Man, CB, snakebit again in the postseason. One of these days, you're going to win the World Series, and I anticipate I'll hear the celebration here in Iowa.

Francisco Lindor declined player option and will be a free agent

Francisco Lindor declined his player option with the New York Yankees and will be a free agent this winter. The 30 year old will become a free agent after signing with the Yankees two years ago. Lindor finished the 2023 season with a .291 avg with 18 homeruns and 60 RBI.

Lindor only played in 113 games this year due to injury.

Money certainly isn't the driving factor as the Yankees were paying the superstar nearly $30MM per season. It appears that the Yankees inability to get into the postseason (8 straight years) has the 30 year old wanting to take advantage of getting in the market while he still has several productive years left and join a contending team.

There will be no shortage of interested teams trying to secure his services.

Rays re-sign Dylan Bundy to 6 year deal

The Rays wasted little time during the exclusive negotiation period in bringing back there ace. The Rays and Bundy agreed to a 6 year $138MM contract that will keep the 30 in Tampa for possibly the remainder of his career. And not only that, but Bundy granted somewhat of a discount to the Rays by allowing this contract to be backloaded. Bundy will make $16.1MM in 2024 and $18.9MM in 2025. He doesn't hit the $20+M mark until the 2026 season.

10 games in and we’re off to a 7-3 start. We started off the 2020 season by splitting a 4 game series vs Texas, then we took 2 of 3 from Arizona, followed by our first road trip of the year as we headed west to take on the Padres, which resulted in a 3 game sweep. The Yankees aren’t the only East team off to a good start as the Rays have jumped off to a 8-3 start, with Boston 7-2 themselves.

Syndergaard was blasted in his first 2 starts in pinstripes, with an ERA of 22.50. It’s not what you want.

After a shaky first two outings from Green as an opener, we will be moving back to a normal rotation. In 3 innings he’s given up 3 runs. With Jordan Montgomery throwing a combined 9 innings of 1 run ball from the bullpen, he’ll be taking the rotation spot.

So far, the revamped bullpen has been sharp as expected and worth every penny. Doolittle has an ERA of 0.00 through 5.2 innings. Morrow has allowed 1 run through 4.1 innings, a solo HR. The Ottavino for Melancon swap from ST has worked very well so far, with Melancon only allowing 1 run in his first 5.2 innings of work and is quickly establishing himself as the top right handed option out of the bullpen. The most dominant RP remains Andrew Miller. Through 6 innings, he’s only allowed a single hit and remains the go to man out of the bullpen. With Chapman, Britton, Kimbrel, and Green also there, things have been very good for the Yankee bullpen to this point in 2020.

Next up, we head to Minnesota for a 3 game set with the Twins followed by a day off before we head to the Trop for 3 games to face off with the Rays.

Several Contenders Off To Slow Starts
The worst of the group is the 3-7 Indians, with the Astros 5-5 after losing Gerrit Cole to the Giants over the offseason, Nationals 3-6, and the Dodgers 4-6.

Are the Orioles And Marlins Actually....Good?
Both teams haven’t really improved on paper, but Baltimore is 7-4 and the Marlins are 6-2. Odds are both teams will regress to what they are expected to be soon, but for right now the fans can just enjoy the ride while it lasts.

Gerrit Cole is fun to pitch with.

                    His 2020 debut with the Braves: 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 10 K. He took a no-hitter into the 7th.

Oh, and Thames hit one over the Chophouse. I need to go back to see if the distance is in the box score.

Cardinals bring back Matheny as manager and Lilliquist as pitching coach

The Cardinals have re-signed both Mike Matheny and Derek Lilliquist after both had their contracts expire at the end of the 2023 season.

Both Matheny and Lilliquist were resigned to 3 year deals.

The Cardinals are also working out contract deals with Matthew Shepard (3rd base coach) and Omar Canon (1st base coach), as both also had their contracts expire at the end of the season.

Hitting coach Dave Magadan's contract expired as well, but he has decided to retire forcing the Cardinals to go search the coaching ranks for a new hitting coach.

in the 8 years of franchise I've completed, neither the Yankees nor the Red Sox have made the playoffs.

just lost Odubel Herrera for 1-2 months with a fractured forearm while sliding into second base. I have the depth to cover. However, it is one of my biggest bats out of the lineup for the entire summer. Not expected back until maybe late July to sometime in August.

The off-season and spring training has come to and end. Let’s recap a quiet, but effective one by the Blue Jays.

The trade front was quiet this year as the Blue Jays only made two deals. Firstly, acquiring Starling Marte from the Pirates for Ryan Borucki and Teoscar Hernandez. Secondly, acquiring Ben Gamel from Milwaukee for Jonathan Davis and 1B Edwin Rios. Gamel is coming off a bad year and has one year left on his deal. The Jays hope a change of scenery will be good for him. He will likely start in AAA. The rebuilding Brewers get a young and controllable OF and a first base prospect with plenty of power.

Free Agency was also relatively quiet for the Blue Jays. They did make a few upgrades to the pitching staff, but it appears they are happy with their lineup who was a win away from the World Series last season. Here is the breakdown:

                            Bumgarner 2yr / 36M
                            Jhoulys Chacin 1yr / 4.2M
                            Vizcaino 2yr / 9.2M
                            Leary Garcia 1yr / 1.9M
                            Aramis Garcia minors
                            Lane Adams minors

To note here is that the Blue Jays have upgraded their rotation. They jumped out and snagged Madison Bumgarner, who was obviously impressed enough with Toronto’s World Series run to leave the sun for snow. He ends up on a two year deal with an AAV of 17.5 M per season.

