Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

This game can be very frustrating at times... I really would love to see two things vanquished from this game... side arm slingers and the dreaded Knuckle Curveball. I think most of Texas's and Houston pitchers have that pitch in their makeups.

With this win that pushes the Astros four games back and into fourth place in the division. However, the Angels are on a seven-game win streak and have pushed into third place 3.5 games back. The Mariners are in second place if you can believe that. They have won four straight games.

My strikeouts in this game were out of control. however, my walks were really good...

Since I use the Mariners I face them a lot as well and always go "*sigh* here we go again" better results when I'm patient. The side arm guys tend to lose control and will miss the zone low if you lay off or if you just use contact to foul off a bunch of pitches so at least I can make them work.

For the Knuckle Curve guys it's a similar thing if swing and miss the first time they usually try it again or throw it high. So I know to just lay off the next pitch whatever it might be unless it's just something to good to not swing at. If I've gotten fooled by it multiple times that game though, once I calm down and just let them toss it a few times without swinging the tend to let it hang a bit.

In both cases I don't always get a hit but for side arm guys i can run their pitch count up and get them yanked and the knuckle guys will get cautious and not throw it as much or leave a hanger that I can punish them on.

I've always been the type of guy to sim my franchise modes and start semi playing in playoffs but now I recently started playing at least 2 games per series and I'm having the most fun I've had playing this game! Now my dilemma is should I do a rebuild with the Marlins or use my favorite team the A's... What do you guys find lasts longer using your favorite teams or rebuild/use an other team?

The Dodgers took the series finale behind Kershaw, 3-2. Another fun, intense game. They took the regular-season series four games to two. I'm definitely going to be nervous if I see them in the NLCS.

I ran A's franchises for YEARS AND DECADES in video games dating back to the Sega Genesis. the longest franchise I have ever run that is not the A's is the Florida Marlins in 15. If it wasn't for them changing the team budget system and having me thinking that I had lost over a billion dollars that I had (mostly) purchased I would probably still be playing that franchise.

I say if there is a team that you pull for or like other than your favorite team then go for it. even try tinking with the roster with trades. if there are players you just can't hit with our whatever on that team.

As you can see with the A's I have made many moves over the two years of running this franchise...it wasn't that I disliked certain players but I just couldn't hit with them, or I wanted better defense at that position... so off they went.

after last season, however, I decided that I will just play manager and let the CPU be my everything else G.M. So I no longer have control over trades, contracts FA's, coaches signings, etc.

makes it pretty fun actually. at least for me. because if not I would have probably signed players I really didn' want or need or whatever to contracts that I couldn't afford or whatever

My biggest problem most of the time is when I am behind in the count or have a two-strike count regardless. I get into uber protect mode and just get into if it is coming in swinging mode. as you can probably guess I have given away a great many walks by doing this.

A Chicago Cubs Franchise- The Dynasty Continues

Breaking News: just two weeks into may the Chicago Cubs are looking to blossom their poor starting rotation as well as the back end of the bullpen. The Cubs have been in heavy talks with the Mets in Hope's of acquiring Mets Closer Edwin Diaz and starter Zach Wheeler, they have also been in heavy talks with the Dodgers on the availability of lefty relievers Scott Alexander and Caleb Ferguson. Both Alexander and Ferguson would be great additions to a stellar pen this far but Ferguson would provide more years of control. Will there be a deal to get done only time will tell stay tune for further news regarding these trade talks.

                  Miami Marlins Franchise:

I started up a franchise with Miami as I wanted to do a classic rebuild. I was surprised by how many good prospects they have in their system already. They have loads of A potential outfielders as well as a future ace in Sixto Sanchez and basically a solid B potential prospect at every position. The only thing to do is wait and hope they all pan out.

