    Cardinals lose series to Pirates

The Cardinals dropped 2 of the 3 games against the Pirates over the weekend at Busch stadium. The teams split the first 2 games of the series, but the Pirates took the rubber match on Sunday. Thankfully the Reds beat up on the Cubs so the Cardinals remain just 7 games back as the calendar flips to July.

Game 1: Kyle Funkhouser was dominant in the game throwing 6 innings of 4 hit baseball and only allowing 2 runs, both coming off the bat of Oneil Cruz who hit a line drive to right field that barely cleared the wall. Funkhouser struck out 10 hitters over the 6 innings and was unfortunately tagged with his 3rd loss of the season. The offense couldn't generate anything against Jose Fernandez who pitched a complete game shutout against the Cardinals, allowing only 3 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 12.

Game 2: The Cardinals offense wouldn't be denied in this game putting up 9 runs in route to a 9-0 shutout behind the brilliance of Jack Flaherty. Flahery threw a complete game shutout allowing just 2 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 14 batters. Flaherty carried a perfect game into the 6th before walking Andrew McCutchen and a no-hitter into the 7th before Dale Waldron lined a base hit back up the middle.

Patrick Wisdom had a day at the plate going 3 for 3 with a walk, a sac fly, 2 homeuns and 7 RBI's. It was Wisdom's 6th game this year with multiple homeruns. Kolten Wong was perfect as well going 1 for 1 with 3 walks. He leads the majors in walks drawn.

Game 3: Austin Gomber had been rolling up until this start but the Pirates beat up the 29 year old to the tune of 8 runs on 10 hits over 2 1/3 innings. Gomber had been pitching well and earned a spot in the rotation when the Cardinals decided to send Harrington to the minors instead of Gomber. Gomber couldn't get anything going and you had a feeling it was going to be a long day when on 2 pitches he gave up two homeruns to Ke'Bryan Hayes and Andrew McCutchen. The Pirates would win the game 13-6.

Jo Adell had a good day at the plate going 2 for 3 with a homerun and 3 RBI's. Ozzie Albies actually started this game and went 3 for 4 with an RBI and 2 doubles. This was his first start of the series and first start since news broke the Cardinals would reportedly entertain trade offers for him.

The Cardinals kick off July with the Cubs coming to town for a 3 game series starting tomorrow. A big series for the Cardinals if they want to stay within striking distance of the Central Division leaders.

Cardinals option Austin Gomber to Memphis

The Cardinals have optioned SP Austin Gomber back to Memphis. The 29 year old left hander was roughed up in his last start against the Pirates.

Gomber has made 10 starts for the Cardinals this season compiling a 4-5 record with an ERA of just over 5. Gomber's previous two starts to Sunday were good, but prior to that, and Sunday, he's been inconsistent.

The Cardinals have not made a decision on a corresponding move, though it could be either LH reliever Robby Scott, RH Pedro Baez, or the Cardinals may recall OF Jose Adolis Garcia, though they would have to select his contract, and the Cardinals currently have 39 players on their 40 man roster.

Giants Franchise Report - Allstar Break

So we reached the Allstar-Break in my Giants franchise. Since the last update we went 24-26 over the last 50 games which still leaves us in 3rd place in the NL West with now 7 games behind the leading Dodgers. In the wildcard race we are already 11.5 games behind though. With the trade deadline coming up next we will look into some possible trades for some younger talent but without entering into complete rebuild mode.

        NL West standings
        Dodgers 49-43
        Padres 43-47 (-5)
        Giants 41-49 (-7)
        D’backs 39-52 (-9.5)
        Rockies 37-54 (-11.5)

        Team stats
        AVG .232 (30.)
        Runs 344 (26.) / 3.822 per game
        Hits 685 (30.) / 7.611 per game
        Doubles 144 (14.)
        Triples 16 (17.)
        Homeruns 83 (29.)
        Stolen Bases 31 (30.)
        Walks 284 (26.)
        Strikeouts 696 (7.)
        Slugging .377 (29.)
        OBP .303 (30.)
        Errors 33 (4.)
        ERA 4.07 (15.)
        Hits allowed 758 (10.)
        Runs allowed 375 (12.)
        HR allowed 115 (24.)
        Walks allowed 177 (1.)
        Strikeouts 655 (25.)

