The Rays are in the wildcard race, they actually went and grabbed Ken Giles at the deadline for a few prospects. Zunino is having a terrible season, batting around .150. Stallings and Murphy are both well above-average defenders so I’m good there.

Had a look at Salvador Perez as an offensive upgrade but the contract and asking price were too high.

And as for Manaea, yeah he must have gotten shafted on run support. Looking over the A’s roster, their offense has been decent. They’re out of the race though, in last place and looking to re-tool for next year. They got a boatload of high-ceiling guys from dealing Semien and Manaea so they’ve got a bright future in my universe at least.

      2023 Off-Season Outlook
      November 1, 2023

**Ahhh, the off-season - When I never have any clue what to do. Over the last 7 years, our budget has typically sat around $160M, reaching as high as $165M in 2018. Going into this off-season, we currently have $95M tied up in salaries - the majority of that being made up by LF Conforto ($30.7M), SP Syndergaard ($28M), and RF Davidson ($18.6M). We're also expecting $32.7M in potential arbitration salaries, leaving us about $32M to play with if we re-sign everybody. I would expect that we don't.**

The Free Agent list is short, but it contains three huge pieces of the 2019, 2021, and 2022 World Series Championship teams.

      Exclusive Free Agents (Expecting):
      SS Amed Rosario ($29.9M)
      3B Rafael Devers ($16.7M)
      SP Robert Gsellman ($10M)

Two of these are obvious. Perhaps all three should be. Amed Rosario is looking for essentially $30M per year, a price that is far too steep. Handing out another $30M contract would put 60% of our budget in three players, something that the Mets aren't willing to do.

Gsellman, on the other hand, had the worst professional season of his career in 2023. The Mets would consider him as a minor league flyer for the bullpen, nothing more.

Devers is the question. $16.7M per year for the NL MVP and Triple Crown winner. A no brainer? Duh. But the weakness of this Mets team this last season was their rotation. It wasn't deep enough. Walker Buehler is a fine #3 option, but he hasn't emerged as anything more than that... yet. Noah Syndergaard is near the peak of his career, but make no mistake about it, he's on the way down. Is the $30M now made available, thanks to deGrom retiring, better served going to get a top of the line starter?

The Mets don't have the answer yet. But it leaves me to believe that they'll let Devers hit the open market with a Qualifying Offer ($20.5M) in hand.

Mets Extend Qualifying Offer to 3B Devers and SS Rosario
        November 1, 2023

Both SS Amed Rosario and 3B Rafael Devers were extended Qualifying Offers today, worth $20.5M.

Rosario is seeking upwards of $30M/year this off-season, and this offer is solely to benefit from the compensatory pick when Rosario, and his big price tag, sign elsewhere.

In 6 years with the Mets, Rosario won 3 rings with the team and played ********* defense up the middle. He also managed to slash .255/.328/.362 with 150 2B and 150 SB.

Devers, the reigning NL MVP, is only looking for $16.7M, a very low number considering the production he's been putting up over the last several years.

So far, in 6 years with the Mets, he's hit 135 HR with 430 RBI and 145 2B, while slashing .284/.349/.507. Not to mention the three rings he won alongside Rosario.

All the more reason why the Mets should attempt to keep at least half of the left side of their infield. These two have been an integral part of the most successful run in Mets history, and losing both of them in the same off-season could be detrimental moving forward.

        Mets Pickup Lucroy Team Option

The Mets picked up C Jonathan Lucroy's Team Option today worth $5M. Originally, he was signed to back up and support Harmon Rodriguez, but as the season went on, it became clear Rodriguez's bat is nowhere near MLB ready. Lucroy stepped in beautifully, earning himself the starting job for the rest of the year and next year.

Nick Hundley mashes lefties and is usually sitting in the FA pool long into the season if you need a platoon bat at catcher and a good pinch hitter.

Mets Waste No Time, Land SP Amir Garrett
            November 5th, 2023

With the first move of free agency, the Mets filled the Jacob deGrom void with an absolute steal. LHP Amir Garrett has been targeted by the Mets since they got the deGrom news. They watched the big lefty turn in an NL CY Young season with the Reds, and thought he'd be the perfect replacement.

Garrett started 32 games for the NL Central Champion Reds this year, going 14-4. He threw 190 innings with a 2.97 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP with 196 K.

Garrett will also give the Mets a big lefty arm in the rotation, something they've lacked since Steven Matz signed with the Cardinals in 2022.

