    The Amazins

Mets Sweep Mariners, Winning Streak at Five
    June 8, 2024

The Mets took care of business in a midweek two-game series in Seattle, winning both games in the top of the last inning.

The Mets entered the 8th inning of Game 1 up 3-2, but a Max Kepler home run off RHP Louis Elias tied the game. Fortunately, the Mets would plate two in the top of the 9th and Kelvin Herrera would close the door for the save.

Game 2 featured more drama, with the Mets holding the lead for most of the afternoon. The Mariners would jump out to a 2-0 lead two batters into the game thanks to a Francisco Lindor home run of Noah Syndergaard, but they would quickly claim the lead for themselves when CF Alex Jackson, who was the DH in both games, hit a 3-run opposite field shot.

Syndergaard took a 4-3 lead into the 7th inning when he was replaced by Nathan Eovaldi. Eovaldi promptly gave up back to back home runs to give the Mariners a 5-4 lead. The Mets would not go down without a fight, as Alex Jackson plated a run with an RBI single in the 8th inning. It would be the Mets who struck next. In the top of the 10th, 2023 ROY Eloy Jimenez hit his 8th home run of the year down the left field line and sneaking it inside the foul pole.

The Mets are now 11-3 in their last 14 games, and have looked every bit of a contender outside of their sweep at the hands of the Marlins. Unfortunately, the pesky Marlins are 9-1 in their last 10 and only trail the Mets by 3.5 games in the division.

The Mets (43-25) will get another day off tomorrow before heading to Colorado and taking on the first place Rockies (39-28).

      Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

Tied 1-1, The NLCS Swings to San Diego

For Game 3 featured Brailyn Marquez and Joey Lucchesi; If the projected starters hold, the Cubs will face 3 lefties and the Cubs are likely to make the move to not start Schwarber and Rizzo. Rizzo has struggled mightily this year against lefties and Schwarber hasn’t fared much better. In Game 3 the Cubs shifted Contreras to left field and Amaya will hit 8th and catch. Kris Bryant shifted to right field while Rafeal Guerra manned the hot corner and Justin Turner at 1st, while Nico Hoerner will get the start at 2nd. The Chicago lineup struggled in game 2 to string together hits so the Cubs are hopeful that they will find more production with a lineup batting from the right side and will have big bats ready to pinch hit with Happ, Schwarber and Rizzo being available. The cubs struck first as Contreras got the free pass on a 2 out walk. After 2 quick strikes Javier Baez was able to get the Cubs the lead with a double to center field.
      <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aA9kj2mdf-E" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Cubs struck again and made the score 2-0 as Bryant was able to hit against a shift as he drove a ball to the right field foul line and was aided by the short porch for a solo home run.
      <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KxuJ76J9CII" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Cubs carried a 3-0 lead into the 6th and Marquez had been pitching great but the wheels fell off as he allowed Brantley to get on and Tatis crushed a ball to make it 3-2
      <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/w8c7-R6wjls" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Brailyn settled down but his start would come to an end in the 7th after walking Pham and allowing a double to Brantley. Rowan Wick was able to come in and get out Tatis but the Friars would take a lead on a 3 run home run by Machado. The Cubs could not put together a rally and fell in game 3 5 to 3.