        ERA Starters 4.26
        ERA Bullpen 3.63

        Individual performances

        +GOOD
MadBum has a ERA of 3.29 with 7 wins through 18 starts so far. He is on the way back to become once again the ace the Giants need.

Reyes Moronta has a breakout season so far and has converted 14 of 15 save opportunities this season after he took over at least partially the closer job from Will Smith who was struggling hard. His ERA is at an incredible 1.04 through 34.2 innings pitched.

Brandon Crawford is leading the majors with 31 doubles this year. His average with .259 is not great but the amount of doubles in just incredible.

        -BAD
Jeff Samardzija has allowed a major league leading 26 homeruns in 104 innings pitched. His ERA is at 5.11
Mark Melancon has an ERA of 4.85 and his the main candidate to be traded soon as there are other relievers waiting with a much better performance this year.

        Around the league news

        Batting title in AL
Mookie leads with .001 in front of Trout (.370)

        HR leaders
        NL - Christian Yelich (30)
        AL - Mike Trout (27)

        RBI leaders
        NL - Anthony Rendon (79)

        AL - Joey Gallo (71)

        Saves
NL - David Robertson / Andrew Miller (29)
AL - Aroldis Chapman / Cam Bedrosian (32)

        ERA
        NL - Cole Hamels (2.41)
        AL - Luis Severino (1.79)

        Pitching WAR
NL - Jacob de Grom (3.9)
        AL - Carlos Carrasco (4.0)

        Batting WAR

        NL - Anthony Rendon (6.2)
        AL - Mike Trout (7.5)

So as you can see Mike Trout is having and historic season and should win the AL MVP unanimously.
In the NL Rendon is leading the MVP race with Yelich as a far away contender.

          Miami Marlins Franchise

          Trade Deadline

The 2019 trade deadline has come and gone and it was a slightly busy one for the Miami Marlins. Nothing major but some players were moved.

          Trade 1
Indians acquire LF Curtis Granderson (38), 67 OVR from the Marlins for RP Josh Smith (29), 58 OVR, C POT.

Granderson was hitting .217 with 2 HRS in limited at-bats with the Marlins. He now gets to join a contender who has injuries in the outfield with Puig and Naquin both out. We get back an ok lefty reliever who has decent numbers in AA.
          2019 stats:
          Granderson (MLB)- .217 AVG/.642 OPS, 4 HR, 15 RBI
Smith (AA)- 22.1 IP, 3.63 ERA, 1.61 WHIP

          Trade 2:
Cubs acquire 1B Neil Walker (33), 72 OVR and 1B Peter O’Brien (28), 62 OVR from the Marlins for SP Duane Underwood Jr. (24), 65 OVR, B POT.

Neil Walker has been having a great season .269 AVG, 22 HR, 62 RBI while being a versatile fielder. He fills the needs for DH in the Cubs lineup (I have DH turned on for NL) and can play where ever else is needed. Threw them Peter O’Brien as they had no depth at 1B and he wasn’t really needed in Miami. We get back an exciting MLB ready starter in Underwood Jr. who was never going to get a shot with the cubs. They had lots of starter depth ahead of him after previous moves that got them Zach Wheeler and Mike Foltynewicz.
          2019 stats:
          Walker- .269 AVG, 22 HR, 62 RBI
          O’Brien (AAA)- .220 AVG, 8 HR, 37 RBI
Underwood Jr. (AAA)- 123.0 IP, 3.73 ERA, 1.33 WHIP

          Trade 3:
Giants acquire RF Cesar Puello (27), 72 OVR, C POT from the Marlins for 1B Roberto Ramos (24), 67 OVR, C POT.

Thought this was a fair trade for both sides who get a position of need using their depth at other positions. Puello is still young with some potential and will be the giants backup outfielder. He was blocking some of our prospects in our system so I was willing to move him and got back a 1st baseman which was something we could use.
          2019 stats:
Puello (MLB)- .214 AVG, 6 HR, 15 RBI, 12 SB
Ramos (AAA)- .246 AVG, 16 HR, 51 RBI

I’m pretty happy with all 3 trades. Considering we didn’t have a big trade piece so we weren’t going to get a big time prospect or anything I really like the players we got back. Smith has some interesting ratings (both velocity and break are in the high 90s), Underwood looks promising and Ramos has a really good bat. The deals also clear some roster spots for prospects already in our system. We called up OF Lewis Brinson and 1B Lewin Diaz both who hopefully will be important parts in our future. Also, Duane Underwood Jr. will get a rotation spot for us so I’m excited to see what he can do.