Currently 40-49 a few weeks before the trade deadline. I think that’s better than I thought we would be so pretty happy with the team so far. Our hitting as been great led by Brian Anderson, Harold Ramirez and Neil Walker who are all hitting in the high .290s. Thought I would make a post about my draft before I post about the upcoming trade deadline.

                  Draft-

The plan here was to just get the best players available and most value as there isn’t really a position that we were in desperate need of.

Pick 1: SS, Carlos Luis (20), 72 OVR, 86 POT. Went with this shortstop with my first round pick as he seemed close to MLB ready and seems to have the potential as a every day MLB shortstop. Good contact ratings, great vision and discipline, 50 fielding rating but has a strong arm and amazing speed (95).
Ceiling- Everyday top of the order shortstop. High average, 10 HRS per season
                  Floor- Backup MLB infielder.

Pick 2: SP, Bill Mohr (21), 68 OVR, 89 POT. Thrilled that he was still available in the second round after almost taking him in the first. Seems like a top of the rotation arm with a great selection of pitches, including a 4 seam, change up, splitter, 2 seam and slider.
Ceiling- 1 or 2 MLB starter.
Floor- 3 or 4 MLB starter.

Pick 3: SP, Greg Falvey (19), 68 OVR, 86 POT. Went with this guy as he was the best available even though I’m not a fan of his stats. Doesn’t really have a stat that jumps out at you but they are all average. Definitely lacking a strikeout pitch as he currently only throws a 4 seam that sits 92 mph, sinker at 88 mph and a 2 seam 89 mph. Nothing with any sort of break which is concerning.
Ceiling- 4 or 5 MLB starter
                  Floor- Bullpen

Pick 4: 1B, Leandro Estrella (18), 49 OVR, 78 POT. Definitely a project but at 18 years old he has time to develop. Decent power rating is about all he has right now.
                  Ceiling- bench bat
                  Floor- minor leaguer

Pick 5: 2B, Ryan Frank (18), 51 OVR, 63 POT. Not much to say other than bust. He will go unsigned by the Marlins.

Floor- hope you have a backup plan

Pick 6: CP, Clifford Abel (18), 71 OVR, 82 POT. Didn’t really want to take a closer this draft but he fell a lot and seemed like good value this late into the draft. High k/9 and bb/9 ratings should help him become a solid reliever.
Ceiling- MLB set up man/potential closer
                  Floor- MLB bullpen arm

Pick 7: RP, Kiki Poe (21), 57 OVR, 79 POT. With our last pick we took this lefty reliever. Cool name but he has lots to work on and being 21 already might be a problem. Has low k/9 and bb/9 which isn’t a good start.
Ceiling- solid depth AAA bullpen arm
                  Floor- AA

Overall happy with my draft selections. Extremely excited for our first two picks who both will begin next year in AAA.

Cardinals willing to listen to offers for Ozzie Albies

Get ready folks...the turmoil may be coming again! The Cardinals are reportedly open to listening to offers for SS Ozzie Albies.

The Cardinals re-signed Albies during the offseason to a 5 year $90MM deal in the offseason after acquiring him via trade from the Twins last season for SP Alex Reyes and RP Adam Cimber.

Albies became the focal point of a tirade from manager Mike Matheny last year when Matheny made comments that Albies "doesn't fit this roster" thus leading Albies to speak out saying "if you don't want me then trade me". Well...it appears the Cardinals are open to trading the young star.

Albies has been the topic of discussion this season after signing that big contract due to his struggles. Albies, thru June is hitting .197 with 7 homeruns and 33 RBI's. He just committed his 9th error of the season yesterday against the Pirates. His struggles have gotten to the point that Matheny has pulled him from the lineup on numerous occasions and even delegated him to the bench during a series in Oakland and now the series against Pittsburgh. The Cardinals have relied on Yairo Munoz and Kike Hernandez to fill the role vacated by the benched Albies.

