    Mets News

In their last tune up game before the start of the playoffs, the Mets were given a scare. Noah Syndergaard who started and was only going to pitch 6 innings max had to be replaced in the second inning. On a 3 and 0 count the trainer was called out to the mound. After the game it was announced as a Bruised Arm that forced Noah from the game. But going thru the footage for a second look nothing appeared to ever glance him.

The Mets will count their blessings, Syndergaard the Mets number 2 starter being hurt for any extended period of time would have seriously impacted the teams chances in the playoffs.

In other news, Jeff McNeil seems to finally found his bat. He went 9-13, 3-2B, 3-HRs, 8-R, 7-RBI, SB (5-5 in game 2 alone) seems poised to have a good postseason. Heres hoping he sparks the rest of the team along the way to a title the Mets sorely need. The Mets will take on the NL Central champs The Milwaukee Brewers.

      The Amazins

The Mets Close Out the First Half in Dramatic Fashion, Claim 2 of 3 from Braves
      July 10, 2024

The Mets are riding high heading into the All Star Break, there's no doubt about that. A Braxton Davidson double in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Mets a 9-8 victory in the finale and the series. The Mets finished the first half at 62-34 with a 10 game lead over the Marlins in the NL East.

The starting rotation has been the catalyst for success over the first 96 games of the year. Walker Buehler has been the ace of the staff thus far, sporting a 2.48 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 116 IP. Buehler continues to excel after being a Rule 5 pick before the 2022 season. He's started 78 games since joining the Mets and has a 3.33 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.

The rest of the rotation is pulling their weight as well. The entire staff has an ERA under 4.00, except for Dave Monahan, and that's because of his last start in which he gave up 6 runs in 5 innings. As a whole, the Mets pitching staff is first in the majors in ERA.

The Mets offense has been stellar as well, leading the majors in batting average, doubles, and slugging percentage. The production is coming from where you'd expect with Braxton Davidson, Michael Conforto, Eloy Jimenez, and Rafael Devers supplying most of the damage. The four of them each have an OPS of .900+ with Conforto and Devers sporting an OPS of 1.000+.

The heart of the Mets order is arguably the best in the sport and will be together for at least the next 3 years as they're all under contract. The organization is also enjoying the fact that Eloy Jimenez has yet to enter his arbitration years, although he will after this season. Look for a potential extension, although the Mets have a history of wanting to remain as flexible as possible with their money.

In terms of a deadline deal, look for the Mets to stand pat for the most part. Contending for a championship over the last 8 years has left the Mets' farm system without a lot of highly touted prospects, the brightest of which, 2B Brent Durango, is currently with the big league club. If a move is made, expect it to be for bullpen depth rather than a big splash. Of course, this all changes with a significant injury to an important player on the roster.

The Mets will kick off the second half of the year with 17 straight games, 14 of which are on the road:

      3 @ LA Dodgers
      3 @ SD Padres
      3 v SF Giants
      2 @ BAL Orioles
      4 @ ATL Braves

The Mets don't have the liberty of easing themselves into the dog days of summer. A long stretch like this could bring them crashing back to the rest of the pack if they're not careful. Walker Buehler will be handed the ball to get the team started in the second half of the year.

AL Defeats NL 3-2 in All Star Game

The Mets had four players selected to the NL All Star Team this year: RP Kelvin Herrera, 3B Rafael Devers, LF Michael Conforto, RF Braxton Davidson.

      RHP Kelvin Herrera - 1.32 ERA, 0.82 WIHP, 13 Saves, 60 K in 47.2 IP
      3B Rafael Devers - .324/.377/.625, 26 HR, 98 RBI, 35 2B
      LF Michael Conforto - .329/.412.657, 25 HR, 67 RBI, 37 2B
      RF Braxton Davidson - .318/.382/.533, 14 HR, 49 RBI, 36 2B

Milwaukee Brewers Season Ends In Dramatic Fashion (year 1)