Garrett signed for 3 years, $30M with a player option in year 3. The 31 year old will provide leadership and mentorship to the number of young arms in the Met system. Not to mention a deadly 1-2 punch with Syndergaard at the top of the rotation. The Mets went without a second top of the line starter this season, and it hurt them in the postseason.

              PITTSBURGH PIRATES FRANCHISE

              August 5, 2020

The Pirates have hit the skids, 2-4 over our last 6 after dropping consecutive home series to the Cardinals and Brewers. Our pitching just has not been good. A long stretch of games with no off day and some lackluster performances from the starting staff has left our bullpen tired and decimated.

Sean Manaea wasn’t great in his first Bucco start, allowing 5 earned over 5 innings.

It gets worse - righty Trevor Williams exited his start against the Brewers with shoulder soreness in the 3rd inning. Post-game X-rays revealed a minor separation. No surgery is required, but Williams will have to rest and rehab and will be out until at least mid-September, potentially out for the remainder of the season. The timeline is unclear.

So we’ll have to pluck a replacement from AAA. Chad Kuhl, Chris Stratton, and prospect Domingo Robles seem to be the options. Righties Clay Holmes and Dovydas Neverauskas have dominated in AAA, but we most likely need someone with multi-inning potential who can fill in as a long-man or spot starter. Lefty Steven Brault most likely takes Williams’ rotation spot, though he’s been pretty valuable to have in the pen so I haven’t yet made a decision.

The Diamondbacks come to town next for a 4-game set. They’re a game behind us in the wild card, so its a huge series. Seems like a good time to turn things around again.

Mets Bring Back MVP, Devers inks 6yr/$95M Deal
                November 20,2023

The Mets weren't expecting to be able to bring back Rafael Devers after this season because of his presumed lofty price tag, but when they saw what he and his agent were looking for, the Mets pushed aggressively to bring back their third baseman.

The third base market was light this season with just Devers and Alex Bregman highlighting the class. Bregman was looking for upwards of $24M per year, which was far outside what the Mets were looking to spend. Being able to bring back MVP production for two-thirds of the cost of Bregman was a no brainer.

Devers will rejoin Michael Conforto and Eloy Jimenez in the heart of the lineup for the next several years, a fact that NL pitchers are sure to be upset with.

Mets non-tender Rodriguez, Rosas, and Eickhoff

The Mets decided to part ways with several pieces from the big-league club this past season.

C Harmon Rodriguez came into 2023 slotted to be the starting backstop with Jonathan Lucroy backing him up. That quickly changed. Rodriguez was never able to find any semblance of offensive production, and wasn't able to justify keeping his $2M price tag on the books.

CF Ramon Rosas had a productive career with the Mets, and at one point looked like the CF of the future. Signing Eloy Jimenez and Braxton Davidson changed that, though. The OF has very little spare at bats with those two and Conforto, and $3M for a player that will only get about 200 AB during the season isn't worth it.

RHP Jerad Eickhoff was serviceable as a long reliever, but the Mets have younger and cheaper options to fill that role.

Mets Add Bullpen Arm, Sign Eovaldi
                  January 2, 2024

The Mets are bringing in RHP Nathan Eovaldi on a one-year deal worth $5M. He's expected to be a utility man out of the bullpen. He can eat up innings, get big outs, and may make a spot start or two if the situation calls for it.

Eovaldi spent last year with the Cleveland Indians. He pitched 175 innings (all out of the bullpen) with an ERA of 4.16 and WHIP of 1.38. He struckout 128 batters.

Prior to his year in Cleveland, Eovaldi spent the last 8 years in NY as a Yankee. The Mets are hoping a return to familiar geography will get him back on track.

Mets add Brandon Belt for Depth

The Mets have signed veteran first-baseman Brandon Belt to a $2M/1yr deal to provide depth at first base. DJ Peterson is the incumbent starter, but he was injured for much of last season. Steven Logan was excellent in his stead, but is still an unproven commodity. My guess is Belt will start the season in Syracuse and be ready in case of an injury.

Off-Season Wrap-Up and Spring Training Outlook
                    February 21, 2024

All in all, the Mets had a successful off-season. The news of Jacob deGrom's retirement caught many in the organization off guard, but locking up Amir Garrett off an NL CY Young season is not only a great replacement, it's an upgrade. The big splash of the off-season was the return of 3B Rafael Devers, who will be manning the hot corner for the next six years in NY.

