Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Damn, I feel like I have a problem sticking with one Franchise.. haha.

Last update I had posted was me working through a dual Yankees/Padres chise.

With the release of OSFM 4.0 after the deadline, I decided I wanted to take on a 1-team rebuild and focus more specifically on that. (Plus, the Yankees are stacked and I've played enough games as them - pretty easy to put up 7-8 runs a game with that team, even with competitive sliders )

So, I've started up a new, main franchise for myself, with the Chisox. Not the most difficult rebuild at all, but there's some fun flexibility here and its a team I've been wanting to check out, and I like their aesthetic (jerseys and stadium).

I ended up simming all of 2018 just to get started in 2019. The big FA moves I made were bringing back Nate Jones as closer (might have traded him during the regular season, but I figured I'd want him to help stabilize the back end of the bullpen) as well as Xavier Cedeno and Luis Avilan - all over 80 ovr with the plan of making the pen a good piece of my team. I also signed Josh Harrison on a two year deal. He's a player I've always liked, and his versatility in playing multiple positions will be supremely helpful for us.

The goal - I'd like to be surprisingly competitive for 2019, despite only winning 67 games in 2018.

Other notable Free Agents: Brian Dozier re-signed with the Dodgers, but Machado ended up going to the Nationals, who lost out on Harper to the .. Blue Jays! They were a wild card team in 2018 and it looks like they want to keep things up for the near future. (With that said, Donaldson, who had a great 2018, went to the Mariners on a 5 year deal).

My lineup was actually a Top 10 offense in 2018 - good years from Luery Garcia, Jose Abreu, Wellington Castillo, and Yoan Moncada helped with that. It was really the pitching that was the Achilles heel -

With that said, my lineup heading into 2019:

    2B Nick Madrigal (R) 74 Ovr -
    3B Luery Garcia 77 OVR
    1B Jose Abreu 83 Ovr
    C Wellington Castillo 80 Ovr
    DH Yoan Moncada 86 Ovr
    RF Avisail Garcia 80 Ovr
    SS Tim Anderson 82 Ovr
    LF Josh Harrison 79 OVR
    CF Adam Engel 75 OVR

Not bad .. but the pitching staff is the bigger Q, although these guys all have either B or A potential

    SP Carlos Rondon 82 OVR
    SP Lucas Giolito 79 OVR
SP Renauldo Lopez 77 OVR (someone I have my eye on - he was terrible last year. He's on a short leash).
    SP Carson Fulmer 70 OVR
SP Alec Hansen 70 OVR (R)

I'm keeping Kopech in the minors for now at AAA. He's a 68, but he has the lowest stamina of the group. I also drafted a stud SP, Brady O'Quinn (lol) in the Draft in 2018. He's 21, a 66 OVR with A potential.

The system is really loaded with young pitching, but theyre all prospects... we might be a year or two a way.

But honestly, with doing carryover saves, you can see some of the head scratching moves playing out and paying off for clubs. Plus this year, the cpu teams seem better at balancing their rosters.
Yeah, I agree that the AI this year is a better at building out a team. There are some moves that probably wouldnt happen in real life necessarily, but overall its more fun than not to see what they get up to.

The O's travelled to Houston for their home opener where Alex Cobb was given the task to slow down the unbeaten Astros lineup.

The first six innings were a scoreless pitching duel with Cobb and Morton going at it until Adam Jones popped a two run HR over the right field wall. Cobb pitched himself into trouble in the 7th inning, when he walked the leadoff guy then allowed a single to shallow centre.

With his pitch count only at 82 pitches Shoalwater entrusted him to pitch himself out of trouble. Fatal mistake as Brian Mcann took a 1-2 pitch to deep right for a three run blast.

The O's bullpen was a tired looking mess after the battle with the Twins in the previous series so Cobb was replaced by long reliever rookie Jimmy Yacabonis. who retired the side in order thanks to a huge diving catch in centre by Austin Hays which would have cleared the bases.

Heading into the 8th Tony Sipp the astro's SU guy got a one-two-three in order. With the scores 3-2 Baltimore called upon their closer, and prime offseason acquisition, Kyle Barraclough.

Who proceeded to give 6 runs and turn a close game into a 9-2 blowout.

Baltimore move to 2-2 on the season with both losses due to the bullpen struggles.

The task doesn't get any easier as the next sees Verlander take on the historically bad Andrew Cashner.

          SEATTLE MARINERS UPDATE #1

So I have just finished drafting 30 team control and doing all 90 rounds for all the teams. Took a bit of time, but it was really worth it. Overall this has been my favorite team I've ever drafted, and this is the one I will be sticking with from now on. Now it's time to make sure all the teams have the best 40man roster possible. How I do the 40man rosters for all the teams is 10 SP, 10 RP. 4 catchers then 8 infielders and 8 outfielders. Then I add everyone to the MLB team and let CPU take over for the other 29 teams after that.

