Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

Loving the quick counts getting very different games now which is nice.

Something funny has happened in my franchise though through mid may I have had 2 walk off runs.

They both came from bases loaded walks lol first one didn't even have quick counts.

In a series against the rangers and in game 1 Aj griffin walked 8 batters in 6 innings including loading the bases twice. I only got 1 hit off him and 2 runs though none from the bases loaded.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

Currently 27-17 with the Braves, playing every game on HoF. Tough going at the start as the Braves have no power at all, but I traded some of the expensive veterans and some of our younger prospects to get Trumbo, Kang and Jake Lamb, who've really helped beef up the line up. I love Jake Lamb's swing, it's perfect for how I play and he absolutely rakes for me in DD and he's carried that over into my franchise.

Pitching has been a bit of a problem, especially the back end of my bullpen which has been nothing short of a disaster. 3 different guys have been sent down or gotten rid of for having an ERA in double figures. Long term it needs sorting, as does the catcher position, but AJ Pierzynski has been doing ok for now, while I'll need a long term power solution for the summer when Trumbo goes and Lamb only has one year left of renewals.

I'm in the wildcard race, but we're a bad run away from dropping out of it. Hard to know whether to push on and go for it this year, or settle for a rebuild. Players like Inciarte are up for arbitration and could get some serious prospects back for him, but I don't know how much his arbitration would cost and if I could afford to keep him. He's been the perfect lead off man though so I'm loathe to let him go if I don't have to.

Random question..is there any way to sign Free Agents to minor league deals during the season? I cant figure out how to do it. Even if I so it under the AAA team, for example, it still signs the player to the MLB roster, and I have to send them down to the minors (using an option).

The player has to take a 1 year deal (and I don't know if you can change the duration - I think "minor league contracts" set to 1 year) for a tiny amount of money. Like 80K or something.

Otherwise, it's a major league contract as far as I can tell. The only guys I can get on those tiny deals are guys that are like AA quality.

              <table><td bgcolor=#004684>All Star Break - 2020</td></table>

First half of the season is over and things are trending down for us at the moment. We are 41-48 thanks to a 10-20 stretch since June 10th. Still only 5 games back of the Tigers for first and 6.5 out of a WC spot.. But there hasnt been any signs of winning streaks happening. A lot has changed with the team these last few weeks. Joakim Soria, Dillon Gee and Kris Medlen are no longer with the team. Terrance Gore was sent to AAA and Martin Prado was traded to the Phillies for a D potential reliever.

The offense has improved a bit over the last few weeks. 4.1 runs per game since the beginning of June and 4.9 per game over the last 10. Still one of the worst overall. 21st in AVG at .252. 25th in OBP at .315. And 14th in SLG at .413. Jackson Yates broke out of his slump and retook his spot as the best hitter on the team. He leads in AVG, OBP, Runs, Hits, HR, and RBI. Bubba Starling has been the best player so far. He leads the team with a 3.19 WAR. He is hitting .270/.329/.519 with 17 HR, 45 RBI and no errors in 600.2 innings between CF and RF. Raul Mondesi is having the best season so far in his young career. Hitting .284/.346/.457 with 10 HR, 37 RBI and 20 SB. Most disappointing season so far has to go to Salvador Perez. Hit .283/.344/.485 with 32 HR last year. This year he is hitting .245/.304/.403 with 11 HR. Has been a lot better recently though and still has no errors behind the plate in 726.1 innings.

The pitching was doing great when the offense was down. But now the offense is up and the pitching just couldnt have that. We have allowed 4.5 runs per game since June 1st. And 5.7 over the last 10 games. A lot of that was from the 3 guys we released. The starters arent doing as good as they were but its not incredibly bad. Kyle Zimmer still the best we have. 4-5 with a 3.04 ERA and 106 K's in 106.2 IP. Behind him is Mike Minor at 5-8 with a 3.72 ERA in 109 IP. Michael Wacha has bounced back a bit. 6-7 with a 4.13 ERA in 104.2 IP. Still not worth the 14 million he is making this year. Jordan Lyles is on the DL at the moment. Should be back by mid august. He is 6-6 with a 4.14 ERA in 95.2 IP. Ashe Russell has made 1 start so far as his replacement. He threw a CG with 1 ER on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 12. Yordano Ventura has been the worst starter so far. 6-8 with a 4.36 ERA in 105.1 IP. The good relievers havent been as good as they were either. But still pretty damn good. Wade Davis has 21 saves with a 1.86 ERA and 0.76 WHIP. Houston Street has a 1.80 ERA in 25 IP. Kelvin Herrera has struggled a bit recently. ERA is up to 2.65 in 34 IP. His K/9 is the highest its been since 2013 at 11.38. And he is walking a career best 1.06 per 9 innings. David Huff has a 2.40 ERA in 30 IP. Matthew Strahm was recalled when we cut Soria. He has given up 3 runs in 5.1 IP since. He has an 8.38 ERA in 9.2 IP total for the season.