In Game 4 AJ Puk faced Mackenzie Gore in the pivotal game 3, . Puk was able to cruise through the first but found himself in a load of trouble in the 2nd as he had no outs and the bases loaded. Puk was able to take Naylor to a full count and got the pop up that was too shallow for the runner to advance. Puk induced the ground out for a double play that got the Cubs batting without scoring a run. The Cubs struck first as Kris Bryant took a pitch just over the left field wall to go up 1-0
      <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4SzOvC41K0A" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The lead was short lived as Puk again loaded the bases in the 5th but didn’t get out unscathed but limited the damage to 1 run. Both teams bullpens kept their teams in it and tensions were high as we headed to the 9th. The Cubs had the top of the order up needing a spark. After Bryant popped up to the 1st baseman for the first out Justin Turner was able to hit a ball down the line for a double. Up next was Willson Contreras with 1 away. Willson had been 0 for the series up to that point; he had drawn several walks but his contact has been right at people. Contreras was able to jump on a 1-0 slider over the plate that was hit high; Pham went back to the wall as the ball continued to carry but was not able to bring it back in as the Cubs took the 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the 9th the Emmanuel Clase came in to face the 1-2-3 hitters of San Diego. The closer was able to make short work of Pham and Brantley as he struck out both on 7 pitchers. That brought up Tatis as Friars last chance. Clase stayed away from the young slugger as he served him cutters and sliders low and away but was able to get swings on all three of pitches to get the save. With the win the Cubs will play one more in San Diego with the series tied 2-2.

In Game 5 Yu Darvish faced Adrian Morejon. Yu Darvish has pitched 5 innings in relief in the postseason and Chicago needed a strong outing from him to avoid going down 3-2. Rizzo and Schwarber remained on the bench to start the game but Happ has taken over for Nico at 2nd as Hoerner continues to struggle, going 0 for 16 so far in October. AFter both teams failed to score in the first 3 innings the Cubs got to Morejon as Baez came up big again as he squared up a pitch that bounced to the outfield wall for a double with 2 outs. After working the count, Rafeal Guerra was able to get a fly ball to center that Brantley drove for but came up short from missing the catch allowing Baez to score. Guerra made a gutsy call to try for second and just made it in; unfortunately the cubs couldn’t add anymore as Reyes struck out in the next at bat.
      <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dZx91C4vX7c" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In the 5th Darvish’s shut out came to an end as Machado crushed a ball to the upper decks in left field. The Padres were able to add two more in the 6th as Pham and Brantely doubled back to back. On the second double Baez had a chance at the ball but came up short on the driving play and came up lame. After spending time with the trainer Baez exited the game with a leg injury. The Cubs were deflated as much of the lineup has struggled and now they would be without their hot bat as Baez had gotten hits in 5 of his last 6 at bats. Darvish was taken out at the same time and Kyle Ryan gave up a double to Naylor to make it 3-1. Our score remained that way until the 9th as the Cubs were looking down the barrel of having to return to Chicago to play a elimination game. Emilio Pagan came in to get the save but trouble started as he missed played a routine grounder in front of the mound that allowed Rafeal Guerra to make it to 2nd base on the error. This would be the spark that the Cubs need as pinch ran for Guerra with Velaquez and had Ian Happ up. Happ jumped on a pitch left in the zone to tie the game up with a 2 run shot.
      <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/c21GqnIjwJ4" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

After Reyes walked Pagan was relieved & the Cubs, smelling blood in the water, emptied their bench as Rizzo came in to hit for Miguel Amaya. The veteran hit a single and Brennan Davis came in to pinch run. Schwarber pinch hit for the pitchers spot but proceeded to strike out. Bryant was able to work back from a 0-2 count to make it 2-2. A pass ball for a full count allowed the runners to move to 3rd and 2nd and the Padres elected to grant the intentional walk. The Cubs called Turner back to the dugout and had Oscar Colas bat with the bases loaded and 1 out. Colas was able to take the fastball to the warning track that allowed Reyes to score, 4-3 Contreras was able to draw the walk to again load the bases and Hoerner got a timely single to score another 2 to make it 6-3. Clase came in again after the Cubs heroics and faced 3 batters getting 2 K’s and a ground out. The Cubs will head back to Wrigley with a chance to win the Pennant in 6 games but will be without Javier Baez as he had a pulled leg muscle and will be out for at least a few days.

In the AL, the Red Sox were able to get back in the series after looking awful in the first 2 games. In game 3 in LA Boston took the lead on a 3 run bomb by Devers and added 2 more 9th winning 8-4. In Game 4 Boston lead all the way but only was able to get 4 ⅓ innings out of Fernando Romero but the Bullpen went the rest of the way not allowing a run in the 3-2 win.