                    Key Additions:
                    3B Rafael Devers (6/$95M)
                    LHP Amir Garrett (3/$30M)
                    1B Brandon Belt (1/$2M)
                    RHP Nathan Eovaldi (1/$5M)

                    Key Losses:
                    SS Amed Rosario - Rangers
                    RHP Robert Gsellman - Indians
                    CF Ramon Rosas - Athletics
C Harmon Rodriguez - White Sox
                    RHP Jerad Eickhoff - Rays

While, on the surface, it looks like the roster was upgraded, the most glaring issue heading into Spring Training is depth. Or, more accurately put, the lack of it. The Mets will have several organizational pieces stepping into full-time roles on the big league club for the first time.

                    Outfield Depth
With the departure of CF Ramon Rosas, the 5th outfielder spot is up for grabs. LF Randall Dow and RF Frank Pulido are in the driver's seat for that spot. The issue is that both of them are out of minor league options. This means, that whoever does not get the job, will most likely be claimed on waivers and out of the organization.

                    Infield Depth
The issue here is not offense, it's defense. Specifically, the middle infield positions. Richard Urena will get the start at shortstop with Gene Worley resuming his 2B position, but Worley is known to be injury prone and there aren't a lot of great options in the organization up the middle. 3B Walter Sato has the bat, but his glove is an issue. He's played mostly third, with some corner outfield sprinkled in, during his time in the bigs - which has been an adventure, to say the least. It's been rumored that if one of Pulido or Dow get picked up on Waivers, the Mets will use that roster spot to pursue veteran Free Agent SS Brandon Crawford.

Crawford had 169 AB with the Twins last year, slashing .296/.353/.391 with 11 2B and 13 RBI. Crawford would be brought on for his glove and could play any position in the infield other than first.

                    Rotation/Bullpen Depth
The fifth spot in the rotation is still up for grabs, although RHP Dakota Chalmers has the inside track. Headed into the off-season it looked like it was his, but a disastrous post-season outing and a HUGE winter from 21 year old LHP Julio Fernandez, has Chalmers looking over his shoulder.

The last few spots in the bullpen are also up for grabs. The locks to make the roster are: RHP Nick Burdi, RHP Julio Alvarez, LHP Dan Shoemaker, LHP Steven Vaccaro, RHP Kelvin Herrera, and RHP Nathan Eovaldi.

That leaves two available spots for the likes of LHP Bruno Mora, LHP Sean Machado, RHP Louis Elias, RHP Steve Roy. Mora and Machado are both starting pitcher prospects, but the Mets have a history of breaking in future starters in the bullpen at the major league level.

                      Spring Training Recap
                      March 24, 2020

The Mets finished Spring Training 13-11, winning 7 of their last 9. But, who cares. Let's get to what matters: Who made the roster?

                      Lineup
                      2B Gene Worley
                      SS Richard Urena
                      LF Michael Conforto
                      3B Rafael Devers
                      CF Eloy Jimenez
                      RF Braxton Davidson
                      C Jonathan Lucroy
                      1B DJ Peterson

                      Bench
                      3B Walter Sato
                      C Luke Wray
                      1B Steven Logan
                      OF Alex Jackson
                      OF Frank Pulido

As you can see, Frank Pulido made the roster over Randall Dow. They each had themselves a nice spring, but Pulido was just better, frankly (pun-intended). He's also much younger, and will be able to grow at the major league level with little pressure, thanks to a loaded outfield in NY.

Dow will have to clear waivers to remain with the organization.

The real star of Spring Training, across the entire organization, was 3B Walter Sato. He slashed .500/.586/.773 with 7 RBI in 22 AB. His OPS ended up well over 1.000 - a remarkable 1.359. While Sato may never provide a ton of HR power, he's got plenty of gap to gap power and has ++ contact ability. The Mets were ready to roll with him at 3B if Devers signed elsewhere, and Sato has earned the utility infielder role. If he can play anywhere close to replacement level defense, he'll be a huge asset to this team.

                      Rotation
                      RHP Noah Syndergaard
                      LHP Amir Garrett
                      RHP Walker Buehler
                      RHP Dave Monahan
                      RHP Dakota Chalmers

                      Bullpen
                      RHP Nathan Eovaldi
                      LHP Sean Machado
                      RHP Kelvin Herrera
                      LHP Steven Vaccaro
                      RHP Steve Roy
                      RHP Julio Alvarez
                      LHP Dan Shoemaker
                      RHP Nick Burdi

Dakota Chalmers won the 5th spot in the rotation by default, thanks to a migraine issue that kept Julio Fernandez from pitching this Spring. Fernandez will be waiting in the minors and will most likely be the first call up due to injury or underperformance.

Chalmers was good this spring, posting a 1.20 ERA in 4 starts. The big issue with the rotation was Dave Monahan, whose ERA was 6.50+ in 5 starts. Monahan had a productive season last year as the third starter, which is the only reason he'll be starting the season with the big league club. He's officially been put on notice.

