I just signed my 1B to a 5 year extension @ 19.5 million a year, absorbing 1 arbitration year for some savings in the other 4. If his trends hold, that will be a huge, team friendly contract for my team. If he busts though...

yeah, I went all in on Chris Johnson, and while I faired slightly better with CJ than his IRL counterpart, I quit handing out anything longer than 4 years. I won't even give Freeman longer than 4 years. since I find it near impossible to part ways with players that come my way, I have to force them to do the saying goodbye when they choose to sign elsewhere. I think Kimbrel is the only major player I've dumped before IRL Atlanta

Yeah it only takes getting burned one time to avoid it like the plague. If my 1B doesn't pan out like I expect him too, that's 6 years (remember it's an extension, so there is this year as well) of my literal life he's going to be my 1B man. I sometimes get 1 1/2 done in a year, so maybe 5. I'm going to be in my 40s when his contract is up!

And then there are guys asking for even longer contracts. I stay focused on home grown talent and team control. My 1B was an exception. He's been a core part of my offence for 2 years now, and still had plenty of upside. I've made my big commitments. Now it's all about keeping my farm system healthy so I can continually replace pieces around that core while staying competitive and not anchoring myself with more big commitments.

I am having this internal debate over in-season extensions for these very same reasons. I went back and forth over a few guys in spring training and passed on Mariano Duncan who has been a fabulous utility man for me and likely could take over for the 38 year old Joe Morgan at 2B so I may very well extend him at the AS break. I did extend C Don Slaught for 4 years at just over $5M per and he has been great through 50 games posting a WAR of 1.4. I've got declining lefty Paul Assenmacher who is a key set-up guy I'd like to have around after this season but I'm just not sure on pulling the trigger. I'd like to save some budget room to get my stars locked up when their time comes.

I almost always sign players to either 1- year extensions or 2-year deals with a club option. Additionally, I will spend a little extra to get them to sign under depth for the morale boost that it brings. The other bad thing about the longer deals (other than the risk of them becoming a bad value) is that a player’s expectation about their role can’t be influenced every season like it can when keeping them on short extensions. The boost you get when you exceed their expectations by making them either an everyday player or superstar is considerable and almost always helps you maintain an excellent overall morale rating with the player.

I will say this, I'm surprised to hear cb is going for back-to-back championships. I figured he'd retire this franchise now and start up a current roster one. that's the great thing about these carry-overs, you can finally become fully invested playing multiple multiple seasons over different iterations of the Show
Yeah I have no intentions of re-starting this franchise as I've become so heavily invested. Watching guys I drafted or young players on my team develop and become star or contributors at the major league level is really cool to follow.

My starters for the 2027 season will likely be nothing but guys I've drafted and developed or young guys we traded for in bad years to rebuild this organization to be able to be competitive year after year without going into complete rebuilding mode.

There may come a time where I end this and start over, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Cards make first big decision/move of offseason, trade Yoan Moncada to Yankees

The Cardinals have made their first big decision this offseason and that prompted a big move of this young offseason as the Cardinals have traded 2B Yoan Moncada to the Yankees for pitching prospects Jack Leiter and Luis Medina.

              Cardinals Get:

SP - Jack Leiter (Top 10 prospect in baseball)
RP - Luis Medina (pitched at AAA level last year)

              Yankees Get:

              2B - Yoan Moncada

The Yankees were desperately looking for a second baseman this offseason as that position was revolving door last year. The Cardinals were looking for pitching prospects to rebuild the depth within the organization, so this may have been a perfect match.

The Cardinals get Jack Leiter who is 21 years old and is on the cusp of being major league ready. He won an astonishing 20 games at the AAA level last year for the Yankees with an ERA of 2.34. He is the #9 ranked prospect in all of baseball and was the focal point of any trade the Cards were willing to make with the Yanks for Moncada.

Luis Medina is a 22 year old RHP who also pitched at the AAA level last year to the tune of a 3.23 ERA and he recorded 6 saves. He has an explosive fastball and a slider and splitter that work well with that fastball. He will definitely serve as a piece of the rebuild of the Cardinals pitching staff.

The Yankees get Moncada who is an all-star caliber player, but is frustrated by his contract, so it will be interesting to see how that works in the Bronx and the media there. For the Cardinals, it was too much of a distraction to deal with and they apparently have other plans for the second base position this offseason. They have internal options in Devin Mann, Tommy Edman, or they could move DeJong to starting shortstop and slide Samuel Franco to second. Or they could check out the market and fulfill the position there, which is the most likely of options.

Still, the Cardinals are sticking to their plan this offseason of building quality depth within the pitching staff and Leiter and Medina will go a long way to serving that purpose.

