Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

PlayoffS! Nothing quite as satisfying as playing every out of a 162 game season and finally making the postseason. Really makes every pitch in the postseason feel like it could be the one to make all your hard work be for not.

The Mets finished at 100-62 and the #2 seed in the NL behind the Giants. We drew the Cubs (ugh) in the NLDS and their lineup gives me nightmares. The 2-4 combo of Bryant, Rizzo, and Schwarber has me holding my breath longer than what is probably healthy.

Game 1: Syndergaard v Arrieta. I go up 2-0 on a two run blast by Lucas Duda in the 4th inning, but that's all I would get off Arrieta. Syndergaard gave up 4 runs (only one ER) in the sixth thanks to a Duda error (Duda giveth and Duda taketh away). 4-2 was the final.

Game 2: deGrom v Lester. I go down 2-0 thanks to a Schwarber 2 run bomb that wrapped itself around the right field foul pole. An inning later, Cespedes ties the game with a 2 run home run of his own. In the 5th inning, Cespedes hits another to the same exact spot and gives us a 4-2 lead. The 6th inning brings trouble as the first two get on against deGrom. Hansel Robles comes in and gives up a 2 run double to Ben Zobrist, and the game is knotted up again. Enter Kris Bryant... exit baseball. 2 run bomb. 6-4 Cubs. I get a run back in the eighth but squander a bases loaded opportunity and fall 6-5. Down 2-0 in the series.

Game 3: Harvey v Hendricks. I get to Hendricks early and I get to him often. Through 5 innings I have managed 10 hits, but only 1 run to show for it on a David Wright single. The Captain launched 2 home runs in the later innings, and Cespedes continued his torrid postseason, going 3-4 with a double. Matt Harvey held it down and we got on the board with a 6-1 win.

Down 1-2 to the Cubs with another game in Wrigley before heading back to NY for Game 5 (hopefully).

      Playoffs Begin
      Marlins Finish with 109 Wins

Evaluating September in terms of preview of October play is difficult with how often the backups and prospects got to play, but the fact the team still finished with 110 wins is something positive.

But now the team will have to turn their attention back to the serious business of trying to win the World Series. It will start with the NLDS for the Marlins as they earned a bye from the Wild Card round.

        Marlins Advance After
        Rallying From 2-0 Down

At first it looked like a shocking and very disappointing early exit for the Marlins. Their first opponent was the Giants, and they came out firing bullets from the pitching staff.

It's not often someone outduels Damian Boeve, but it happened in game 1. Chris Reed threw 8 innings and allowed just one run to lead his team to a 2-1 win. Boeve did his best, striking out 16 in the losing effort.

After that, Alec Dugan did his teammate one better by throwing a complete game and also allowing just one run in a 4-1 win. That pushed the Marlins down 2-0 and having to go on the road.

Clay Huff further cemented himself with the team by coming up with a key 8-inning outing in which he allowed just 2 runs. The offense got going against Kyle Crick, one of the best starters in the game, thanks to Bo Winter waking up. He hit a 3-run bomb in the 1st inning and that paved the way for a 4-2 win.

The bats nearly fell back asleep in game four, but they rallied for eight runs in the final two innings to walk away 9-2 winners and force the series back to Miami where a pitching rematch of game 1 awaits. Jose Campos hit a grand slam in the top of the 9th to seal the deal.

This time, there was no pitching duel. Chris Reed got rattled and the Marlins jumped on him for 5 runs in the first three innings. Boeve wasn't necessarily at his peak performance, picking up "only" nine strikeouts, but he give the team 8 strong innings en route to an 8-3 clinching victory.

Perhaps the offense will stay awake as the team moves on to face the Cubs in the NLCS. The Cubs also needed 5 games to get out of the NLDS, defeating the Dodgers in the process. Luis Heredia will get the ball to start the series.

The Marlins bypassed Moses Bartlett for the deciding game five, perhaps speaking volumes about how little confidence the team has in him right now.

Played all 162 games, first time ever in a baseball game and damn was that a grind at times. Wrapped up the division extremely early on, finished the season ruining the Giants by sweeping them the last 3 games and knocking them out of the race for the postseason and allowing St Louis to get in instead.

The Marlins go up 2-0 in a couple of contested games at home to maintain their home field advantage.

In game 1, the Marlins got a great outing from Luis Heredia, going eight strong innings before Kevin Yaeger finished things off in the 9th for the save. The Marlins won 4-1 with Javier Baez being a big part of things.

