Cardinals head to Spring Training looking to return to the playoffs
The Cardinals will head to Florida to begin Spring Training as they look to return to the postseason after missing out last season. After winning it all in 2026, the Cardinals had a setback last year as they missed the playoffs entirely.
The Cardinals made additions to the 2028 roster, but nothing too extraordinary. The everyday lineup is expected to the same as last year with the exception of catcher, where we could see Andrew Knizner return as the every day backstop after being re-acquired via trade with the Reds. The Cardinals surprisingly did not deal Devon Snow, so it appears the two will share the duties in 2028 like they did in 2026 when the Cardinals won the World Series.
The biggest question the Cardinals will have with the lineup is who are the backups? Tommy Edman and Eddie Ortiz, who surprisingly is still on the roster, expect to take up two spots, with the third being occupied by Snow/Knizner whomever isn't catching.
One spot is expected to be reserved for Malcolm Nunez. The 24 year old signed a 3 year deal worth $2MM per year to cover his arbitration years, which could be a steal for the Cardinals. Nunez can hit for average and for power and is a good defender at 3rd base. He can also play first. After that, the Cardinals have 3 options to choose from in Paul DeJong, Trejan Fletcher, Jhon Torres to fulfill the final bench spot. Paul DeJong would be the betting favorite going into Spring since Tommy Edman can play all over the diamond. The Cardinals like Fletcher, but he only appeared as high as AA Springfield last year and its expected they would prefer he play a full season in Memphis before making the leap. Speed and defensively he's ready, but his bat needs to catch up. Jhon Torres could get a shot as he was an All-Star at Memphis last year and finished the year hitting .287 with 17 homeruns, so he's another contact/power hitter and has an extremely strong arm in right field. His lack of speed and average defense make up his only negative attributes.
The pitching staff got the most shakeup, but the starting rotation will look much of the same as will the bullpen. The Cardinals will look to Kyle Funkhouser as its ace again this year. Jack Flaherty, Junior Fernandez and Dakota Hudson, figure to be locked into starting roles. Austin Gomber, Matthew Liberatore, and youngster Paul Yastremski expect to compete for the 5th spot as they all are left handed.
The bullpen is essentially the same with Michael Wacha expected to move into a bullpen role. Zack Burdi, Jordan Hicks, Roberto Osuna, Raisel Iglesias, and Corey Littrell will all return. Jose Quijada and Jose Alvarado will compete for the other left handed role. Ryan Helsley, Alvaro Seijas and Trevor Rosenthal, who was brought back after a solid season with the Angels last year, will compete for the final spot. Carlos Martinez was brought back as well on a one year deal and could compete for a spot on the major league staff, but he's currently not on the 40 man roster.
All in all, there isn't too much to figure out this spring, aside from who will fulfill a few spots here and there. The Cardinals are eager to return to the diamond and make a run at the 2028 World Series title.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread
When building your franchise team, what are some things you do to keep it realistic?
A few things I do:
Sponsorships- Size of market determines if I use a diamond, gold, or silver sponsorship. For example, the Yankees get 3 diamonds, and the Pirates would get 3 silvers if I chose that team.
Trade frequency- I turn trade frequency sliders down early in the year and continue to increase the slider each month as I get closer to the deadline.
Trading- I sim a lot of my franchise season to keep the stats more realistic. If I'm rebuilding the Pirates, I can only trade veterans who are playing well, and in the final year or two of their contract, and they must go to a playoff hopeful team. A good example: When I was rebuilding the Pirates, I wasn't able to trade Keone Kela because he had a high ERA. No playoff hopeful team would trade for a struggling reliever going down the stretch. If I'm rebuilding a playoff hopeful team, I can only trade prospects when adding players. Non playoff teams don't trade for aging veterans.Comment

Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024-25 OffSeason
Baseball Enters Free Agency
The most notable news of the day was out of San Diego, as the Friars were not able to come to an agreement to keep Fernando Tatis Jr. the shortstop will move to the top of the free agent rankings has had a up and down career, in 2020 the Padres were able to make the World Series by beating the Cubs in the NLDS but fell to the Twins. Tatis Jr has been a .280-.300 hitter in his time out west but had fallen a bit after an injury plagued 2023 season saw him only play in 90 games and in ‘24 his offense production dipped in every category. At only 26 years old the infielder will likely have many suitors. The free agency class is very top heavy with Buehler, Pete Alonso and Willy Adames also on the market. The Cubs still have most of their core in their post-prime so it remains to be seen if they will be players in the market.
Top Talent Change Teams in a Flurry of Deals
The top heavy class of free agents wastes no time in signing deals this year as many top names were signed in the first 10 days of free agency. The exodus from the Mets continued as they have seen the faces of the franchise leave in consecutive years; a year ago it was Jacob DeGrom and this year it Pete Alonso inked a deal to be a Giant. The Giants have struggled even with their signing of Francisco Lindor a few years ago. But San Fran looks to challenge the West. A day later the Giants added Willy Adames as they looked to build up a solid line up. With the signing the Giants will likely move Lindor to 3rd to accommodate the 29 year Adames. The Giants will have to rely heavily on a young pitching staff but their time may be now as the other news of the day was Walter Buehler signing with the White Sox.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread
So what are you guys thinking about your franchises now that we know carryover saves are gone for The Show 21? Planning to stick with MLB 20 for at least 1 more year? Or are you likely to move on from your current franchise? Just curious what others are thinking about this.
As for me.....obviously this was just confirmed so I’m not sure of anything yet, but my thinking right now is that in most cases investing any more time into franchise on MLB 20 is a waste now that all of our franchises have no future.
Even for those who are very invested in their current franchises, how long will you really be happy staying behind on MLB 20 for before you will want to move on and have to drop the franchise anyway?
Personally it’s hard for me to want to play a franchise when the next games release is getting close knowing that if I want to move to the next version I’ll have to start over soon anyway.
Would like to hear from others who feel differently though. Feel bad for guys like cb who have put so time much into their carryovers, this is rough news.Comment