In what appeared to be smooth sailing for Milwaukee (88-74) in the wild card game against The San Diego Padres (88-74) quickly became anything but, as they lost 5-4 in 11 innings.
It began with a Lorenzo Cain double after the first pitch of the game and Eric Sogard picking up a base hit to the gap bringing Cain in for a quick 1-0 lead. Things were relatively smooth until the 6th where starter Brandon Woodruff came out to pitch. With 85 pitches already to his name but 11 strikeouts in it looked like nothing could stop him. Eric Hosmer had other plans sending a slider to the cheap seats.. Then in a decision that can only be summed up as an example of overacting, Craig Counsell pulled the hook on Woodruff, and his day was done. Knebel came in to get the last 2 outs of the inning and did so striking out 1. The Brewers then scored an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th with Yelich doubling in Sogard after a 9 pitch at bat that turned into a walk. The Brewers will be disappointed to not have broken the game wide open as they got bases loaded with 1 out but struckout and popped out to the end the inning.
Milwaukee brought in Alex Claudio for the 7th and that's when things imploded. Lead off hitter,Cronenworth got on base and Fernando Tatis, who was 4 for 5 on the day hit a triple to score him, and Wil Myers knocked him in to make it 3-2 in favor of San Diego going to the bottom of the 8th. San Diego brought in Strahm who did his job and got two strikeouts and a grounder to short to take it to the 9th with The Padres looking to tack on more. Counsell switched pitchers again, bringing in Suter who gave up a homerun to pinch hitter Seth Mejias-Brean, but then quickly settled in and got out of the inning with 2 grounders and a pop out. Going into the bottom of the 9th it was 4-2 with The Brewers 6-7-8 batters up to bat. Ryan Braun, struckout swinging and then the magic started. Catcher Omar Narvaez hit a 2 strike, 1 out homerun making it a 1 run game. Jed Gyorko came up to bat next and immediately hit a bloop single to left. The Brewers brought on a pinch runner for Gyorko in Corey Ray to put a little speed on the base paths and a pinch hitter for their pitcher in Daniel Vogelbach who in an 11 pitch at bat, earned the walk to 1st, bringing up the top of the order and Lorenzo Cain. Cain struckout which brought up Mr. Glasses himself, Eric Sogard. With a 1-1 fastball down and away, Sogard let it rip for a base hit and scoring the tying run. The Brewers fans were on their feet as Yelich stepped up to the plate with runners on the corners. 1 ball and 2 strikes later he popped out to RF....We are going to extras. A scoreless 10th by both respective pitchers lead to a top of the 11th return to the mound by Eric Yardely for The Brewers. but it was an inning too many as Eric Hosmer blasted one to deep center for his 2nd HR of the game. The Brewers couldn't repeat the miracle of the 9th and went down swinging to end the game 5-4 in favor of the San Diego Padres who will head to Chicago to play the 108 win Cubs, while Milwaukee will stay home wondering what could have been.

I'm super excited to get to the playoffs with my Mariners, but I 100% assume that I'm going to get whooped. I'm doing extremely well, but I definitely feel a difference when I play against solid pitching. I'm around 105 games in right now and up 10 games on the Astros, so it's pretty much a given that I'm going to make it. This will be the first time I've played all 162 and then the playoffs.

Absolutely heartbroken. But at the same time it was THRILLING. Exactly what playoff baseball should feel like. I basically beat myself. I got so worried about leaving my starter in too long that when I switched him out after giving up the HR I was kicking myself for waiting 1 inning too long. Then my obsessing over that lead me to leave a breaking ball hanging for Hosmer to crush. Basically all real stuff managers and players go through in a game like the Wild Card. Couldn't have asked for more from The Show. Now to start the offseason and decide what to do with Braun and shore up my pitching staff.
A mixture of MLB The Show and FIFA 21 will probably get me through the rest of the year.

Yankees Take 3-1 ALCS Lead With G4 6-2 Win Over Indians

Another hard fought game that was closer then the score says.
Paxton would give us exactly what we needed tossing 5 shutout innings as we took a 2-0 lead. Ideally he probably should’ve been pulled after 5, but the strain on the bullpen through the first 3 games forced us to push him a bit. And we got burned, as Tyler Naquin blasted a 2 run shot to tie the game at 2-2 with 2 outs in the 6th. Plutko went 5.1 innings allowing just 2 runs for Cleveland.