McKay and Moncada power Cardinals to Game 3 win

Brendan McKay and Yoan Moncada both went 3 for 4 on the day and powered the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory in Game 3 of the NLDS over the host Marlins. The Cardinals lead the NLDS 2-1.

McKay's 3 hits were all singles, but he did drive home the game tying run in the 6th. Moncada's 3 hits included a double and a 2 run go ahead/game winning homerun in the 8th.

The Marlins jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Ronald Acuna's solo homerun in the 1st inning off of Junior Fernandez. Fernandez would settle down, scatter some hits, but not take anymore damage. Fernandez went just 4 2/3 innings being lifted in the 5th for Adam Cimber who got the Cardinals out of a 2 out, bases loaded jam. Corey Littrell would pitch a perfect 6th, Zack Burdi a perfect 7th (earned the win), Jordan Hicks a perfect 8th, and Roberto Osuna would get some bad luck that led to no outs and bases loaded, but would get Greg Bird to ground into a 5-2-3 double play and then strike out Nick Castellanos on 3 pitches to close out the game.

The two teams are back at it Wednesday night. Neither team has announced a Game 4 starter at this time.

Yankees Win 3 of 4 in Baltimore, Get Swept By Red Sox In 3, Now at 97-49 record.

We continue to struggle now being swept at Yankee Stadium by a scorching hot 82-65 Red Sox team. The Yankee offense was lifeless all series only scoring 1 run a game. Take out those 4 easy games against the Orioles, and this team is 2-7 in our last 3 series.

The Blue Jays have chipped our division lead down to 6, and we still have 6 games left against them.

The Yankees will make a move to try and find some sort of spark to jumpstart the team again, as OF Zach Granite has been optioned to AAA and OF Mike Tauchman has been recalled. Granite was recalled when rosters expanded to serve as a late game PR and defensive sub option. We’ll look to Tauchman to try and make something happen at the plate.

          Next up:
The 92-56 Blue Jays come to NY for a big 3 game series, looking to take advantage of a slumping Yankees team and further cut into that 6 game gap.

Alright Padres fans, I am starting a franchise with your team and really know absolutely nothing about the organization. I love a few of the players like Tatis, Machado, and Hosmer. And I know y'all just got Clevinger for the rotation which is awesome. How would you set your lineup? I have Tatis leading off and Machado batting third. I've got Hosmer in the cleanup spot but I'm pretty clueless as to where to go from there. The 2 hole is where I'm stuck at. Not sure if I want to put Pham there or maybe a lefty like Cronenworth. As for the rotation, I have Clevinger and Paddock as my 1-2. Not sure after that. Any help from Padres fans would be fantastic. [emoji4]

              Marlins bats force Game 5

The Marlins hit 4 homeruns in Game 4 to earn a 6-5 win over the Cardinals in Miami to force a Game 5 in the NLDS.

The Cardinals jumped out in the 2nd inning when Andrew Knizner would double home 2 runs to put the Cardinals up early 2-0.

Dakota Hudson got the start for the Cardinals and was rolling along until the 3rd inning when Mallex Smith put the Marlins on the board with a solo homerun to make it a 2-1 game. But the Cardinals would get that run back in the 4th when J.J. Bleday hit his first career postseason homerun to make it a 3-1 game. But the Marlins would come right back an tie it in the bottom of the inning when Miguel Andujar and Harold Ramirez hit back to back homeruns off of Hudson to knock him out of the game.

The Cardinals would turn to Josh Rogers in the 5th and he would give up a 3 run homerun to Rafael Devers to make it 6-3 Marlins heading into the 2nd half of the game.

The Cardinals would get 2 back in the 8th when J.J. Bleday delivered a two run double to cut the lead to one run, but the Cardinals would do nothing after that. Austin Davis came in for the Marlins in the 9th and struck out the side to clinch Game 4 and force a deciding Game 5 in St.Louis on Thursday.

Kyle Funkhouser will get the start for the Cardinals while the Marlins will turn to Eduard Cabrera.