In game 2, the Marlins found themselves down 3-0 early and it looked like Clay Huff was on his way to getting waxed. However, he was keeping the team in the game. Meanwhile, the Marlins were getting shut down, but the "just a crack" mindset on offense showed true. The Marlins got a hit and a HBP to put runners on first and second with one out. Tommy Cruz, not known for power, especially batting right-handed, hit the foul pole in right field. Just like that, a tie game at 3...on just 2 hits.

The game stayed tied as Huff settled in after that home run and the Cubs also got things under control. The score stayed 3-3 until the 6th when the Marlins scratched together four runs on just two hits. The 7-3 score stayed pat as the bullpen supported Huff's gutty effort in fine fashion.

The series shifts to Chicago with the Marlins having done their job at home. The offense is finding ways to get it done. If that keeps up, a trip to the Fall Classic might be in the cards.

Cubs Fight After Being Down 3-0
But Marlins Bats Win in the End

The home run ball showed up at Wrigley Field. The Marlins got six of them in game three to win that one in a rout. Game 4 was nearly a completion of the sweep, but the Cubs wouldn't go away.

Moses Bartlett got the start and maybe he was rusty because he blew a 5-0 lead and the two squads were deadlocked at 5-5 deep into the game. The Marlins got a 6-5 lead but the bullpen blew that. With the score 6-6, the Marlins wasted a bases loaded chance and scored nothing while the Cubs picked up one in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead and win 7-6.

Game 5 swung from the Cubs being nearly no-hit by Boeve to Kris Bryant hitting a tying 2-run HR off Yaeger to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the 9th.

In the 10th, the Marlins put it away for good as Javier Baez hit a grand slam to make it 8-4. Josh Hart poked another one out to make it 9-4 and that was the final score. Marlins advance to the World Series 4 games to 1.

"Maybe the Marlins should re-think this idea of parting with Baez, " one analyst commented.

Early in game 5, it was Bo Winter and that's it. He's been a driving force in the offense as he's been all year long. He's hitting .350/.400/.725 in the post season so far with 4 home runs. That's not the best on the team (Josh Hart of all people leads the team with 5 home runs!), but Winter has been the most consistent and usually been the spark to provide energy and momentum to the team.

"I'm showing why I'm the best outfielder in the game. I'll be humble and not say the best hitter, but I'm the best outfielder, " Winter spoke after the game, "The numbers and your eyes don't lie. I did it in the regular season, and I'm doing it under the brightest lights of the playoffs."

While there are other outfielders who are in that conversation, Winter did win the Triple Crown and he's plastering postseason pitching.

"Oh by the way. 'The Beast' is awake now. Who am I talking about - that guy [pointing at Stan Brito]. Look out, " Winter continued.

Brito has also been a big part of the playoff run. He has 4 home runs, has the most walks (6) as pitchers remain afraid of his power, and is third in playoff slugging percentage on the team. If this is a sign of things to come, look out indeed. And most of his home runs were monsters. His longest was 448 feet in, or rather out of, Wrigley Field.

The Marlins will have to face the Red Sox in the World Series, who were the AL's second best team by winning percentage.

If there's any team that can match the Marlins on the mound, it's the Red Sox. Their staff is often considered the best in terms of pure talent with a rotation full of starters scouts gush over.

"There's only one Damian Boeve, but the Red Sox have four 'mini-Boeves' and that might be their advantage. The Marlins staff is good, but Huff/Mota/Bartlett is not the equal of Ball/Gray/Wacha, " one scout spoke about the back end of both rotations.

So far, both squads have had similar postseason runs. The Marlins have a 2.71 ERA, the Red Sox a 3.00. The Marlins are hitting .300/.373/.527 as a team, the Red Sox sport a .280/.329/.465 line. So it's going to come down to the Marlins hitters versus the Red Sox pitching as a key factor.

Bo Winter will need to back up his statements in the biggest series of them all.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

Started again as I am stupidly indecisive, this time as the Rays and fully committing to quick counts. Got to say I'm enjoying using a poor team a lot more as a lot less of my team is set in stone, a lot more room for imagining what I can do to help the team. Quick counts as well have made a huge difference, almost completely changing the way I play the game and how well I do.

Anyway, first month out of the way and it's been a very strange one. We are currently bottom of the AL East with a 12-13 record, which we are pretty lucky to have. We currently are last place in all of baseball for batting average and strikeouts, but thanks to some great starting pitching and a lot of out of the blue homeruns, we've managed to win a fair few close games and then get completely blown out of the water in our loses (any time I need my bullpen to pitch more than a couple of innings we may as well just give the other team the win).

