Re: Do you guys get bored with MLB The Show?

You feel how you feel, and plenty of others seem to agree, so it's not so much about right or wrong as it is about people liking different things. Personally, I can't agree with boring by any stretch, but I can buy stale to a certain degree, yes....particularly in franchise and if you've been playing this game annually for a long time.

As for an overhaul, it's not that they're the only game on the market that makes it unnecessary. It's that their game is solid and well received overall as it is and, frankly, there simply isn't enough need relative to their dev time to make the kind of changes some gamers might be looking for. The foundation has been laid...and very well, at that. It's all about incremental additions and putting forth the best, most refined version of that base game moving forward.

With that, simply continuing to expand presentation, historical tracking, overlays, etc should be enough for most to freshen things up. There is still work to be done, for sure, but they've improved quite a bit in this area already. Inside The Show, multiple broadcast packages (including MLB Network integration), expanded overlays and commentary to include matchup and historical tracking, etc. The additions for 18 we already know about should only further improve things as well and, hopefully, the franchise stream will provide a nugget or two, as well.

That said, I'd personally love to see a MLB.com type of homepage with news, a rumor mill, draft profiles, FA predictions, etc...just something to make you feel more connected to the league as a whole. Game breaks/updates (particularly during pennant chases) would be nice as well. That's not even getting into my personal wish list of bigger items...we all have our things.

Really, there's a lot they can continue to do to make things feel more immersive and less "stale," but it's simply not going to come at once in the form of a new or overhauled game. I think anyone bored to the point of putting the game down 5 games in after a nearly two year hiatus is probably just not feeling the core of the game. That's certainly fine and is definitely where competition would be nice (all about options...hopefully something for everyone), though that's not the fault of this game either.

SDS isnt going to reinvent the game of baseball. Bunts aren't gonna be changed to punts and they aren't going to bring steals, assists & rebounds over from basketball. Well, not rebounds anyway. Carry over saves probably also circumvent wholesale changes within franchise mode, which is why there has to be some semblance of continuity. I think small tweaks each year is about what we should reasonably expect.

You all know they're redoing RBI 18 right? It's not like 8 bit arcade anymore but more like a next gen game. Won't have all the other modes as The Show but I think you can only play franchise/season. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

As another poster mentioned, I loved playing all the baseball videogames back in the day. I remember there was a great rivalry between fans of one game vs another.

My fav baseball game of all time was High Heat , RIP. For sim purposes I don't think anything comes close to that game. I also liked the 2K series which produced quality baseball titles for many years. The Show on PS2 when it debuted was such a big surprise hit. It was the only game at the time that used the HIgh Heat Batting Zone system while all the others used Directional.

And of course, MVP was great. At a time where nobody thought EA could produced a quality baseball game after the terrible Triple Play series, they had a good run with the MVP series.

I even enjoyed games like Home Run King and can't think of the name now but the Microsoft baseball game on Xbox that featured online play for the first time in baseball. It was a great time.

I heard the new commentary on stream it's still not great. Maybe slightly better from what I heard. If they are like showing the little things in the game then stop with the fast play feature on all modes.

They got rid of slow play where we have the option to watch all of the walk ups and all of the replays just like in real broadcast.

Also why doesn't the batter ever leave the box or show them getting ready for the next pitch in the game. After you throw a pitch the catcher throws the ball back and the batter is just motionless in the batter box waiting for the next pitch. Why can't you make the batter look at the coaches for signs like in a real game and step out of the batters box. The stagnate batters needs to be fixed. Also, when yoy hit a foul the ball you see the ball leave the camera view and swipe right to the pitcher. Why can't the camera follow ever foul ball. Why all these fast swipes still in the game. I just don't get it. Why have modes like fast and normal play when it's the same thing. Why can't we watch all the animations play out . These are just some of the things that bother me.
You sure you are in Broadcast mode? Yes it is true that around MLB 16 and 17 the Broadcast mode showed less than what it showed in earlier years. But they do show walk ups, they do show batters resetting after each pitch. It's just not every batter they show the walk up for, it's just not every pitch the batters reset on. Also if you are expecting batters to call time outs, well it's just not going to happen because it's not in the game.

I too am a Season only player and I play all of my games in the full Broadcast mode and on average my games take 2 hours to play whereas a real world game takes 3+ hours to play. For me 2 hours is still a huge time commitment but it is actually a nice balance. I am not sure I could handle batters calling time outs, I would no doubt be button mashing and I am likely more patient than many game players who simply don't have 2 hours or don't want to play 2+ hours games.

Oh and there is an bug in the game regarding batters not resetting after each pitch. It's some sort of memory leak where behind the scenes I am sure an exception is being thrown in the code preventing the entire batter presentation from playing out. But you have to have had the game play many many many games. I have seen it happen because I play a lot of CPU vs CPU on Fast Play mode for all the games on the schedule my team is not involved in. For sure you won't see it in only 5 games played. But what I do prior to myself playing one of my games after a day of CPU vs CPU play is completely exit MLB The Show but starting some other PS game and then re-entering the game which of course resets the memory of your console. This bug is the only time I have ever seen the batters not reset and you know the bug is happening when the batters do not move at all after each pitch.

Every year I tell myself I will skip the game this year. But every year SDS adds some new feature that I like and it causes me to buy the game (have bought it every year since 2012). This year it is the new fielding, base running and tagging animation improvements plus I am curious to see the dynamic crowds which sucked me into buying the game again. I have yet to finish a 162 game season where I have played every game (even though every year I say this year will be different ... LOL), as I usually burn out once the dog days of summer kick in, the weather outside in the real world is nice and I go off and do something else with my time. But I certainly don't get bored after 5 games. MLB The Show is not perfect. It has it's warts, but it's not the same game every year. This is one of the few sports games where small game play improvements are made every year.

