Juan Fabregas named starting left fielder for All-Star Game

The Cardinals will have a lone representative in the 2027 All-Star Game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, and it will be Juan Fabregas.

Fabregas was named the starting left fielder for the National League and was also invited to participate in the Homerun Derby on Monday night.

Fabregas is hitting .329 with 26 homeruns and 64 RBI's at the break, leading the National League in 2 of the 3 triple crown categories. He trails Corey Seager (.344) of the Reds in batting average.

Mid-June 2021 and the Mets have finally overtaken the Phillies for first place in the NL East.

Pete Alonso leads the MLB in HRs and RBIs. This is his full rookie year after being called up last Sept. Jeff McNeil is also in his full rookie year and is hitting .315 with 10 HRs.

        Juan Fabregas wins homerun derby

Not much has gone right the Cardinals this 2027 season, but one thing that has is that Juan Fabregas is this year's Homerun Derby champion.

Fabregas defeated Austin Hays in the first round, Corey Seager in the semifinals, and then Rowdy Tellez in the championship.

American League defeats National League 4-2 in All-Star Game

The American League has won the 2027 All-Star game in Chicago's Wrigley Field, beating the National League 4-2.

The National League got the first run on the board in the 4th when Juan Fabregas doubled home Freddy Zamora to take an early 1-0 lead. The AL would strike back for 3 in the 6th when Gavin Sheets blasted a 3 run double with 2 outs to put the AL up 3-1. In the bottom of the 7th, the NL would get a solo blast from Corey Seager to make it 3-2, but in the top of the 9th, the AL would add a run when Delvin Perez hit a sac fly to make it 4-2, the game's final score.

          Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Cubs Head into final Series Against Reeling Brewers
The Brewers had been matching the Cubs step for step for most of the year and had the second best record in baseball at the All Star break. Much has changed since then as they are at risk of missing the playoffs. The Brewers did not make any moves at the deadline & have struggled to overcome injuries to Yelich and Huira. While the Brewers were able to get Huira back in Late August they will be without Yelich for the rest of the year due to a broken hand; they will be also without Tim Anderson until at least the NLDS if they make it that far. The Brewers sit at 81-70 but since August they have posted a 15-28 record. Milwaukee sits in the 2nd Wildcard spot & have a 2.5 game lead over the Marlins with 11 games left to play.

In the first of 4 Kyle Hendricks faced Freddy Peralta. Both starters kept the came scoreless but the Cubs were able to take advantage of miscues in the 6th. Weston Wilson made his major league debut for Milkwaukee but struggled in his first time at the show as he went 0-4 and a fielding error that would prove costly. With 1 out in the 6, Kris Bryant would ground to 3rd; the play should have been a routine out but Wilson’s throw pulled Ryon Healy off 1st to allow Bryant to reach. The error allowed Willson Contreras to come to the plate and he proceeded to break the tie with a 2 run home run. Schwarber would add insult to injury as he would go back to back with a solo homerun to right. The Brewers were able to get on the board with a RBI groundout by Navarro but they could not contend with Hendricks as he went 7 innings as he gave up 3 hits and a walk. Clase struck out 2 in the 9th while allowing 1 hit and no runs to get his 52nd save on the year; this also marks the 100th save in his young career in the 3-1 win. It also was Hendricks 19th win of the year. Dellin Betance had to be removed from the game on the 8th. He was able to get 1 out but had allowed 2 runners on base. Betance got hit by a comebacker but was able to make the play to get the 2nd out. Betance was diagnosed with a groin sprain but should be able to avoid the IL.

In the 2nd game the Cubs had Micheal Kopech on the mound. He was rocky early as he gave up 2 on 2 hits and a walk but was able to settle in after the rough first inning. Kris Bryant was able to get the cubs on the scoreboard in the 3rd on a solo home run and tied a inning later as Oscar Colas also went yard. With the tied up 2-2 in the 6th Mariano Velaquez came in to pinch run for Kyle Scwarber; the speedster was able to score the go ahead run on a single from Colas. In the last game of the season series the Brewers would have to go against Jacob Degrom but couldn’t muster enough Degrom had another solid outing as he went 7 innings and gave up 2 run while striking out 7. The game was tied in the 3rd but Brennan Davis hit his 11th home run on the year; this one a 3 run shot. The offenses were quiet from that point on but it was enough for Degrom to pick up his 18th win on the year. After losing the first 3 games of the final 4 against the Cubs, the Brewers find themselves in a tie with the Marlins for the last wildcard spot. With a week left in the season the divisional races look to be squared away but the wildcard spots are still up for grabs.