We would break the tie in the 7th with a Judge RBI double with 2 men on. The bases would become loaded for Stanton who bounced into a DP, still scoring a run. 4-2 Yankees. Then in the 8th, Frazier would add on to his 3 hit night with a solo HR making it a 5-2 lead. Gardner would come up next and make it back to back HR’s, crushing out one of his own.

More sharp pitching from the own. 1.2 scoreless innings from Kahnle, who would get into a jam coming back for a 2nd inning giving up a hit and walk with 2 outs in the 8th. German would bail him out getting Deshields Jr to fly out on 1 pitch. A scoreless 9th from Chapman, and we go up 3-1.

                Yankees Adjustments Work To Perfection
With Frazier and Gardner staying hot this postseason, and Higashioka adding an early RBI single combined with solid work behind the plate, the adjustments made couldn’t have gone any better.

Sanchez Benched For Remainder Of ALCS
Higgy would get the start in G4 and gave us the best performance out of the C spot that we’ve gotten so far in these playoffs. Sanchez pinch hit for Higashioka in the 6th against lefty Oliver Perez and would ground out to 3B ending the inning, heading back to the dugout under a rain of boos.

Next: Game 5. A Gerrit Cole Vs Shane Bieber G1 Rematch.
We look to end it in the Bronx and clinch a WS appearance, as the Indians try to keep their season alive and send the series back to Cleveland for a G6.

                  NLCS Game 1

After sweeping the Brewers in the NLDS, the Mets were set to take on the Los Angels Dodgers for the National League Championship. In a bizarre move Mets Manager Estevez tabbed rookie left hander Stephen Gonsalves to pitch Game 1 (instead of ace Jacob deGrom) facing Clayton Kershaw.

Gonsalves yet to pitch in the postseason was up against a Dodgers team that owned the Mets this year. Estevez said "Look he earned his spot in the rotation for the postseason and with a good start and good play and a win we will have Jacob set for game two".

The Metropolitans got out to a early lead in the 3rd by scoring two. Los Angeles would tie it up in the 5th. After escaping further trouble Gonsalves got back into more in the 6th., after failing to record and out he was pulled.

Down 3-2 in the eighth inning Adam Frazier hit a opposite field blooper that scored the tying run. So with a renewed vigor and the skipper decided to ride his lyck by keeping Edwin Diaz in the game who cleaned up the mess from the prior inning. Well Diaz the Diaz of the Mets were hopung wouldn't show up did. Failing to get another out gave up two runs and then was yanked. Hoping to keep it clise Chasen Shreve who pitched excellent for NY this year added to the mess by giving up 2 as well, and sealing the Mets fate un Game 1 to a 7-3 loss.

New York looks to bounce back and tie up the series with deGrom up next up against Walker Buehler before heading back to Queens.

Cardinals place Devon Snow on 10 Day IL

Devon Snow's reign as the Cardinals everyday/primary catcher will have wait a bit longer, as the Cardinals have placed him on the 10 Day IL due to a pulled back muscle. The Cardinals considered waiting it out and seeing if he healed during the Opening Series and using him sparingly if at all, but later decided the best course of action was to place him on IL and recall Cristobol Lorenzo from Memphis.

Zach Jackson will be the Opening Day catcher for the Cardinals in Snow's absence.

Yankees Take Game 5 6-4, Advance To WS

Cleveland didn’t go quietly. Bieber would rebound a bit from his G1 start going 5.2 IP holding us to 3 runs. For us, Cole would put in a strong 6 inning 1 run outing. Tied 1-1 in the 6th, Judge would drive in Andujar with a double. Later that inning, Frazier would double in Judge giving us a 3-1 lead. In the 7th Cleveland would homer twice off a fatigued Chad Green to tie it at 3-3. That didn’t last long as Ryan Goins and Andujar went back to back with Solo HR’s, 5-3 Yankees.