I play on All-Star hitting/pitching. I use directional with classic and auto fielding. I use these because it creates the most realistic game possible IMO. I use my own sliders I have created from scratch.

My next update will be later today and I'll show my 40man rosters with top 10 prospects.

            SEATTLE MARINERS UPDATE #2

            SPRING TRAINING

so before I've even played one game I wanted to make some minor moves to shore up depth and some bench pieces

            Trade #1

            Indians Received:
            SP Jordan Guerrero (C)
            1B Tommy Joseph (B)

            Mariners Received:
            1B Edwin Encarnacion (B)

It was pretty a swap of DH pieces who are very similar in Encarnacion and Joseph. Joseph has 5 years of control with Encarnacion 2 years. Made this deal because I needed a little more pop in my lineup (and just like Encarnacion lol)

            Trade #2

            Red Sox Received:
            CF Lolo Sanchez (B)

            Mariners Received:
            LF Jose Bautista (B)
            RP Drew Storen (C)
            CF Braden Bishop (C)

I wanted Jose Bautista because he plays multiple positions and brings pop for a cheap price. All 3 players Mariners received were buried on the Red Sox depth Chart and have potential to make impact for the Mariners.

            Trade #3

            Orioles Received:
            SP Jamie Callahan (B)

            Mariners Received:
            1B Adrian Gonzalez (C)

Adrian Gonzalez is a possible bench piece or depth for the Mariners. On a one year contract it was a good deal for both sides as Callahan has good potential to a bad roster of mostly C and D potentials on the Orioles.

            BIG TRADE ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            Trade #4

            Royals Recieved:
            3B Mike Moustakas (B)
            CF Luis Robert (A)
            SS Javier Guerra (C)

            Mariners Received:
            3B Josh Donaldson

I had really good depth in CF with having Victor Robles ahead of Luis Robert. Guerra has high C potential in a weak SS position for the Royals. And Moustakas and Donaldson are both on 1 year contracts. I made this deal because Donaldson has great defense but also brings more pop, a little more contact and more speed to a very versatile lineup. After making this deal I have a very very good middle of the order.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Wanted to share the franchise I just started with fantasy draft and talk a little bit about strategies. After a couple tries with The Show 17 and then a 1987 run with 18, I feel like I learned a lot about how some of the things worked, so I came up with a plan to start out a present day fantasy draft.

A quick note about how I do my franchises. I do a lot of simulating and a lot of the quick manage mode, where I actually make every decision on every at bat. I never pitch/play defense (always go to quick manage), though I occasionally step in to hit for a game or at least key situations. I would say 1 out of 3 games I hit at least an inning, but still almost all quick manage. I like the quick manage because I love a quick moving franchise, 162 games seems like FOREVER if you're playing every inning, but if I quick sim games without even managing I feel like the team gets away from me...I don't really feel involved enough and my players don't seem to develop the way I want them to.

So anyway, my entire strategy for my present day franchise centered around morale and around getting bargain contracts. I did a ridiculous amount of research and scouting to try to come up with a gameplan round to round what I wanted to pick, and I spent pretty much a whole day on the actual draft, only to realize what I probably should have done is just drafted the best available player each round and then TRADE for the actual players I want. Anyway...

I went with Correa in round 1, pick 7. Young, very long contract, and a ridiculous bargain at about 2 mil. Next I went Freeman (my only big contract), then Hoskins. After the draft and a flurry of trades, I started the season with this lineup:
                    CF Pollock
                    RF Haniger
                    SS Correa
                    1B Freeman
                    LF Hoskins
                    3B T.Frazier
                    DH Trumbo
C Gattis/J.McCann (the same platoon the 'Stros won the world series with)
                    2B Phillips/Escobar

Pillar as my 4th outfielder, and Pirela utility round out the hitters.

                    My rotation is:
                    Stroman
                    Mikolas
                    Nelson
                    Leake
                    Skaggs

and my bullpen is led by Edwin Diaz closing (had to trade for him) with the following relievers: Marco Gonzales (6th starter long reliever), Nick Vincent, Runzler, Colome, Bleier, Osuna.

I also went a bit overboard on MLB level guys, getting several guys I thought were platoon worthy or injury fillers, so right now in the minors I have: Gurriel, Marwin Gonzales, Pina (good hitting catcher), Hernan Perez, Torreyes, Gaviglio, Pazos, Span.

