After taking the first two games of the World Series the Cubs now trails the Sox 3-2. Not looking good but we get the last two at Wrigley. Home team has won each game. Season has been a grind and I'm ready to be done.
      MLB the Show - Cubs
      2015: 80-82
2016: 96-66 - Lost Game 7 of WS (18 innings to Red Sox)

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

The Marlins have found 2023 to be more competitive and challenging so far compared to last season.

The Mets are a scant 1/2 game behind the Marlins despite a 21-8 record. The Mets are 21-9 and keeping pace stride-for-stride. In fact, if anything, the Mets have been the stronger team recently, winning six straight (and counting) and 9-1 in their last 10 games.

There's been some injuries, the latest of which forced Josh Hart out for perhaps another six weeks, allowing Arturo Gonzalez and Freddie Santiago chances to get back on the good side of management. So far, Gonzalez is winning that battle easily.

Stan Brito is off to a slow start. Again. He's been heating of late, though, working on a six game hit streak, which includes 3 HR in that span. He's pulled his average up to .250 in the process after being in the low .220's.

Bo Winter is starting to slow down, and that's of greater concern. He's still batting over .300 and leads with 9 HR, but he might be heading into a slump if recent performance is any indication.

Jay Craft is another with a slow start. He's barely over the Mendoza line, and that's something he'll want to improve on and pronto. Saving grace for Craft is that Jeffries (.182) and Anderson (.158) haven't done anything either.

For hot bats, there's Christian Yelich and Tommy Cruz. The top two hitters in the lineup are both hitting over .400 to begin the year. On top of that, Yelich's OBP is a staggering .500.

In the middle of the order, there's the ageless Chris Davis. Now 36 years old, Davis continues to rake. He's arguable the hottest slugger right now, and he has 7 HR in the early going, second only to Winter's 9 on the team. Davis has a chance to reach the 550 HR mark if he can stay healthy. He needs 21 more to reach the plateau.

Bottom of the order has been sparked by Martin Ybarra. Praised mostly for his defensive prowess, he's been hitting well and coming up big in early clutch opportunities. Ybarra is batting .291 with a .396 OBP, nice totals for a #8 hitter.

On the pitching side of things, Clay Huff has been ridiculous to start the year. He's sporting a 1.65 ERA, is 5-1, and has allowed only 33 hits and 6 walks in 54 innings of work (0.71 WHIP).

Damian Boeve is has usual - hard to call it "hot", but this might be ridiculous even for him. He's currently sporting a 1.35 ERA. His K/9 rate was touching 15 at one point, but is now sitting at a somewhat mortal 12.8.

And perhaps some vindication for Bartlett is his hot start. He has the best ERA in the rotation so far at 0.99. If he's out to prove he belongs in the rotation and to keep those other kids down, he's doing more than enough for that right now.

Relievers are always hard to evaluate this early, even more so with a rotation like the Marlins as there's usually few innings to go around. Kolek is one of just two relievers with double digit innings and he remains disappointing. He has a 5.40 ERA to start. That's actually the best among middle relievers, though, which is bit concerning...mitigated by the fact they've had 7 or 8 innings.

Bigger issue for Kolek and the Marlins is that they just can't find a way to get the big Texan going in the right direction. Shifting him to the bullpen ideally would let him lean on his big time fastball, but it hasn't worked out to this point.

Same for Miguel Ramirez - a disappointing start, but only 7 innings. He does have 5 saves, but they haven't been pretty.

Curtis Anders is the other reliever with double-digit innings, and one that tends to pile them up as Mattingly likes turning to him. Anders has been superb with those 13 innings as he has 17 K's and has yet to allow a run.
"Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18

                  MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

                  (Carryover save from MLBTS 15
I've played every pitch of every game)

                  A little back story.

In 2015 the A's went 91-71 losing on the ALDS to the Yankees

2016, led to the A's being able to capture the big prize, after going 95-67 during the regular season, the Athletics walked through the ALDS and ALCS on their way to an eventual 7 game showdown with the Washington Nationals. The A's defeated the Nationals and were able the bring the WS title back to the east bay after a 27 year wait. The celebration got a little out of hand, lots of fires and overturned cars.

2017 didn't quite see the same success for the defending champions. After starting hot, the A's began to slip and the team needed some help. The midseason acquisition of Atlanta first baseman and slugger Freddie Freeman was thought to be just that. Entering September with a 7 game lead of 2nd place LA, the A's proceeded to lose 20 games and the division lead. With little momentum heading in to the playoffs the Athletics knew it was going to be hard to repeat. After slipping by the Twins in the WC game, the A's faced division rival and uber hot team the Angels in the ALDS. The series was over quick as the Angles won 3 in a row and eventually went on to win the WS.