The Indians would scratch one more across in the 8th off a tired Kahnle to make it 5-4. Higashioka would come up big with an RBI bloop single to make it 6-4. With Chapman pitching and 2 outs in the 9th, 2B Cesar Hernandez, hitting 364 in 36 AB’s this postseason, would come up trying to keep his team’s season alive. Hernandez would make solid contact....lining it right at Stanton in LF.
                        Yankees Win 6-4!

                        World Series Stage Set
                        Yankees 105-57 Vs.....98-64 Washington Nationals.

The Nats sent home the Dodgers in 6 games, winning the NLCS 4-2. Now the defending champs are just 4 wins away from becoming the first team to repeat as champions since the late 90’s Yankees. Fittingly, in order to accomplish that they’ll have to go through the Yankees.

This should be a very tough matchup as we take on the scariest playoff rotation in MLB, Scherzer, Strasburg, Corbin, and Austin Voth. No soft matchups there.

Aaron Hicks Added To WS Roster, Mike Ford Removed.
Luis Avilan Added To WS Roster, Jordan Montgomery Removed.

Higashioka To Start At C for WS G1
Higgy was very good in Games 4 and 5 of the ALCS. The best outings from our starters in the ALCS came in Games 4 and 5. Sanchez may play G3 vs Corbin.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

                              Mets Sweep Dodgers
                              July 17, 2024

The Mets just made a statement to the rest of baseball. After the All Star Break, the NL's New York team was staring down the barrel at 17 straight games, 14 of which are on the road, and the Dodgers to open up the second half. They didn't flinch and swept the series in LA, including come from behind wins in Game 1 and 2.

Walker Buehler turned in his worst start of the year in Game 1. He was unable to get out of the third inning, finishing with 6 ER on 6 H, including 4 HR. The bullpen would come up huge, though, and give up 0 ER over the next 6.1 innings. The Mets would fight back, taking the lead in the 5th inning. C Jonathan Lucroy would blow the game open in the top of the 9th with a 3-run blast, pushing the final to 12-6.

The Dodgers took a 3-1 lead into the 8th inning, but the Mets offense exploded for 4 runs. The rally started with a Michael Conforto double, his third of the day, and the Mets would proceed to bat around en route to the 4 runs.

Game 3 featured a lefty v lefty matchup in Amir Garrett and Clayton Kershaw Kershaw was spotless through 6 innings, including 8 K. The Mets' big lefty was also spotless through 6.2 IP, giving up just 2 hits and striking out 4. CF Eloy Jimenez provided the only offense of the game, crushing a RHP Thomas Rivera curveball for a 2-run shot.

The Mets (65-34) continue to make their way through the NL West standings and now head to San Diego to face the second place Padres (51-48).

                              Amir Garrett Heading to IL

The Mets lefty was rolling through the series finale against the Dodgers when he was hit in the knee by a line drive. It looks to be just a bone bruise, but it's pretty severe, and the Mets are opting to play it safe and get an extra arm to the bigs.

The Mets are opting to fill his roster spot with left-handed reliever Alfonso Delgaudio, who is having himself a nice year in Syracuse. The 27-year old has a 2.61 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 30 K in 38 IP this season. RHP Barney Shipman, who was up recently for his first cup of coffee in the majors, was the other option. Shipman's first stint with the Mets was short but ugly. He gave up 7 ER and 3 HR in 2.2 innings of work.

Delgaudio is also out of options, and will subsequently have to clear waivers when Garrett inevitably comes back. Rather than losing him for nothing in the offseason, this gives the Mets, and the rest of baseball, a chance to see if Delgaudio can be effective out of the pen down the stretch. The Mets could opt to either keep him on board to bolster a struggling bullpen, or flip Delgaudio for a lottery ticket.

In the meantime, Sean Machado is set to start in Garrett's place against the Giants next weekend. The Mets may also opt to DFA Delgaudio sooner if they decide to give lefty prospect Julio Fernandez a look. The 21-year old is next in line for the rotation and is having a solid year in Triple-A.

What's everyones stance on spring training games. Play, sim, a mixture of both? I do a mixture sometimes.