Cardinals win Game 5 advance to NLCS

The Cardinals are heading to the NLCS to face the Giants!

The Cardinals jumped out early to a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a Yoan Moncada RBI double, driving home Samuel Franco who doubled to record his first hit of the postseason. Kyle Funkhouser was rolling along, but the wheels came off in the 5th, when he would give up 2 runs including a RBI single to opposing pitcher Edward Cabrera, that made it 2-1 with 1 out in the inning. Mallex Smith would tie the game on a sac fly before Funkhouser got Jose Devers to pop out to end the threat.

The Cardinals wouldn't go away as in the 7th, Moncada delivered his 2nd double of the game and J.J. Bleday drove him home with a RBI double of his own to tie the game. After Eddie Ortiz struck out for the 2nd out of the inning, Nolan Gorman would deliver his 2nd hit of the game driving home C.J. McElroy who was pinch running for Bleday to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.

Jordan Hicks would get through the 8th allowing a single, but nothing more and then Roberto Osuna would save the game in the 9th with a one, two, three inning to clinch the game and the series and send the Cardinals to the NLCS.

The Cardinals will head to San Francisco to face the Giants for Games 1 & 2 this weekend.

Flaherty dazzles, Cards win Game 1

Jack Flaherty was simply magnificent in Game 1 of the NLCS as he pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits as he gets the win. Flaherty only recorded 2 strikeouts, but he had the Giants bats off balance his entire night.

Roberto Osuna recorded his 3rd save of the postseason and is now a perfect 38 for 38 in save opportunities between the regular season and postseason. There's a reason why Osuna was the National League Reliever of the Year award.

The Cardinals only managed 3 hits themselves on the night, but a RBI triple by Eddie Ortiz and then a sac fly to bring him home by Nolan Gorman in the 5th, were the only runs the Cardinals would need. Once again, the youngsters carry the Cardinals offense.

Game 2 will be Sunday night with the Cardinals putting Junior Fernandez (0-0 1.93 ERA) on the mound against Jose Berrios (0-0 9.00 ERA) of the Giants.

Giants throttle Cards, tie series at 1 game apiece

The Giants absolutely dominated Game 2 of the NLCS, defeating the Cardinals 12-0 inside Oracle Park Sunday night.

Junior Fernandez was touched up for 6 runs in 3 innings of work and those that followed weren't any better as Josh Rogers and Adam Hasely would be touched up as well giving up 6 combined runs on 3 homeruns. The only bright spot out of the bullpen was Adam Cimber, who allowed Francisco Lindor to double for his 4th hit of the game, and then proceeded to strike out the side in the 8th.

Jose Berrios shut down the Cardinals bats to the tune of a complete game shutout where he allowed 3 hits, one walk and struck out 7. He also accounted for 2 hits at the plate with 2 RBI's.

After a travel day on Monday, the two teams will meet in St.Louis for Game 3 of the NLCS with the Cardinals turning to veteran Michael Wacha while the Giants will hand the ball to Robert Scott.

Cardinals walkoff Giants in 10th, take Game 3 of NLCS

The Cardinals win Game 3 in dramatic fashion to take a 2-1 series lead over the Giants. Samuel Franco would deliver his 2nd homerun of the game on a hanging slider in the bottom of the 10th to walkoff the Giants in Game 3 of the NLCS.

Franco homered earlier in the game in the 4th to cut a 2-0 deficit to 2-1. The Cardinals feel behind after the Giants got one in the first inning thanks in part to an error by Nolan Gorman on a routine double play ball that could've gotten them out of the jam, but instead the throw sailed into right field allowing Steven Duggar to score. Thankfully, Michael Wacha would strike out the side to erase any further damage. The Giants would get another run in the 3rd on a Chance Sisco RBI sac fly.

The Cardinals would get the one back in the 4th on the Samuel Franco homerun, and would tie the game in the 5th when pinch hitter Paul DeJong drove in Nolan Gorman on a RBI single. The game would stay tied until the 8th when NL MVP and homerun champion, Chance Sisco would hit a solo shot off of Zack Burdi to give the Giants a 3-2 lead.