A major trade that happened around the trade deadline was with the blue jays and Yankees. The Yankees acquired Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for Devi Garcia, Jasson Dominguez and Miguel Andujar.

As a jays fan, this hurts to see but that return could be absolutely amazing. Garcia and Dominguez both have extremely high potential and Andujar basically replaces Vlad at third. Obviously, it’s completely unrealistic but I thought I would share as it is a pretty cool trade.

Not an official update or anything, but really wanted to share that we swept the Pirates to open up May, regaining sole possession of first place in the central. Felt great! Lol

As the saying goes, two out of three ain't bad!! that is a series victory over the Regaining AL West champs. I'm SO glad that Brad peacock is NO LONGER a starting pitcher. Because if he was he would rule over me with an iron fist. I just for whatever reason can not hit off him at all.

the first major hurdle for me on all-star difficulty down (the Astros) Now onto hurdle number two with the Angels. The Angels currently hold down the third spot in the division with a 17-10 record. 3.5 games back of us. Only one-half game back of the second-place Mariners.

Here are the pitching matchups for the upcoming four-game weekend series in Anaheim.

                    Game #1

                    Kendall Graveman (2-0, 1.63) Vs. Andrew Heaney (1-0, 3.54)

                    Game #2

                    Sean Manaea (2-0, 2.54) Vs. Erasmo Ramirez (2-1, 3.00)

                    Game #3

                    Daniel Mengden (4-1, 2.78) Vs. Nick Tropeano (2-1, 2.23)

                    Game #4

                    Jharel Cotton (3-1, 2.76) Vs. Shohei Ohtani (1-2, 7.16)

Oh not to make too much of it but the Angels are coming into this series scorching hot. Winning eight straight games.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Okay, let's get down to this. I posted before about my Detroit Tigers in MLB The Show 18, and the draft I had. Well, I am glad to say that I was gifted a copy of The Show 19, so I carried that franchise over. I'm excited to use Brett Perez, Odell Cooley, Fernando Beccera, Eric Coker and Robby Haynes in this game. Perez, Cooley and Beccera are going to be the building blocks for the future of this team on offense.

But let's talk about the 2018 season, and what a dismal showing the Tigers put on. Finishing the season at 53-109, they flirted with their own historic 119-loss season of 2003. There were no bright spots on the roster with Michael Fulmer missing most of the season with an injury and Matthew Boyd being relegated to the AAA squad for more than half of the season. Miguel Cabrera put up numbers that showed he still had something left, at least, and Castellanos was decent, at least. And we managed to find a couple strong bullpen pieces in Buck Farmer, who put up outstanding numbers especially considering his overall, and Daniel Norris, who was a swingman piece alternating between the bullpen and the starting rotation.

With such a horrible season from many players, even though we had to be sellers at the Trade Deadline, you can imagine we weren't getting much return from any team. We did pick up a couple potentially decent prospects, but all in all it was pretty much a wash.

                      Trade Deadline Deals:
Tigers trade SS Jose Iglesias to the New York Yankees for 1B Greg Bird(68/B) and RHP Cale Cashow(56/C).
This was our biggest trade, and the one that may seem the most odd. Why would the Yankees need a shortstop? Gleyber Torres, Didi Gregorius and Walker were all injured for the Yankees, with none of them projected to return. Or, if they did, it would be late in a potential postseason run. They were four games back of the Red Sox in the division and only two games up in the Wildcard, so they didn't have much margin for error. Iglesias was solid offensively for us and still great defensively, so he instantly upgraded that position for New York, and we were not going to retain him with his potential asking price. Greg Bird was the big get, if he can stay healthy, of course. He had just come off yet another stint on the IL, and you could imagine the Yankees were tired of waiting to see if he could stay healthy. We have the time to wait. Cashow is an intriguing bullpen piece. He has good control of his pitches with good velocity, and limits walks pretty well. Cashow posted a 1.72 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 36.2 innings at AAA for the Yanks.