It's looking a lot like being a rebuilding season even at this stage as the team has so many holes in it, we have 5 guys hitting under .200 and we had the misfortune of losing Kevin Kieirmaier for two months in only the 5th game of the season (injured himself diving back into first after about the 6th pickoff attempt, not impressed). I made an emergency trade with the Padres for Travis Janklauski, who is a very, very poor mans Kevin Kieirmaier, but that hasn't really worked out so far and he's hitting an improbably poor .130 so far. Chris Archer is the one shining light for the team with a 4-0 record and only having given up 2 runs, while Logan Forsythe is probably the pick of the hitters with 5 homers and a team leading .280 average. Onwards and upwards I hope, but if the offense doesn't come to life then it's going to be a very long season

Chicago Cubs 2016 Early/Mid September Update

                  Cubs Clinch NL Central:

In spectacular fashion the Cubbies take the NL Central title as they clobber 14 runs against their division foe Brewers. The Cubs have amassed an insane 26.5 game lead in the NL Central with a 93-46 record on the season. The second place Pirates (66-72) currently sit 14.5 games back on the Dodgers for the second spot in the NL Wild Card...looks like Chicago will be the only team repping the central in the playoffs.

                  Big John Lackey on FIRE:

Last 4 games from the old guy: 2 complete game shutouts, a 8 IP game giving up 2, and a 7 inning game giving up 0 and fanning 8 in the process. The guy has gone from being on the chopping block at the deadline to being one of the hottest pitchers in the last 30 days. If there was ever a time for this guy to hit his stride, it's going into the post season...let's hope he continues this as we still have half of September left.

Fowler closes in on 30-30 club:

With a blast in game 3 against the Brew crew, Fowler tallies 30 bombs on the year and with 28 SB is two shy of becoming the 39th player to join the 30-30 club. Fowler's line is as follows: .346(2nd best in MLB)/101 R/30 HR/74 RBI/28 SB. It still boggles my mind how voters are favoring players like Stanton over Fowler just because the guy has blasted nearly 50 bombs on the season. Fowler is the MVP of the (tied w/ Mets) best team in the Majors and isn't getting the love he deserves...

Wild Card heats up in AL, pretty stale in NL:

The Nats and Dodgers both lead the NL Wild Card at 81-58, good for 7.5 games up on the Marlins and 12 games up on the D-backs. With the Marlins 3-7 in their last 10 it looks like the strong Dodgers and Nats will walk away with the two spots unless a miracle comes through. Moving on to the AL we've got the Mariners leading the pack at 76-63 & the Yankees in second at 75-64. The Rays (72-66) are only two games back on the Yanks and the Angels (71-68) are 3.5 games back. With the Rays on a 5 game losing skid it looks like Trout and the halo's can overtake the Rays and make their stand. The A's (69-70), Rangers (69-71), & Orioles (69-71) are down 5.5-6.5 games but are far from out.

For anyone following consistently give me a little thumbs up if you like it/would enjoy more updates. Will update as more teams clinch division's/WC~

Finally making some "hay" in the east with the Braves. My record is 19 - 15 through 34 games, SMH embrassing! I am currently on a 6 game winning streak, 2.5 GB of the east leading Nats.

CF Inciarte in the midst of a 14 game hitting streak bruises hip and is out for the month. He's been a catalyst in the lead off spot, batting .380 with 14SB. I called of CF Mallex Smith to take his spot. I also implemented the OF Matt Kemp trade. He has been doing HR, some doubles& 8RBI. 6 game stand home stand after the trade.

Fab Five Freddie has been getting it done, BA.330 4HR 11RBI. Catchers are off to a great starts both A.J. & Flowers are batting over .300 in a platoon situation. A.J. 3HR, 15RBI leading the team in that category. I also called up Dansby Swanson, but I am playing him at 2B. I still have SS Andrelton on my Braves team. RF Heyward still has no HR's, but is batting .308 8RBI, 11SB.

My RBI totals should go up. I have finally stop making those costly base running decisions.

Tennessee Smokies (Double A) win Division Championship

Our Double A club continues to roll as they are crowned Champions of the Southern League North Division. They will take on the Braves in the Southern League Championship Series. Notable players involved in this lineup are highly touted prospects SS Gleybar Torres, 3B Jeimer Candelario, & OF Eloy Jimenez.

Fowler becomes 39th member in 30-30 club

Stealing second would have been too easy for my team MVP, Dexter Fowler. So instead, the guy decided to swipe third on an outside pitch on Jason Heyward. He now sits with 30 homeruns and 30 stolen bags on the season making him the 39th player in MLB history to join the club. 40-40 on the season looks a little out of the realm of possibility, but hey never say never.

