    Marlins September 2022 Report

    Standings:

The Marlins have the NL East all but wrapped up. They have not officially clinched just yet, but it's just a formality at this point. The team is up by 18 games as September gets started.

    Recent Hot Performers (Season Stats)

    CF Bo Winter, .309/.378/.595, 31 HR, 95 RBI, 12 SB, 6.9 WAR
    C Tommy Cruz, .281/.366/.440, 8 HR, 47 RBI, 19 SB, 5.0 WAR
    SP Damian Boeve, 16-3, 210 IP, 297 K, 1.63 ERA, 9.1 WAR

    Recent Cold Performers (Season Stats)

    2B Javier Baez, .268/.322/.475, 17 HR, 77 RBI, 10 SB, 1.9 WAR
    SP Moses Bartlett, 6-6, 95 IP, 66 K, 3.86 ERA, 1.3 WAR
    RF Josh Hart, .221/.266/.332, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 8 SB, 0.3 WAR

    NL Awards Races

    NL MVP:

Marlins SP Damian Boeve is on the inside track for his fourth consecutive NL MVP award. Brewers SP Eddie Butler is in second place while teammate Bo Winter is in third.

    NL Cy Young:

Boeve leads here and it would be his 5th in a row. Eddie Butler is in second place here as well with the second half of "Double Dragon", Luis Heredia, in third.

    NL Pitching Triple Crown:

Damian Boeve might lose out on this for the first time in three seasons...by his own teammate. Luis Heredia has 17 wins to lead the NL. Boeve is one behind at 16. With Nationals' Todd Justice coming back to earth, only the Giants' Kyle Crick is a legitimate threat on the ERA leg at this point. Strikeouts? Boeve probably could get none in September and still win...he's at 297...a lock for 300 and then some, barring *knock wood* an injury.

Boeve is also in jeopardy of missing 20 wins for the first time since 2019, though his ERA is on track to drop for the 5th straight year.

    NL Batting Title:

Marlins CF Bo Winter looks to break Yelich's two-year win streak here. Winter has a lot of competition, though, as Clint Fraizer is just one point behind as is Brewers CF Ryan Strasborger. Yelich himself is in the thick of things as well.

    NL Hank Aaron:

Bo Winter is trying to break another teammate's streak. This time it's Chris Davis' stranglehold on this award. If Winter can do it, at least it would "stay in the family". But Winter has to deal with Clint Fraizer again and this time Braves 3B Corey Seager is in third place and not far behind.

    Major League News and Rumors

As the season winds down, there are reports of severe buyer's remorse on Javier Baez. For a while, that died down as it looked like he'd play like the star he is rated as being, but then he cooled off again and left the Marlins wondering why they got seduced.

Baez could lead the way in what will be a further re-tooling of the team, perhaps almost to the point of a minor rebuild, on the offensive side of things. Baez is not the only disappointment in a lineup still led by the refusal of Chris Davis to decline even in his mid-30's along with Bo Winter trying to do it all as well.

Jose Campos' attempt to locked down SS has left much to be desired at the plate. The same is said about Josh Hart and his .221 batting average (Campos' is not much better). In RF, that means Arturo Gonzalez will likely be up to stay sooner than later. At 2B (Baez) and SS (Campos), it gets more complicated because the Marlins have a lot of prospects up the middle infield...but not many that scream "I am ready" when it comes to promotion to the majors. That is where the Marlins will need to embrace a rebuilding attitude to have the chutzpah to go with prospects and really lean on their pitching and Davis/Winter/Brito.

Speaking of Brito, he's continuing to get better. The walk rate has evaporated, but walks are low league wide (the Marlins barely have 400 [420] but that's still 3rd in the majors and 2nd in the NL) as the pitching dominance continues. More encouraging is his .250 batting average and increased plate coverage. That combined with his insane power could finally make next year the breakout the Marlins have waited 4 years for.

Not all is peachy on the pitching side of things. Moses Bartlett is having a career low year as his knuckleball just doesn't want to act right this season. On top of that, his stamina has been a concern, perhaps threatening to relegate him to long relief. If so, that would open the door to a ridiculously deep pitching battle for the 5th starter spot that would border on sheer chaos. I don't envy Mattingly for trying to sort that out.

