Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Ok I’m a little behind still playing 17 that was started with 14 to eventually catch up to current day. I’m the Mets. Just played the most exciting WS in my Show history. I was about a month or so into the season and was pretty far ahead in the standings. So to catch up a little quicker I started using critical situations and/or quick manage. Still ended up with best record 96-66 I believe.

Divisional round I played Arizona and won series 3-1. NLCS I played the Dodgers. Swept them 4-0. Side note Kershaw was Kershaw(in the playoffs). I beat him pretty easily.

The WS... it was a tightly gritty 4-2 WS win for the Mets. Every game was a one or two run game that came down to the end. Mets went up 2-0, Orioles won game three. Game four was stolen by the Mets. I was losing 2-0 the whole game(my hitting was terrible) but in the ninth the bats woke up and scored three runs to win the game. Orioles won game five. Game six Mets we’re losing 1-0 most of the game but scratched two runs(both Sac Flies) and held on to win the game 2-1.

Cardinals have a decision to make

The Cardinals have been offered a trade by the Rays that they are taking under serious consideration.

The Cardinals top free agent target this winter was LHP/reliever Yoan Aybar when he hit the open market. Unfortunately they were outbid by, you guessed it, the Rays.

The Rays top free agent target, besides Aybar, was catcher Keibert Ruiz who ended up signing with the Royals.

The Cardinals acquired former backstop Andrew Knizner from the Reds in a trade early in the offseason. Now, in December they are being offered one from the Rays.

Can you put the dots together?

      The proposal:

      Cardinals get Yoan Aybar

Rays get Andrew Knizner, Connor Capel, and LHP Antoine Kelly

I think most of the time the Cardinals turn this offer down and go about their offseason. This offseason though, with pitching being a focus and left handed relief being a priority, and with the market extremely thin at that particular position, they are now having to think twice about this offer.

Jose Quijada turned down the Cardinals to go to the Royals. Jonny Venters retired. Proven left handed relievers are thin. Corey Littrell did accept a one year offer to continue. But Aybar is 28 years old, has a five year, $33MM contract that pays him $5M this year, and the annual value increases one million per year thru 2032, when Aybar will be 32 years old and ready to get one more big contract.

What do the Cardinals do? They wanted Knizner for the load they gave up. They want Aybar, but the load given up is doubled in a sense that they give up Capel and Kelly along with the players they sent to Cincinnati (Sang, Javier, Gilchrist)

So what do they do? The Rays aren't going to be patient as the catching market is slim pickens at this point. The Cardinals still have Snow, depth at the position and just signed Francisco Alvarez, a 19 year old highly touted prospect.

Do you roll the dice with the bullpen you have knowing finding a significant left handed reliever is going to be difficult via free agency so trade is the best market? Do you give up obtaining your primary target this winter in favor of keeping a beloved backstop who at 32 is on the backend of his career, but is extremely productive and has been on the roster of the last two World Series Champions?

Or do you make the trade, turn the reigns to Snow for another year and see how he does, all the while developing the talent you have at the position in case he falters again and you need to make a change next season?

What do the Cardinals do? Decisions...decisions.

Down 2-1 I was able to string together two wins in LA to send things back to Citi Field up 3-2. Game 4 Steven Matz was magnificent, pitching 6.2 innings of shutout ball as we went on to win 1-0. Game 5, Syndergaard allowed three runs in six innings, his worst start of the post season. Down 3-2 in the seventh, Jeff McNeil hit a two run blast to give us a 4-3 lead but then in the 8th Edwin Diaz did what Edwin Diaz does and blew the lead. Tied 4-4 in the top of the 9th and the Dodgers opt not to bring in Kenley Jansen as Jeff McNeil hit another two run home run as we went on to win 6-4.

Game 6 and Porcello got beat up for three runs in the first and that was all LA would need as Kershaw was spectacular, pitching nine innings of two hit ball for a 5-1 win. Now it’s on to game 7, deGrom vs David Price

Mid way through May the Phillies sit at 26 and 21, tied with the Braves for first place in the East. The pitching has been keeping the Phillies afloat while the offense looks to find its way.

Rumors say the Phillies are looking aggressively for a big bat in a trade revolves around Rhys Hoskins who has two years of control left

One name that keeps coming up is Kris Bryant who will become a free agent. The rumored package to get Bryant seems to be Hoskins, Bryson Stott and Mick Abel who are the Phillies two top prospects in an otherwise weak farm system.