LHP Sean Machado showed the ability to be effective out of the bullpen, only surrendering 3 runs in 13 innings. He'll start the season in the bullpen, with RHP Steve Roy claiming the last roster spot. He had a better spring then RHP Louis Elias, and will get more of an opportunity to showcase his stuff this year.

In 18 innings last year, he struck out 20 batters, although he did give up 14 ER.
If Roy can get command of his electric stuff, he can be a solid option for the 7th inning down the line.

The Mets open their 2024 season with a 4-game series at home against the Miami Marlins, quickly followed by another 3-game home-series against the Phillies.

It's no secret that the Mets will be chomping at the bit to avenge their early postseason exit at the hands of the eventual NL Champion Marlins.

**Welp, the roster is set and I'm ready to start the 2024 season. Sorry for inundating the thread with posts over the last few days, but I wanted to make sure I was providing updates throughout the playoffs and off-season.

I still shake my head when I think about how 2023 ended. Yikes. This might be the least depth I've ever had on a team, and it has me worried, I won't lie. 2B Gene Worley has a durability rating of 33, and has to sit every 4th day/is constantly dealing with injuries. Luckily, when he is on the field he's a .320 hitter.

If the injury bug bites this team in any way, we might be in big trouble - especially in the middle of the infield. I do not have other options within the organization that I feel comfortable about starting for an extended period of time at either of those positions.

                      Let's play some baseball**

The White Sox come into Atlanta and win the 3 game series.

The White Sox won the game 1 5-2 and game 5-2. Da@n! Game 1: Folty and Rodon both went 7.0IP strong, giving up 2ER's each. Turned it over to their bullpen respectively. I noticed during my scouting before playing them, that their bullpen was tough. The unexpected happen Vizzy gave up 3ER. Their bullpen stayed staunched hurling 2 shutdown innings for the win & save. CWS win 5-2!

Game 2: The lefty Newcomb on the bump. The offense gave him an early 3R lead. The White Sox scored 2R in the 4th and that was all! Freeman & Heyward provided the offense production. Freeman went 3 for 4, 2B & 2RBI. Heyward went 1 for 4, but his Solo HR got us on the board. Newcomb went 6.0IP,2ER,0BB & 2K for his 10th victory on the year. We won 4-2!

Game 3: Our best & most consistent starter the 17-5, Max Fried. The White Sox countered with hard throwing young stud, Reynaldo Lopez. Fried got shelled early! Gave up 4ER in 5IP. All of the runs were 4 solo shots. Lopez dominated my offense: 7.0IP,9H,2ER,1BB & 9K. Giving him his 10th victory of the year. We lost 5-2!

My record is now 77-61. We lost game back to the front running Mets. We are now 5.0GB of 1st place in the NL East. I am still squeezing tightly to the top seed of the Wild Card by 0.5 gm over the D-backs. The wildcard is were the race is 5 team race: The Cards are 73-63 2.5GB, Reds 75-62 1.0GB, Nats 75-61 0.5GB. We are about to take on the Blue Jays for 2gms, hopefully we can sweep them again. Then we control our playoff destiny: The Nats are in town for four games.......

                          PITTSBURGH PIRATES FRANCHISE

                          August 7, 2020

A few transactions to report. We recalled RHP Chad Kuhl from AAA Indianapolis to replace the injured Trevor Williams. Kuhl broke camp with the team after spring training, but struggled to an ERA over 7 in 40+ MLB innings before being optioned. He’s been more than solid in AAA, pitching to an ERA under 3, with a +9 K/9 and -3 BB/9. Hopefully he’s turned things around and can contribute. He’ll share a swingman role with lefty Steven Brault, with each of them filling the 5th starter role as needed. That will require some finessing but we have to do what we have to do.

I love storylines and here’s a good one. We claimed utilityman Derek Dietrich off waivers from the rival Reds. You may remember from last season - Dietrich hot dogged a home run off Chris Archer and sparked a bench-clearing brawl between the Pirates and Reds. It was the first of a couple dust-ups between the two teams that season. Archer and Dietrich will have to make nice now since they’ll be teammates.

Dietrich signed a minor league deal with the Reds before the season and has spent the majority of the year in AAA. He got his return chance in the majors when Josh Van Meter went down with an injury, but when Van Meter returned Dietrich was placed on optional waivers and we bit. He fits a MAJOR need for us - he’s got double-plus power against righties. He’s also a solid-average defender who can play first, second, third, or a corner outfield spot, and has an above-average arm.