And as anyone would expect, Albies is extremely uphappy and has been seemingly all year. When he's been on he's been great, flashing the leather for several defensive gems and his bat has come thru in the clutch a few times. But inconsistency has been the only constant this year, and committing 9 errors which is more than he's had the past two full seasons combined, just adds to the frustration.

There will be no shortage of interested parties for Albies. The Dodgers, Rangers, Braves, Cubs, and Pirates are just the very tip of the teams that have reached out to the Cardinals to discuss a deal.

Will the Cardinals trade one of their prized offseason signings? They've done it before when George Springer was signed and quickly traded to the Yankees when it seemed that Springer didn't gel well in the clubhouse. The Cardinals went to the playoffs still that season. Will a move of Albies provide the same fate? Is his constant frustration and frustrating performance upsetting a clubhouse of guys that generally have gotten along?

I guess time will tell. The trade deadline is 4 weeks away.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

The playoff bracket is set. We will be facing the winner of the WC game.

AL Wild Card Game: Red Sox 88-78 @ Astros 89-73
                      Chris Sale Vs Gerrit Cole
Surprisingly both these teams failed to reach 90 wins. Boston is lucky to even be here. They dropped 2 of their last 3 games to the 106 loss Orioles in their own ballpark. If wasn’t for Houston beating LA twice in their last 3 Boston might not be here, they only snuck in by 1 game. A big concern here is Chris Sale. He’s been off all season. To close out his season, he was shelled for 6 runs by the Orioles lineup and forced out after 4 innings. His ERA has spiked up to 3.67 and his WHIP is up to 1.19. Both are career worsts. The rest of the AL will surely be cheering on Boston, as no one wants to face a stacked Astros squad.

                      ALDS: Yankees Vs TBD

                      ALDS: A’s 95-67 Vs Indians 100-62
An A’s victory would be a major upset. The star power is in Cleveland. Something to watch here, Kluber and Carrasco are entering the playoffs on cold streaks. Cleveland’s bullpen has been surprisingly great. Only 2 RP’s with an ERA above 3.00. Expect Cleveland’s stacked pitching staff to lead them past Oakland in decisive fashion.

NL WC Game: Phillies 89-73 @ Dodgers 96-66
                      Kershaw Vs Nola
Kershaw is pitching at his typical level, meanwhile Nola has a rough year on the mound for Philly pitching to a 4.27 ERA. None of their starters have very impressive so there’s no clear alternative to throwing Nola out there anyway and hoping for the best. Worth noting, two of the Phillies biggest bats in Harper and Hoskins are significantly weaker against left handed pitching. Harper, now the reigning NL MVP, is also on a cold streak.

                      NLDS: Cubs Vs Nationals
No Harper no problem. After losing Harper, the Nats are back on top of the East and back in the postseason. They feature one of the best 1-2-3 starters in baseball with Scherzer, Strasburg, and Corbin. Their bullpen is pretty questionable as usual outside of closer Sean Doolittle, they certainly can’t afford to have him Doolittle for them out of the bullpen this October. On paper, Chicago is a much deeper team.

                      NLDS: Rockies vs TBD.

                      News:
                      Mets Collapse
The Mets were in good position to be a playoff team all year long. Until September. Started by dropping 2 if 3 to the Nats, then were Swept in 3 by Philly, lost 3 of 4 to Arizona, lost 3 of 4 to the Dodgers, all were home games. And then the death blow, an embarrassing 4 game sweep at the hands of the Marlins at Citi Field. They then lost of 3 to the Braves to end their season. Missed the WC by 2 games. Even with that, they still finished 87-75.

After a busy offseason and productive spring training figuring out how to approach this new look club, the St Louis Cardinals opening day roster for 2020 would look like this.

