Just wanted to post and give you guys an update where I'm at. I can't believe it, but I finished an entire 162 game season doing Manage Only Mode and I loved it. The season is over and we were able to clinch the American League West title with a record of 92-70, good for the second best in the MLB. I was able to clinch with six games remaining, so I was able to take it easy for the last week and rest my starters. We'll be playing the 86-76 Toronto Blue Jays in the first round and I'll give a breakdown of both teams before I start the series.
The real fun is that as I am typing this out, a Game 163 is being played. In fact, there will be TWO Game 163's played as both the AL and NL have ties for the second WC spot. It could have been even more complicated as coming into the very last day of the season, there NL had four teams in play for two WC spots and the AL had three teams still alive.
In the American League, the final day entered with the standings as so:
Rangers 84-77
White Sox 84-77
Orioles 83-78
The Orioles won their game early in the day, and it came down to the Rangers and White Sox. The White Sox took the lead late in the game and won and clinched at least a Playoff Berth. However, mid-season acquisition Adam Wainwright and the Rangers struggled and lost to a bad Tampa Bay Rays team.
WC #1-White Sox 85-77
Orioles 84-78
Rangers 84-78
In the NL, the standings shook out this way entering the final day of the season:
Cubs 83-78
Giants 83-78
Braves 83-78
Mets 82-79
At this I've also neglected to say that the Pirates only led their division by one game over the Cubs, so things could have gotten messy pretty fast. Unfortunately, it didn't. The Pirates easily won their game and clinched the division. The Mets also lost 3-1 to the Phillies, so their season ended quickly. The Braves were matched up against the 102-60 Tigers and had a lead late, but ended up losing 7-4. They would need some help to stay in the playoff chase. At the same time, the Giants were closing up their game with the Dodgers. The Giants were down 3-2 in the Bottom of the 8th until magic struck and they scored 5 runs to take the lead and win the game 7-3. With that win, the Giants clinched a WC spot and sent Atlanta to their last breath.
It all came down to the Chicago Cubs game in Cincinnati against the Reds who were 4th in the NL Central. The Cubs were down 1-0 early, but Chris Davis hit a home run in the 7th to tie the game. The score would stay the same until the 12th, when the Reds walked off on the Cubs and sent them to Game 163 against the Braves.
Here are the final standings:
WC #1-Giants 84-78
Cubs 83-79
Braves 83-79
In the American League, the Orioles will play host to the Rangers. In the National League, Wrigley Field and the Cubs will host the Braves. The pitching matchups are as follows:
Matt Moore (TEX) @ Sean Manea (BAL)
Jarlin Garcia (ATL) @ Jose Fernandez (CHC)
Baltimore and Atlanta will both be sending out their young lefties in hope that they can save their aces for the Wild Card Game. Garcia has pitched well to a tune of a 3.56 ERA, but the selection of Manea by the Orioles is a curious one. He has an ERA in the high 4's this year, but if they can progress, the Orioles will be able to start their ace Stephen Stransburg in the Wild Card Game.
In the next few days, I'll be working on a stat database that I can use for my franchise so I can track historical stats and advanced stats better. I'll be posting them when I'm done, but I assume it will take a bit of time. Anyways cheers!
Also, Buster Posey (TB) and Mike Trout (MIA) both accomplished the Triple Crown in their respective leagues and most likely will win their league's MVP awards, but oddly enough, neither will be playing in the playoffs this year.
