Cubs take 2 of 3 against Brewers
The Cubs returned home to face off against the Brewers. They got a strong start from AJ Puk as he went 7 innings and struck out 8 as he only allowed 2 men to score on 5 hits. The Cubs lead the whole way in this one as they used a big 4th inning behind homers from Rizzo and Contreras to win 10-2. In the second game the Cubs offense kept rolling as the Cubs used a big 5th and 6th inning to score 10 runs again. Jacob Degrom was stellar as he went the distance and struck out 7. The Brewers only run came from a solo home run from Urshela. In the final game the Brewers were able to bounce back as Adrian Houser faced Adonis Medina. Medina struggled in the 4th as he gave up a big 3 run shot to get the Brewers. Chicago fought back but Medina gave up another 3 runs in the 6th and could not get out of the inning as the Brewers fought off getting swept with the 7-5 victory.
Cubs fall short against NL East favorites
Next up the Nationals came to town. Washington are without Scherzer this year as he called it a career this past off season. The Cubs still had to contend with Strasburgin the first game as Brailyn Marquez took the mound. Marquez and Strasburg pitched a doozy as they combined for 16 strike outs through 6 and a half innings. The Cubs were able to jump to the 1-0 lead but Yovanny Cruz couldn’t get an out in the 8th after facing 2 batters in the 7th inning. After letting 2 men on, Andre Chacin came in and got a quick out but gave up a hit and a walk to keep the bases loaded and tie the game. Carl Edwards Jr was able to get Miguel Sano to strike out swinging on a nasty cutter but Max Kepler got a 2 out base hit that plated 2. The Cubs couldn’t contend with Edwin Diaz and fell 3-1.
In the second AJ Puk took the mound in replace of Hendricks who was a late scratch after having some discomfort in his throwing arm. Puk was on short rest but was able to provide enough to get the Cubs the win. Puk did give up a towering 450 foot shot to Juan Soto but was able to limit the damage to 2 runs. The Cubs were held scoreless until the 7th when 2 doubles by Javy Baez and Nico Hoerner got them on the board. The Nats would pull ahead again on a Max Kepler home run but the Cubs were able to win this on in the 9th when Danny Santana hit a pinch hit home run to tie it. Nico continued his hot start as he laced a triple. Recent call up Mariano Velaquez came through with a hit just past the infield for the walk off win.
In the final game Oscar Colas took the mound for his usual sunday routine but struggled as he gave up 6 runs in 5 innings of work. The Cubs got on the board in the 6th with a Nico Hoerner home run but fell 2-6 to lose the series.
Chicago’s schedule will do them no favors after a rest day on monday; The Cubs will have to travel to San Fran to face the Dodgers then take the red eye to face off against the Pirates. Chicago will also have to contend with being short handed as Brennan Davis is set to move off the IR list but may need a few more days before he is back in the line up. The Cubs are not happy with Victor Reyes output this year but weren’t quite ready to move on from him so Velaquez will head back to the AAA club after the first game with the Giants.