          NL
          East
          Braves 88-66
          Marlings 7 games back

          Wilcard
          Rangers
          White Sox
          Oakland 4 GB

The Cubs were not able to complete the 4 game sweep as Adonis Medina struggled giving up 3 home runs and 7 runs in a 8-5 loss. The Cubs will will finish the final week of the regular season with their last homestand of the year against the Pirates and then be on the road at Cincinnati

MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Started a mew franchise with my Padres...for obvious reasons. Started slow at 1-4 dropping 3/4 to the Rockies due to the bullpen blowing leads. I was up in 3 out of the 4 games going into the 8th. I Have since responded with 9 in a row to sit at 10-3 right now. Snell just got injured and is out 1-2 weeks. Tatis has been unstoppable and after a slow start, Ha-Seong Kim is now at .313 with 2 HRS.

My biggest peeve is all my starters (Snell, Darvish, Lamet, Clevinger, Paddack) all have “ACE” expectations and everyone but Snell has low morale and lower ratings. I hate this feature and wish it could go away.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

I had been trying to go back and update from days past where I've been playing and not updating my franchise, but honestly, I just don't want to try anymore. Between life happenings, holidays and preparation, I wanted to play as much as possible, and not focus on updating/sharing.

Over the long stretch of holidays I completed the 2027 season, so here's the wrap-up to the 2027 season and I've recommitted to updating my franchise going forward.

Cardinals finish season 86-76..miss the playoffs

The Cardinals have completed the 2027 campaign and will not be defending their World Series Championship as they missed the playoffs by one game behind the Mets for the 2nd wildcard spot. The Cardinals were eliminated from the division early in September as the Reds (100-62) ran away with the division this year.

The Cardinals will now turn their focus to the offseason as they try to address issues that prevented this team from earning a chance to defend their crown, although injuries were a major factor as they played most of the season without Kyle Funkhouser, Devon Snow, Brendan McKay, and Jordan Hicks. The primary area of attention will be the bullpen along with the starting pitching. Injuries plagued the pitching staff and the Cardinals were humbled by the fact that their depth on paper didn't translate onto the diamond. They will need to address this going forward and likely look to add more veteran arms as backup, in case of injuries or poor performance.

The Cardinals will need to focus on 2nd base as Kolten Wong is a free agent, if he doesn't retire. Wong had an outstanding year, hitting .260 and once again leading all of baseball in walks drawn with 115. He also had a career best OBP of .430. But Wong will be 37 when the 2028 campaign takes place, so it will be interesting to see if he wants to play, if the Cardinals bring him back on another one year deal while they determine just who in the pipeline is ready to take his place.

Outside of that, unless a roster shakeup happens, the other 7 starting positions should be filled:

              C - Devon Snow
              1B - Brendan McKay
              SS- Samuel Franco
              3B - Nolan Gorman
              LF - Juan Fabregas
              CF - Harrison Bader
              RF - J.J Bleday

Don't be surprised to the see the Cardinals also look to address their bench, especially finding a bat with pop. The Cardinals bench was good (Paul DeJong, Tommy Edman, C.J. McElroy, and Eddie Ortiz), but they lacked pop and at times consistency. Both McElroy and DeJong are free agents and with McElroy wanting a chance to start, I would be suprised if the Cardinals didn't let his $4M contract walk and turn to the depth they have in the pipeline at the centerfield position.

Eddie Ortiz could be on the move as the Cardinals don't want to move the 26 year old, but with Fabregas playing all season, Ortiz isn't going to want to accept a bench role for another season. The Cardinals could get a decent return for Ortiz and use that to improve their pitching staff.

I really don't expect much shakeup in the Cardinals roster this year, especially the big league roster. They have a great core that won a World Series a year ago, and while missed the playoffs this year, when healthy played good enough baseball to be in the hunt for the postseason until the final day.

Still there are pieces that need to be added and areas to improve. And while teams always have a plan in place going into the offseason, that plan is typically altered due to a roster move by another team forcing you to re-think your strategy.

