In my Cubs franchise, I recently simmed to the offseason between 2019 & 2020 out of curiosity and because that's just one of my favorite parts of the game. I had about 50 million in budget space, and four guys who were arbitration eligible. I made all of them reasonable, long term offers, and after that should have had in the neighborhood of 20-25 mil in budget space remaining.

However, the game wouldn't let me sign ANY players from other teams. Always saying that I lacked the budget space.
I don't know that I really have any secrets. I had appx $80M in available budget for the off-season and had 3 guys up for arbitration. I offered 2 of them and let Tommy Pham walk. I also wasn't able to come to a deal with Carlos Martinez during the exclusive negotiation period, but was able to sign him as a free agent. I also signed Dioner Navarro and Miguel Socolovich, as well as signing all my contract renewable guys except for 3 I think.

I'm still waiting for the arbitration hearings in Feb for Sierra and Osuna, so I keep in mind the money being spent for them while negotiating contracts.

Question for you in terms of not being able to sign free agents. Were all your contract renewable players signed when you offered free agent contacts? What about coaches?

The only thing I can think of is the game was making you hold x amount of money to cover the costs of these players and coaches.

The game does not seem to allow you to re-sign the renewable players under team control until the free agency period opens, but I offered every one of them, and 90% signed quickly.

I had no coaching spots open, and actually was spending less in that area than before because Maddon retired and I replaced him with a CPU generated manager making 1/3 as much, so that should have given me 5-6m more in budget space, if anything.

I had only one free agent, and I signed him to a deal at 4m per season before that period ended.

And then I had the four players who were arb eligible. The question that I've been asking since this generation of the game released is whether those players are asking for more in arbitration than they are in a one year deal in free agency. So for example, if I meet their desire and offer something that they're totally happy with in that screen, are they asking for more through the arb process? Because otherwise, I can't figure out where the money is tied up.

I very much wish that the whole system was more transparent.

I honestly am not sure why you're experiencing that issue and I am not, *knock on wood*.

I haven't had any issues signing free agents or signing my own guys, outside of the issue I posted about in a new thread where I couldn't exercise options on 3 players and couldn't offer contracts to controllable players during the exclusive negotiation period.

Any luck finding a "Pending" screen to claim waiver guys?

            Its not there.

I looked for it last night when the Diamondbacks placed a guy on waivers.

2 of my guys were claimed off waivers, but I can't claim anyone. Frustrating.

Hopefully I'm just really missing it.

The system does not define how much you have go spend, how much of an increase/decrease you have year to year.

If there is a hold there should be a menu that shows you have; 100 million space
20 million hold for coaches, 20 million renewable, 30 for arbitration and 30 million for free agency. Then when you finish tasks like coaches the remaining goes into free agency remaining budget. A simple bar graph would suffice.

I'm not saying there is definitely a hold, just a thought.

I haven't had any issues thus far with getting through the offseason. I see my weekly cash flow available and multiply that by 26 weeks and it gives me a rough estimate of what I have to spend.

I'm not sure why Unlucky13, and others, have ran into the issue of not being able to sign free agents. My experience has been different.

Same here, the only issues I’ve ever had signing free agents came from having a full roster which is easily fixable. The trade screen shows you the potential cash flow affect of signing a free agent on the offer screen before you actually tender the offer.

Are you playing with default contracts? I went through and corrected them all to match real life before I started my franchise. Perhaps the game has issues with that now. It did not seem to in 16.

I am using default contracts. And I'm using a carryover from '16 if that makes any difference

There is a hold, but the end user doesnt know what amount or why. Just a simple series of bar or pie graphs would clear the confusion with a total budget. So if my new budget is 100m and last year was 97 it's clear I gained 3 million.

The holds would be visual so the end user could see how much would be left to sign free agents.

Oh ok I didn’t know there was actually a hold, I was just spitballing.

Yeah that information would be nice to have especially for newcomers to franchise mode, who SDS seems to be trying to assist.

                              Re: Franchise Budget Question

So, I just finished my first year of my franchise and got through the offseason.

I didn't make a lot of major moves during the free agency and focussed on improving organizational depth while keeping most of my core in tact.

-Locked up Severino to a 5 year deal, 5.5m per year
-Re-signed Gardner for 2 years, 3.9m per year
-Signed most of my RNW players to 1 year deals after they didn't want my longer, club-friendly offers
-Offered arbitration to most of those who were eligible, since it was cheaper short-term

                              Free agency signings:
                              -Lucas Duda, 1 year, 5.3m
-Tommy La Stella, 1 year, 2.4m
-Leury Garcia, 2 years, 1.1m per year
                              -Charlie Morton, 1 year, 4.7m

When I finished spring training, I filled out my 90 man roster with a couple of depth players and marginal prospects.

My payroll ended up at 110m (136.16m, including coaches) to begin the season. I noticed that you are shown how much money total you have left in your budget on the home screen, when you arrow down to it. I was able to see I had 12.26m left in budget space. I'm puzzled as to why this is not the case during the offseason.

I guess you're right. But real contracts make it...real. Without that, its hardly realistic. Its not as if the ones the game comes preloaded with are to scale.
