I'll take a different approach lol. My two suggestions.
First: I say go for it, go after Archer. He's signed through 2019, and has team options for 20-21. Then I let Darvish and his injury issues walk with a QO in the off season.
Second: Stat put and make up the ground. Texas has a great roster this year and you should be able to make that up. If nothing else I might would move Gomez at the line for a little help wherever you need it.
I'll have to get back to you on a starting package for Archer as I'm in the Indians 3rd game of the season right now. I would say make Profar a piece though maybe?
Okay, here is my situation. Prepare for far too much information. I'm currently six games back and two games over .500 on June 1st. I'm looking at a few different options as I approach the deadline.
1.) Cave - Trade Darvish
Darvish Current Stats:
W-L: 8-2 | IP: 103.1 | SO: 111 | ERA: 2.79 | WHIP: 1.13 | WAR: 3.2
Wild Card Competitors: Cleveland, Boston, New York (AL), Houston, New York (NL), Chicago (NL), San Francisco, Arizona, Atlanta
Chicago Cubs: The Cubs are down in their division by four games to the Cardinals in the NL Central. They're down half a game to the Braves and Mets in the Wild Card race. Arrieta and Lester are both experiencing great seasons with mid 2 ERA's. Hendricks has a respectable 3.35 ERA, however both Anderson and Lackey have ERA's in the fours and losing records. Chicago isn't a desperate team but maybe they're open to moving prospects to get a rental elite pitcher in an effort to return to the WS. I'm very interested in Happ, who I would try moving to 3B. With that said, I recognize that Happ for a rental pitcher (no matter how good) is being too hopeful. Is there a combination of Darvish and some low level recruits I could swap for Happ? Mendez, Gallo and Taveras aren't options. However, I would consider packaging a player like Gomez or DeShields for OF help. My other interest with the Cubs is a package built around Jeimer Candelario. Jeimer is blocked at both 3B and 1B by Bryant and Rizzo so he should be expendable. Cease is someone else I like.
New York Yankees: The Yankees are down in their division by twelve games to the Blue Jays in the AL East. They're down two games in the AL Wild Card race. Jordan Montgomery is pitching in the low fours in terms of ERA, Severino and Sabathia are both pitching in the mid fives in terms of ERA. Thus, Darvish could be an instant help to their Rotation and they stand a good chance of being able to resign him in the offseason. I love both Frazier and Judge but both are likely as out of reach as Happ with the Cubs. In addition to that, New York may be complacent with their current standing given some of the talent in their farm system and how many games back they are in their division.
San Francisco Giants: The Giants are fourteen games back in the NL West and three games back in the NL Wild Card race. Currently, Cain has an ERA of almost six and Cueto is mid four. I would be interested in a package of Arroyo and Reynolds but I doubt San Francisco's motivation to make this move given Darvish may not be enough of a push to get them in the race for the World Series.
New York Mets: The Mets are eight games back in the NL East and are currently leading (alongside Atlanta) in the NL Wild Card race. The Mets aren't proving to be the best matchup for a trade as they're far from a team that needs pitching. DeGrom has a 1.27 ERA in 99 IP and Harvey has a 2.31 ERA in 50.2 IP. Syndergaard has a 2.72 ERA in 76 IP, however he is on the 60 Day DL with 55 days remaining due to a shoulder separation. Gsellman has a 4.50 ERA with 76 IP and Syndergaard's replacement Rafael Montero has a 6.23 ERA after 8.2 IP.
I could see them considering going after Darvish while Syndergaard is out but that is likely all Darvish would be. It's hard to believe the Mets would resign Darvish when they already have three top-end pitchers. The only player in their farm that really piques my interest is Dominic Smith but I would probably take Tebow off their hands for giggles.
2.) Compete - Trade for Pitching (Willing to Move Top-End Prospects)
Chris Archer - TB (Team Record: 34-48)
W/L: 4-4 | 49.1 IP | 55 SO | 3.65 ERA | 1.34 WHIP | WAR 0.7
Jason Vargas - KC (Team Record: 33-47)
W/L: 9-3 | 97 IP | 68 SO | 2.23 ERA | 1.15 WHIP | WAR 2.0
Phil Hughes - MIN (Team Record: 41-39)
W/L: 6-4 | 93.1 IP | 56 SO | 3.28 ERA | 1.15 WHIP | WAR 1.5
3.) Compete - Trade for Batting (Willing to Move Top-End Prospects)
CF Andrew McCutchen - PIT (Team Record: 38-42)
.303 Avg | 12 HR | 50 RBI | 274 AB | 5 SB | .982 FLD
1B Eric Hosmer - KC (Team Record: 33-47)
.254 Avg | 12 HR | 40 RBI | 291 AB | 4 SB | .995 FLD
1B Paul Goldschmidt - ARI (Team Record: 41-40)
.298 Avg | 19 HR | 58 RBI | 295 AB | 8 SB | .991 FLD
1B Wil Myers - SD (Team Record: 27-54)
.279 Avg | 15 HR | 44 RBI | 297 AB | 7 SB | .992 FLD
4.) Sit Still
I appreciate any input that anyone wants to provide. I recognize that I very likely can't afford many of the purchasable pieces I listed.
