Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

I have about a month left in the season but I’m starting ng to think ahead to how I’m going to handle the off season. Any thoughts on decent young center fielders I could get in return for a 90 rated Syndergaard? I’m trying to stick to trading him to a contender looking to win now

      Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Cubs Keep Cruising in Mid August.
The Cubs were able to keep the train going as they took 2 of 3 against the Cardinals and Pirates to end their home stand. The Cubs would end up losing the first game of each series but came back to win close games in the final 2 against their NL Central foes. The Cubs would lose the first game of the Cardinal’s series 3 to 5 but then were able to win game 2 and 3 by identical scores of 4-3.

Against the Pirates the Cubs again would lose the first game 2-3 as the bullpen struggled to keep the game tied in the 8th. The Cubs would win the middle game 4-3 but will be without Oscar Colas for several days as he had a mild ankle sprain. The cubs and Pirates put on an offensive show in the final game but the Cubs were able to squeak by 7 to 6.

The Cubs were able to win a quick mini series against the hapless Orioles 6 to 3 and 8 to 2 and then would have a day off before continuing the road trip with 3 in Cincinnati anti and 3 in Milwaukee.

Against the Reds the Cubs would get dominated as Adonis Medina struggled giving up 6 runs in the 1-9 loss. The Cubs would respond in game 2 winning 10-3 and then winning a close one 2-1.

The Brewers were up next for the Cubs and they have been in freefall as the lead in the Central has grown to 14 games back of the Cubs. The Brewers also looked like a lock for the wildcard but that may come into question as they now sport a 3 game lead over the Dodgers and the Marlins have cut the distance to 5 games. Smelling blood in the water the Cubs continued their dominance over the Brewers as they swept them again. In game 1 Brailyn Marquez was able to pick up his 10th win of the year as he went 6 innings and struck out 6 in the 5-3 win. Javy Baez was halfway to the cycle as he got a home run and a triple while driving in 3 runs on the day. Emmanuel Clase was able to pick up his 44th save of the year. In the middle game Degrom against only allowed 1 run in the game as he struck out 10 in 7 innings in the 6-1 victory; Kris Bryant belted 2 home runs and Miguel Amaya hit his 10th of the year playing for a resting Contreras. In the final game of the series Kyle Hendricks flirted with perfection as he took a perfect game into the 7th inning, his bid would fall short after giving up a hit and then a home run to Rhys Hoskins. Hendricks would finish the 7th inning and the Cubs would pick up the victory 6 to 2.

I’ve purchased some extra budget so that I’ll have plenty of Cohen dollars to spend. Ideally I’ll be able to mimic the off season moves the Mets make in real life. If not I’m looking to move Syndergaard, I’m absolutely horrible pitching with him

Are there pre determined bullpen games? In 3 of my last 4 series my opponent has had a regular starter show up on the pre game match up, but then the game starts and a reliever is the starter

              No

              This usually happens because either

              A) that particular pitcher is struggling

              Or

              B) that pitcher suffers pregame injury

Cardinals sweep Yankees..win streak at 4

The Cardinals swept the Yankees over the weekend in St.Louis as they have now won 4 straight games, but still remain 7 games behind the Reds who are just as hot.

The Cardinals did it with both pitching and hitting as they try to find their groove as the season approaches the mid-way point.

The Cardinals are off on Monday as they travel to Minnesota for a quick 2 game series with the Twins and then off on Thursday as they travel to Philly for a 3 game weekend series with the Phillies to conclude the first half of the season.

                  Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

MLB in Final Push to Playoffs.
As the Cubs and the rest of baseball head to the final weeks of the regular season the wildcard and divisional races are in full swing. In the NL the Cubs are all but assured their 5th division crown as the Brewers August swoon prevented the race from being close. Out west the Diamondbacks hold a slim lead of 3 games over the Dodgers while the Padres are 7 games back. In the NL East the Brave have a 9 game lead over the Marlins. The Brewers currently have a hold the stop wildcard spot by 2 games over the Dodgers and the Marlins are 4 games behind. In the AL the Rays hold a 4.5 game lead over the Yankees in the east; the White Sox trail the Twins by 6.5 games and the Angels have a 3 game lead over the Rangers. If the playoffs were to start today the Rangers and and White Soxs would hold down the wildcard spots as the A’s are 4.5 games out of the playoff picture.