That also means Byung-hy...er...Robinson Mota would move up to the #4 post, providing more assurance for the youngster in being in the rotation.

    Prospects Report

The pitching side has the most advanced prospects, by projected ceiling, but it's the offensive prospects that could be the driver of the team in 2023 depending on how the offseason shakes out.

Chief among those is 2B Jay Craft, though calling him just a second baseman is almost an insult. The versatile Tarheels product is like a Swiss army knife on the field. He plays every position except 1B and C (and pitcher). He's a switch hitter with no obvious weaker side. And he has the arm for all of those positions, and is total overkill for a 2B...his arm is elite for a third baseman, along with the quickness. He can even steal some bases. About the only thing he can't do is hit home runs.

Right behind Craft is Martin Ybarra and Kirk Jeffries. Both Ybarra and Jeffries also show versatility in the field, though Jeffries' abilities play best at 2B or corner outfield. Ybarra is close to Craft, though not quite as ridiculous an arm, but he's less error prone than Craft. Ybarra at 2B and Craft at SS could be doable with Jeffries as the utility man. What's interesting is none of these young men play 1B, so Chet Doyle remains unaffected by any of this!

Mark Morrow and Patrick Brandt are the big dogs, ceiling-wise, at shortstop, but neither are close to ready. No need to even consider rushing them with the trio mentioned above.

So why doesn't that trio scream "I am ready"?

Craft is an error waiting to happen on paper (but Brito has a similar profile and has been dynamite at 3B) and his lack of power will mean he will heavily rely on walks and BABIP. Even Christian Yelich, with his 80 hit tool, even has trouble staying over .300 with that style of play.

Ybarra's bat seems questionable at best, especially given the pitching environment in the league. His hit tool is probably a 40 - if that, environment considered. 40 hit, 40 power, and 70+ fielding. Is that an everyday player or a defensive replacement?

Jeffries has Craft's decent contact bat and lack of power...but not Craft's big arm and cat-like quickness in the field.

Of course, if the Marlins decide to leave all of these kids down in the minors a while longer, veterans Tim Anderson and Niko Goodrum are still around and always ready for the time at the show.

On the outfield side, Arturo Gonzalez gets the press but Freddie Santiago is right there. Both of these are "late bloomers" (or perhaps simply won't hit those original lofty projections). Gonzalez might be a touch better as he doesn't have a weaker side hitting-wise and has better range. Santiago struggles some against lefties despite being a switch hitter, but has a better arm than Gonzalez - and at RF, that could be a draw in his favor.

Like pretty much every other team in the league - the Marlins have precious little behind the plate in terms of prospects. They are blessed as it is to have Tommy Cruz still doing well and just 26 years old. Charles Yamazaki is probably the best prospect at the position, and he has some upside. The defense is coming around nicely and there might be a budding slugger lurking in him. Injuries and conditioning are the giant red flags around Yamazaki, always has been and is concerning for a demanding position like catcher, but that might be abating slightly.

      2016
I ended up winning the division on a walkoff home run Game 163 against the San Francisco Giants. Ended up getting swept in the NLDS by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

      2017
In the offseason I went out and picked up Mark Melancon to be Arizona's new closer. I picked up Nick Markakis in a trade from the Braves and packaged a deal sending Patrick Corbin to the New York Yankees for Carson Fulmer and Brock Holt as the three big names.

The American League defeated the National League in the 2016 All Star Game by a score of 7-3 to obtain home field advantage in the 2016 World Series.

In Phillies news, the team has made two trades heading into the first series after the All Star break that they hope will put them over the top even more and really solidify the rotation and lineup.

The Phillies have traded pitchers Brett Oberholtzer and Mark Appel and outfielder Roman Quinn to the Tampa Bay Rays for pitchers Alex Cobb and Brandon Koch. Alex Cobb will slide right into the Phillies rotation with Adam Morgan shifting to the bullpen to take over the long man role from Oberholtzer.