Tigers trade OF Leonys Martin to the San Francisco Giants for 3B Jacob Gonzalez(59/C)
Getting anything for Martin was a huge steal for us. Martin struggled heavily at the plate, barely hitting above .200 for most of the season. His saving grace was his defense and his speed; Martin was relegated to a bench role for us, coming in late in games as a defensive replacement or pinch runner. This was something the Giants needed. With Longoria on the major league team and prospects Miguel Gomez and T.J. Bennet ahead of him, Gonzalez was a decent player to take a flyer on. Gonzalez had a solid bat, but lacks slightly in discipline and patience, which can develop. There's also a little pop in his bat, which is nice at his position. Gonzalez was batting .273/.327/.414 in 99 at bats at AA with 3 homeruns and 16 RBI's.

Tigers trade RHP Mike Fiers to the Oakland Athletics for RHP Logan Shore(66/C)
A move that mirrored the real-life trade for the Tigers, it actually made sense in this universe as well. Oakland was 2.5 games back of the Wildcard, and needed a fourth or fifth-type starter. Fiers was one of our brighter spots with peripherals that were better than what his numbers showed. With prospects like A.J. Puk, Jesus Luzardo, Grant Holmes and Raul Alcantara ahead of him, Shore was an expendable piece. Already having good control and break on his pitches, he is good at limiting walks, but won't strike out many batters. Shore posted a 2.88 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 68.2 innings at the AA level.

Tigers trade LHP Francisco Liriano to the Milwaukee Breewers for RHP Jorge Ortega(59/C)
Same as the Oakland trade. Milwaukee was battling for a playoff spot and needed another starting pitcher. Liriano gave them a veteran pitcher to eat innings. Saddest part is, even with his ERA of nearly 5, he was almost two full runs better than the other pitchers Milwaukee was trying to throw out there every fifth day. Like Logan Shore, Jorge Ortega won't get many strikeouts, but he is good at limiting walks and keeping the ball in the park. At AA Ortega had pitched to a 6-2 record with a 1.63 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, only walking 15 batters in 99.1 innings.

After the trade deadline saw the Tigers call up young players such as outfielders Jason Krizan and Kenny Wilson, catchers John Hicks and Grayson Greiner, infielders Harold Castro and Ronny Rodriguez, and pitchers such as Joe Mantiply, Joe Jimenez, Grayson Long, Sandy Baez and Tyler Alexander up. Wilson, Hicks and Jimenez showed the most promise, and will get an extended look in Spring Training to see if they can step forward.

                        2018 Offseason

After that 109-loss season, changes had to be made. The worst team in the league by more than ten games, quite a few players were not retained. Detroit did catch a break as Victor Martinez retired, which freed up some cap space for them, but the Tigers were not big players in free agency. At least not in signing any real big names.

New management in Detroit went into the offseason with a clear plan: give time for the younger players to develop by signing some stop-gap options to shore up spots on the team. The starting rotation had 3/5 set with Michael Fulmer, Matt Boyd (who improved in the second half of the season) and Jordan Zimmerman as the go-to options. Shane Greene, Buck Farmer, Daniel Norris and Joe Jimenez were slated as bullpen pieces right away. In the field Cabrera, Machado, Candelario, Castellanos and Reyes had spots locked down.

Looking at that, there were plenty of question marks. Bullpen pieces, catcher, starting pitching, middle infield and outfield all had spots open. Even though there were in-house options such as Cashow, Ortega, Perez, Faedo, Manning, Gonzalez, Shore, Jones, Stewart, Lugo, Alcantara and Cameron, this new management wanted to give the young players more time to develop. As such the Tigers made those stop-gap signings.

RHP Kevin Jepsen to a one-year, $2 million dollar contract.
Jepsen posted a 3.57 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP in 80.2 innings last year, striking out 77 batters. He gives a veteran presence in the bullpen after posting a solid season, and comes fairly cheap.

LHP Manny Parra to a 1-year, $1.5 million dollar contract
Parra hasn't played in several years, but gives a left-handed option in the bullpen who is looking to show he still has something. Pretty much a low-risk, medium-reward type of pickup.

RHP Josh Tomlin to a 2-year, $7 million dollar contract
One of the biggest signings for Detroit, and a big surprise. Tomlin went unsigned well into January, and the Tigers jumped on the chance to sign him to eat up innings while allowing younger players to continue developing the minors. Tomlin posted a 12-3 record with a 2.52 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP in 160.2 innings last year. He struck out 98 batters and only walked 18 in that span.