The Cubs will finish out August/start September with a series against the Cardinals. The Cubs are the Central well in hand and will again have to weigh out how much to play/rest their starting core down the stretch. In the first game Oscar Colas returned from his ankle injury to start in the first game of the 3 game series. Colas gave up a 3 run home run with 2 outs in the 6th that would give St. Louis the lead that they would never relinquish. The Cubs would draw closer when Kyle Schwarber homered in the bottom of the 9th but they could not tie the game as they fell 3 to 4. On the last day of August, Jack Flathery faced AJ Puk in a pitcher's duel. Both starting pitchers gave up 1 run in 6 and 7 innings respectively and the score would remain until the 10th inning as Anthony Rizzo would hit a walk off home run with 1 out in the 10th to give the Cubs the win.

With the calendar moving to Sept. The Cubs made roster moves as the roster expanded to 28; while several players made sense to call up Chicago elected to call Michael Kopech and Richard Kell. Kopech was picked up late in spring training off the waiver wire and the Cubs were able to stash him in Triple A Iowa to get consistent playing time. Kopech has been with the cross town rivals but never was able to find his footing on the major league level. Kopech struggled early in the minor league season with giving up the long ball but settled into being the top strikeout man for the Iowa Cubs. Kopech may have a chance to make the playoff roster depending on how he performs and how many pitchers the Cubs decide to carry in the postseason as Adonis Medina has been wildly inconsistent. The other call up was given to infielder Richard Kell. Kell made the show out of spring training but was demoted early in the year as he could not find his footing with adjusting to sporadic playing time. Kell responded as he hit .342 in 250+ at bats at Iowa in the lead off role.

In the final game of the Cardinal series, Tyler Glasnow and Braylin Marquez took the mound. Glasnow ended up walking 6 batters but did not allow a run in his 6 innings of work. Marquez was able to keep pace until the 5th inning when he left a changeup in the zone that Brian O Keefe was able to sneak past the wall in right. The Cubs could not do much better against the Cardinals bullpen as they would be shutout by the slimmest of margins, 1-0. The Cubs welcome the NL East leading braves to town for a 4 game slate to finish the current homestand.

Rangers Sit At 13-12 As End Of April 2021 Nears

The latest stretch of games have seen us take 2 of 3 from the Yankees in NY, 2 out of 3 from the Astros back in Arlington, and most recently the Yankees would get some revenge with a 3 out of 4 game series win.

Over the last few games both 3B Justin Turner and 1B Carlos Santana have become a bit banged up, with Turner hitting the IL with an Inflammed Hip, and Santana joining him with a Pulled Calf. Both players will remain out for the next 1-2 weeks. Utility man Brock Holt and IF Ryan Goins have been recalled.

The surprise breakout of Greg Bird makes the short loss of Santana a lot less painful, but losing Turner as well leaves this Ranger lineup in a bit of a tough spot for the next week or two.

Next: The 15-11 LA Angels come to Texas for a 3 game set. After that it’s off to San Francisco for 2 games, and then 3 games in Oakland to the first month of the season.

Cardinals take both games in mini-sweep of Twins

The Cardinals and Twins played a 2 game mini-series at Target Field on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the Cardinals winning both games.

The Cardinals have now won 6 straight but still trail the Reds by 7 games in the Central, but are just 2 games out of the wildcard.

Nolan Gorman had an outstanding series recording 7 hits in the two games as well as 5 RBI's. Zach Jackson continues to impress behind the dish throwing out all 4 base stealers and going 4 for 6 in the series with 3 RBI's.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday as they travel to Philadelphia for a 3 game weekend series with the Phillies. This will be the final series before the All-Star Break.

So I hadn’t played the game since around the first of August. Took a little break to play some other games. When I started my franchise back up, I came in and scored 38 runs in 4 games. Have they tweaked the offense since I last played, or did I just hit a hot streak? I will add that 3 of those 4 games were against the Orioles.

Can’t say for 100% sure, but I’m pretty sure they stopped tweaking gameplay for a long while now. Every patch they’ve released in the past while of time seems to be just little things, mostly stuff online/DD related unless I’m forgetting something. SDS isn’t EA, they don’t constantly mess with the gameplay the entire cycle of the game

It’s probably a combination of a hot streak, the Orioles beyond terrible pitching, and the Yankees stacked lineup.

                            Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Cubs Face off Against the Top Teams in NL
The Braves were in town for a 4 game series in what could be a preview of the playoffs. The Braves have been surging and recently overtook the Brewers for the 2nd best record in the NL. The Braves have been led by their offense as Darby Swanon is currently in 2nd for the batting title with a line of .312; the Braves also have been knocking the cover off the ball as they have led the league in home runs as Swanson, Gallo and Freeman are all in the top 10 of home runs. They have done all this in the 2nd half of the season without Ronald Acuna Jr. who has been on the IL for over a month with a knee injury; Acuna will likely miss the regular season but should be back for the NLDS.