I also loaded up on top prospects, basically any round after about 20 that I didn't see a key guy I wanted, I'd look for a top 50, and after that, I'd look for at least b potential. I think I actually drafted through about 60 rounds before I finally let the auto draft take over. My key prospects are:
Allard, Sheffield, Faedo, B.Lee, Chavis, Baez

I forgot to mention a key component to my whole gameplan...I picked the Oakland A's, I wanted to challenge myself to stay within a tight budget, but it also goes back to that morale piece...I'm picking up as many players from California as I can. For my international guys, I'm trying to make sure they've got a compatriot to keep them happy, too.

My weaknesses are glaring, 2nd base I've got a solid hitting trio of Phillips, Escobar (actually a SS but I platoon him 2b), Pirela, but none of them are great on D. Similarily on 3b I've got Todd Frazier, couldn't resist that 99 power against lefties but he's really not a full time worthy 3B. Also my starting rotation is basically 5 equal guys, no clear ace and not even a clear rotation. After my first 15 games, I literally reversed the order of the rotation because that was the order of how well they were doing so far (IE Stroman totally blew while Skaggs excelled.)

So I'm really considering another big trade soon...I'd like to package a regular with a couple A prospects and get an ace (Syndergaard, Paxton, Degrom?), an every day 2b stud (Baez, Muncy, Lemaehieu, Merrifield?), or a 3b upgrade (Turner would be awesome, but Sano or Seager are probably more realistic).

I won my first 5 games, then went on a bit of a skid. I'm now through 20 I believe, at a solid 13-7. As expected, my hitters are tearing it up, but my pitching is getting teared up.

                    Thoughts, ideas?

I didn’t feel like playing today, but glad I ended up getting in a game. Cubbies beat the Reds 3-2. We actually had and injury. My catcher Herb Fuentes gets a major hand injury sliding into home. I’m fearful and excited at the same time to have an added challenge down the stretch but turns out he is only out for a day or two. Still a big loss right now. We’ll see if Jose Lobaton can get it done. He had been mediocre most of the season but his batting average has been coming up recently.

Cardinals beat the Dodgers again. They have won like 5 in a row and we still sit 2.5 back. 15 to go, right now we would be facing the Rockies in the WC. The last 3 games of the season be the Cards will be very intense if we manage to keep pace.

EDIT: Almost forgot, Rizzo hit his 65 dinger of the year. Can’t complain about his pace since the last I looked he was 99 power right and I think 98 power left in my carry over.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Greg Rivera extended his hitting streak to 20 games in style with a 3-run home run in his first at-bat in the first inning.

Those runs would be all the Marlins got until the fourth when Brito came up with an RBI single.

Morales struggled, but batted his way through the fifth with three runs allowed, including a 2-run line shot to the left-field corner.

But the Marlins bullpen showed what they can do when they are on. New face Delgado, who came over in the Winter trade, struck out six of the seven batters he faced. That one batter who put the ball in play got a leadoff triple, and then he struck out the next three batters. This after striking out the side in his first relief inning as a Marlin.

From there, Curtis Anders struck out the side in his outing, and then Miguel Ramirez struck out three with a walk mixed in to end the game and notch his 24th save.

                          In all, the Marlins bullpen's line: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 12 K

                          The Marlins won 4-3.

"We missed our chance in the 7th. I still can't ******* believe we got a lead off triple and not one damn ball put in play after that, " the Mets manager commented.
"Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18

With my #5 starter on the DL for over a month and the trade deadline a few days away, I let nostalgia get the best of me and I swung a deal with the Rangers to bring Bartolo Colon back to the Mets

                              GAME 2

Cleveland Indians (0-1) vs Seattle Mariners (1-0)

Josh Tomlin absolutely DOMINATED the Mariners. Going 9 innings with 6K, with only 1BB and 4hits.
Carlos Martinez was good 1 second and completely lost the next second. He still managed to go 7 innings giving up 11hits, 3ER and 9K.

                              Cleveland:

                              DH J. Aguilar 2-4
                              1B L. Morrison 2-4 2B, RBI
                              C R. Martin 2-4 2B, RBI
                              2B N. Senzel 2-4
                              SS J.Crawford 1-4 RBI, SB

                              Seattle:
                              CF D.Gordon 0-4
                              RF C.Taylor 2-4
                              1B E.Hosmer 0-4
                              3B J.Donaldson 1-4
                              LF M.Ozuna 0-4
                              DH E.Encarnacion 0-3
                              2B N.Walker 1-3
                              C T.Barnhart 0-2 BB
                              SS J.Hardy 0-2 SAC

As you can see I couldn't get anything going, Tomlin was a strike throwing machine and I was always behind in the count. Well on to the series finale