                          C: Molina
1B: Pujols (primarily to start)/ Hernandez would see significant time as well though and this would probably be a year long shared position
                          2B: Hornsby
                          3B: Torre
                          SS: Ozzie
                          LF: Musial
                          CF: Edmonds
                          RF: Slaughter

Bench: Brock, Hernandez, Carpenter, Bader and Weiters

                          Rotation:

                          1: Gibson
                          2: Spahn
                          3: Martinez
                          4: Micholas
                          5: Flaherty

                          Long relief/ spot starts: Gant

                          Middle Relief:

                          Brebbia
                          Sutter

                          Setup:

                          Hicks

                          CP: Miller

                          END OF APRIL UPDATE

The Redbirds start the season playing great baseball getting solid production almost all the way around, leading the central division the entire time until just days before turning to May. Pittsburgh has emerged as the apparent top competition, at least early in this young season, and are 2 games ahead of St Louis heading to May. The 2 clubs play each other in a 3 game set at Busch to begin the next month. Chicago has fell hard early on sitting presently last in the division.

                          IMG_1323.jpg

The Cards opened the season sweeping the Mariners in Seattle, but lost 2 of 3 very close well played games against an improved Philadelphia team that finished just ahead of the Cardinals last season in the final race to make the wildcard, falling just short themselves. They then took 2 out of 3 in Cincinnati, and proceeded to win their home opener and 2 out of 3 against the Brewers before starting the stretch in April that everyone felt would show exactly how this team matched up against some of the premier clubs in the league, Starting with a dominant 3 game sweep at home against the defending WS Champion Astros, that sent expectations through the roof. Next they traveled to Atlanta sweeping the ridiculously overhauled and stacked Braves, leaving this Redbird team ready for anyone. Back home in a 3 game set against another early favorite, the SF Giants, they took another 2 out of 3. Definitely riding high with confidence. But an underperforming team at this point, Colorado would be next. Similarly to their matchups last year this Rockies team always seams to produce high scoring games against St Louis and the Cardinals just fell short 2 out of 3 times losing the series. They finished the month on a west coast trip that began with them losing 2 of 3 to SF then getting swept in a 2 game set at Oakland. With the exception of the first game in SF when they kinda got beat up, all the others on that trip were close and definitely winnable, so other than dropping behind Pittsburgh in the standings, no real damage to the overall optimism was done. BUT..... that first series in May coming up next feels much more important now lol!!!

                          *MONTHLY HONORS*
                          *APRIL*

                          TOP PLAYER
Stan Musial .326 average 4 HR 22 RBI

                          IMG_1328.jpg

There were many candidates here and it was hard to pick just 1, but not only was he consistent all month both with the bat and in the field, he also hit his historic number 500 HR at home in Busch giving the home fans quite a memorable moment!

                          TOP PITCHER
                          Miles Micholas W/L 2-0 ERA 2.70 WHIP 1.09

                          IMG_1329.jpg

This selection was no easier because everyone had a solid month. But after looking at the numbers 2 things stood out. Zero losses, and that 1.09 WHIP. Great first month for Miles!

                          TOP FARM STANDOUT
                          Austin Gomber

Gomber has been lights out for Memphis early, and earned himself some time with the big club in May. The franchise had planned before the season began to work some young arms in early if they earn it. Preferably at times of their choosing, not because of necessity. April has afforded them that luxury and Gomber has stood out as that first player. He will take Martinez spot this weekend.

                          *CARDINALS APRIL*
                          *AT A GLANCE*

So far so good. Everyone in the starting lineup is contributing, including Hernandez on a slightly less frequent basis. No big HR numbers but several above .300 hitters and greatly improved RS/RA ratio from last year. League leading team ERA and .991 fielding percentage keep them in almost every game. Ozzie, Molina and Pujols are all having gold glove type seasons so far and Ozzie is 3rd in the league with 10 SB. Brock has been money off the bench as has Bader the few times he’s been called on. And those 2 have been very useful weapons as late game runners. Carpenter is the only bat that’s really struggling when his opportunities arise. Starting pitching has been great! Bullpen has been top notch. Not much to complain about at all so far. Let’s hope they keep it rolling!