In the first game Max Fried went against Jacob Degrom. The Braves were able to jump out to the early lead when Joey Gallo scored 2 in the 3rd innings on a double to center field. To make it 3-1. The Cubs were able to tie the game in the 6th on a hit by Jose Abreu scored Brennan Davis and Richard Kell. With the game tied the Cubs went to the bullpen but Kyle Ryan had a rare rough outing as he gave up 2 solo home runs in the 7th. Kyle Schwarber was able to get the Cubs within 1 on a solo homerun in the bottom of the 9th but the Cubs would fail to produce any more as they fell 4-5.

In the 2nd game Kyle Hendricks was rolling in the 4th and had the early 1-0 lead but had to be removed from the game with 2 outs with an undisclosed injury. Recent call up Kopech came in but gave up a 3 run bomb to Freddy Freeman in the 6th. The score would remain 3-1 heading into the 9th where the Cubs got 2 on with 1 out but Chad Green was able to get two consecutive fly outs to end the game and notch his 46th save of the year, pulling past Clase for the MLB lead in that area.

The Cubs were able to get back on track in the 3rd game as Adonis Medina held the Braves scoreless until the 6th inning when he gave up 2 and left the game with no decision. Chicago broke the tie in the 8th with a solo home run as the Cubs won 3 to 2.
In the final game, AJ Puk was able to salvage the split in the series in a 2-1 win. Puk went 7 innings and gave up 1 run while striking out 2. The Cubs were able to take the lead in the 2nd and never looked back as Nico Hoerner drove in a run on a triple.

The Cubs boarded a plane after Sunday night’s game and headed out for a west coast road trip where they would play 3 in Denver before heading out to the desert to face the division leading D-Backs. The Rockies have wasted Nolan Arenando’s best years and currently have the worst record in baseball as they sit at 96 losses with 3 weeks left to play. The Cubs were able to win the series 2-1. The Cubs used a big 4th inning as they drove in all 5 of their runs with Brennan Davis and Kyle Schwarber homering in the 5-1 victory. Brailyn Marquez got the win as he put in 6 innings of work and struck out 7. The Cubs were able to take the second game 3-1. Kyle Hendricks was able to return from his blister; the Rockies got the early 1-0 lead but the Cubs tied it in the 3rd and went ahead in the 5th on a 2 run home run by Wilson Contreras. The Rockies avoided the sweep as they used a late inning rally to prevail. Micheal Kopech was able to get his first start with the Cubs and took a 1-0 lead into the 7th before he gave up 1 before he was pulled with 2 men on. The Bullpen would allow them to score as the Cubs fell 3-1.

The Diamondbacks currently sit atop the west at 76-65 but have the Dodgers breathing down their neck at only 1 game back at the start of play Monday. Degrom was back in action but found himself in trouble early as he gave up a double and a walk with 2 outs before giving up the long ball to make it 3-0 in the 1st. The Cubs would counter as they scored 2 in the 4th and then a 2 run homerun by Scwarber in the 6th gave them the lead. Emmanuel Clase was able to get his 48th save to push him into a tie with Atlanta’s Chad Green. In the 2nd game, the score was tied at 1-1 but the Cubs suffered the loss after Andre Chacin gave up 2 home runs in the 8th and fell 1-3. In the final game of the series Chicago was able to run Steve Matz from the game after 3.1 innings. In the 4th Javy Baez hit his 24 home run. The next batter up, Jose Abreu was able to get on with a screamer to left field and JD Martinez was able to capitalize on a rare start in left field as he hit a 2 run home run his 9th of the year. Brailyn Marquez went 6 innings and struck out half a dozen in the 3-1 win. The Cubs will travel back home as they will play a 4 game series against the Reds who are peaking at the right time.

                              Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

The Reds and Cubs Square off for a 4 Game Series

Cincinnati comes to Wrigley peaking at the right time. The club was able to make a move at the deadline to send struggling pieces to the Red Soxs for Michael Conforto. The move freed up space for others to get playing time and the Reds have been pushing for the playoffs ever since. The Reds come into the series above .500 for the first time since early in the year at 74-72. They currently sit outside of the wildcard spots but are in striking distance; the Brewers still hold the top spot but the Dodgers sit 1 game behind them, the Marlins sit 2 games out of the playoff spot and the Reds 4 games back. Cincy will have a tough slate as they will face the Cubs 7 times 2+ weeks of season.