In 2018 the Athletics were able to recapture the magic and with a major league leading 99 wins, they walked through the ALDS, ALCS, and WS losing only 2 games along the way. The great season was helped by the 4 players that had 30 or more home runs and another 3 that finished with 20+. Ace Sonny Gray earned his second Cy Young award, the first came in the other WS winning season 2016.

                  The 2018 final roster/batting order:

                  2b Dominic Costa .296/39/93
(His previous high was 11hrs, he really broke out as the leadoff hitter. He also added 30+ steals for the 2nd season in a row)

                  CF Wil Myers .299/30/80
(Myers bounced back in a big way after only hitting .273/18/57 in 2017)

                  RF Josh Reddick .251/39/83
(Reddick saw a dip in average and RBI, but saw his HRs rise for the 3rd straight year)

                  1b Freddie Freeman .257/31/84
(Freeman directly won 2 games for the A's during their playoffs, hitting walkoff HR's in game 2 of both the ALDS and the WS)

                  C Kyle Schwarber .283/24/51
(Coming over in the middle of 2017, he was still in the minors on the Cubs, he blasted 15 hrs in August and September as a call up thus earning a spot on the roster in 2018. His 24HR's came in only 385 AB's, playing mostly against righties)

                  DH/1b Gil Cardenas .259/28/60
(Even though the game didn't recognize that 2018 was Cardy's rookie season, the 20yo broke out in a major way and is primed, along with 22yo Costa, to take the league by storm for the next 10+years.)

                  LF Matt Olson .223/27/62
(Despite having a season long slump with the average, Olson continued to mash HRs during his second season in the bigs. After hitting 31 and missing out on the ROY because of an injury that made him miss all of September 2017, Olson will be another one of Oakland's young studs. If he can get that average up...)

                  3b Chris Johnson .310/15/54
(After picking Johnson up off the street, the 33yo had a career year hitting. Leading the league in BA for most the season, even batting .349 at one point in August, the third baseman slumped in September and he eventually finished 4th in the batting race. But Johnson's biggest contribution to the team was his stellar play at third.)

                  SS Addison Russell .245/14/38
(Why take Russell back from the Cubs? Because I thought that was one of Beanes dumbest trades ever, (and I really like Semien IRL) plus he never would have made it to the majors in this game, Castro is a 90ovr still.)

                  As for my Rotation,
                  Sonny Gray 18-8 2.97
(Gray won his second CY Young, finished the season with 224 strikeouts and a .99 WHIP. He was also masterful in the playoffs going 2-0 with a 0.67 era.)

                  Jesse Hahn 12-8 3.88
(Hahn finished the season very strong winning 6 of his final 8 decisions. He was dominate in the final game of the WS going 7 and giving up only 4 hits.)

                  Kyle Finnegan 13-10 3.34
(Finnegan is a right handed fire baller who routinely touches 99-100 well in to the 7th. He finished with 182 strikeouts in 199.2 innings.)

                  Michael Santos 15-7 3.87
(Santos was second in wins, behind Gray, before he was sidelined with an injury and missing his final 7 starts.)

From here it gets muddled, with Cosart and Jungmann both making 16 and 17 starts respectively, with Overton making 6.

                  Dillon Overton 4-1 3.51
(Overton was the replacement Call up for Santos, but also spent time sharing starts with Cosart and Jungmann.)

                  Taylor Jungmann 13-6 2.76
(Jungmann started the season in the pen, but after compiling 8 wins there the decision to move him to the rotation finished with mixed results. Though 12 of his 17 starts were quality his record was only 5-4.)

                  Jarred Cosart 7-9 3.05
(Cosart really struggled during the first half of the season. With an era over 5 and an upside down record, the decision was made to move him to the pen. This move helped bring his era down and coupled with some spot starts he finished the season strong.)

                  Closer Sean Doolittle 45SV 2.05
(Doolittle started the season where he ended 2017, as dominant as ever. After earning 53 saves and winning Reliever of the Year in 2017, the A's had now problems handing him the job back. As the season wore on Sean started to have chinks in the armor, including a stretch in September where he blew 3 saves in a row. Still, he was the go to closer and was instrumental in closing out Oakland's playoff run. He finished the playoffs with 5 saves and 1 blown save, that was later won by Freeman's walkoff.)

