. We still sit 4 1/2 games behind the Pirates and are tied with the Cubs in the wildcard. Next up is a 3 game series in PNC Park against the division leading Pirates. We took 2 out of 3 just a week ago when we played in St.Louis.

We are a week away from the All-Star Game. Thus far we are sending Matt Carpenter and Magnerius Sierra for sure and I think we'll get Trevor Rosenthal there as well. None of our starters appear to be making the roster which is disappointing considering we have Bumgarner, Wacha (reigning Cy Young award winner), and Carlos Martinez.

We are still exploring the landscape of the trade market as the deadline nears. Our biggest need/want is an impact bat to bring off the bench, but the market doesn't seem favorable to that need. Have thought about picking up another veteran catcher as Thole and Ellis really aren't getting things done and I would like someone who produces a little bit better so that Carson Kelly doesn't have to play as often. If I get him the same type of rest that I do Holiday, he performs better.

All in all, we our roster is built the way I want it to be, just need people to produce.

Took game 1 vs the Pirates 5-2 thanks to great hitting with runners on base and Carpenter's 2 run homerun. Mike Leake pitched well going 7 strong while allowing 2 runs on 7 hits. We have moved to within 3 1/2 of the Buccos for first place.

We have Wacha and Bumgarner going to finish out the series. Then we have an off day before playing in Philadelphia to close out the first half of the season.

In other news the Cubs are in the battle for the wildcard and division despite being with Rizzo for the entire year and Bryant being shelved for over a month. Very surprised they were able to overcome those two blows and be above .500 and contending.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

Beat the Pirates in a 12 inning nail biter to win the first 2 games of a 3 game series. We are now 2 1/2 games back of the division lead. We won the game thanks to Jacob Wilson hitting a routine ground ball in the Top of the 12th to Kang with bases loaded and 2 outs. Kang booted the ball thus allowing the game winning run to cross the plate. Rosenthal shut down the Pirates in the bottom of the inning to preserve the 4-3 victory.

The win didn't come without a price as our bullpen was spent and Wacha left the game with a hand injury in the 4th. I'm hoping he can avoid the DL as we have the 4 days off for the All-Star break coming up in a few days plus his normal rest.

Next up is the series finale with Madison Bumgarner on the bump against Gerritt Cole. A sweep would be huge.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

Lost the series finale against the Pirates as once again Madison Bumgarner was lit up in his start. He only lasted 5 innings allowing 5 runs on 11 hits. Some great defensive plays kept this from being worse than what it was. Danny Farqhuar wasn't much better out of the pen, as he came into the game in the 6th, with us trailing 5-2 after getting two runs in the top of the 6th, and allowed 4 runs without recording an out thus putting the game out of reach. Final score was 10-3.

We also lost the series opener in Philadelphia 6-1 as Jake Thompson shut us down. Carlos Martinez didn't have his best stuff allowing 6 runs in 6 innings and walking 7.

We have two more left in Philly before the All-Star break. We are currently 3 1/2 games out of first place in the Central and are still tied with the Cubs in the wildcard.

We took the final two games against the Phillies to close out the first half of the season. We are still 3 1/2 games back of the Pirates and 1/2 game behind the Cubs for the top wildcard position.

Our focus will now turn to what to do over the next few weeks in an effort to better our roster for a run at a 3rd straight NL Central Division crown.

Currently playing the Futures Game. Love this game both in real life and in game.

Then it will be MLB and AAA All-Star Game before getting back to the grind that is the 2nd half of the season.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

USA beat the World 5-3 to win the Futures Game

AL beat the NL 6-5 to win the All-Star game. Josh Phegley hit a 2 out, 2 run HR off of Kenley Jansen for the walkoff win.

We had 3 guys in the All-Star game: Matt Carpenter, Trevor Rosenthal, and Magnerrius Sierra. Sierra has now won NL Rookie of the year last year and was an All-Star this year. Not a bad way to begin a career.

Next up is the AAA All-Star game.

Got the 2nd half of the season off to a good start with a 7-2 victory over the Cubs. With the Pirates losing we are now within a 1/2 game of the lead. Our win didn't come without issues, as Wacha left his 2nd straight start with arm troubles and this time he'll head the DL. Wacha pitched to 2 batters before being injured. Lyons pitched phoenomenally out of the pen going 6 innings and picking up the win.

Holliday extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games.