              Here's to a successful offseason!

                    Thanks!

I actually have pitch speed at default this year. I played around with it during my first Spring Training and decided that I'm going to leave it on default pitch speed this year.

Everything else is correct that you stated.

Yeah it was a trying season to play through as I thought I'd at least get back to the playoffs, but really key injuries, and significant injuries, really hampered our team. My depth isn't as good as I thought, so need to focus on that in the offseason.

Yes, I plan on playing another 162 prior to MLB 21 releases. Starting the offseason now after doing some overall roster maintenance, so I should be starting in the next day or two.

Cardinals re-sign Jordan Hicks to 4 year deal

The Cardinals wasted no time in re-signing their top target this offseason by agreeing to a 4 year $40MM deal with RHP Jordan Hicks.

Hicks was the team's closer last year when Roberto Osuna was injured. Hicks saved 33 of 36 games and recorded 75 strikeouts in 55 innings of work.

Roberto Osuna and Jordan Hicks are likely to compete for the closer role in Spring Training, but Matheny stated there is no reason they cannot share the role in the 2028 season.

Cardinals re-sign Zack Burdi to 4 year deal

The Cardinals are ensuring that they retain the top arms of their bullpen, this time re-signing RHP Zack Burdi to a 4 year $20MM deal.

33 year old Burdi was a significant piece to the team's bullpen arsenal last year pitching to a 2.86 ERA in 85 innings of work. He also was responsible for 14 holds as well as 2 saves. It's the most innings that Burdi has worked in his career as well as a career high in strikeouts at 77 on the year. The best news for the Cardinals is that he only allowed 6 homeruns in 85 innings after allowing 9 homeruns in 53 1/3 innings last year.

Burdi will once again be the 7th/8th inning guy to get the ball to Hicks or Osuna to close it out. The Cardinals still have work to do to ensure the bullpen is a significant strength, but they are well on their way with re-signing Hicks and Burdi.

With those two secured, the Cardinals will now turn their attention to Kolten Wong, Michael Wacha, Paul DeJong, and Jose Quijada who are exclusive free agents they are contemplating re-signing this offseason. I would suspect that DeJong and his $3M per year asking price will allow him to hit free agency. Wong and Wacha are fan favorites who the club would love to have back on one year deals as both are offering discounts to re-sign (Wong $5M and Wacha $1M) Quijada is a lefty who spent time in both St.Louis and Memphis and while left handed pitching is a desire in the bullpen, the Cardinals may wait to see what the free agent landscape looks like before committing.

Yoan Aybar signs with Rays, turns down Cardinals offer

The Cardinals missed on their first big free agent target as they pursued left handed relief pitcher, Yoan Aybar. The 28 year old came thru the Red Sox organization and has been a dominant left handed pitcher the past 4 years, helping lead the BoSox to the World Series last year. With his first taste of free agency, the young lefty decided to see what the open market would bring and he wasn't short of potential suitors.

The Cardinals, Rays, Red Sox, Nationals, and White Sox all made runs at the 28 year old, but in the end the Rays signed him to a 4 year deal. The Cardinals offered a 3 year deal worth more money, but didn't offer him the role of closer which was something Aybar was seaking.

For now, the Cardinals will turn their attention to other aspects, including 2nd base as Kolten Wong still has not agreed to the Cards one year offer, choosing instead to test the free agent market.

This free agent class isn't short of superstars as Yoan Moncada, Fernando Tatis Jr, Michael Kopech, Keibert Ruiz, A.J. Puk, and a host of others are up for grabs on the market.

Red Sox hit a triple with free agent signings

The defending American League champions just had the biggest impact on the free agent market by signing 3 of the top free agents on the market. The Red Sox landed:

                                SP - A.J. Puk (4 year $121.60MM deal)
                                C - Keibert Ruiz (9 year $279MM deal)
                                2B - Yoan Moncada (7 year $217MM deal)

While this is a major splash in the market, the Red Sox did lose, or potentially will lose, Andrew Benintendi, Mookie Betts, and Fernando Tatis Jr to free agency.

Yankees, Blue Jays, Rays and Orioles may want to take note and look to make counter moves, especially the Yankees whom Moncada played for last year.