In AAA, Orlando Calixte is hitting .276/.332/.413 with 9 HR.Balbino0 Fuenmayor is hitting .275/.336/.415 with 7 HR. He is currently on the DL though. Starters have been struggling a bit down there. Miguel Almonte has a 3.68 ERA in 110 IP. Nolant Watson has a 4.09 ERA in 103.1 IP. Malcom Culver has a 2.67 ERA in 54 IP out of the pen.

Starters have been struggling down in AA as well. Dave Morcaldi is the best with a 3.79 ERA in 90.1 IP. The relievers down there though have been great. Jerold Kurtz has a 1.90 ERA in 52 IP. MAtthew Murray has a 2.27 ERA in 35.2 IP. Sam Selman at 2.65 in 37.1 IP and Tyler Strudevant has a 1.00 ERA in 18 IP. Robert Ulrich is hitting .299/.349/.398 with 15 2B in 201 AB. Alexi Gomes is hitting .291/.363/.404 with 20 SB in 292 AB.Marten Gasparini is hitting .283/.339/.361 in 219 AB. Rolando Cardona is only hitting .254 but he has a .342 OBP with 9 HR and 13 SB.

Season is far from over. But we have to start hot out of the break or we wont have much of a chance to get back in the race. If we dont show some fight and finish strong i might be moving on to another team after the season. Not to many guys can keep a job after getting bounced in the ALDS back to back years afterwinning 100+ games and then finishing under .500.

The NL beat the AL 4-1 in the All Star Game.

Is it just me, or is the computer just an infinitely better hitter in the first inning on franchise mode? Seriously, my first inning ERA must be over 9.00 after about 40 games, then after I get past that first inning I'm pretty much fine. They pretty much never score between the 2nd and 7th inning, but almost every game they get at least a couple of hits in that first inning, frequently a home run. It's incredibly frustrating as I really don't seem to be able to do anything about it

I don't have that problem. Computer may score a run or two, but I can usually minimize it.

Maybe a little - depending on the kind of stuff the pitcher has (is it a "good stuff" day or a "bad stuff" day)

The "unique" thing about the 1st inning is it's before all the confidence effects can kick in. Meaning that if he has less stuff today, it's when he might be at his most vulnerable. After he gets some outs, he might not have "bad stuff", effectively speaking, any longer.

Later in the game, fatigue can become a factor. That leaves a block of time where a pitcher can be in a groove and maybe shut down an offense or allow just a little here or there.

That might be some of what you're seeing. Also from a user standpoint, we don't know what a pitcher has on the ball until we start pitching. So it might be a while before we can be sure he has "bad stuff" and that the CPU hitters are jumping on it that day (sometimes they don't).

So I don't doubt that there could be a "first inning effect" in terms of results, but other than the mechanics of variable stuff and confidence, I don't think there's anything else going on.

                      Breakdown
In April, the Cubs went 17-7. The top of the order started off the season really well with both Fowler and Heyward getting on base. The starting pitching was sparkling, however the back end of the bullpen struggled, giving up some games. Pedro Strop finished April with a 7.59 ERA and Hector Rondon's ERA was in the mid 5's himself. Strop's struggles along with the emergence of Justin Grimm and Travis Wood prompted a move for Strop to pitch middle relief for the time being while Grimm and Wood handled setup duties. There were no major injuries for the month except for Willson Contreras who ended up missing a month and a half in AAA.