Alex Cobb comes to the Phillies with a record of 2-8 and a 3.85 ERA.

The Phillies add a huge piece to their lineup to solidify the outfield in one Carlos Gonzalez. He has been traded from the Colorado Rockies for outfielder/third baseman Cody Asche, first baseman Rhys Hoskins and pitcher Franklyn Kilome. Pitcher Antonio Senzatela goes to the Phillies as well.

Carlos Gonzalez is hitting .314 with 19 home runs and 42 RBI in 322 at-bats on the season.

The only other need I could see the Phillies needing to look into would be a proven lefty reliever for the bullpen. Will keep an eye on the market as the trade deadline draws closer.

Onto the first series and home stand following the All Star break with 3 against the Mets and 4 agains the Marlins.

          Boeve, Heredia Shut Down
Boeve gets 300th K but Won't Likely See 20 Wins

Mattingly isn't taking any chances with his top two horses. He's going to let them call it a season and only have to worry about maybe occasional bullpen usage to stay sharp.

"As usual, Damian [Boeve] has given us a lot out of his right arm and we are in position to let it get a bit of rest. Same is true for Luis [Heredia]. Those two lead the way for the staff, " Mattingly commented.

In fact, Mattingly will switch out the entire rotation, according to sources. Samuel Valdez, who features a knuckleball that's more like a giant, slow curve...was called up to take a spot. Andres Ordonez will get another spot. Michael Mader also moves up to the majors for some rotation duty at the majors again, and Ozzie Luis returns and will work as a starter to see how he does.

Mota will work in long relief again to give him a rest as well.

          Huff Gives Marlins a Scare
Painful Finger Injury will Heal by Playoff Time

Clay Huff grasped his hand in pain right after throwing one of his forkballs. He was cursing his misfortune while clutching his hand. The severity of the pain (and Huff's reaction) gave the Marlins visions of a miss-the-playoffs injury.

As it is, the injury is serious enough for Huff to miss up to two weeks. If any injury is 'good news' this falls under that category to an extent. Huff should be back in time by the playoffs. However, don't expect much playing time even after his return.

Well, the Phillies winning streak has come to an end at 17 games with a 2-1 loss to the Mets.

Very poor Phillies debut for Carlos Gonzalez. He went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts and made an error in right field that allowed the Mets to score the go ahead run.

Was fun while it lasted. Still leading the NL East by 19 games.

                    Marlins Officially Clinch
6-Game Win Streak Does the Trick

The Marlins have finally gotten that little "z" next to their name in the standings. That will be their ticket to October baseball and the team can focus on setting things up and getting guys some rest. Bo Winter and Chris Davis have already been among those resting up. Yelich and Baez want to play close to their regular schedules, and Mattingly will likely oblige to a point, trusting his veterans to know what they need to do to stay sharp. Stan Brito has also said he wants the full work load, perhaps still wanting to refine his budding swing against live pitching.

Many of the prospects the team wants to get a look at are still playing in their postseasons in the minors. With both Jacksonville and New Orleans making their playoffs, that will slow things down some unless the Marlins want to pull them from those postseasons, which seems unlikely according to one source.

"We did it a little to help set a new rotation and rest our arms, but we probably won't with the hitters. Let the kids get a little feel of playoff baseball and reward them for their fine seasons - and possibly a chance to say they were on a championship team, even if it's the PCL or EL champions. It's still something to be on top off a professional baseball league, " a team official spoke.

That means a head start for guys like Freddie Santiago and Kirk Jeffries to make good impressions before the other kids make their way up later in the month.

At the all-star break 2017 my Jays had to make a heartbreaking move, sending OF Jose Bautista to the Padres in a straight swap for 1B/OF Will Myers. Though Jose hit 250 with 18 HR and 42 RBI's up to the break, his 20m a year contract through 2018 could cause a salary issue in the off-season, with several key pieces such as Estrada, Donaldson, Jake McGee & Brett Cecil hitting free agency, and several players such as Anthony Alford and Vlad Guerrero looking MLB ready and due a slight raise off their league minimums. Myers is looking to platoon at 1B with Adam Lind while also seeing some time in the outfield and DH spot to make up for the lost at-bats. At 27 he is due for arbitration following the year, but we figure he will be a good piece through the post-season and should the performances of Tellez, Vlad Jr make him an accesory in 2018, he probably will hold more trade value than a 37 year old Bautista making 20m a year, especially with Bautista declining to an 83 rating already, and being a general liability at the first base position.