Next up is game 2 as we have Bumgarner on the mound.

A sweep of the Cubs and we are currently sitting on top of the division with a 1/2 game lead over the Pirates. Our bats have started out hot in the 2nd half and our pitching has been dominant.

Next up is 3 at home against the NL East leading Mets.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

We are about 2 weeks out of the trade deadline and as I review our roster and look at the market, I'm thinking that we have everything we need already on our roster to make a deep run into October.

However, there is one crazy trade option/idea that is on the table, that as crazy as it sounds, I'm actually considering.

                        That trade?:

                        Yankees get:

                        SP Madison Bumgarner

                        Cardinals get:

                        C Brian McCann
                        RP Andrew Miller
                        Prospect (forgot who they offered)

Now I know this may seem silly to consider. I mean, who trades MadBum when they want to make a deep run in October? Who trades MadBum no matter what?

Well here's the reasoning for the consideration.

MadBum has struggled this year. If you've followed you know that in his past 5 starts he's only pitched beyond the 5th inning once (his last start/first start of 2nd half). His ERA is near 4, which isn't horrific, but not what I expected when I signed him to $30MM per year. He will have to have an excellent 2nd half to win 15 games this year. And while I'm aware of what he could bring to the table in October, I'm also realizing that we have a slew of arms in the minors (granted they aren't Bumgarner) that I believe are capable enough to help us in the postseason, should we get there. I believe they could definitely get us to the postseason.

If we made this deal, in return we get one of the best left handed relievers in the game and we would get a left handed hitting catcher that would be a great platoon for Carson Kelly, who isn't playing poorly, but I wasn't expecting him to be the everyday catcher this year. I thought Yadier would play one more year and platoon with Kelly. Josh Thole is doing a good job at platooning, but lets face it, he's no Brian McCann. Plus we would get a prospect, although I really don't remember who it was.

Maybe I'm crazy to consider this deal. Again, its MadBum for crying out loud. But at his price, I could add two very significant pieces to our roster that I feel would greatly benefit us getting to and playing in October.

                        Decisions, decisions.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

We would be shedding payroll as MadBum is at $30MM per year and McCann and Miller combined are at $24MM I think it was. So lets say we dump $5MM. McCann and Miller would be rentals as they both are in final year of contracts.

I most likely wouldn't resign MadBum (mutual option after this year), so its a rental piece for rental piece in terms of the trade, plus we get a controllable prospect.

Our bullpen is solid, but Andrew Miller is in a league of his own. McCann provides a better bat than that of Thole. Thole was only signed to be a veteran in the development of Kelly.

The more I consider this deal, the more I like it. If we traded MadBum our rotation would still consist of:

                            Michael Wacha
                            Carlos Martinez
                            Lance Lynn
                            Mike Leake
                            Alex Reyes/Tim Cooney/Jack Flaherty/Trey Nielsen/Marco Gonzales

And the addition of Miller would make our bullpen:

                            Tyler Lyons
                            Jordan Walden

I most likely wouldn't resign MadBum (mutual option after this year), so its a rental piece for rental piece in terms of the trade, plus we get a controllable prospect.

Our bullpen is solid, but Andrew Miller is in a league of his own. McCann provides a better bat than that of Thole. Thole was only signed to be a veteran in the development of Kelly.

The more I consider this deal, the more I like it. If we traded MadBum our rotation would still consist of:

                              Michael Wacha
                              Carlos Martinez
                              Lance Lynn
                              Mike Leake
                              Alex Reyes/Tim Cooney/Jack Flaherty/Trey Nielsen/Marco Gonzales

And the addition of Miller would make our bullpen:

                              Tyler Lyons
                              Jordan Walden
                              Kevin Siegrist

                              Miguel Socolovich/Danny Farqhuar
                              Andrew Miller
                              Trevor Rosenthal

                              And our lineup

                              Magnerrius Sierra
                              Stephen Piscotty
                              Matt Carpenter
                              Randall Grichuk
                              Matt Holliday
                              Paul DeJong
                              Carson Kelly/Brian McCann
                              Kolten Wong

                              Bench:

                              Tommy Pham
                              Jon Jay
                              Reuben Tejada
                              Aledmys Diaz
                              Carson Kelly/Brian McCann
I would save $5M and strengthen the pen and have a nasty left handed bat in McCann.

I am strongly leaning this way.

EDIT: The prospect they were offering was Nick Solak.