In May, the Cubs went 14-14 which included a 7 game losing streak from May 21st through May 28th. Strop's struggles continued, even though his ERA was lowered nearly a full point (6.66 ERA). Rondon's ERA improved to 4.15 and he continued to convert save chances. Lackey struggled in May, his ERA going from 1.96 in April, spiking all the way up to 4.42 by the end of May. The biggest loss of the month was losing Anthony Rizzo for a full month due to a cartilage tear in his knee after sliding into second base. The Cubs lost him on May 14th and he was out through June 24th. This prompted the trade for Chris Coghlan, sending Arismendy Alcantara to the A's in order to get him. I used Kris Bryant at first base for the most part with Coghlan getting some spot starts in there. This also opened up playing time for Javier Baez as he would get the majority of the starts at third base. Fowler and Heyward continued to get on base at the top of the lineup, setting up Bryant, Zobrist, Soler, Montero, and Russell.

In June, the Cubs went 18-10 which saw a 5 game winning streak, but also losing 4 straight to Miami on the road. Rizzo was back on June 25th and continued where he left off, hitting the ball well and being patient at the plate. Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester both pitched like aces in June, which helped lead to the successful month. On June 29th, Jason Hammel was put on the disabled list due to a concussion, opening the door for Adam Warren to put in some spot starts. I was actually planning on giving him a couple spot starts (like in real life) as Kyle Hendricks really started to struggle in June. Warren has been fantastic all year and he was no different in his starts. In two starts (6/30 and 7/5), Warren went a total of 13 innings, giving up 1 Run, 4 Hits, striking out a total of 18 and walking 2. He only totaled 1 win in those two starts as his start against the Reds was 1 to 0 final with the winning run being scored in the 8th inning on a Jason Heyward double. Also in the month of June, we made a move to get RP Mike Montgomery and SP Jordan Pries from Seattle in exchange for 1B Dan Vogelbach and SP Paul Blackburn.

So far in July, the Cubs are 6-4. July 2nd and 3rd in New York would be two rough days as there were 4 total injuries in those days. Kyle Schwarber was put on the DL on July 2nd with a finger injury. On July 3rd, Chris Coghlan sustained an abdominal strain which landed him on the DL after a sensational diving catch and in that same game, John Lackey landed on the DL with a finger contusion. Kris Bryant also sustained an injury in that game, but only would miss the 3 game set at home against Cincinnati, making one pinch hit appearance, which happened to be a solo home run. Schwarber is due back after the minimum 15 days as well is Coghlan, however, Lackey will need an extra week or so to return.

After Schwarber's injury, I decided to call up Willson Contreras, who was a few weeks removed from the DL. Contreras struggled in his first game against the Mets, but in his first home game, he went 3 for 4 with his first career home run. Baez wound up with the big blow in that game, a 3 run blast in the 4th, leading to a 6-3 victory.

After Coghlan's injury, I called up Ryan Kalish. After one pinch hit appearance, however, I sent down Kalish and called up Albert Almora to get some major league experience. Soler, Contreras, and Almora have all been sharing playing time in the outfield with Fowler and Heyward getting the occasional day of rest.

To account for the injuries to Hammel and Lackey, I've had a couple of different spot starters. Luckily, the All-Star Break was upcoming, so I only had to cover two starts before that. I called up Pierce Johnson for one start and he threw 5 shutout innings, collecting the victory on the road against the Pirates on July 9th. Then, on July 10th, I sent down Pierce Johnson and called up Duane Underwood for a spot start. Underwood didn't quite have the same success, going 5 innings as well, but giving up 3 runs off 7 hits. Hammel is due back for his next start after the All Star Break, but I will be using Dallas Beeler for what appears to be the two starts that Lackey will miss.

I have been trying to follow the same moves that the Cubs made as far as trades go. I plan on acquiring Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees for a similar package (Gleyber Torres, Adam Warren, and Billy McKinney). Here are where the Cubs stand in the standings.

                      NL Central
                      Chicago Cubs 55-35 0 GB
                      Pittsburgh Pirates 51-40 4.5 GB
St Louis Cardinals 49-40 5.5 GB
                      Cincinnati Reds 36-55 19.5 GB

                        May Notes
This month has been very up and down and was my first full month using Quick Counts (I loved it). We started off on a winning streak of 4 with the Oakland series and Minnesota then got knocked out of the air by the Seattle series getting swept by a team that is currently 26-25 (Were well below .500 before this series). After that we bounced back well playing over .500 for the rest of the month.