In a corresponding move, we placed utilityman JT Riddle on outright waivers. Riddle has been valuable for us off the bench as a part-time contributor, but ultimately this team lacks the home run power that Dietrich potentially provides. Hopefully Riddle clears, I’d like to keep him.

The feel in Pittsburgh this year is different. A capacity crowd of 38,000+ rose in unison on Thursday night as reserve infielder Erik Gonzalez muscled up a first-pitch hanging splitter from Diamondbacks reliever Junior Guerra, breaking a 4-4 tie with a screaming line drive just beyond the left field foul pole in the bottom of the 7th. It was just his second home run of the season, but his 4th hit of the night against a key wild card opponent. The crowd would rise again in thunderous ovation 30 minutes later as closer Keone Kela pumped a 97 mph fastball past pinch-hitter Maikel Franco for the final out.

The next day, new Pirate slinger Sean Manaea would lock up with Madison Bumgarner to send a scoreless game into extra innings. It was the best start of any Pirates pitcher this season: 9 scoreless innings with 8 K’s and just 3 hits allowed. The Pirates would win it in the 11th in walkoff fashion, making it 2 in a row against the rival DBacks.

2 more against Arizona before hitting the road. Its been a brutal stretch with no off days but the Pirates are hanging tough. We are 2 games out of the division and now have a 2.5 game lead on the DBacks for the second wild card spot.

                            Cardinals take series against Reds

The Cardinals got the 2026 season off to a good start by taking 2 games of the 3 game series with the Reds in Cincinnati.

The Cardinals won on Opening Day and then the Sunday series finale to win the series and dropped game 2 on Saturday.

Opening Day saw the Cardinals win 9-6 in a slugfest at Great American Ballpark as the teams combined to hit 7 homeruns on a day where the wind was blowing out to straight left at a clip of 12mph. GABP is already known to be a homerun hitters paradise, but with the wind blowing out, it seemed routine popups were finding the seats. The teams traded runs troughout the game, but the Cardinals would take a 6-5 lead in the 7th thanks to a Dylan Carlson 2 run homerun. In the 9th, the lead was extended to 9-5 after Paul DeJong's pinch hit 3 run homerun on the first pitch he saw in 2026. The Reds would tack on a run in the bottom of the 9th but the Cardinals were able to put an end to the rally to earn their first win of the 2026 season.

Game 2 was a 4-1 loss for the Cardinals as Reds new first baseman D.J. Peterson would hit two homeruns and be the offense for the Reds in a 4-1 victory. The Cardinals lone run was a solo homerun by Devon Snow in the 5th. The Cardinals just couldn't get the bats going only earning 4 hits on the day.

Game 3 saw Josh Rogers make his Cardinal debut on the mound and he went 6 strong innings recording 7 strikeouts but he would get a no decision. The Reds jumped out 2-0 early when Nolan Gorman tried to barehand a chopper, miss and the ball rolled into left field breaking the ice in the scoring column and resulted in the Reds getting 2 runs when they should've had the side retired. Dylan Carlson would have a day at the plate after coming in for an injured Juan Fabregas, going 4 for 4 including hitting the game tying homerun in the 9th and the go ahead/winning homerun in the 13th as the Cardinals won 5-3.

The Cardinals will travel to Milwaukee for a 3 game series with the Brewers. Dakota Hudson, Junior Fernandez, and Kyle Funkhouser will be the starters for the series.

Juan Fabregas injured in series finale

Stop me if you've heard this before. Juan Fabregas is injured.

The 30 year old Fabregas injured his tricep sliding into second base and is currently listed as day to day. The Cardinals haven't placed him on the IL, as they are hoping he's able to bounce back quickly. Fabregas is hitting .300 with a homerun and 2 RBI's on the young season.

If the Cardinals do place him on the IL, expect Connor Capel to be recalled from Memphis to fill the roster vacancy.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Can you sue the Indians organization for sending Fabregas back to you? They must have had a change of heart after reviewing his medicals...

                                Cardinals drop series to Brewers

The Cardinals (3-3) dropped 2 of the 3 games against the Brewers in Milwaukee. The Brewers won the first two of the series, but the Cardinals were able to avoid the sweep by winning Wednesday afternoon's series finale.

The Cardinals just couldn't get their bats going in this series and the bullpen aside from the series finale was shaky at best with Jordan Hicks and Tyler Jay blowing up in game 2 on Tuesday.

The Cardinals will look to rebound from this series as they head to Busch Stadium for the first time this year for a 7 game homestand with the Orioles coming in for 3 and the Dodgers for 4.