As the season progresses the Phillies will start to entertain the thought of getting Bryant to help make a push at the post season. But is all of that worth it? Especially when it’s not known if Bryant can even fit in the payroll come next season.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Through May the Phillies at just 32-29 still sit in first place in the East as the rest of the division refuses to get it going.

            Braves 31-29
            Marlins 28-31
            Nationals 27-32
            Mets 26-32

The offensive struggles continue for the Phillies. Andrew McCutchen and Rhys Hoskins are hitting just .244 each. Harper is sitting at .217 12 36. Jean Segura and Adam Hasley have stabilized the offense some with Segura hitting .275-10-32 and Hasley hitting .30-8-20.

The pitching staff has kept the Phillies in games. Aaron Nola is carrying a 3.15 era with a 1.38 whip while Zach Wheeler continues to impress with a 2.63 era and a 0.99 whip. Spencer Howard is growing into something special as he has struck out 89 batter in 79.1 innings with a 3.29 era and a 1.36 whip.

The bullpen which was fantastic through April did struggle in May as only 4 of the 8 arms have an era under 4.

The Phillies still being in the hunt for the division increase the chances of being buyers at the deadline. But how much longer can they truly hold on without making a move early enough? But with a move to early they run the risk of selling the farm and still faltering down the stretch.

Cardinals sign Matthew Liberatore to 3 year deal

The Cardinals have stuck a deal with LHP Matthew Liberatore that will add depth to a pitching staff that needs just that.

The Cards and Liberatore agreed to a 3 year deal that will pay the 26 year old just over $1M annually. Liberatore was not offered a contract by the Rays after he appeared in 17 games last year, all relief appearances, and compiled a 1-5 record with an ERA over 6 and a WHIP over 2, in 32 innings of work.

The Cardinals are hopeful that a change of scenery as well as the opportunity to start instead of pitching out of the bullpen will yield a change in performance outcome for the young left hander.

Pitching has been the Cardinals primary target this offseason and they continue to add controllable depth on team friendly (low cost) contracts.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

It’s the All-Star break and the Phillies have a couple representatives. Closing pitcher Archie Bradley gets in with a 3.72 era and a 1.34 with 30 saves in 35 opportunities. And JT Realmuto is the lone bat. He finished the first half hitting .260 with a .313 obp .428 slg and .741 ops with 9 hrs and 46 rbi. The Phillies offense

The Phil’s sit in second in the NL East at 50 and 47 trailing the 51 and 45 Braves by just a game and a half. And just a half game out of the top Wild Card spot.

Again the Phillies have not reached the post season since 2011 so the thought process is a tough one. Originally they were kicking tires on Kris Bryant but that trade would have involved Hoskins, Abel and Stott. The Phillies top two prospects. They seem to be knowing moving their attention towards the Mariners Kyle Seager to come DH as he is in the last year of his contract. For budget reasons the trade would need to involved Jean Segura who is hitting .246 16-51 and just a .287 obp while Seager is batting just .239 with 4 hrs and 17 rbi as he has only participated in 31 games this season.

The Phillies want to hold on to Hoskins as he has turned his season around and is currently hitting .259 18-56 with a .351 obp. They will be sleeping on this to see what their move if any will be.

With Andrew McCutchon hitting the 60 day with a torn rotator cuff the Phillies were forced to move early. With 4 days to go before the deadline they sent a struggling Jose Alvardo, Backup catcher Andrew Knapp and SS Arquimedes Gamboa. Three guys with a few years each of control left. As Dickerson they surely weren’t going to resign.

Dickerson will end up being an upgrade over Cutch and this doesn’t take attention off Seager or Bryant.

Well the trade deadline came and went and the Phillies were active. They have dropped to .500 but sit a game out of the wild card.

They acquired 2Bman Adam Frazier and LHRP Sam Howard from the Pirates for Craig Stammen, Vince Velasquez and catcher Rafael Marchan.

Then they called up the Mariners and grabbed Kyle Seager for 24 year old pitching prospect Mauricio Llovera, Cole Irvin and Jean Segura.

The Phillies playoff push lineup will look like this....
                  LF-Dickerson
                  1B-Hoskins
                  RF-Harper
                  C-Realmuto
                  SS-Gregorius
                  3B-Bohm
                  DH-Seager
                  2B-Frazier
                  CF-Hasley

See ya in September for the next update.