I literally got bored after the first 5 games. What does Sony need to do to make MLB fresh? It's not adding rain delays and it's not making the crowd attendance react to what's going on the field . I believe it's just that the game is stale now. Don't get me wrong it's a beautiful game but Sony never really adds anything to make the game seem fresh.

I think Sony needs to start fresh and build a whole new game. Of course Sony won't do that because they don't need to because it's the only game on the market. But from my view point the game is getting stale and boring.

I am not knocking the game by any means but Sony for me to buy your baseball game you can't just make little upgrades year ater year. I know I will get crap for giving my point of view. Again, I am not knocking the game at all. Thank God Rynolds is not in 18. He was terrible in 17. Matt Vasgersan has to go. He makes the game boring lol. Get rid of Vasgersan for next year please lol.

Can I just ask people in this forum if I am right or wrong that the game gets boring after a while? I don't even play a whole season and I love baseball games. I think Sony needs a competitor in the baseball areana so they have competition. Tell me what you guys think?
Your not off base for feeling that way. The Show is an incredibely deep game but it's presentational approach to the sport is on the dry side and can be monotonous at times. Your interest in baseball should not be questioned because of it.

Through the years when we had ample choices in baseball games there were some I gravitated to more because they sucked you into the experience. It's hard to put a finger on it but each developer had their own interpretation and style on how they presented the game. High Heat, MVP and 2k were not necessarily better games but they had a fun factor. In some instances the Show over simulates and loses some of that fun factor in the translation.

Oh and there is a camera mode in the game that does follow every play from start to finish without cutting away to some other cut scene meaning you will see each and every foul ball and I remember a couple of years ago people were complaining that fans were not catching foul balls even though SDS said they added it into the game. But thanks to this camera mode, I could confirm that the fans were catching or at least attempting to catch foul balls.

So what is this mystery camera mode? Well you have to be one of us weirdo Manage Only Mode gamers and the camera mode is the "Dugout" camera. It's not the perfect camera for seeing where every pitch was located. But hey I am not the pitcher, I am not the batter. I am the manager sitting in the dugout watching the game and making decisions managers make to help influence the game. To some people this may seem boring. But to me I enjoy the mode. Sure I am not pitching, hitting and fielding the ball. But I still make decisions in the game that do influence the final out come and as mentioned, I do not miss anything in each play from the dugout. I see the entire play transpire from the pitch, to the hit, to the fielders handling the ball, or the ball being hit foul into the stands where some fan catches it. Plus if I feel I need a better view of what just happened, thankfully I can use replays.

Unfortunately the long grind of a baseball season does burn me out. But a 5 game sprint does not bore me.

No I I used to post on these forums years ago . Just haven't had time in the last year's. I played MLB 16 and 17. My buddy had 16 and for me it wasmt worth picking up. I understand they only have 9 months development time and there is only certain things they can implement for next years game. My philosophy is Sony won't make this game perfect because if they did no one would buy next year's game. I know this game isn't perfect and I wasn't knocking the game as a whole. But if NBA2k can do it in a 9 month cycle why can't MLB The Show?

Sales are going to dictate how big your development team is going to be.. 2k has big volume and is able to support a bigger team and get more done in the same time period.

Are you kidding me? SONY is way bigger then 2k. Sony has way more people on their development team them 2k ever had. It has nothing to with sales dictating how many people work on MLB. No way no how . I am sure Sony's team is alot bigger then 2k sports. If Sony was a 3rd party company then yes sales would dictate the development team but not like a company of Sony's stature.

You have to look at it as the size of San Diego Studio, not Sony. Plus the Show's sales pale in comparison to NBA2K

Asking you if you really are a baseball fan isn't "knock"(ing) you. It's a serious question. Looking thru these threads there are a TON of criticisms of this game. Most of it appears to be over certain modes, or something "missing" from the game (some has to do with game play problems that some say exist and others say they don't see it), but there are a lot of complaints about this game. Don't see much positive posted about the game.

After a two year hiatus (as you say), it's a bit questionable how the game would get stale after five games? Not quite getting that they haven't added anything. Geez, we burden them with "add this", "add that", "this color is awful", "how come.....", etc. They do a fairly good job I think.

I was playing a game today and am sort of amazed at how much fun this game is and everything it has to offer. What a wealth of options, and it appears the presentation is getting a boost this year (especially like what they've done with create-a-player).

I don't think it's fair to ask him if he's a baseball fan. I mean I'm a metal fan but I don't like Slayer, that must mean I'm not legit cause I don't like one of the most overrated bands of all time heh.

Anyways, baseball fans are a huge group of people, everyone gets different things from the RL game, just like they would The Show. I can see the points about the presentation being stale, and it is a bit of an adjustment period moving from 15 or 16 and going to 17. I don't especially like 17, at least not the gameplay so much. If you get into bells and whistles yeah there are some additions there that are kinda cool in the various modes, but the gameplay, eh it just feels off a little bit.

Sounds to me like this dude is just here simply for the gameplay and doesn't really dig it. In 17 specifically, I can't blame him too much for that, every game feels the same to me too in this version because of the catcher issues and how the AI manager uses the bullpen and other things. If you have some pretty glaring issues like that, it can easily and quickly start to feel like groundhog day.

Is the non - first party ban off MLB games now? If there is no ban I m not sure companies feel like a baseball game is a good investment.

There are no exclusive baseball game license agreements right now. 2K had the only one and they don't make a game right now.
