MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - SPRING TRAINING - GAME 8 at CHC

CIN SP Shohei Ohtani vs CHC SP Jon Lester

So this was a rematch vs the CHC, those who read ST GAME 7 know who won the first game. And SP Ohtani's second ST start. Shohei was given a 2 RUN lead in the top of the first by the RED'S batters (a very rare occurance so far this ST). But Shohei decided to give up 2 RUNS in the bottom of the first to tie it at 2-2. This start was not shaping up to be any better than his first start.

Shohei managed to work two more inning without allowing another run to score. Shohei pitches 3 INNINGS with 2 RUNS and the score tied at 2-2.

REDS add 1 RUN in the 5th and another in the 6th, to go up 4-2. But SP Brandon Finnegan in relief decides to do his best Shohei Ohtani impersonation and give up a 2 RUN HOMERUN to CHC 2B Zobrist to tie it up 4-4.

In the 9th, the REDS push 1 across to take a 5-4 lead, CP Jonathan Broxton comes in and records the SAVE, his third of ST. SP Tim Adleman gets the WIN.

The REDS are now 5-3 in ST, and play KCR at home in Goodyear Ballpark, and you guessed it, in Goodyear, AZ. Come on out to the ballpark, WE GUARANTEE IT TO BE A HOT ONE!

MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - SPRING TRAINING - TRADE RUMORS

The REDS new owner Ed Eads Troke and his front office made a lot of moves this off season after purchasing the REDS. Which we may break down and discuss over the course of the 2017 season.

But it does not seem like they are done yet.

Rumors of a Spring Training trade with the Chicago White Sox have been swirling, the two names being heard the most are 1B/3B Matt Davidson and ROOKIE CF Adam Engle.

And sounds like the REDS are willing to trade prospects 2B Shed Long and OF Sebastian Elizalde.

Both sides seem in agreeance and just need to workout a few minor details, so we shall see if this trade comes about anytime soon.

MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - SPRING TRAINING - GAME 9 vs KCR

CIN SP Mike Leake vs KCR SP Jason Hammel

The Royals took a early 2-0 lead after SP Mike Leake gave up a run in the 2nd and again in the 3rd. Leake left after 3 innings.

The REDS managed to score 1 RUN in the 4th on a 1B Joey Votto HR. The score stayed 2-1, KC leading, until the bottom of the 9th. Then RF Steve Selsky managed to turn a bloop hit to rightfield into a triple after RF Butera missed the ball on a dive attempt. CF Drew Stubbs drove him in to tie the game 2-2.

RED'S SP Robert Stephenson was called from the bullpen to pitch a couple extra inning innings, if need be. Stephenson pitched a good 10th inning.

To lead off the bottom of the 10th, 3B Travis Shaw took a RP Flynn fastball deep to rightfield for a walk-off home run. REDS win 3-2, thier third WIN in a row. Reds are now 6-3 in ST.

The REDS play at LAA tomorrow and then have the next day off.

            MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - OFF SEASON - TRADE(S) DISCUSSIONS

So the RED'S new owner with council from his trusted advisors made many moves this offseason after purchasing the team. Most were trades or FA signings to bring back former REDS that the previous ownership had traded away or let go because of "small market salary reasons" , let us call it what it really is...GREED!

Mr. Trokes stated, "First and foremost, building a REDS team that REDS fans can love and cheer for is more important than a bottom line profit. If we make $200 to $300 million, spend half that on salaries ($150 million) and and say another $50 million on other cost, sure $100 million in my bank account is nice.

But, if we are not putting forth a team our REDS fans can enjoy, than I am not doing baseball justice. I'll spend all $300 million or more to do what is right.

This year priority is to bring back fan favorites, guys we had grown to like. Second is building a team to compete year in and year out. We will continue over the years to build a team that can dominate and win championships. This takes time and money, but I am determined to do it."

So one of the RED'S trades was bringing back RF Jay Bruce. Bruce was drafted 12th in the 1st round in 2005 by the REDS. Bruce was called up May of 2008 and became a fan favorite. Prior ownership traded Bruce last year (August 2016) to the Mets. Bruce played 50 games for the Mets and had a dissappointing time after being traded. Trades like this is one of Mr. Troke's reason for buying the REDS.

So the REDS traded back for Jay, the Mets did not want thier previously traded players back, so Cincinnati came up with this trade.