The Cubs would attempt to squash any hopes of the Reds making the playoffs as they rolled out Kyle Hendricks for the first game. Hendricks was able to play with the lead as the Cubs scored 3 in the first. Hendricks would flirt with disaster as he allowed a 2 hits and season high 7 walks in 6 innings but he was able to keep the Reds scoreless. The Cubs would add 3 more in the 7th as the Cubs took game 1 6-1. Adonis Medina was able to take the second game as he gave up 2 runs in 6 innings as the cubs held the early 5-2 lead; that changed in the 5th when Nico Hoerner connected on a grand slam to put the game out of reach. The Reds would draw closer but could not overcome the lead as the Cubs won 9 to 4, Nico has had a up and down year but may be back on an upswing as he went 4 for 4 in the game. In the 3rd game the Cubs kept rolling as Micheal Kopech was able to get his first win in a Cubs uniform as he went 5 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits and getting 3 strikeouts. The Cubs would strike first in the bottom of the 1st as Kyle Schwarber connected for a 3 run home run. The Cubs offense would go quiet the rest of the game. The Reds were able to get the tying runs on the bases against Emmanuel Clase with 2 outs but Clase would get a pitch hitting Conforto to swing and miss on a cutter away for his 50th save. In the fina game of the series the Cubs went for the sweep with Jacob Degrom on the mound. Degrom would give up a home run to Cody Bellinger but was in line for the win as the game came down to the 9th inning. The Cubs were leading 2-1 as Clase went for save 51. Clase got a quick first out but then walked a man and a single lead to runners at 1st and 3rd. Clase got a ground ball but it died in infield. Nico Hoerner passed on the double play to try and get the out at the plate but his throw was just late. Clase was able to get out of the inning but the Cubs would fall in the 11th 3-4.

Cubs & Twins Square Off For Mini Series
Next up the Cubs would have its final interleague battle as the Twins came to town. The Cubs gave a warm welcome to Ian Happ but he did not see time in either game due to the Cubs having lefties on the mound. The Cubs were able to win the first game of the mini series 3-1. The Cubs got on the board in the 2nd on a solo home run by Brennan Davis for his 10th of the year. The Cubs would add more in the 6th as Baez and Jose Abreu were at 3rd and 1st. JD Martinez grounded into the double play but it allowed the Cubs to go up 2-0. Anthony Rizzo was able to take the lead as the Cubs top RBI man in the 7th with a pinch hit double that scored on. AJ Puk took the shut out into the 9th and gave up a walk and a double with 2 outs. The Cubs elected to go to the pen due to Puk being over the century mark in pitch count. Clase was able to bounce back and get the final out with a devastating slider for a swing and a miss. To end the series the Cubs would fall quietly as they got shut out by Jordan Balazovic. Brailyn Marquez was able to keep pace with him until Jose Ramirez hit a 2 hr in the 7th as the Cubs fell 3-0.

The Cubs will be back in action tomorrow as they will face a Brewers ball club that is on the brink of missing the playoffs.

Cardinals drop 2 of 3 to Phillies as they head to the break

The Cardinals dropped 2 of 3 to the Phillies over the weekend and find themselves 8 games behind the Reds in the Central division and 4 games out of the wildcard.

After coming off a World Series Championship last season, the 2027 version of the Cardinals have looked like everything except for defending champions. This team just, for whatever reason, cannot put things together to make a stretch or few of winning 7 out of 10 games, 8 out of 10 games, 20 games in a month, etc...

Instead its a team that has looked like a club that is going to hover around the .500 mark for the full 162 game slate and even if they snuck their way into the playoffs, would be seeing the exit early. Yes injuries have played a significant role in this team's struggles, but you would think the club would be deep enough to adapt, but though it certainly seemed they were on paper and in the Spring, they have been anything but.

The front office now has a decision to make as we look at the final two weeks before the trade deadline. Do you sell, buy, or stay put? And to be honest, I don't think the front office knows at this point what they want to do. On paper, and judging by last year, this team could put a magnificent 2nd half of the season together and get back into the race. Or they could do as they have for 90+ games and hover around the .500 mark, all while looking uninspired to play the game.

If they sell who do they move? Big contract like Jack Flaherty? Depth like outfielder Eddie Ortiz? Struggling players like SS Samuel Franco?

If they buy where do they turn? Bullpen? They've tried this already. Starting depth? A bat here, a glove there?

Normally you would think at this point a club would have definitive approach at the deadline, but this club seems to not have a clue as to which button to press.

I guess they have time to figure it out, but honestly, this year, I'm not sure there is a right answer.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