                          *COMING IN MAY*

                          IMG_1324.jpg

The Cardinals will see both the red hot first place Pirates and biggest rival defending NL Champ Cubs in both home and away series each. Not to mention 4 games each against the Braves and Mets. They start the month with 10 home games without a day off then play 16 in a row with no rest. Time to test the depth of this roster and hopefully wrestle first place back from the Bucs!

Fulmer took a brutal line drive comebacker square to his head in an absolutely terrifying moment for everyone watching in a Spring Training game before this season even got started. Detroit was hoping this would be his breakout year but he’s out at least 3-4 months if he even returns at all.

For a team like the Royals who have a very limited amount of proven studs, losing your top starting pitcher after just his third start is brutal. He’s looking at least at a few more weeks before being able to return.

Just 3 games in and Aguilar dislocates his shoulder. What a shame as he looked strong those few games. Justin Boar would reclaim 1B after all and has looked strong so far. Aguilar is looking at least another month or so. Then half way through the month newly acquired 2B Wong would go down with a broken foot. He was hitting over .300 with a HR and 4 RBI and seemingly owning the position beforehand. David Fletcher who played second almost all last season for the halos takes back over in his absence.

                          TEX
                          Ian Kinsler

                          IMG_1334.jpg

Rough luck for the Rangers, as their star 2nd baseman Kinsler separated his shoulder a little over a week into the season. But then a couple weeks later his replacement Odor tore a ligament in his finger putting him out of service for at least a month probably longer. Leaving second base duties to newly acquired this offseason, utility man Eduardo Nunez platooning with utility man Logan Forsythe for at least the next week or 2 till Kinsler returns.

                          ATL
                          Sean Newcomb
                          Brian McCann
                          Mike Trout
                          Mike Foltynewicz

                          IMG_1335.jpg

Atlanta gets hit hard! Just a couple weeks in during a red hot start and C Brian McCann tears a finger ligament putting him out for over a month. This throws young Keibert Ruiz right into the mix. Then about a week later big time offseason pickup Trout breaks an ankle putting him out for a month or 2. All kinds of options for them there though as Andruw Jones will now start seeing regular time. Foltynewicz went out after 2 starts as well for a lengthy time as well and still has at least another month or more. Newcomb missed a start or 2 but should be back soon.

                          WAS
                          Johnny Bench

                          IMG_1336.jpg

About halfway through April, Bench who had won the starting catcher spot, fractures his hand putting him out a couple months. Gary Carter will of course resume everyday catcher duties.

                            Seattle Mariners Franchise: 2020

                            Will the Mariners Gamble Payoff?

In what many consider a questionable move the Mariners have called up Felipe Armas to make his debut in The Show. The 25 yr. old 6'2" Venezulen closer was called up to join the MLB bullpen during their road trip to the center of the country late Wednesday night and pitched his first major league inning Thursday night during the Mariners 6-1 win over the Rangers. While not a save situation Armas pitched a solid inning recording the final out by striking out Patrick Wisdom.

Armas is listed as one of the top 50 prospects in the MLB and definitely a key player in the Mariners farm system. Armas is a strike thrower known for limiting hits but when he gets in trouble is prone to giving up the occasional long ball. Prior to being called Armas appeared in 12 games record 10 saves, 1 Win and had an 3.75 ERA.

Prior to the game when reporters asked Manager Scott Servais about the decision to carry an extra arm instead of a position player. Servais said "With the recent acquisition of Jose Peraza we were freed up to experiment with our 25 man roster. Jose can play in the infield or outfield as long as we can give the position guys rest properly we'll be fine. Last year our pitchers had to pitch a lot of innings and by bringing up Felipe we hope to spread out the workload so as the season progress we can hopefully avoid the late season slump. Of course anything is subject to change but for now this is the plan"