                      Pedro Strop earns 50th save

From second string setup man to 2016 all-star closing pitcher, Pedro Strop has had a 2016 season to remember. He now sits 6-0/1.51 ERA/50 SV on the year...oh did I mention the guy has 113k's in 77.2 innings? With an average strike out rate of 13.09 per 9 innings & only 18 total walks, the dude is in full control. His fast delivery and fireball speed is enough to deal with, but when you throw in that nasty slider he's a monster.

                      Anthony Rizzo smashes HR #40

Forgot to get his batting stats when I started writing this, but he just snagged homerun #40, good for a three way tie for 3rd best in the NL with Stanton and Harper. Arenado currently leads the pack with 44 and Goldschmidt with 42.

With a 97-47 record, the New York Mets are the second team in the Majors to snag a playoff invite. It's highly likely they will clinch the division within the next series or two as the Nats sit at 85-59, 12 games behind them. The Metropolitan's are led by current CY Young frontrunner SP Syndergaard who sits at 18-4 on the season boasting a 2.60 ERA and 240k's. He has also made his case of NL MVP as he moves in to second in the voting. It's not all pitching, however, that boasts the Mets...Cespedes, Duda, and Walker all have 30+ bombs on the season. The Mets are an absolute dual threat & are definitely a team we can see in a repeat of the NL Championship of 2015. Bring it on Mets...

NL Wild Card & AL Wild Card Update

The NL remains relatively stable as the Nats move up a few games on the Dodgers at 85-59, the Dodgers hold a 6.5 game lead on the Marlins at 83-60. In the AL we see some change as the Yankees are on a four game losing skid putting them out of the second wild card spot as the Tampa Bay Rays move in. They sit tied at 75-68...but the Texas Rangers are getting hot as they are on a three game win streak at 73-72, 3 games back.

That's all for now, updates will continue as we near the end of what has been an awesome season.

Chet Doyle Hoists the Commissioner's Trophy
As Marlins Win World Series 4-1.

"Honestly we might have scared them, " Winter commented, "I think the way we jumped all over them in their own house let them know they were playing someone in a league above them. "

Whether or not Winter is right, the Marlins did jump all over the Red Sox in game 1, winning 10-2 behind Luis Heredia.

And it was Bo Winter that started the ball rolling. In his very first World Series plate appearance, he hits a bomb of a home run that went beyond the bullpens. Already, the Marlins had a 1-0 lead three batters into the Fall Classic.

Shipley was on his way to an easy first inning until that happened. He then loaded up the bases on two walks and a ripped single to left that was hit too hard for the old knees of Davis to consider scoring on.

Winter didn't do anything else that game except get intentionally walked to load the bases (Davis hit a 2-run single after that), but the bottom of the order came alive with Campos hitting one over the Monster and picking up 3 RBI in the game.

Game 2 saw the Marlins figure out what the Monster was for - hitting doubles off it. They got four of them in the game while Huff junkballed his way to a 1-hitter. He allowed just 2 runners all game long while getting just 6 strike outs, which is high for him. Huff flew through the game, as he can do when he's on, using just 86 pitches for the complete game.

The Red Sox showed some fight in game 3, taking that game against rookie Robinson Mota. Slugging 2B Victor Ramirez stole the show with 3 HR and 7 RBI in the ball game to carry his squad. Mota looked shell shocked and overwhelmed though that might be expected for his first ever World Series appearance. The Red Sox won 9-4.

Boston may have been feeling eager knowing they were facing Bartlett, who has struggled all year. Well, he found his knuckleball in this one, striking out 11 on his way to a complete game victory. The Marlins starting pitching, Mota aside, really was as advertised.

Offensively, the Marlins kept knocking on the door and finally kicked it in during the 6th inning as Josh Hart picked up 2 RBI on a single to help key a 4-run inning. That would be more than enough for a 4-1 win.

That put the Marlins in their dream scenario: a chance to clinch it all with Damian Boeve on the mound in game five at home.

Winter, who was kept quiet in games 2 through 4 picked up an RBI triple to get things going in the third inning. Davis then brought Winter home, and then Baez hit a 2-run HR to cap the inning off.

Then the bats basically said "take it home, Damian".

And he did. He looked every bit the ace as he cut down the Red Sox hitters early on. He had four strikeouts in the first five batters and nine through six innings.

Jesse Winker, though, gave the Marlins a bit of a jolt. He crushed a Boeve slider into the upper deck in right-center field to get the Sox on the board 4-1.

"We were hoping they didn't figure something out against us. Sometimes, that's all a team needs, a big homer, to get some life and think 'yeah, we can get this guy', " Marlins catcher Tommy Cruz spoke.