I sent down Tyler White midway through the month and called up Jon Singleton. He has been extremely up and down he will have a great series then go 0-Whatever in a series. He gets dingers but he also strikes out a lot. The biggest surprise though of the month was Colby Rasmus he had been extremely underwhelming and was at a very bad low point where he was below .220 around the Chicago series.

Then he just went on a tear starting in that Texas series, he had 5 home runs in the series (A 2 home run game and a 3 home run game, the 3 home run game was almost 4 but I was just late on a changeup that got hung up in the zone). He kept things going in the Baltimore series but has since started cooling off, still hitting home runs but the batting average is dropping quickly again.

I almost called up A.J. Reed during the Baltimore series it already looked like Jon Singleton was starting to burn out but he bounced back and A.J. Reed cooled off. I expect Reed to get called up soon but I am very happy to wait so I can avoid Super 2. I dont see Singleton as the long term option and am honestly boosting his value for a potential trade (More on that shortly).

Pitching has really started to let us down though. 1-3 in our rotation have been rough. Keuchel has really started to bounce back obviously with his stats but that is really only reflecting his last 2 starts, he just got below 3 ERA in his last start. Collin McHugh looked to be having the best year of his career until 3 starts ago. He has started rebounding but he is not a #2 guy.

Doug Fister has been very up and down he will have a string of 2-3 games where he is great then a string of 2-3 games where he is terrible. I am hoping to offload him at the deadline. Fiers and Feldman have both lost their starting jobs due to the return of McCullers and the emergence of Michael Feliz. They are both actively being shopped for prospects. They both have the potential to be 4-5 starters as well this year. They have just both had a few bad starts (More so Fiers but its there for Feldman as well).

NOW onto Feliz, my goodness gracious can this boy throw. He hits 97 on the gun with his 4 seam fastball at times. He has a 10.98 K/9 (Albeit in limited playing time) and a 3.20 BB/9. He could very easily be a future 1-3 guy for us. I am thrilled with his emergence and he is turning out to be something special. He has cooled off a bit after putting up 0's in his first 2 starts but he is still pitching amazing and is probably the 2nd or 3rd best pitcher on the roster right now (If you count Keuchel bouncing back).

McCullers has been nothing but amazing since his return, I have pitched him limited innings up until the last game where he had a 9 inning shutout win. I just had to let him finish it. Still going to keep him on short innings though until late June - early July.

Jose Altuve is back to his normal self and then some with the pop in his bat. Springer has struggled as of late, his K% is up 4% from last year currently at 28.57 and his BB% is down 6% from last year at 5.29. I am confident he will bounce back but I need him to find his power soon.

Marwin Gonzalez has been nothing short of amazing and is basically a cheap man's Jose Altuve (Has the contact and the power but not the speed or fielding). He is having easily the best year of his career and is basically the 2nd leadoff man. He may very well get the leadoff job if Springer continues to struggle and doesnt hit for the power he has.

Projected lineup would be something like this: Gonzalez-Springer-Altuve-Correa. Only thing stopping me from putting him there now is I want to see his OBP go up first.

That is about it for this month I am having a great time and loving the quick counts. Alex Bregman will be up very soon, as soon as this month even if he keeps destroying AAA. I will post another update after the draft.

Edit (Few things): Jose Altuve just hit a home run out of Minute Maid :o

Also Mike Trout is batting .240 with 7 home runs when we faced them last.

Well George Springer heard me and blasted 3 home runs including a walk off home run in a 13 inning victory.

                          Draft Results

                          CP Elvis Calderon (L/L) - 71 OVR - 81 Potential
                          SP Jeff Griffin (R/R) - 68 OVR - 84 Potential
                          C Mike Dobbins (L/R) - 58 OVR - 69 Potential
                          RP Thomas Drew (L/L) - 59 OVR - 84 Potential
                          SS Adrian Vargar (S/R) - 74 OVR - 61 Potential
                          3B Abdul Foley (R/R) - 68 OVR - 62 Potential

Elvis Calderon was a bit of a gamble for me he looked like he had all the tools to be a top notch reliever, perhaps closer. But it turns out that he will likely just be a normal reliever.

Jeff Griffin I took in the later rounds mainly because he was one of the last fully scouted guys on the board and he has decent tools to be a 3-5 starter.

Mike Dobbins, I wanted a catcher that could hit. I struck out with him.