                    Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Yankees and Cubs Set to Start World Series At Wrigley
The 2024 World Series will have Chicago facing off against the last team that was in the position for a 4 peat: the New York Yankees. The ’24 version the Bronx Bombers struggled out the gate as the Rays had led the division for much of the year. New York was able to find its stride late in the season. It took an impressive run by New York and an epic collapse by Tampa Bay for the Yankees to make the playoffs; the Rays had a 4.5 games lead heading into the last week of the season only to watch the Yankees advance to the World Series from their couches. The Yankees still have home run machine Giancarlo Stanton but have tried to get by with speed on the basepaths and good defense. Jasson Dominguez has been in the majors the last 2 seasons, while his bat still is not up to pair, he has played excellent defense and lead the AL in stolen bases. Only with Dominguez the Yankees have Victor Robles who was 3rd in stolen bases for New York. The Yankee’s run was made even more impressive by the fact they have made it this far without a 300-dollar man. Gerrit Cole was in the running for the AL Cy Young before a quad injury forced him out the last month of the season. Cole ended up being a scratch from the playoff roster but has been able to nurse himself back into shape and will now face off against the Cubs in game 1 from Wrigley. The Cubs went with Jacob DeGrom. The Cubs tweaked their line up to get the most out of Oscar Colas and allow Hendricks to rest after pitching in game 6 of the NLCS. The Cubs will have ### for game two while Hendricks will pitch when the series heads to the Big apple for game 3.
The Cubs were able to control game 1 from early on as they took advantage of Cole’s rust from an extended layoff. The score was quickly 2-0 after Kris Bryant got a single and Rizzo slapped a 2-run home run in the 1st. The Cubs poured it on in the 5th as Rizzo hit his 2nd home run of the day. In the end Cole could only muster 4 innings giving up 7 hits and 6 runs. DeGrom was able to shake off his poor performance against Arizona as he only gave up 1 run through 8 innings. The Cubs made an odd choice with the game in hand as DeGrom remained in the game to pitch the 9th. DeGrom would get the first 2 outs before giving up a 2-run shot to make it ##-3. DeGrom’s line would end up 8.2 innings with 5 hits and 3 runs on 11 K’s but many would wonder why they wouldn’t save their star for another game as DeGrom threw over 100 pitches and likely won’t be available until game 6 or game 7 if needed. Some pointed disrespect of the Yankee’s lineup lead to this situation as the Cubs do not think the Yankees lineup will have much success outside of Gleber Torres and Stanton. The Cubs manager denied these rumors, stating that DeGrom had shown no signs of fatigue until the 8th and wanted to give the 35 a chance to make the most out of his first world series start.
                    Game Two
In Game 2 Brailyn Marquez got the start against Louis Severino. Severino had a solid season and has been the Yank’s Ace with Cole out this postseason. The Cubs were able to strike in the 2nd as Danny Santana doubled to lead off the inning and Brailyn brought in a run on a single. To make it 1-0. In the 3rd the Yankees were able to strike back. With 2 outs and a man on Anthony Siegler was able to reach on a error by Kris Bryant; Gleyber Torres would take advantage of the mental mistake as he was able to knock in a run on a single to left. Severino was able to allow just 2 runs in 6 innings and struck out 5 as he left the game tied 2-2 but the Yankees were able to move ahead in the 7th as Edgar Martinez was able to hit a 2 run shot off Marquez which ended his day. The Cubs would respond in the half of the inning to make it 4-4 on a solo home run by Schwarber and RBI single by Oscar Colas.
With the game still tied the Yankees would try to muster a rally and JP Crawford was able to pull through for a pinch hit solo home run. Down by run the Cubs needed magic of their own. With 1 out Mariano Velaquez got a rare plate appearance the speedster had come in earlier in the game as a pinch runner. The young outfielder made the most of his only at bat in the post season to this point, with a screamer to left center field that landed him on 2nd. The Cubs were able to put runners at the corners when Victory Reyes got a pop fly to land. Brennan Davis was due up next and would push the game into extras on a sacfiice to right field.

The score would remain 5-5 in the bottom of the 9th the Cubs were running out of hitters and turned to Miguel Amaya to bat for Emmanuel Clase with 1 out. Former Cub Aroldis Chapman was in and was able to get the young catcher to a 1-2 count. Chapman went with the heat to try and get the strike out but Amaya was waiting for it and hit a no doubter to be the savior of game 2. The Cubs will head to the Big Apple in walk off fashion after the 6-5 game.