But the Cardinals would not let that be the end, as they would tie the game in the 9th when Yoan Moncada reached first on a walk and was moved to 3rd when J.J. Bleday doubled off the right field wall. Tommy Edman would pinch run for Bleday as the Cards had 2 on a no outs. Eddie Ortiz would hit a sac fly to drive in Moncada, but Edman stayed at 2nd. Nolan Gorman would pop out and Devon Snow would strike out to leave the winning run on 2nd.

Roberto Osuna would be tasked in the 10th with facing the top of the lineup, but he struck out Duggar, got Lindor to pop out to Franco, and then Sisco to fly out to left.

In the bottom of the 10th, C.J. McElroy would pop out, Harrison Bader would line out to Kris Bryant, and then Samuel Franco would do this....

The Train Rolls On, Mets Sweep Rockies
                        June 12, 2024

The Mets took care of business in Colorado, exploding for 24 runs over the three games, including 8 HR. Their win streak now sits at 8 games, and after a day off they'll head to Miami to take on the Marlins.

Game 2 was one of the best games of the season for the Mets and it got started with a Rafael Devers grand slam in the first inning. The Mets would finish with 11 runs on 19 hits, including 4 HR and 7 2B. SP Dave Monahan was also magnificent, giving up 3 H over 8 innings and only surrendering two runs.

The Mets haven't lost a game since the last time they played Miami, and this series will be another big one. The Marlins trail the Mets by 5.5 games, and are hoping to keep that number small as the Mets are starting to find a groove.

Funkhouser and Cardinals win pitcher's duel in Game 4

If you're a fan of offense, then this wasn't the game for you. If you're a fan of pitching, defense, and every at-bat meaningful because the is tight, then you got your money's worth in Game 4.

The Cardinals topped the Giants 2-1 to take a 3 games to 1 lead in the NLCS and move to a win away from punching their ticket to the World Series.

Kyle Funkhouser did not disappoint as he went 6 strong innings allowing just 4 hits, 1 run, and striking out 5. Jakob Junis went 7 innings allowing just 3 hits, 2 runs and striking out 10. The problem for Junis was that 2 of the 3 hits he allowed were solo homeruns. Samuel Franco got to him in the first and then Nolan Gorman in the 2nd inning, after that, Junis went 5 additional innings allowing only one other hit and striking out 8 including 5 in a row.

The Cardinals turned to Jonny Venters to pitch the 7th which he came through, Adam Cimber pitched the 8th and after a lead off single by Miguel Gomez, got pinch hitter Canario to strike out and then Duggar to hit into an inning ending double play. Jordan Hicks got the call to close the game as Osuna threw 38 pitches in Game 3 the night before. Hicks struck out the side to clinch Game 4 and move the Cardinals a win away from the World Series.

Game 5 will pit Jack Flaherty on the mound for the Cardinals. The Giants have no yet named a Game 5 starter.

Giants force series back to San Francisco and a Game 6

The Giants scored 2 runs in the Top of the 6th to take a 3-2 lead that would end up being the final score, as they have forced a Game 6 and the series to return to the Bay Area.

The Giants struck first in the opening inning, manufacturing a run after back to back hits by Duggar and Lindor. Chance Sisco hit into a double play, but got the run across the plate. The Cardinals answered in the bottom half doing essentially the same thing. Bader walked and McKay doubled to right putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Moncada would ground out to drive in a run to tie the game.

The Cardinals would take the lead in the 5th when Devon Snow would hit a sac fly to right field to bring home Eddie Ortiz who doubled and then moved to 3rd when Nolan Gorman singled to right. But that lead would be short lived as Jack Flaherty returned to the mound in the 6th and was greeted with back to back doubles by Chance Sisco and Marco Luciano to tie the game at 2. Josh Rogers would be called upon and again, he was unable to hold things down as he allowed Triston Casas to single to left to drive in Luciano and put the Giants up for good, 3-2.