Chacin has a decent year in Milwaukee posting just over three ERA. Milwaukee didn’t bring him back due their young rotation depth and the fact that they are entering a rebuild. Toronto gets him to fill in the 3rd rotation spot on a one year deal

Lastly, Vizcaino was brought in to solidify the bullpen. Toronto’s bullpen was one of the best in baseball last year and David Phelps emerged as one of the top closers in the game. Biagini came second in voting for reliever of the year and Mayza was lights out against lefties. Trade deadline Nick Wittgren and surprise success from Jimmy Cordero and Sam Gaviglio rounded out the middle relief. Depth relievers Domingo Acevedo, Connor Fisk, Justin Shafer were solid when asked upon. Thomas Pannone put up a year of quality innings through both the rotation and bullpen. Derek Law was the only dark spot on the bullpen as he bounced back and forth from AAA and could not get batters out. He was let go and signed with the Cubs. Vizcaino will bring an strikeout pitcher to the end of the bullpen and has experience closing if called upon.

Leurys Garcia is expected to fill in the utility roster spot left behind by Villar, who signed a big deal with Miami. The team will be expected solid contact and ability to play multiple positions. He had a bit of a down year last year in a full time role but will look to bounce back in a platoon / utility role with Toronto.

Here is a look at the 2020 projected lineup:

                            CF Starling Marte
                            3B Ian Happ
                            LF Lourdes Gurriel Jr
                            DH Vlad Guerrero Jr
                            RF Randal Grichuk
1B Rowdy Tellez / Jose Martinez
2B Cavan Biggio / Leurys Garcia
                            SS Bo Bichette
C Reese McGuire / Danny Jansen
Bench: Brandon Drury + platoon as above.

                            Projected Rotation / bullpen:
                            Marcus Stroman
                            Madison Bumgarner
                            Jhoulys Chacin
                            Trent Thornton
                            Sean Reid-Foley

                            David Phelps (CP)
                            Tim Mayza
                            Joe Biagini
                            Arodys Vizcaino
                            Nick Wittgren
                            Sam Gaviglio
                            Thomas Pannone

                            Things to watch:
                            1) Will the young players continue to take a step forward and progress, or will they hit a second year slump? Before we answer this, let’s look at some of the great young stats from 2019:

                            Guerrero Jr - .286/.325/.552, 27 HR, 59 RBI (98 games, 391 AB). 9 errors, 1.7 WAR.
                            Bichette - .256/.285/.355, 2 HR, 11 RBI (30 games, 121 AB). 1 error, 0.5 WAR.
                            Gurriel Jr - .271/.298/.421, 13 HR, 47 RBI (132 games, 461 AB). 8 errors, 0.2 WAR
                            Biggio - .227/.270/.437, 15 HR, 36 RBI, 6 SB (81 games, 277 AB). 7 errors, 0.6 WAR
                            Tellez - .264/.304/.522, 22 HR 56 RBI (114 games, 368 AB). 4 errors 1.0 WAR.

Most of those players started their season late into the year except Tellez and Gurriel. Gurriel had two HR until late August when he explored. Biggio has an amazing playoffs and won Post season MVP. All will look for better seasons this year. If so, this team could be very good. If not, the Jays night have to acquire some veteran reinforcements at the deadline.

                            2) Can the breakout of Randal Grichuk and Ian Happ continue? These two were the Blue Jays best players. Grichuk hit .252 with a team and career high 42 HR and 95 RBI. Happ hit .305 with 34 HR and 93 RBI. Happ’s 4.2 WAR and Grichuk’s 3.8 were position player highs. The team would love to see similar production again.

                            3) Will the catching tandem be good enough? McGuire hit .250 with 1 HR 15 RBI in 124 AB while Jansen hit .209 with 7 HR and 21 RBI in 278 AB. Both barely played in the post season as Cervelli played almost every game. If the two struggle this year in a platoon role, the jays may be forced to acquire a veteran at the deadline.

Can the pitching staff repeat a stellar year? The Blue Jays finished in the top 5 in all pitching categories last season, led by Stroman, Shoemaker, Reid-Foley and Thornton. Adding Bumgarner and Chacin should help the rotation, while the bullpen is the same, plus Vizcaino. Depth might be tested if injuries mount up, but time will tell!

                            Stay tuned.

                              Cardinals off-season outlook

The Cardinals will head into the 2023 off-season in hopes of plugging a few holes to get themselves back into the postseason in 2024 and back to the World Series. The holes are few on this roster, as they will likely retain most of who they had on the active roster in the postseason with possible exceptions being Kiki Hernandez and Tim Lincecum. Other than that, you could see essentially the same 25 men on opening day 2024.

But the Cardinals do have a few areas they will look to address this offseason:

                              * Left handed starter
                              * Bullpen depth

Thats pretty much the primary focus of the Cardinals this offseason. Of course, as the winter moves along, things happen, players become available and it can alter even the best of laid plans, but the front office has its goals and even its targets to fulfill those areas of concern.

We will see how this offseason shakes out and track what happens with the Cardinals and elsewhere around the league.

Sean Gilmartin choose Giants over Cardinals

The Cardinals top target in the offseason was LHP Sean Gilmartin and he chose to accept the Giants 1 year $3.90M offer over the Cardinals 2 year $4.0M offer. The Cardinals made Gilmartin their top target this offseason to add depth and a solid left handed reliever to their bullpen.

Now the Cardinals will have to search the market to find more depth, or possibly explore the trade market.

                                Notable Signings

Diamondbacks signed SP Tyler Kolek to a 6 year $119.40M deal

A's signed SP Sean Newcomb to a 9 year $224.10M deal