                    Game 3
In game 3 a well rested Kyle Hendricks was able to take on Carlos Rodon as the Cubs looked to take firm control of the series. The Cubs jumped on the Yankees as Javy baez hit a solo home run to make it 1-0. JD Martinez got the start as DH and got on a single up the middle. The Cubs would go up quickly 3-0 after Miguel Amaya blasted his 2nd home run as he went to deep left field. Amaya’s day was not done as he would hit another 2 run home run as the Cubs went up 4-0 in the 4th. The Yankee’s had no counter for Hendricks as he breezed through the lineup and had a perfect game through 6 innings. Hendricks had all his pitches working and the change up was confusing and frustrating the Yankees. New York would break up the shot at perfection in the 7th as they got 3 consecutive hits to make it 6-1. Hendricks would go back to the mound in the 8th but would give up another run and after getting 1 out the professor found himself with the bases loaded. Hendricks was able to get the ground ball and prevented a run from scoring but his day would come to an end. Kyle Ryan would come in with the bases juiced and 2 outs but got the swinging strike 3 on a high cutter that cut the Yankee’s potential rally short. Ryan would go on to get the final 3 outs in the 9th as the Cubs take game 3 6-2.

                    Game 4
The Cubs were thinking of the sweep to cap off their 4th consecutive championship. The Yankees current formation called for the use of their speed to generate runs but Chicago was able keep their speedsters off base and have prevented the big inning. AJ Puk would get the call to end the 2024 season as he woud face Jefry Rodriguez. The Yankees were able to jump out quick as Torres single set up a 2 run home run by Stanton. The Cubs would respond in the next innings as Javy would start off with a triple Oscar Colas got the end of a ball to ground to the first base side to allow Baez to score. Danny Santana was up next and proceeded to tie the game with a towering solo shot. Rodgriguez started to unravel as he allowed consecutive walks to Victory Reyes and Brennan Davis to reset the order with no outs. Kris Bryant would ground into what should have been a double play but Brendan Rodgers let the ball scoot past him to load the bases for the Anthony Rizzo; Rizzo was able to work the count and then sliced a ball between the 2nd basemen and first as the Cubs would add 4 in the inning to make it 4-2. Rodriguez would only go 4 innings while giving up 5 hits, 3 walks and allowing 4 runs.
The Yankees would draw closer in the 7th as a Patrick Wisdom solo home run would make it 4-3. Kyle Ryan would get called on to get the Cubs through the 8th he was able to get the first out before allowing a single to Seigler. Victory Robles would hit into a grounder but the Cubs would not be able to turn the double play. The Cubs manager would make the slow walk to the mound and would call in Emmanuel Clase to get the final 4 outs. With the tying run at first Edgar Martinez was able to work the count full. Clase thru his 100 mph cutter high and inside and jammed Martinez as he harmless popped out to Rizzo at first.the Cubs would go 1-2-3 in the top of the 9th as Clase would have to face the heart of the New York order to end the series. First up would be Gleyber Torres. He would quickly get into a favourable count 2-0; needing a strike Clase would try to get the heat past Torres but was nearly taken deep to tie the game; Torres just missed squaring up the ball and it would fall for an out at the warning track. Clase would next face Stanton but would get ahead and mowed him down with a 1-2 fastball high inside for the swinging K. Jasson Dominguez would be the Yankees last hope. Clase would induce a ground ball by the young phenom but it was deep in the hole at first. For any other runner it would be a routine out but with Dominguez top flight speed it was anything but. Clase raced to the bag as he realized the 35 year old Rizzo would not be the runner. Clase received the ball it would take him sliding into 1st to even make it close. The first base umpire would empathically call Dominguez out as the Cubs dogpiled Clase . Replay would confirm that Clase did indeed make the play to preserve the win. As they have been the last 3 season the Cubs are the Champions of baseball, this time after the 4-3 win sealed the sweep.

Miguel Amaya would be named as World Series MVP as his performance in games 2 and 3 catapulted the Cubs with 3 home runs including a walk off in game 2. Javy Baez was named NLCS MVP after hitting .340 and having timely hits to get the Cubs to the Fall Classic.

I have a very simple question. Given all the interest in Franchise, has it ever been considered as justifying having its own forum like Rosters or Sliders?

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Game 7 I got eight innings of two run ball out of deGrom and cruised to a 6-2 victory and a trip to the World Series against Boston. It’s been a nostalgic post season, I faced both the teams we faced in 2015 to get to the World Series and now we’ve got an 86 rematch with Boston.

Game one Syndergaard got shelled, giving up six runs in five innings. We made things interesting with a three run eighth to pull within 6-4, but an insurance run in the 9th made the lead too much to overcome and we lost 7-4. Thanks to the extra off days after the NLCS I was able to start deGrom game two and he tossed seven shutout innings as we cruised to a 5-0 victory to even the series up as we head to Boston.