"I went out to talk to him, told him to keep throwing that slider and all his pitches. He still has it. He still has a 3-run cushion, just throw it and don't worry about it, " Cruz continued.

Boeve must have taken the advice to heart because he jumped right back on the horse and struck out Romero to end the 7th.

He then picked up 5 of the last 6 outs of the game on strikeouts, including the final out...on a slider...to end the game and the World Series. Winker tried to be annoying again, working out a walk on 9 pitches hoping to just wear Boeve out. In all, the Marlins ace ended up with 15 K's in yet another complete game effort by the Marlins starters.

The victory successfully defended the title as the Marlins became repeat Champions. Now they will look to three-peat in 2023...perhaps with a very different lineup in place.

Chicago Cubs 2016 Franchise Update 9/18

Cubbies host their own "Future" game

The Chicago Cubs are on an absolute tear, winning 13 straight and outscoring their opponents 119 runs to 43 runs in the process. The streak began after a 2-2 split with the 1st place Giants, a sweep of the Brewers, Astros (1st place), & Cardinals, now taking 3 of the 4 from the Brewers with the sweep awaiting.

Having already clinched the division by FAR and wanting to see what my September call-ups could do, I decided to go all in. I took out every single normal starter and replaced the entire lineup with either call-ups from AAA or Baez, Almora, and Alcantara who have been my utility/sub guys for the MLB club. The average age of this lineup is 23.3 years young. You know High School sports who have Varsity & Junior Varsity teams? Well, this was the definition of a Junior Varsity team...and the results were awesome. Lineup and game stats are as follows:

                              1. 2B Arismendy Alcantara 4 AB/0 R/1 H/0 RBI/0 BB/0 K/0 SB
                              2. LF Albert Almora JR 3 AB/0 R/1 H/1 RBI/1 BB/0 K/0 SB
                              3. C Wilson Contreras 4 AB/0 R/2 H/0 RBI/0 BB/0 K/0 SB
                              4. SS Javier Baez 3 AB/0 R/0 H/0 RBI/0 BB/1 K/0 SB
                              5. 3B Chesney Young 3 AB/0 R/2 H/0 RBI/0 BB/0 K/2 SB
                              6. 1B Dan Volgelbach 3 AB/0 R/0 H/0 RBI/0 BB/2 K/0 SB
                              7. CF Billy McKinney 3 AB/1 R/2 H/0 RBI/0 BB/0 K/1 SB
                              8. RF John Andreoli 2 AB/0 R/1 H/0 RBI/0 BB/0 K/0 SB
                              9. P Kyle Hendricks 3 AB/1 R/2 H(2B/3B)/1 RBI/0 BB/0 K/0 SB

                              W: Kyle Hendricks 9 IP/3 H/1 ER/2 BB/7 K

Cubs win 2-1 following the complete game from Hendricks & insane double and triple at the plate, like what? While the margin was small, we took the victory and it was a blast. Doing this seriously hyped me for doing future rebuilding franchise seasons because each player felt like I could develop them. Don't get me wrong, bringing the biggest W to Chicago this season is still my main focus, but man this was fun too. The Cubs are just stacked and in my own little creation I did this game to show other teams what the Cubbies have for trade bait...come offseason I will definitely explore dealing a few of these guys, particularly Volgelbach & Young who both have studs locked into their positions (Rizzo & Bryant).

That's all for now. We look to finish the 4 game sweep of the Brew crew and roll on through the Reds, Cards, Pirates, and Reds again to finish the season. At 103 wins we have a shot at becoming the most winning team of all time...

                                CF: Travis Jankowski
                                RF: Hunter Renfroe

Blash has been a surprise to the lineup since being named the starter late in the 2016 season where he won NL ROY. Had a dip in average in year 2 but had a slightly higher HR and RBI output.

                                2016: .280 19HR, 59RBI
                                2017: .241, 22HR, 62 RBI

Renfroe looks to add from his rookie campaign in 2017 where he hit .257 with 14HR and 53 RBI in 122 games.

Carlos Asuaje looks to be the full time starter at 2B in his rookie campaign after a great spring. Ryan Schimpf will be the pop off the bench and backup for the 2B and 3B position.

Can Yangervis Solarte continue to be a key force in the Padres lineup in his first season in his 30's? Last season (2017) Solarte hit .291 with 26HRs and 82RBI. In 2016, he hit .266 with 13HR and 57 RBI.

The Padres rotation is very young after the veteran Strasburg featuring LHP Blake Snell and Eric Lauer, with rookie phenom Anderson Espinoza earning a roster spot, as well as Colin Rea.