The Cardinals would never threaten again as they were held hittless in the last 4 innings and will now travel to San Francisco for a Game 6.

The Cardinals will start Junior Fernandez who was roughed up in Game 2 while the Giants will turn to their ace Amir Garrett.

                              Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

After Day off Cubs Return to Wrigley With a Chance to Punch Ticket to 3rd straight World Series.

Game 6 of the NLCS shifted back to Wrigley as the Cubs will have Oscar Colas on the mound as the Padres would have Chris Paddack again in a rematch of game 1. Both pitchers have excelled in the post season as Paddack has 16 K’s in 14 innings of work and a 1.93 ERA; not to be out down Colas has 13 K’s in 12 innings and has only given up 6 hits with a 0.75 ERA. in the 3rd inning the Padres were able to get on the board as he hit he a 2 run home run to get the Friars the early lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd the Cubs were able to get a spark from the bottom half of their lineup as Reyes hit a single and Nico was able to walk his way on base as he took the place of the injured Javy at short. Kris Bryant was able to get the Cubs on the board as he stroked a ball to left for a 3 run home run.

The Cubs were not done as Contreras got on base to set up Happ with 2 outs and he crushed a ball to make it 5-2 Cubs.

Moving on to the 4th inning,Chicago's 8 and 9 hitters again did damage as Reyes got on and stole 2nd that set up Nico lofting a ball in front of the right fielder to push the lead to 6-2.

In the top of the 5th Pham was able to wake up the San Diego bats as he got on with a double, Colas was able to get Brantley to pop up but Tatis Jr came through with a single to score the runner. Machado singled to put runners at the corners but Colas was able to limit the damage to 1 after getting the strike out with Profar up to bat and Naylor pooped up to end the inning. Colas again ran into trouble as Pham got on base, Colas would finish his day by getting Brantley to pop out again as Carl Edwards Jr came in to face Tatis. Edwards has been brilliant this postseason as he had pitched 8 innings of relief work without allowing a run. Tatis got out of the 7th throwing just 2 pitches as he got the double play to end it. In the 8th Edwards got a 1-2-3 inning to get the Cubs up to bat and Contreras was able to draw yet another walk. Schwarber failed to move the runner over. With 2 outs Brennan Davis was up for the first time after coming in for a defensive replacement for Happ. The youngster was able to work a 1-2 count to get a single just past Tatis at short to score Contreras.

While the save was off the table, Clase came in in the 9th looking to earn the final 3 outs to send the Cubs to their 3rd straight World Series. Class was able to get Donovan Casey to pop out. Next up Campusano could not hold back as he struck out. Down the the final out, Eric Hosmer was the last chance for San Diego, Hosmer found himself down 0-2 quickly after fighting off a pitch he was able to get weak contact on a cutter from Clase, the slow roller was just out of reach from Bryant but Nico was able to get to it and sling it to Rizzo for the final out.
                              <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_bzBBKtGE4Y" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Cubs get past San Diego 7-3 to win the Series 4 games to 2. Colas gave up 9 hits in his 6 & ⅓ innings but struck out 6 and kept the damage to 3 runs. Paddack was only able to go 4 innings and allowed 7 hits with 3 4 strikeouts while was on the hook for 6 of the runs.

The Cubs would have to wait to see who they would face as the ALCS would go the distance. Boston was able to get back into the series after winning games 3 and 4. The Angels were able to win a squeaker in game 5 2-1 as Jose Urena and Jose Berrios pitched a game for the ages. Both starters took shutouts into the 8th inning with Berrios going 8 innings on 6 hits and 7 K’s for Boston and Urena went 8 innings while allowing 1 hit and 2 walks and fanning 9 batters. The game would go into extras with the score 0-0. In the top of the 10th Conforto was able to put the Bo Soxs on top with a solo home run but Mike Trout would not let his team lose as he hit a solo of his own. In the bottom of the 11th Jo Addelll was able to drive in Jesus Aguilar for the walk off season.