It’s September and while the Phillies offense continues to struggle, they still hold the second Wild Card spot by 4 games over the Nationals while trailing the Braves in the division by 8.5.

The Phillies have scored 533 runs this year while allowing 554. This is not a formula to live by.

Hoping for a better offensive September that carries this team into the post season.

Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024-25 OffSeason

JD Martinez Calls it a Career and gets Hall Bid
JD Martinez was the most notable player to retire. The DH ended his career as a champion as with the Cubs. Martinez did not play much in his farewell tour; the slugger was a liability in the outfield and had under 120 at bats on the year. His play was also shortened with the June signing of Jose Abreu as he took many of the pinch hit at bats against lefties. Martinez will enter the Hall of Fame as he hit .301 and 410 home runs in his 14 year career.
Jose Abreu made news by not retiring. The 1st baseman was a mid season addition after failing to catch on with a team as he rehabbed an injury suffered in the postseason in 2023. The Cubs took a swing at the Cuban born righty and he excelled against lefties as he spelled Anthony Rizzo for most of the season. Abreu announced that he would like to continue his career but the Cubs are mum on whether they will try to retain the 37 year old.

                            Chicago Makes Pitch to Bryant
Kris Bryant struggled in the past season as he had one of his lowest averages in his bright career. Bryant and the Cubs could not reach a deal but continued talks through the season before Bryant announced that he was calling off talks until after the season. Bryant hit under .260 but had a power run late to still have somewhat respectable numbers. The Cubs offered a tendered contract as well as a long term contract cut Bryant stated he will take his time and potentially listen to other offers.

In other news Kyle Hendricks and Jacob DeGrom opted into the final year of their deals. Both right handers had player options, including DeGrom's a that will pay him over 28 million in 2025. The Cubs exercised their club option for Carl Edwards Jr but the reliever declined his player option, making him a free agent. The Cubs have stated they will try to sign the set up man but the belief is there that Edwards is looking for a chance to be the closer after a successful 2nd stint in Chicago. Chicago Also declined the team option for Victor Reyes and did not extend a exclusive offer, making the outfielder a free agent. The word on the street is the Cubs will not pursue the switch hitter as they will give Brennan Davis the keys to center field for the time being. Reyes was able to rebound to put up solid numbers in his 2 years with the Cubs after a lost season with the Yankees in which a ACL injury cost him the entire season.

The Phillies 2021 season has come to an end at the hands of the 91 win Brewers by a score of 3-2.

The Brewers scored one in the first and one more in the second on Lance McCullers. Zach Eflin was brought in, in the third and cruised for five straight scoreless innings.

Down 2-1 with two outs and two strikes, Bryce Harper sent one "to the moon" to tie it up in the 8th. But the Brewers added the go ahead run off Jojo Romero with a 2 out single.

In the offseason the Phils reached a deal with Luis Severino for 7 years at max money. The contract has a player option and is front loaded. As for the bullpen, Hector Neris and Archie Bradley both sign elsewhere while the Phillies answered with inking John Curtiss.

Andrew McCutchen was let to sign elsewhere as the Phillies decided it was better to keep Corey Dickerson and Kyle Seager while adding Chris Taylor to the bench as a utility guy. They will have one from the right and another utility from the left in Adam Frazier as he will battle hot shot prospect Bryson Stott for the everyday second base position. Stott came up late August and proceeded to hit .380 with two homers leaving a mark on the organization.

We took the World Series in six games, probably could have don’t it in five but I’m a bull in a China shop on the bases and ran myself out of a few innings. Game 6 I scratched across one run in the first and that was all I’d need as deGrom through a complete game shutout for a 1-0 win. They need to work on the WS MVP logic IMO, they gave it to Alonso who hit .400 with one HR and six RBIs. He did have the deciding RBI in the game that clinched it but deGrom threw 16 shutout innings, I think he was more deserving

I had a fun off season. I was able to trade for Lindor and Carassco, I offered a qualifying offer to Strowman who I really didn’t want and surprisingly the Blue Jays signed him so now I get an extra draft pick. I sent that sack of **** Edwin Diaz to the Phillies and got Zack Wheeler back. Basically my off season plan was to get Lindor and try to undo everything Brodie Van Wagenon did, now I just need to find a way to get Kelenic back, although I drafted a CF who looks to be every bit as good. I have four prospects in the top fifty so we’re in good shape for the future. My only real area of concern is my bullpen

That takes some serious willpower to not reboot, no idea what I would have done if I couldn’t make the Lindor trade happen
