Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

First series complete for each team. Rockies win the series 2-1 against the Diamondbacks, while the Indians get swept in Seattle.

Injury report: LRP Josh Tomlin for the Indians went down with a fractured wrist in the series finale against Seattle. He will be our 1-2 months. A real bummer!

I decided to recall SP Ryan Merritt from Triple-A Columbus to take Tomlin's spot in the LRP role out of the bullpen.

No injuries as of yet for the Rockies. Injuries (DL stints) thus far already around the league are as follows:

    - NYY 2B N. Walker out 1-2 months with a torn finger ligament.
    - NYY SS D. Gregorius out 1-2 weeks with a pulled hamstring.

-MIN CF B. Buxton out 1-2 months with a broken hand.

-NYM C K. Plawecki is out 1-2 months with a fractured shin.

Mets already without Catcher Travis d'Arnaud for this season with his tommy john surgery so depth at that position already being tested.

Like I said in my first post, those who are out for season to begin the year irl are also out for the season in my franchise. At least the ones I know about...and a few other prolonged injuries like Bumgarners, which isn't out all season but will miss significant time. Those players like that also started my franchise season on the DL for however long they are expected to miss irl.

What I also do is manage who to call up and down for MLB only injuries. I turn injury management to MLB only to get the notifications for all teams in order to do this.

Sometimes the AI will call up guys that doesn't make sense with the positional player injured.
It's easier just to do it myself and takes no real effort or time to do. Also this way, I feel more engaged and informed within my franchise around the league.

I like knowing who's injured and what guys have been called up etc. That way when I play against them I understand where so and so is and why so and so is in their lineup instead.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Finished the first season in my Rays franchise with a 71-91 record, which put us in last place in the AL East. You don't lose 91 games by only being bad in one area, but honestly our hitting was beyond atrocious. Our highest batting average was .285 by Austin Barnes. Our high HRs was Brad Miller, with 16. With that being said, there were some bright spots to our team. Mallex Smith was 2nd in the AL in stolen bases. Jacob Faria and Chris Archer were 1 and 2 in the AL in ERA (I have NEVER had that before). Alex Colome was pretty much automatic in save situations. He just didn't have enough of them.

With those bright spots and the offensive struggles in mind, I went into the offseason with a plan to let the high strikeout/low OBP guys walk and hit the reset button on the offense. Here are the moves I made:

      Key players I let walk:
      Brad Miller
      Wilson Ramos
      Carlos Gomez
      CJ Cron
      Matt Duffy
      Nathan Eovaldi
      Sergio Romo

      Key signings:
      Jon Jay
      Lance Lynn
      Trevor Rosenthal

      Other transactions
Added OF Jabari Blash for depth
Selected 1B Tommy Joseph in the Rule 5 draft
      Traded for 1B Jon Singleton

With the offseason finished, I'm set to begin Spring Training. Here is a quick overview of what to look for:

      Positions that are definitely filled
Catcher - Austin Barnes is my guy this year, no doubt about it.
LF & CF - Mallex Smith and Kevin Kiermaier have those spots sewn up
Ace and #2 guy - Chris Archer and Jake Faria are my top two for sure
Closer - Needless to say Alex Colome is the closer

      Positions up for grabs
First Base - Tommy Joseph, Jon Singleton, Jake Bauers, Brendan McKay will all fight for this spot

2B/SS/3B - Hechavarria has one of them for sure, just not sure which one yet. The other two spots will be two of Willy Adames, Christian Arroyo, Daniel Robertson, Micah Johnson, Rob Refsnyder, or Kelvin Gutierrez

Right Field - Jon Jay, Jabari Blash, Justin Williams, Denard Span and Rob Refsnyder will battle for this 3rd OF spot

#3 through #5 in the rotation - Lance Lynn, Matt Andriese, Ryan Yarbrough, Blake Snell, Brent Honeywell, and Jose De Leon will compete for these three spots.

I'm excited to get the 2019 season going. No big names added to the roster, but we will get to see which prospects will start to separate themselves. I'll update you guys when Spring Training is over

Funniest thing, made it to the World Series against the Cubs. Forced game Seven, where Pujols hit a walk-off two run shot down 1. During the season he had also done pretty well (.260, 17 bombs) while splitting time at first and DH. He then retired in the off-season, which surprised me, although it was cool for him to retire on such a high note.

Tyler Anderson was very good! He went 7 innings, giving up only 3 hits, no runs, 4 walks, and 4 strikeouts.