In game 6 Chris Sale was able to outduel Shane Bieber in a 3-1 win. In Game 7 Ohtani was able to get the better of Marcus Walden as the two way phenom struck out 10 in 5 innings of work as the Angels punched their ticket to the fall classic.

Corey Dickerson was able to win the AL postseason MVP as he hit .406 and belted 3 home runs. On the NL side Javy Baez took top honor as he hit .353 and had key hits for the Cubs.

                                Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

The Angels and Cubs Square off for Game One of 2023 World Series

                                Both Teams were set on Thursday for Game 1 at Wrigley Field. The Angels were able to win the AL West with the 3rd best record in the AL as they checked in at 98-64. Mike Trout still leads the team but has struggled with injuries 2 of the last 3 seasons. In ‘21 he had a MVP type season cut short with a knee injury that cost him 80 games; in ‘23 Trout again went down early in the season and missed over a month of ball but rebounded as he hit .329 and had 24 home runs in 102 games. Anthony Rendon has been solid for Los Angeles and hit .293 and knocked 41 home runs. Ohtani struggled on the mound but had a great season in the lineup as he hit .346 and had 23 home runs in 266 plate appearances. The Angels got the most out of their key deadline pick up as Shane Bieber was acquired from the Indians and posted a 18-6 record with a 3.22 ERA; he added a 1-2 punch as Trevor Baur had a career year going 17 and 8 with a 2.63 ERA;

Trevor Bauer would take the ball in game 1 for LA as Colas would again take the mound for the Cubs. Bauer has struggled a bit in the postseason; after posting a 17-8 with a 2.63 ERA.line in the regular season, Bauer has a ERA over 5 in 10 innings of work. The Cubs switched up their line up and had Bryant in right field as Rafeal Guerra got the start at 3rd and Ian Happ would man 2nd for the Cubs. Chicago has run into spells where hits were hard to come by and they hoped to get off to a fast start in game 1. Lineup: 1-Bryant RF/2-Rizzo 1b/3-Contreras C/4-Schwarber/ 5-Baez SS/6-/Happ 2b/7-Guerra 3b/8-Colas P/9-Reyes CF. The Cubs got to work quickly as Bryant led off with a double and Rizzo did the same to get the first run across in the 1st.

In the second inning, Happ was able to crush the ball to right to make it 2-0.

The score remained that way until the 4th when Rendon sent a ball into the bleachers. The score would have been 3-2 but Mike Trout was caught stealing the play before to keep the bath paths empty.
                                <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SVkAXgzjpE0" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
In the 5th Happ got on with a single and Oscar Colas walked to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Victory Reyes tattooed a ball for a triple to make it 4-1. Bauer would get out of the inning leaving Reyes at 3rd.

In the bottom of the 6th would spell trouble for Colas as he allowed a solo shot to Jo Addell. With the top of the order up, The Cubs’ lefty was able to get Jahmi Jones and Simmons out and intentionally walked Trout. Colas day was done as the manager brought in the fresh arm of Andre Chacin in to face Rendon. The move didn’t go as planned as Chacin would allow the 2nd home run for Rendon as the score was cut to 5-4. In the 7th Yovanny Cruz’s inning started off rough as he hit Jesus Augilar but avoided the big inning as he struck out the 2nd 2 and got a ground out to end the inning. The Cubs went back to work in the 7th as Rizzo was able to get on first after hitting a line drive that bounced off Middleton’s leg to allow him to reach. 2 batters later Kyle Schwarber made the early case for World Series MVP by hitting his second home run of game 1.
                                <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ckuyqs2-_XQ" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Cubs turned to Carl Edwards Jr again and he came through with the 1-2-3 inning in the 8th. The Emmanuel Clase would face hitters 4-5-6 but started the 9th out by hitting Rendon on 1st. Clase got Dickerson to line out for a fielder's choice and then got the strike out of Aguilar and a pop up to right field as the Cubs took game 1, 7-4.