All that the issues will be is player age can’t edit and the 2020 scheduled that never happened !
I’m not waiting till July for rosters to start a franchise I always like to n late March, no export player trick to import players over every player will have to be made from scratch. I’m all ready with mlb 20 rostersComment

The only thing this news has confirmed for me is that I will not be buying the PS4 version of MLB '21, so if I find a PS5 by April 20th, then I'll see what's new in franchise before committing.
I'm still rolling along with my franchise in '20 (currently playing a ST game now), and will continue to do so until I know for sure that I'm going to make the jump to '21.
The mention of franchise changes has me intrigued and I know what I've been wanting for years and hopefully this year will offer a few of those things. If so, I'll likely switch. If not, I'll sit out this year like I did '17 and continue my franchise.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

With that said, I really hope they do indeed revamp franchise and make me want to buy 21. If they hit on all my personal wishlist items I'll consider upgrading but I'm not buying a PS5 either way.

Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024-25 OffSeason
Cubs Win Tatis Jr Sweepstakes
The Cubs are still awaiting word from Bryant on whether he will resign but in the meantime they have arguably won the off season for the second year in a row. Last season it was the signing of DeGrom and they have now made a big splash with the signing of Tatis Jr. on a 9 year deal with over 31 million a year. The deal will include a player option that will allow the infielder to enter the market again when he is 34. The Mets were the odds on favorite to sign the slugger but it is believed a big pitch from Javy Baez steered the right hander to Waveland Ave. Tatis will likely move to 2nd or 3rd based on how things shake out with Bryant.
Bryant commits to the Cubs Long Term
A day after the Tatis signing the Cubs got another bit of news as Kris Bryant announced he would be returning to the Cubs on a 5 year deal. Bryant made it known that last season had been a struggle for him still felt at home in Chicago. The Cubs reportedly had rebuked a deal of that length during the in season talks but relented and signed the 3rd basemen on a deal that could likely see him retire as a Cub. The Cubs will not have to contend with a payroll that will be the highest in baseball; While the Cubs will remain the favorite to repeat as champions the signing of Tatis and Bryant will have ramifications down the road when it comes to adding in the future.
The other news of the day was not all good for the Cubs, Carl Edwards Jr will not rejoin the Cubs as he inked a 3 year deal and will be the favorite to be the closer for San Diego.Comment

Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024-25 OffSeason
Free Agency Wrap Up
The Cubs sat quiet the rest of the off season and did not add any additional players via free agency. They did make moves on the trade front. The Cubs were shopping several players during the winter meetings as rumors emerged that they club was looking to trim salary. A trade was announced a few days into the winter meetings as Chicago would send Kyle Schwarber and Nico Hoerner to the Tigers for 3 prospects. Schwarber has been a fan favorite but locked up for another 2 years but he was bothered by injuries and will be more suited to play DH at this point in his career. Nico Hoerner took the Tatis signing the hardest as he would be the odd man out, and made it known he would not want to take a reserve role. The move for Detroit adds to a lineup already featuring Mookie Betts. Betts has not had a winning season since signing with the Tigers after the 2020 season and the organization needed to make a splash to keep their super star happy. The Tigers have a bright young pitching staff and now may have the lineup to compete in a crowded AL Central.
Notable Additions
K. Bryant (resigned 5 year)
K. Hendricks (opted into final year)
J. DeGrom (opted into final year)
Inf Tatis Jr (signed 9 years 271 million)
Notable Departures
JD Martinez (retired)
Jose Abreu (free agent, did not sign)
Carl Edwards Jr (signed with S.D)
Victor Reyes (signed 2 year deal with S.D.)
Notable Signings around the League
White Sox - Buehler, Victory Robles
Giants - Pete Alonso, Willy Adames
Cleveland - Mike Sorka
Twins - Chris Paddock
Braves - Alex BergmanComment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread
I'm going to keep playing MLB 20 - in Year 4 of my Mets franchise, and in some ways this news gives me more incentive to keep playing the game and to see how far along I can get in franchise. I do not plan on getting a PS5 this year and with no carryover save, I'm not interested in starting a new franchise in 21.
I am likely going to pick up MLB 21 on Xbox, just to have the option of playing The Show on an Xbox console.Comment

All that the issues will be is player age can’t edit and the 2020 scheduled that never happened !

But if we knew Y2Y saves will be back for MLB 22 I would probably rather just deal with the extra wait this year and get started fresh with a franchise that could be carried over to the next game.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread
I'm still rolling along with my restarted franchise on 20, using the final roster update. I'm about 50 games in.
I'm a bit undecided on 21. I'm not sure when I'll jump to the PS5, so that adds to my indecision. At the moment, I'm leaning toward getting 21 on the PS4, but waiting for a sale. In the meantime, I'm just going to keep playing 20.
I always like to start fresh with each new game, so the Y2Y save thing doesn't bother me. But I feel for you guys who were invested in it. I'm still pissed they took season mode out.Comment