In other news, the last game before the break, Alford hit his 1st career homer in replacement of an injured Kevin Pillar, who is due out for another month. His first bomb was a grand slam in the 5th inning versus the Astros at home, setting the team up to win 5-3. His line for the season so far reads .230/1HR/6RBi with 6 SB and 0 CS.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

I am in year 3 and 70-51 with the A's. After being under .500 the last two years it's nice to be nearly 20 games up, but I'm partially losing interest in this franchise because of my pitching staff. Ratings wise I have the best rotation and bullpen in the entire league. However, I don't have a single pitcher below a 1.22 WHIP or a 3.24 ERA. It's a shared offline franchise with a buddy. His pitching staff with the Twins is the best in baseball. All 5 of his starters are under a 3 ERA and only two starters are above a 1.00 WHIP with his worst starter being a 1.19.

It irritates me that 3 years into this franchise I can't get any of my pitchers to have a good year. We only play Tuesday and Friday games and sim the rest so we play between a quarter and a third of the season. Last year Gray had a near 5.00 ERA for me and this year he has right under a 3.5.

I have the best lineup in baseball, but it doesn't matter when your staff is 20th in hits allowed and in the bottom half of the league in ERA. If my pitchers actually pitched like their ratings my team could have a much better record, but they continually pitch like a bunch of 3 and 4 spot guys.

Ratings wise my rotation is 91, 87, 87, 85, 82. I went through the league and averaged everyone's rotation out and mine was the best by a whole point average wise. Same with the bullpen. They just don't pitch like it even in a park like Oakland's.

I have a dynasty thread(can find in my signature below) and this isn't really talking about my team individually but can I just say, I freaking love this game? I don't really mess around with Diamond Dynasty and just have a fairly casual Road to The Show character that I pitch/hit whenever I wanna warm up. But man the franchise... the depth and the storylines I can create with the ability to write about it makes the game so frigging enjoyable. Going through the years and being able to see guys drafted grow and become respectable players. Going back and seeing prospects I've traded who I was just throwing away actually develop and become big league starters. Seeing the stars across the league vary in their future ability... Eric Hosmer teamed up with Mike Trout in mine and they are just a devastating duo right now, while Jose Bautista has kind of cratered as a star player but is still playing out his final years in Toronto as a veteran.

By far the best sports game on the market, at least when it comes to franchise IMO.

                              Chicago Cubs August 2016 Update

Overall Record: 88-44 (1st in NL Central)
                              August Record: 18-9
                              August Average: .288
                              August ERA: 3.05
                              August Series: 2-1 vs. Miami, 1-2 vs. Oakland, 2-0 Angels, 4-0 Cardinals, 2-1 Brewers, 2-1 Rockies, 3-0 Padres, 2-1 Dodgers, 0-3 Pirates
August Skinny: It was a solid month for the Cubbies as they racked up 18 more wins to increase their division lead to 23 games in the NL Central. With batting averages high and ERA low, it takes a lot for teams to match the dual threat the Cubbies can bring to the plate. We squared off against a likely playoff team in the Dodgers for a three game set, taking two wins and one loss. The loss came in the first game at the arm of Clayton Kershaw, but we rallied back and took the next & following rubber match. The next series we dropped three straight to a hot Pirates who has gone 8-2 in their last 10 and is pushing for a wild card spot. The three losses don't necessarily concern me, it seemed like the month of wins caught up to the Cubbies, we will reset and enter September with clear minds and the post season at our finger tips.