            CIN-
            SP Scott Feldman----34 YEARS OLD - 74 OVERALL - C POTENTIAL
            RF Scott Schebler----26 YEARS OLD - 67 OVERALL - C POTENTIAL

            NYM -
            RF Jay Bruce---------29 YEARS OLD - 76 OVERALL - C POTENTIAL
            LF Tim Tebow--------29 YEARS OLD - 43 OVERALL - D POTENTIAL

Yes, that Tim Tebow, the REDS plan to start Tebow in thier Rookie League Team the Greeneville Reds as a 1B/LF.

And hopefully, REDS fans will be able to see Bruce in rightfield for years to come and maybe a championship win or two...or more.

You are definitely having fun with this. I picked up Tebow too in my franchise.

MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - SPRING TRAINING - GAME 10 at LAA

CIN SP Homer Bailey vs LAA SP Tyler Skaggs

In game 10 of ST the REDS would play the ANGELES, the REDS would put up 1 RUN in each of the first three innings against SP Skaggs. While on the other side SP Homer Bailey would have a second strong outing by going 3 innings allowing no RUNS. Bailey left with a 3-0 lead.

The score would remain 3-0 until the seventh, when the REDS would add another RUN, and then another in the 8th to make the score 5-0. The REDS finally had a game where they felt comfortable subbing in RP Michael Lorenzen to play the outfield. Lorenzen got to play 3 innings in leftfield, recording 1 PUTOUT. Lorenzen recorded a RBI single in the 8th.

40 MAN CP Nick Christiani would come in in the 9th record 2 quick outs, but then blew the shut out by giving up a dinger to KC's RF Eric Young Jr. Christiani would give up a walk to the next batter, but get the last out on a pop up.

The REDS WIN 5-1, their 4th in a row, and are now 7-3. (I had to make sure my setting were still on All-Star because I was hitting pretty good.)

The REDS have tomorrow off and then host KC the next day for an early ST rematch.

MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - SPRING TRAINING - TEAM UPDATE

Well the trade with the CWS finally got finalized as the REDS trade...

                  CIN-
                  2B Shed Long------------21 YEARS OLD - 61 OVERALL - C POTENTIAL
                  LF Sebastian Elizalde----25 YEARS OLD - 62 OVERALL - C POTENTIAL

                  CWS -
                  3B Matt Davidson--------26 YEARS OLD - 64 OVERALL - C POTENTIAL
                  CF Adam Engel-----------25 YEARS OLD - 60 OVERALL - D POTENTIAL

The main chip piece in this trade is for CF Adam Engel, Adam grew up in Loveland, OH part of the Greater Cincinnati Area, he was a REDS fan and Barry Larkin fan. Happy Homecoming, Adam.

Adam is a stronger defender this early in his career and needs work with his bat. Even though Engel was probably going to get to start in the BIGS this year with CWS, we are expecting the REDS to have him start in AAA or maybe AA to get him some time at 2B and SS. We'll see how this works out.

3B Matt Davidson is an okay bat and glove, but what is intriquing about him, is he may have some pitcher DNA in him. With the REDS already having two-way players SP Ohtani and RP Lorenzen it looks like the REDS may be calling thier RP from 3B instead of from the bullpen.

You thought you knew "Who" was on first, "What" was on second and "I don't know" at third. Just wait until the whole infield is composed of pitchers, that will confuse the opposition.

Cardinals end Spring Training 12-16...ready for Opening Day

Spring Training has come to an end for the Cardinals, who finished the Spring at 12-16, losers of 4 of their last 5. The Cardinals will now head back to St.Louis to get ready for Opening Day as they host the Reds to start the 2024 season.

The Cardinals did make a few roster moves as Spring came to a close:

                      * Cardinals placed RF Tommy Pham on outright waivers and he was claimed by the Giants. Pham had a horrible Spring for the Cardinals and wasn't pleased with being either delegated to a bench role, or more likely optioned to Memphis for the start of the regular season. The Giants in need of a right fielder, quickly claimed Pham.

                      * Placed SP Patrick Corbin on the 10 Day IL due to shoulder stiffness. The thought is the Cards will put Corbin at Springfield to see how he does and if he can pitch a few starts without a setback. Corbin missed most of 2023 with a torn rotator cuff and only lasted 5 innings in Spring (2 starts) before experiencing the shoulder discomfort.

                      * Drew Harrington will open the regular season as the 5th starter for the Cardinals Opening Day Roster. Harrington beat out Dakota Hudson, primarily because he is left handed. Harrington did pitch well in his final 2 outings of Spring throwing, 9 scoreless innings and racking up 8 strikeouts. He did issue 4 walks.

                      * Dylan Carlson is expected to take the 5th outfielder spot vacated by the departure of Tommy Pham. It will either be Carlson or Jose Adolis Garcia, but Carlson had the better spring both at the plate and in the field.