Now, let's talk about the offseason. For the most part it was uneventful. I resigned a few guys, mostly the young ones, I let a few aging stars leave for FA, like Doolittle, and traded Reddick for a couple of prospects. This left a hole in RF that I was able to fill by signing the best player in FA...Bryce Harper. Yeah I know, I was surprised too. Lol. Though I did pay out the nose for his services, 7 years 210mil, but hey you only live once right.

This finally brings us to the 2019 season. With a roster full of talent, the Athletics look to win their 3rd WS title in 4 years and cement themselves as a dynasty.

                  Current lineup:
                  2b Dominic Costa
                  CF Wil Myers
                  RF Bryce Harper
                  1b Freddie Freeman
                  C Kyle Schwarber
                  DH Gil Cardenas
                  LF Matt Olson
                  3b Matt Chapman
                  SS Addison Russell

                  Rotation:
                  Sonny Gray
                  Jesse Hahn
                  Kyle Finnegan
                  Michael Santos
                  Dillon Overton

                  Closer:
                  Akeel Morris

Oakland is currently 2-1 on the young season.

I was so mad I didn't get 100 wins last year. At the start of September I had 87 wins, so I thought is was a foregone conclusion, but I guess not. Lol
I thought about lowering the power slider this season, but when I looked at my guys, the only anomaly was Costa and his high 60's power, but he benefited from a lot of fastballs in the leadoff spot.

Yelich did that for me a couple years - just suddenly turned into a 20 HR threat.

Now he's barely able to hit 5 out. LOL

Wonder if Costa will continue to play over his head like that. Might just be one of those guys.

2017 NY Mets- The defending World Series Champions have finished the month of April with a 14-11 record. After starting a terrible 5-10, we have won 9 out of 10, including five in a row to salvage a respectable April. The Marlins are blazing hot and are sitting at 18-7.

After winning the World Series MVP, Cespedes has been tearing the cover off the ball. He's batting .311 with 9 Home runs (leads the majors) and 22 RBIs. He's been absolutely mashing. Unfortunately, Michael Conforto has been struggling since the first 2 weeks of the season. He has seven homers and 15 RBIs but his average has plummeted below .220. The best acquisition of the off season has turned out to be Coco Crisp, who is batting almost .400 in about 50 at bats. He's also taking time away from Brandon Nimmo, who has been struggling this season and is hitting under .150.

Another huge disappointment has been Gavin Cecchini. Cecchini was supposed to be my starting second baseman moving forward but he's barely batting .100 and has looked pretty lost in the field. If he can't turn it around in May, we may be looking to explore other options. On the whole, the middle infield depth within the organization needs to drastically improve.

The starting rotation of Syndergaard, Harvey, deGrom, Matz, and newly acquired Jake Peavy has been solid to start the year, and as the bats have picked up we have started to get back to winning. The bullpen has been a bit shaky as Addison Reed and even Familia haven't been themselves during the opening month, but rookie Akeel Morris has been a bright spot in limited innings. Sean Gilmartin has tested my patience and has created a need for another Lefty arm to complement Antonio Bastardo. He has given up 3 walk off hits during the first month and can't seem to get anyone out. His time in the bigs is most likely coming to an end.

The season got off to a pretty frustrating start, but we're starting to look like the World Series Mets from a year ago (who would have thought this would ever be said)

I played The Show as my only video game from release day through early July, and played every pitch of my Cubs franchise through September 19th. Then, a little burnt out, I put it on the shelf to play through another game that took me most of July and August, then got into Madden.

Yesterday, I decided to get back into the Show and finish my season, and laughed when I found that I was at the exact same point in my virtual season as the real MLB calandar.

I pitch on hall of Fame simply because all star this year is too easy, but when i bumped up to hall of fame, CPU BOMBS everything, in my franchise i give up atleast 1 homerun a game that i play, some games i win, some i lose, i still rack up some strikeouts, but the long ball is almsot killing me every game

Any advice on what to do? Just stick it out and see if my pitching gets better?

So far im 8-12 in my franchise, have given up atlaest 1 HR in every game. I put CPU Timing down to 4 and everything else default

Go back to All-Star but lower your sliders and/or raise CPU sliders?

Or if you stick on HoF, lower CPU hitting sliders? The last time I tried HoF on Classic Pitching, I had to lower CPU hitting sliders and raise my Pitch Consistency slider or it got ridiculous.