We shut out the D-backs 4-0 in a very well played game. Biggest threat came in the 9th as McGee gave up a hit to lead off the inning. Somehow got Goldschmidt to pop it up for 1 out. Then a great base hit saving DIVING stop by LeMahieu for the 2nd out. And the last out was a deep fly ball that Ian Desmond caught literally at the wall reaching up a tad above the yellow homerun line!

Next up: Rockies have a 4 game series @ San Diego and the Indians are on the road for a 3 game set @ Angels. Again, I will be playing only one game per series for each team, having my random number generator app decide which game of the series to play. For these I will be playing oddly enough the final game of each series.

Here is the box score and pitching stats:
3 game series with the Angels on the road for the Indians. First two games split and I am played the rubber match. It was Corey Kluber vs Garrett Richards, so on paper this was a great pitching matchup.

That ended quickly in the top of the first as I hit back to back homeruns with Ramirez and Encarnacion to make it 3-0. The announce crew announced it was his 350th career homerun which was cool.

I ended the game routing them 10-1 hitting SIX homeruns as a team. The big story was Encarnacion becoming only 19th player in MLB history to hit THREE homeruns in one game!!

I crushed two solo shots off of Richards. And then a 3 run bomb to left in the 8th against Alvarez. I've never have accomplished this feat in this game all these years so it was awesome. Also 6 homeruns in one game is a personal record for sure!

Kluber pitched good but certainly not dominant. I walked 5 and struck out 7...those walks forced him to get out of a couple tough jams. I did strikeout Trout three times though which was crazy lol.

Anyways the Indians take the series, feels good after being swept in Seattle. Now on to a nice long 10 game homestand, starting with KC coming to opening day in Cleveland.

As for the Rockies....they lost the first two of a four game series against the Padres on the road, 6-11 and 4-5. We won the third game in a high scoring game, 15-14!

The next game I will play is the series finale in San Diego as we look to end the series in a tie 2-2. Pitching matchup will be lefty Tyler Anderson vs lefty Clayton Richard. Both pitchers went at least 7 innings in their first start winning both games so it should be a good one!

Here is the box score and pitching stats for the Indians and Angels series rubber match:

This is awesome. Are you starting Zagunis full time while Heyward is out or is Almora/Happ getting most of the time?

Just had one of the best games of The Show in franchise I’ve had this year. Yankees Vs Red Sox, Tanaka Vs Sale at Yankee Stadium. A pitchers duel. Managed to get one early on a sac fly from Judge. 7 innings of one run ball from Sale. 6 shutout innings from Tanaka. Fast forward to the 9th, Chapman comes in to close it out but JDM launches a game tying solo shot into the seats forcing extra baseball. 3 scoreless innings from both sides later, Joe Kelly enters the game for Boston. 0-1 count on Judge to lead off the inning. Next pitch he blasts it 451 feet deep to left. See ya! 2-1 Yankees win in 13 innings.

Player of the game Aaron Judge. Hitting the walk off bomb off of Joe Kelly made it that slight bit sweeter after what happened irl recently.

Maybe this belongs as it's own topic but I was wondering....
I am someone who plays Franchise mode, takes a bad team and tries to rebuild them. However, I do not play fake fantasy where I trade for current MLB studs and try to make the playoffs my first season. I try to do it as realistically as possible. I make trades but usually wait until the deadline and see what teams need first. I almost always only get prospects in return.
I do 30 team control and will trade players from other teams if they are in rebuild mode and the trades are fair as well.

I try to draft well. I try to make the rebuild (like my current Marlins) as realistic as possible.

I've seen some YouTube videos of people showing there franchises but they all seem to following the "get studs now" method. Are there any people that you follow that do it similar to me? Do any of y'all have a YouTube channel worth checking out?
                      thanks!

Check out JerseyBorn and Moonlightswami. Moonlightswami is more well known in the Madden community but he does play his franchises realistically. The Show franchise is the core series on JerseyBorns channel. He plays very realistically as well.

Just a tip, if you check out JerseyBorn’s channel, don’t act like a fool in the comments. If you do, well, you’ll see the type of reply you get. But yeah, watching franchises on YouTube is mostly pointless, very few on their care about realism and pretty much just rip off the CPU left and right, that goes for all sports games.

Thanks, man. And I've been rotating CF/RF pretty regularly. Only every day guy right now in the outfield is Schwarber. But Zagunis has been really good, surprisingly. Like it says, he hit a home run on his first pitch he saw. Was pretty cool, just snuck into the bleachers in left field.

By hitting the past few games has been very-sub par. I think my team batting average is around .246 which is about 26th in the league. I just hit a lot of home runs.

What is the best way to progress the players in your farm system? I am having a difficult time progressing players to their full potential, especially the ones in the top 50. Is there a best way to go about this?