                      * Top catching prospect Devon Snow will start the season as the everyday catcher at Memphis. He was thought to make the 25 man roster when Spring started, but Andrew Knizner played outstanding and Snow suffered a sprained ankle that cost him a week of catching and a few days of at-bats.

                      * Andrew Miller did end camp as a bullpen piece for the Cardinals Opening Day roster. Miller and Corey Littrell will be the two lefties in the bullpen for the Cardinals.

                      * LHP Robby Scott's struggles this Spring will mean a role in Memphis to open the 2024 season. Scott had a +10 ERA and a plus 2.3 WHIP in just 9 1/3 innings of Spring work.

                      * As expected RHP Kyle Funkhouser has been named the Cardinals Opening Day starter for the 2024 season. Funkhouser takes the reigns from Michael Wacha who will start the second game of the season.

                      * Top prospect 3B Nolan Gorman will again open the season at Springfield. Gorman though will be on a fast track to the majors should he continue to produce as he did last season. Gorman isn't currently on the 40 man roster, but could be added quickly, especially with a spot opened up by Tommy Pham's departure to the Giants.

                      2024 OPENING DAY ROSTER

Mike Matheny and the Cardinals will begin the 2024 season with the following 25 man roster:

                      STARTERS

                      Kyle Funkhouser
                      Michael Wacha
                      Carlos Martinez
                      Jack Flaherty
                      Drew Harrington (L)

                      BULLPEN

                      Mike Mayers
                      Andrew Miller (L)
                      Jordan Hicks
                      Corey Littrell (L)
                      Zach Burdi
                      Roberto Osuna
                      Trevor Rosenthal

                      CATCHERS

                      Carson Kelly
                      Andrew Knizer

                      INFIELDERS

                      Brendan McKay
                      Kolten Wong
                      Ozzie Albies

MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - SPRING TRAINING - GAME 12 vs LAA

CIN SP Matt Belisle vs LAA SP Jesse Chavez

The REDS have yet another early ST (Spring Training) rematch, this time vs LAA. SP Belisle would take the mound for his third start this spring. Matt would pitch 4 innings of 1 hit baseball and would not allow Trout and company to score any runs. Cincy would put up 2 RUNS early in the 1st and Belisle would leave with a 2-0 lead.

Newly acquired 3B Matt Davidson got to come in in the 7th to pitch in relief. Davidson's leash was going to be real short, any trouble and manager Price had a rightie and leftie ready in the pen. But Davidson did real well retiring three in a row, striking out one and earning a "SECONDARY POSITION? TROPHY".

Invitee SP Luis Castillo would also pitch 2 scoreless in his first ST appearance.

The REDS would end up winning 5-0, with a 9-3 record. Next up...@ OAK.

Cardinals win on Opening Day over Reds 7-2

The Cardinals have won on Opening Day for the 4th year in a row as they defeated the Reds 7-2 at Busch Stadium.

Kyle Funkhouser got the start and he got off to a rough start giving up 2 runs in the Top of the 1st. But his deficit would be short lived, as the Cardinals would put up 4 runs in the bottom half thanks to a Juan Fabregas RBI single and Jo Adell's 3 run homerun. All 4 runs came with 2 outs.

The game would stay scoreless until the 8th when Patrick Wisdom launched his first homerun of the new year, a 2 run shot that made it 6-2. The Cardinals would add another when Juan Fabregas scored on a error by Rafael Devers.

Kyle Funkhouser recorded his first win of the 2024 campaign pitching 5 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and only recording one strikeout. Jordan Hicks, Roberto Osuna, and Andrew Miller closed things out for the Cardinals.

The Reds and Cardinals square off tomorrow night with Michael Wacha matching up with Lucas Giolito.

MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - SPRING TRAINING - GAME 13 at OAK

CIN SP Robert Stephenson vs OAK SP Daniel Mengden

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END! BUMMER!

Rookie SP Robert Stephenson who is fighting for the 5th rotation spot got to start against the A's. Stephenson made a good argument he is ready to pitch for the REDS by adding on to a already good ST by pitching 4 innings, giving up only 3 HITS and allowing NO RUNS. The REDS scored 1 RUN in the second and allowing Stephenson to leave with a 1-0 lead.

The REDS, who have won 5 straight, lead Oakland until the 7th, when RP Tony Cingrani had a meltdown, admitedly manager Bryan Price said he should have pulled Cingrani early in the middle of the A's comeback, but wanted to see if Cingrani could work himself out of trouble. HE DID NOT! After allowing a single, then a another single then a homerun! The REDS trailed 1-3.

The REDS had a rally going in the 9th, but fell short. Losing 1-3. Thier record now 9-4.