OF Jarrod Dyson to a 2-year, $9 million dollar contract
The second of three "big" signings, Dyson, like Tomlin, was brought in late when nobody was offering him a contract. Putting up a .274/.324/.414 slash last season, Dyson continued showing speed on the bases and solid defense. Knocking in 44 runs and 7 homers, he also put up 33 doubles while only striking out 16.5% of the time.

C Tyler Flowers to a 1-year, $4 million dollar contract
Flowers was brought in to shore up the catcher spot after James McCann was not brought back. This was mainly to allow Hicks the option of playing at first to move Cabrera to a full-time DH spot, but Flowers was pretty good last year as well. Another surprising player not getting contract offers after slashing .278/.348/.414 with 11 homeruns and 46 runs batted in.

IF Wilmer Difo to a 1-year, $2.5 million dollar contract
A solid infield piece, Difo slashed .292/.369/.452 with 7 homeruns and 53 runs batted in last year, and should have had more contract offers. Nobody was offering him one, so the Tigers jumped on him.

The final rounding out of the roster included signing free agent first baseman Kendrick Howe, outfielders Matt Szczur and Aristides Aquino (looking much better knowing what he's doing right now in real life lol), and right handed pitchers Ty Buttrey and Andres Delgaudio.

Kelvin Herrera to Minnesota: 3-years, $15.3 million
Salvador Perez to Los Angels of Anaheim: 5-years, $60.8 million

There were some big trades too (forgot to set up 30-team control when starting the franchise, so I have to live with the stupid trades. Oh well)

                            Miami Marlins Franchise:

End of 2019 season and Offseason

We finished the 2019 season with a record of 71-92 which is better than most expected of us. Harold Ramirez had a great rookie season finishing second in ROY behind Chris Paddack. Brian Anderson had a good year hitting .274 with 20 HR, 68 RBI, 4.1 WAR. Garrett Cooper had a good year finishing with 28 HRS. Jorge Alfaro hit .278 with 18 HR and had a 3.5 WAR which was great to see. Pitching wise Pablo Lopez had a spectacular year pitching over 205 innings with an ERA of 3.02 and whip of 1.27. In the bullpen, Jarlin Garcia had a really good year finishing with 1.54 ERA, 1.08 WHIP in 52 innings.

Two powerhouses collided in the World Series as the Los Angeles Dodgers faced the New York Yankees. The Dodgers made quick work of the yanks and swept them to win their 7th World Series.

Going into free agency our plan was to stay out of it and keep letting our guys get time to develop. We resigned everyone we needed to watched as other teams spend their money. Gerrit Cole went to the Cubs, Marcell Osuna and Anthony Rendon went to the Rangers. We made one minor signing as we signed RP Gerson Moreno (24) 59 OVR, C POT to a 1 year 70K contract. He has good stuff and we were a little low on right-handed relievers in our system so we picked him up. He should have a spot in our AA bullpen next year.

The winter meetings rolled around and it gave us an opportunity to make some moves. After considering moving him at the trade deadline, we made a move and sent RF Garrett Cooper (29) 78 OVR, C POT to the New York Mets in exchange for 3B prospect Mark Vientos (20) 62 OVR, B POT. We also included SS Rosell Herrera (27) 74 OVR, C POT in the trade.
We sold high on Cooper after coming off a pretty good year with us last year. But he just wasn’t in our future plans so we decided now was the best time to move him.

Next year will be another rebuilding year as even more of our prospects will get shots in the MLB including Sixto Sanchez and Jesus Sanchez which will be exciting.

I really hope the Angels didn't actually think they were going to have an easy time of it against the two time reigning champions in this one. As we simply came in and took care of business in game one of this four-game series.

it didn't start out very well as Kendall Graveman looked like he was going to have shell shock after the first inning but limited the damage. He regained his form and pitched six more shut down innings.

Which allowed the offense to settle in and do their thing.

2024 White Sox Franchise - End of April

The 2 time defending Champs start 2024, 20-8.

Sox pitching has dominated opposing hitters to start the season. Not sure where the team would be without the pitching, as the offense hasn't really been there.

We are 23rd in average as a team, only hitting .248 and tied for 22nd in runs scored with 109. In homers we are tied for 26th with 22.

Despite being around the bottom of the league in offense, I am not too concerned as we seem to have always started slow offensively in this franchise.

Pitching leads baseball with a 2.07 ERA , 67 runs allowed and homers allowed with 16. Only 29th in baseball in strikeouts with 222.