Thomas Drew I needed relievers in my farm system I have no real prospects and I look forward to this guy being the lefty specialist of the future!

Adrian Vargas I am extremely intrigued by this guy I wanted to get him but I am so stacked in the infield but I just could not pass on him in I believe the 6th round. He already had 71 CONvsR and 68 CONvsL. Decent speed and decent fielding.

Abdul Foley I just took a guy with scouted power turns out he doesnt have much power but has very good contact against lefties at 80 already.

Vargas and Foley will likely be trade bait as my infield will be stacked by next year.

Now I did something a little bit different because I wanted the Astros real prospects I created them on my own I will now start allowing myself to move them out of A if they really seem ready (60 OVR+ likely).

SP Forrest Whitley (R/R) B Potential
SP Brett Adcock (L/L) C Potential
                          C Jake Rogers (R/R) B Potential
                          3B Abraham Hernandez (S/R) C Potential
LF Ronnie Dawson (L/R) B Potential
CF Stephen Wrenn (R/R) C Potential

I only created 6 because the 7th round pick didnt sign in real life and I figured it may be unfair to take someone from later rounds.

No real plans for any of these guys other than to let them develop then take it from there. I may lower some potentials though.

                          Question:

Since a couple of my draft picks have high overall's but low potential (Lower than their overall) does this mean they will immediately start regressing? Thanks.

Had one of the greatest wins I have ever had in the history of this series earlier today in my Phillies Franchise. Made a video of the entire 9th inning to show what unfolded. I was down 6-1 against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants heading to the 9th inning. The first 2 batters of the inning aren't shown due to the video starting after they were on base. Darin Ruf walked and Cameron Rupp singled to start the inning. The video is 22 minutes long, but trust me, it is worth watching!

Cool moment in my Dodgers franchise: Vs. the Padres, I struck out the first 11 batters I faced with Kershaw. Apparently, that's an MLB record. I had no idea.

Simmed pretty much all of the last month. Was clear we werent going to be getting back into the race. Around the end of August we went ona run and got back to .500. But couldnt maintain it and quickly fell back out. We finish the 2020 season at 76-86. Worst record for the Royals since 2012.

                                Standings

The offense just never really had it this year. We would have a few guys hot at the same time. But the rest of the team would be slumping. Best hitter was Jackson Yates. .296/.368/.515 with 31 HR and 76 RBI. Salvador Perez had a strong finish. Ended up with 25 HR and 96 RBI with a line of .265/.328/.444. Raul Mondesi had his best season. .275/.337/.474 with 21 HR and 81 RBI. Was expecting a lot more from Colon. Hit just .238/.310/.339 with 9 HR and 56 RBI. Moose had a strong finish to his season as well. .263/.341/.441 with 26 HR and 79 RBI.

The pitching was fairly good for the 1st half. But things blew up at the end. Michael Wacha fresh off a big contract put up his worst season ever. 13-14 with a 4.85 ERA in 185.2 IP. Gave up 36 HR. The most he had given up before this year was 19. Yordano Ventura had his worst season ever. 9-13 with a 4.78 ERA in 180.2 IP. Has given up 50 HR the last 2 seasons. And will be a free agent. Jordan Lyles went 7-12 with a 4.68 ERA in 150 IP. He got hurt just before the All Star break and just wasnt the same after coming back. Mike Minor was 10-14 with a 3.81 ERA in 205.2 IP. Only starter to hit 200 innings for us. And he did it for the 3rd straight year. Kyle Zimmer finally showed what he was capable of and expected to do since being drafted all the way back in 2012. He went 8-10 with a 2.86 ERA in 191.2 IP. Wade Davis had a nice season. Didnt pitch as much as he had the last few years. Put up a 1.92 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP while racking up 40 saves for the 5 straight seasons. Houston Street was a nice pick up during the season. Ended up giving us 45.2 innings with a 2.76 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. Herrera put up a 3.12 ERA and 1.21 WHIP while striking out 75 in 57.2 IP. His highest K/9 ever. And David Huff at 35 put up his best season ever going 66 innings with a 3.00 ERA.

After 5 seasons I have been relieved of my duties (by my choice) and will be moving on to a new team. I was 459-352 in KC. Made it to the playoffs the first 4 years and won the 2017 World Series. I will take a season off and then pick a team from there. Will most likely be an NL team.