A Chicago Cubs Franchise- The Dynasty Continues

Breaking News: Cubs swing three deals and land younger talent while giving up a potential a future Ace!!
On back to back days the Cubs were able to complete a total of 3 trades with the trade with the Mets being the blockbuster one. It started with the Cubs trading Pedro Strop and a PTBN to the Dodgers for younger promising lefty Caleb Ferguson. One day later the Cubs would land a blockbuster trade sending closer Craig Kimbrel, Tyler Chatwood, and rookie Adbert Alzolay the Mets for Edwin Diaz, Seth Lugo, and Zack Wheeler.
After the trade Theo had this to say to reporters "we just felt we want a younger closer, someone we could see locking up for the foreseeable future. We also felt that Seth Lugo was more of what we were looking for as a long reliever/ spot starter with the amount of controllable years left with him. Zack Wheeler is someone we have had on our radar for the last couple of years and we felt the time was right to pursue him and we also look to lock him up after the season is over."
The Cubs were not done there as the third and final trade was an interesting one. The Cubs sent starter Jose Quintana to the Mariners in return get up and coming talented J.P Crawford and a PTBN. This one looked to be a head scratcher to most but Theo addressed this as well having this to say. "We have always thought highly of Crawford even Dating back to his minor league days with the Phillies. Our goal with J.P is to convert him to our everyday second baseman and he also has the ability to play the whole infield and as everyone knows me and Joe both love versatile players."
Theo ended the press conference with this, "while I feel like this is the team we will march into October with and feel really good about the 25 men we have. If the proper deal presents itself we will visit the situation and reevaluate the team."

It’s official, we’ll be taking on the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS!

AL WC Game Recap: Red Sox @ Astros
Sale went into Houston and silenced his doubters, holding a deadly Astros lineup to just 2 runs and working 8 innings deep. Cole matched Sale through 5 innings but the Sox would break it open with a 3 run 6th. Cole would depart without recording a single out in the 6th. Will Harris allowed Boston to add another run the next inning. While Betts, Pedroia, JDM, and Bogaerts, only combined for a single hit and RBI, Benintendi came up big with a 3 Hit 4 RBI night.
                                Red Sox Win 6-2

NL WC Game Recap: Phillies @ Dodgers
LA went in heavily favored but Philly proved everyone wrong putting an 11-5 beating on the Dodgers in front of their home crowd. Kershaw’s playoff struggles continue as he allowed 5 runs in 5 innings while walking 5 batters. Luckily Nola was just as bad allowing 5 runs himself though he did go one more inning then Kershaw. Philly won the battle of the bullpens holding LA scoreless while LA’s bullpen gave up another 6 runs before it was all over.
                                Phillies Win 11-5

                                NLDS: Rockies Vs Phillies

ALDS Preview: Yankees Vs Red Sox
A rematch of the 2018 ALDS. The Yankees will look to avenge last years ALDS loss to the Sox, and the Red Sox will surely be motivated to send their rivals home early yet again and put a major dampener on a historic 117 Win season. This year the Yanks are the favorites to advance to the ALCS. Boston’s offense is more then capable of competing with ours, our big advantage comes on the pitching side. The Red Sox bullpen remains a weakness and their rotation is very questionable outside of Sale and Price. Meanwhile, our bullpen is arguably the strongest out of all the remaining playoff teams.

                                Matchups:

Game 1 Bumgarner Vs Price @ Yankee Stadium
Game 2 Luis Severino Vs E-Rod @ Yankee Stadium
Game 3: James Paxton Vs Chris Sale @ Fenway
Game 4 would be at Fenway.
Game 5 Series would shift back to the Bronx

                                News:
Tanaka Left Off Yankees ALDS Roster
We shift back to a 4 man bench adding Gio Urshela to a bench of Gardner, Romine, and Voit. German will likely be working out of an already deep bullpen this series.

                                Updates:
Indians Lead Series Vs A’s 1-0
Phillies and Rockies Series tied 1-1
                                Nationals up 2-0 on Cubs