                              Batting:

                              1. CF Dexter Fowler (.349/99 R/28 HR/68 RBI/28 SB)

Fowler, my team MVP and hopefully a candidate for MVP at season's end. This guy has been nothing short of incredible for my club and is a huge reason why we have had so much success. Fowler is on the edge of being the 39th player to enter the 30-30 club...the 40-40 club is a stretch by season's end but never say never! "You go, we go" is the expression used by skipper Joe Maddon to sum up Fowler's job and boy has he delivered. September will ask for Fowler to continue his hot streak as we start off with a 3 game stand with the 1st place Giants.

                              2. RF Jason Heyward (.262/56 R/10 HR/45 RBI/19 SB)

Heyward! or Heyward... That has pretty much summed up my use of him so far this season. When he hits, he can blast a double or a triple no problem, but otherwise it has been dinker ground balls or 10 foot popups behind the plate. He's as rewarding to use as frustrating because at any moment he can knock a crucial triple late in the game (he is 2nd in triples behind Fowler in the MLB). He remains my number two guy, but his seat is and has been quite warm.

                              3. 3B Kris Bryant (.268/54 R/23 HR/79 RBI/6 SB)

Bryant has pretty much been the guy who hits Fowler in when he gets on base. With only 23 homeruns on the season so far, his power hasn't necessarily matched that of Rizzo's like we expected, so hopefully it will come around come playoffs. He has put together a couple solid games but has also struck out by far the most on the team. He has really struggled with inside pitches and can't seem to find his groove. I'm not sure what it is about him, maybe his stance, but I have struggled hitting consistently with him. When he makes contact it's good, but otherwise he just gets a short walk back to the dugout. He'll remain my number three guy due to the potential he can bring to the table.

                              4. 1B Anthony Rizzo (.276/74 R/35 HR/85 RBI/3 SB)

Rizzo, team leader in home runs and RBIs so far this season and his hot streak looks to continue. I don't have the exact statistic, but he's amassed maybe 5-6 HR's in his last 10 games including a three blast game where he single handily won it for the Cubs. Big daddy Rizzo remains our cleanup (Fowler) guy...bring on September.

                              5. SS Addison Russell (.282/50 R/19 HR/50 RBI/4 SB)

Addy has put together a nice, relatively quiet, season so far. His 19 bombs are a welcome addition to the already powerful lineup and he gets on base a lot in crucial situations. Russell is responsible for a beautiful walk off grand slam in August and a walk off single to net us two wins. At 22 years young Addy is going to be a strong Cub for a very, very long time.

                              6. 2B Ben Zobrist (.257/45 R/7 HR/36 RBI/5 SB)

The slash line doesn't really sum up what Zobrist is for this team. If I had to use one word to describe him it would be: dependable. He doesn't strike out a whole lot and it's rare for him to ground into a double play. He plays smart ball, is strong in the field, and is always someone who brings in the clutch. He's not flashy but he is our blue collar worker.

                              7. LF Jorge Soler (.279/52 R/18 HR/45 RBI/7 SB)

Soler is built like a cleanup hitter & given a few years to mature, he could very well end up one for us or another team one day. With 18 bombs on the year he's poised to snag 20+ this season and only go up from there. He remains my seven guy, but with so much depth on this roster his bat is nothing short of strong.

                              8. C Miguel Montero (.279/42 R/23 HR/60 RBI/3 SB)

Miggy has been a very welcomed addition to the hitting game this season with a strong average, home run, & RBI total) He has been durable behind the plate and whenever he needs a break I get Contreras in there. This will likely be the last season we see Montero in a Cub uni so let's make it one he'll never forget.

                              Utility. Javier Baez (.240/30 R/10 HR/25 RBI/2 SB
                              Utility. Arismendy Alcantara (.261/19 R/2 HR/11 RBI/7 SB)
                              Bench. Wilson Contreras (.190/5 R/1 HR/5 RBI/2 SB)
                              Bench. Matt Szczur (.227/6 R/2 HR/6 RBI/0 SB
                              Bench. Tommy La Stella (.195/4 R/0 HR/4 RBI/1 SB)
                              Injured. Albert Almora JR (.324/22 R/4 HR/21 RBI/2 SB)

Overall the bench has been okay, nobody is hitting well enough to overtake anyone's day spot in the lineup. Baez is my go-to utility man and his 10 homers have been solid but his average isn't great, he either blasts one or gets blasted. Almora has a very strong Rookie campaign before his torn hammy, he'll be out 1-2 more weeks and will likely take La Stella's spot on the bench and be my go-to bench bat behind Baez.