Do you guys typically play every game? Or do most of you follow the play 1, sim 5 model? I've been playing every pitch of my Pirates franchise, but they're so agonizingly terrible in year 1 that it gets depressing losing 2 out of every 3. Part of me is tempted to start simming to speed things up, while the other part of me wants to grind through this to make the payoff even sweeter.

I'm trying to keep the rebuild as realistic as possible, so big trades are basically limited to July and the Winter Meetings, I'm not doing unrealistic free agent signings, etc.

Yankees sign Hunter Greene to 9 year deal

The Yankees have made the biggest free agent signing thus far to the offseason as they just inked the 27 year old to a 9 year deal worth $223MM.

Greene had spent his entire career with the Indians and has been a 2 time all-star in 6 seasons as the big league level.

Hunter Greene is the 2nd addition to the Yankees club this offseason as they traded for 2B Yoan Moncada from the Cardinals a few days ago.

The Yankees are looking to end a franchise on going record of 11 straight seasons of missing the postseason.

                      The Amazins

Mets Take 3 of 4 From Reds
                      June 23, 2024

The Mets continue their hot play in June as they won the series and pushed their record for the month to an impressive 14-6.

The lone blemish this series was in Game 3, when Nathan Eovaldi came into a tied ballgame in the 8th inning and was unable to retire a batter. The Reds would push their lead to 6-2 in the inning, winning the game 6-3. A strong performance from SP Dakota Chalmers in the finale gave the Mets a 4-2 win and the series.

3B Walter Sato homered in his first game back with the major league club after filling the roster spot opened by the D.J. Peterson trade.

The Mets (52-29) close out their 10 game homestand with a weekend series against the Nationals (38-43).

                            Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

                            2023-24 OffSeason

Soon after the World Series the Cubs announced the retirement of 3 players. Yu Darvish decided to not enter free agency and went out on top after a great performance in game 4 of the World Series. 39 year old Justin Turner played a key roll on the bench for the Cubs the last 2 years and decided to call it a career. The Cubs minor league pitcher Caleb Moeller also retired at age 22. Moeller had been in his second year but bounced between single and Double A and could not stay healthy after spending much time on the IL he choose not to report back.

Around Baseball Max Scherzer called it career and was a first ballot hall of famer. The right hander spent his entire career with the Nats and won 219 games and struck out nearly 3600 batters. Joey Votto, Andrew Miller and Craig Kimbrell also ceded to father time, Kimbrel finished with 480 saves.

The Cubs had most of their roster locked up and had one less decision to make with Darvish’s retirement. Kyle Ryan declined his player option and worked out a deal with the cubs to stay on for 2 more years with a pay bump. Kris Bryant also agreed to his player option to play out the final year of his deal that will pay him 35.4 million in 2024. The only other player not signed was Ian Happ. Happ had a breakout year and capped his season with the WS MVP but the Cubs were reluctant to pay him what he thought he was worth. The Cubs in the end wanted a team friendly deal slightly more than a qualifying offer. Happ decided to not sign in the exclusive time range and would field other offers.

The Cardinals on the other hand were able to retain their star as Jack Flaherty signed a 217m 7 year; the Nats did the same as Juan Soto will remain with the club for the next 7 years on a deal paying him well over 230 million as they avoided arbitration. There were several top flight players hitting the market and the Rangers struck first as Ohtani signed on the first day of free agency, leaving LA for the lone star stage as he inked a 7 year deal worth 230 million with the Rangers. The Cubs at the end would lose Happ as he would travel north to play for the twins for 109 million/6 year deal. Happ figures to be the focal point of their lineup and will split between the field and DH; reports out of Chicago are the Cubs would not budge much from their initial offer of 5 years at 19 million with turned Happ to look to take a deal that would pay him less per year. The Cubs were thought to be quiet in free agency but 10 days in they surprised baseball as they announced the signing of multi Cy Young winner Jacob DeGrom. The righty has continued to dominate baseball as he captured another CY in 2021 and ‘22 but now 35 years old the Mets were unwilling to sign more than a one year deal. The Cubs put a feeler out and made a deal by offering a 2 year deal including a player option. Degrom will make 28 million in 2024 and will likely headline the Cubs rotation. The only other player to sign with the North Side was JD Martinez on a one year deal. Martinez will likely be a professional batter as he is a liability in the field at the age of 37; as the calendar flipped in January JD had no offers and potentially looked to walk away from baseball but will take one more crack at things with the Cubbies.

                            Other signings:
                            Brewers Hader - 6y62m
                            Rangers Ohtani - 7y217
                            Dodgers - Adalberto mondesi 6y140m
Reds - Bellinger 7y220m, Jose Urias 6y 120m, Joey Lucceshi 2 year deal
Royal Grienke goes back to where he started to likely finish his career.
                            Rays - Luis Castillo
                            Cardinals -Blake Snell
Padres - Whit Merrifield 1 deal
Red Sox - Nick Castellanos, Grandal
