Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

I thought it would be cool for Fantasy draft franchise nuts to have their own thread and discussion.

Post your roster proudly here. Tell us your draft strategy in putting together your dream squad, update us how your doing with game stories, stats and standings.

The Matheny Manifesto A St.Louis Cardinals Fantasy Franchise!

GM Michael Sword went into the draft with a plan. Speed, more speed and a cornerstone power piece if possible. Value at pitching, young arms, veteran relief. GM Michael Sword's War Room

    Sword's Big Board

Players with () show other positions they can help out with as well.

This is a general cheat list. Obviously younger players will have higher value for long term dynasty potential. That is not reflected in these rankings. Drafts always have monkey wrenches and I draft based on the flow of what players are flying off the board and where my team sits. Sometimes it pays to take a few older veterans who can help you win now mixed with great youth.

My draft plan is going to be based on which home park I end up choosing in regards to pitching or hitting focus. After that is decided I tend to try to build up the middle first and foremost. CF, SS, 2B and Catcher are critical to being successful and making your pitching staff even stronger than it may appear on paper. So without further delay here is my big board. I will also post sleepers for each position as well.

Of course we have oodles of middle relief guy's, 4th and 5th starters etc. I am just posting the well known names for starters. I will be drafting my team once the opening day SCEA roster drops. I want to use fictional minor league players for this single team fantasy franchise. Anything goes as well as being fired due to GM goals as well. Should be a lot of fun.

Debating putting it in the Dynasty forum, but the baseball one doesn't seem to have much of a following.

Meh, i'm more looking for generally guidelines that give you best value. Like should I be picking pitchers or hitters early? How does that change based on where i'm picking in the draft ect.

Ok that is why I started this thread.

Let's talk about strategy, value, approach.

Your first round pick - I look for the best value on the board in terms of super stud all star. If a 5 tool guy is there....that is where I go always. If not the very best Ace I can grab.

I typically am an against the grain drafter. If there is a position run I go the other way. That means value will be on the board. I will also reach a round early maybe even two if I want a younger stud to put into my system. Never be shy about reaching. If your certain he will be a future all star....take him earlier than his current rating would suggest.

I build from the middle out. CF, SS and 2B (lot's of deep later round value at 2B IMO), C - Critical to long term success IMO. Fill your minor leagues with great young prospects as well in those area's. Pitching obviously goes without saying is key to winning it all. YOu can play small ball and win with great pitching, speed and defense. Hello Royals and 80's Cardinals teams of yester-year.

My one concern with that strategy of going inside out is that it's really tough to get power past the early rounds.

I was thinking this strategy for my draft tonight.

                    Round 1: Starter
                    Round 2: Starter
Round 3: Kris Bryant or Todd Frazier
Round 4: A SS or CF
Round 5: Third Starter or SS/CF
                    Round 6: Pujols
                    Round 7: Reliever
                    Round 8: Reliever

I prefer to jump on two top-notch relievers in the 7th and 8th because the run on relievers begins in the 9th. This allows you to get two top guys, and then get positional talent while everyone else drafts relievers

I was thinking this strategy for my draft tonight.

                        Round 1: Starter
                        Round 2: Starter
Round 3: Kris Bryant or Todd Frazier
Round 4: A SS or CF
Round 5: Third Starter or SS/CF
                        Round 6: Pujols
                        Round 7: Reliever
                        Round 8: Reliever

I prefer to jump on two top-notch relievers in the 7th and 8th because the run on relievers begins in the 9th. This allows you to get two top guys, and then get positional talent while everyone else drafts relievers

So I can understand that concern. If that is the case your first rounder if not a 5 tool beast or clear staff Ace should be a high average power hitter (think Abreu) or maybe a guy like Chris Davis (who hit's bombs period). However I think you can get decent value at 1B later on some cheap power guys like Mitch Moreland, Carlos Santana, Justin Bour (big sleeper IMO), Moustakis (whom I think can keep developing) Longoria who I think people are too down on.

It's a tough decision. But If can have a start of say:

                        Greinke
                        Marte
                        Lindor
                        Cain

I would be really stoked. Speed and power with a monster staff Ace. I am going to draft tonight as well. So I will post the team and round I selected then in tonight as well (plus my draft spot).

Look forward to comparing notes everyone!

Yes. I've seen him there in the late-third. Might be tough when I'm drafting with two other users tho

Ahhh that's cool. Human element changes everything. Is this an offline franchise you play locally with them? Sounds like a great idea if you have some buddies that like fantasy baseball and play The Show.