                              Pitching:

                              Ace. Jake Arrieta (15-8/171.2 IP/200 K/3.04 ERA/1.20 WHIP)
                              2. Jon Lester (10-7/164.1 IP/156 K/3.12 ERA/1.13 WHIP)
                              3. Kyle Hendricks (13-7/149.1 IP/93 K/3.62 ERA/1.31 WHIP)
                              4. John Lackey (10-5/142.2 IP/89 K/3.85 ERA/1.17 WHIP)
                              5. Jason Hammel (12-4/176.2 IP/193 K/2.29 ERA/1.01 WHIP)

Championship rotation, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Arrieta is currently second in the CY Young voting behind Syndergard, hopefully we can overtake him with a few more W's and lowering at ERA to the mid 2's. Lester has been Lester, blue collar and reliable. Hendricks has been a surprising chucker this season for us, his ERA is a little uncomfortable but with good bats behind him we can afford to let up a few runs...for now. Lackey was doing pretty poorly until his last two starts, one included 8 strong innings of 1 hit ball & the other included a 9 inning shut out...both of which did wonders to his ERA and have lowered it to 3.85 on the season, late season comeback? I think so. Hammel was a huge CY Young candidate for a lot of the season but has recently fallen off a little. He still leads the team in ERA and is second in strike outs, but he seems to be a little more hittable late in the season than he was starting things off. Either way, the dude has been huge for us.

                              LRP. Travis Wood (4-1/44 IP/31 SO/3.48 ERA/1.00 WHIP
                              LRP. Brandon Gomes (2-1/18 IP/16 K/6.00 ERA/1.67 WHIP)
                              MRP. Justin Grimm (2-1/43 IP/50 K/2.09 ERA/.84 WHIP)
                              MRP. Neil Ramirez (5-3/60.1 IP/65 K/2.69 ERA/.96 WHIP)
                              SU. Hector Rondon (5-4/61 IP/75 K/1.77 ERA/.90 WHIP)
                              SU. Adam Warren (4-2/95 IP/110 K/2.08 ERA/.83 WHIP)
                              CP. Pedro Strop (6-0/37 IP/107 K/1.48 ERA/.68 WHIP)

The ERA & K's of Strop, Warren, and Rondon is all you really need to look at. The pen has been ridiculous and our three headed monster. Strop currently leads the majors in saves.

                              Standings:

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

The Blue Jays have finally come to the end of August (1 game to go before September call ups). They find themselves with 78 wins and are 8.5 games into first place of the AL East.

There have been some injury concerns as the team lost Jose Bautista for 2-3 months with a torn hammy. The same game they lost new 2B (who has been lights out since the acquisition) Ryan Raburn. They already lost Travis for the year with a torn ACL so the depth has thinned. Happ and Estrada were also on the DL with Estrada returning next start and Happ next week sometime.

To add to things, the Jays just lost Dalton Pompey for 1-2 months with a broken arm 2 days before his pending call up to the big club. The battle for the 4th OF spot has been between Carrera (.210), Junior Lake (.269 with 2 homers), Eric Young JR. (Acquired for PTNL - has been pinch running), and Andy Burns (also backup INF). Neither have been doing much with the bat and so far Young and Burns are the last 2 bench spots before September)

The Jays decided to re-unite with ex-Jay Alex Rios on a 1 year 3.4 M contract for the remainder of the season and playoffs to provide depth. The Jays also considered trading for a 4th OF but did not want to part with anymore from the farm).

In September, a few young guys could get a look. They include, Dwight Smith Jr, Anthony Alford, Rowdy Tellez, and Hunter Doizer (acquired at the July deadline). In September, the team will test the regulars regularly to avoid anymore injuries to the playoff roster.
